Liberty (4-2) continues its 10-match road swing this weekend, traveling to Boone, N.C., for the Appalachian State Invitational. While in Boone, the Lady Flames will face Charlotte (2-4) on Friday at 4 p.m., before meeting Appalachian State (4-3) and Missouri (6-0) on Saturday. The Lady Flames are 5-3 all-time against Charlotte and 2-4 versus Appalachian State. While meeting Missouri for the first time, Liberty is 2-9 all-time against SEC teams, defeating Ole Miss, 3-1, on Sept. 12, 1998 and downing Alabama, 3-2, Sept. 9, How to Follow the Lady Flames Live stats will be available for all of this weekend s matches at the Appalachian State Invitational through StatBroadcast. Liberty posted a 1-2 record at the NAU Classic, wrapping up with a 3-1 win over Houston Baptist on Saturday during which the Lady Flames outhit the Huskies, while posting a season-high 10 blocks. 2. Redshirt senior Jade Vorster was named to the Lumberjack Classic All-Tournament team, her second all-tournament team honor this season. 3. Liberty leads the Big South entering the week, with 2.35 blocks per set, while Jade Vorster (1.26 bps) is the conference leader in blocks so far. Anna Willey (0.85, 8th) and Sirena Vorster (0.84, 9th) are also in the top Junior Susan Babcock has posted two four-ace matches this season, against Hampton and Houston Baptist. The last Lady Flame to record two matches with four or more aces in the same season was Becca Haraf in For the first time this season, three Lady Flames entered double-figures in kills on Saturday against Houston Baptist, in Jade Vorster (15), Gabrielle Vess (14) and Sirena Vorster (10). 6. The Lady Flames outhit Houston Baptist, in a 3-1 win on Saturday. Jade Vorster, who led Liberty with 15 kills (.520) and six blocks against HBU, was named to the Lumberjack Classic All-Tournament team. Three s a Crowd On Saturday against Houston Baptist, Liberty placed three players in double figures in kills for the first time this season, in Jade Vorster (15), Gabrielle Vess (14) and Sirena Vorster (10). It also marked the second time in their Liberty careers that the Vorster sisters reached double-digits in kills in the same match (Sept. 20, 2014 vs. Wright State). Own the Net At the start of the week, Liberty led the Big South with 2.35 blocks per set so far this season, bolstered by a season-high 10 blocks on Saturday versus Houston Baptist. Three-time all-conference middle blocker Jade Vorster averages 1.26 blocks per set to lead the Big South, while Anna Willey (0.85, 8th) and Sirena Vorster (0.84, 9th) also rank in the top 10. Give and Take Away Liberty ranks second in the Big South in both hitting percentage (.233) and opponents hitting percentage (.159). Sirena Vorster ranks second in the conference at.400, followed by sister, Jade Vorster (.370). On Saturday against Houston Baptist, the Vorsters combined to hit (.575). Season Opening Liberty swept UNCG, 3-0, on Aug. 28, winning its season opener for the second year in a row, after sweeping San Jose State to start the 2014 campaign. Freshman Margaret Latchford led all players with 18 digs on Friday, the most digs by a Liberty freshman in a season opener during the rally scoring era. On the Attack Through six matches this season, the Lady Flames have had five different leaders in kills, in Jade Vorster, Sirena Vorster, Gabrielle Vess, Caroline Douglas and Haley Jeffcoat. Sophomore Gabrielle Vess leads Liberty with 2.82 kills per set. She scored a careerhigh 19 kills on Aug. 29 against Fairleigh Dickinson. Redshirt senior Caroline Douglas, a two-time all-conference first team choice, scored her 55th career double-digit kill match, with 10 kills on Friday against Loyola Marymount. Serving up Aces Liberty served up a season-high 10 aces on Aug. 29 against Hampton, the team s first 10-ace match since Sept. 15, 2012 at Virginia. Sophomore Susan Babcock recorded a career-high four aces against Hampton and Houston Baptist. Becca Haraf, in 2012, was the last Lady Flame to post two four-ace matches in one season. Setting the Tone Sophomore Anna Willey has shown versatility so far, as she is ranked fourth in the Big South in assists and eighth in blocks. She has matched her season total from 2014, with two double-doubles this season. Willey also dished out a career-high 46 assists in a win over Fairleigh Dickinson, Aug. 29. Dig In Freshman Margaret Latchford recorded back-to-back 18 dig matches to start her career, and currently averages 3.74 digs per set, ranking eighth in the conference. Junior Michelle Melendez collected a career-high 22 digs on Aug. 29 against Fairleigh Dickinson, while senior Allie Reynolds recorded her 15th career double-digit dig match with 11 digs versus FDU.

Liberty vs. Missouri (First Meeting) Missouri has started the season 6-0, sweeping back-to-back tournaments on the first two weekends. The Tigers ranked second in the SEC in hitting percentage (.328) and blocks per set (2.78) entering the week. Two-time AVCA honorable mention All-American Carly Kan averages 4.17 kills per set. Alyssa Munlyn paces the Tigers with 1.17 blocks per set. Taking to the Road The Lady Flames are in the midst of a stretch of 10 straight matches away from Lynchburg. Liberty s next match at the Vines Center will be Oct. 2 against Gardner-Webb. Liberty also played 10 straight matches away from home, Sept. 6 through Oct. 1, Top of the List Liberty Head Coach Shane Pinder is in his 12th season and holds a (.584) overall career record, including (.728) in Big South play. On Oct. 3, 2014 at Gardner-Webb, he passed Chris Phillips ( , 99-03) for first place on Liberty s all-time volleyball wins list. With a 3-1 win at UNC Asheville on Oct. 4, he became the fourth volleyball coach in Big South history with 200 or more career wins. Liberty redshirt senior outside hitter Caroline Douglas and senior middle blocker Jade Vorster were both voted to the 2015 Big South Volleyball Preseason All-Conference team. 1,000 Kill Club Redshirt junior Caroline Douglas became the 15th member of Liberty s 1,000-kill club on Oct. 18, 2014 at Coastal Carolina. On Oct. 18 at Coastal Carolina, the Lady Flames posted their 20th win, trailing just Colorado State by one day in the race to become the first NCAA Division I team to 20 victories in The Lady Flames started out the conference schedule at 9-0, the best start to Big South play in program history. Injuries curtailed the season, as Liberty finished out a campaign, including 10-4 in Big South play. On Sept. 23, the Lady Flames picked up a big, 3-2 win over Virginia, Liberty s first victory against the Cavaliers since 1979, a span of 30 meetings. Shane Pinder became Liberty s winningest volleyball coach on Oct. 3, recording his 199th career coaching victory. Liberty was 14-1 when winning the first set last season, while going 9-9 in matches after losing the first session. The Lady Flames have now posted 20 or more overall victories and 10 or more Big South wins in seven out of the last eight seasons. This is the fifth time in the last six seasons in which Liberty has had four All-Big South selections. Weidner and Sirena Vorster appeared on the Big South All-Freshman team, while Stapleton was named to the All-Academic team. Additionally, Douglas was named to the VaSID All-State University Division Volleyball first team, while Weidner was voted VaSID State Rookie of the Year.
