The Lady Flames face Southern Utah on Friday at noon (ET) before taking on Air Force at 5 p.m. (ET) on Friday and noon (ET), Saturday. Liberty will be facing both programs for the first time this weekend. Additionally, this will be the first time since 1999 that the Lady Flames have faced the same team on backto-back days. STARTING ROTATION 1. Liberty picked up its first win of the season on Aug. 26 against Hofstra (20-10 record in 2016), posting 14.5 blocks. Liberty s 14.5 blocks against Hofstra were its most since a 16-block match at Presbyterian, Oct. 15, Casey Goodwin was named to the Liberty Invitational All-Tournament team, averaging 2.50 kills per set and 1.00 blocks per set. She led Liberty in kills for the first two matches on the weekend, and posted back-to-back five-block matches. 3. Margaret Latchford collected a season-high 30 digs on Saturday against Elon. She needs 34 digs to become the 21st player in program history with 1,000 career digs. 4. Shane Pinder, in his 14th season as Liberty s head coach, is the program s all-time winningest coach, at Gabrielle Vess leads Liberty with 3.11 kills per set. She scored 16 kills and added a career-high 22 digs on Saturday against Elon. Her 22 digs were the most by a Liberty outside hitter since Lillie Happel s 23 digs at UNC Asheville, Nov. 11, The Lady Flames were predicted to finish third in the Big South preseason coaches poll. Additionally, senior setter Anna Willey and sophomore middle blocker Anna Gragg were voted to the Preseason All-Big South team. 7. Liberty leads the Big South with digs per set on the season. On Saturday against Elon, Margaret Latchford (30 digs) and Gabrielle Vess (22) became the first Liberty teammates since Sept. 26, 2014 against Radford to both collect 20+ digs in the same match. Willey is a two-time all-conference selection, while Gragg received All-Big South honorable mention as a freshman last year. Digging Deep Liberty leads the Big South with digs per set this season, ranking 40th in the nation. The Lady Flames averaged digs per set at the Liberty Invitational. Margaret Latchford (4.29 dps) is ranked fifth in the conference. With 966 career digs, she needs 34 more digs to become the 21st player in program history with 1,000 or more digs. Latchford collected a program freshman-record 502 digs in On Saturday against Elon, Margaret Latchford (30 digs) and Gabrielle Vess (22) became the first Liberty teammates since Caila Stapleton (25) and Gabrielle Shipe (24), Sept. 26, 2014 against Radford, with 20+ digs in the same match. Victoria Baptista, a transfer from Panola College in Texas, became the first player since Karyl Bacon in 2007 to collect 10+ digs in each of her first three matches at Liberty. Top Honors Casey Goodwin picked up her second career all-tournament honor, being named to the Liberty Invitational All-Tournament team. She led Liberty with 10 kills against Maryland on Friday before scoring a team-high nine kills on Saturday versus Furman. Goodwin recorded five blocks in both matches on Saturday. Blocking the Way A year after leading the Big South with 2.45 blocks per set, Liberty has picked up its net defense where it left off. The Lady Flames average 2.07 blocks per set. In Liberty s 3-1 win over Hofstra on Aug. 26, the Lady Flames posted four straight blocks down the stretch to seal the win. Liberty posted 14.5 blocks against Hofstra, led by six blocks by Kainah Williams. This season, Anna Gragg (1.12) ranks third in the Big South in blocks per set. Gragg set a program freshman record with 108 blocks last season, tying Sirena Vorster. Both Gragg and Vorster were named honorable mention all-conference in On the Attack Gabrielle Vess leads Liberty with 3.11 kills per set, good for third in the Big South. She has posted a pair of double-digit kills matches this season, including 14 kills against Virginia and a season-high 16 on Saturday against Elon. Anna Gragg tied her career high with 15 kills on Aug. 26 against Hofstra, the secondmost kills (to Vess 16 against Elon) by a Lady Flame this season. Double-Double Amaya Williams, making her first start on Aug. 26 against Virginia, registered a double-double with 36 assists and 10 digs. She is the first Liberty freshman since Lillie Happel (Aug. 27, 2010 vs. Cleveland State) to record a double-double in her first start. Senior Anna Willey is Liberty s active career leader in double-doubles, with 27, including 12 double-doubles in both 2015 and Gabrielle Vess has six career double-doubles, and Hannah Morris, three. Setting the Stage Senior Anna Willey ranks eighth in program history with 2,347 career assists. She has ranked second in the Big South in assists each of the last two years. Willey dished out a season-high 45 assists on Aug. 26 against Hofstra. Sophomore Hannah Morris played well when called upon as a freshman last year, registering four 40-assist matches, one 50-assist contest and three double-doubles. Freshman Amaya Williams dished out 36 assists on Aug. 26 against Virginia, giving Liberty three setters with at least one career 30-assist contest.

The Thunderbirds picked up five-set wins over defending MEAC champion Howard and Cal State Fullerton while in California. Macky Fifita leads SUU with 3.88 kills per set, good for third in the Big Sky Conference. MaCail Evans averages 1.33 blocks per set, ranking fourth in the conference. Alexis Averett is third in the Big Sky with 9.78 assists per set. Liberty and Southern Utah have one common opponent this season, as both teams fell, 3-1, to Elon. Liberty is looking for its first win over a Big Sky team in program history. The Lady Flames are 0-2 against Northern Arizona (2003, 2015) and 0-1 versus Montana (2009). Liberty vs. Air Force Series Record: First Meeting Air Force (4-3) went 2-1 last weekend at the Service Academy Challenge in Washington, D.C., sweeping Army West Point and The Citadel while falling to Columbia in five sets. Denise Ssozi averages a team-best 4.00 kills per set, good for fifth in the Mountain West Conference. Shanleigh Conlan is ranked fifth in the conference with 9.96 assists per set. Liberty is 1-2 all-time against members of the Mountain West Conference at time of meeting. On Aug. 29, 2014, the Lady Flames swept Mountain West member San Jose State, 3-0. Liberty is 0-1 all-time against Utah State (2013) and Utah (2004) Welcome Home Both of Liberty s assistant coaches, Cassie Crumal and Kindra Gillen, grew up in the state of Colorado. Crumal, from Castle Rock, Colo., attended Chapparal High School before competing collegiately at William & Mary. Gillen, formerly Carlson, went to Eaton High School in Eaton, Colo., before playing at Washington. Twice as Nice Liberty will face Air Force both Friday and Saturday. The elder Vorster was a four-time all-conference player, including twice at Hawai i. Jade Vorster holds Liberty s rally-scoring single-season record for attack percentage (.358 in 2015) and solo blocks (32 in 2014). Sophomore Hannah Morris joined the roster last season, after her older sister, Rachel Morris, served as a backup setter for the Lady Flames in 2014 and Sophomore Kainah Williams and freshman Amaya Williams are not related. Tale of Two Seasons Following a five-set loss at Radford on Sept. 27, 2016, Liberty was 5-9 on the season, including 0-2 in Big South play. To that point in the season, the Lady Flames were hitting.162 as a team, compared to.157 by opponents. Additionally, Liberty averaged kills per set. On the verge of losing its third straight conference match, Sept. 30 at UNC Asheville, Liberty rallied from a 2-0 deficit to win, 3-2, and spark an eight-match winning streak. During the streak, the Lady Flames won five five-set matches, rallying from 2-1 deficits on four occasions. All told, Liberty went 5-2 in Big South five-set contests. Liberty went 11-3 in its last 14 regular-season matches in Kill Club Five Lady Flames have posted at least one career double-digit kill match. Casey Goodwin s 20 kills against USC Upstate on Sept. 9, 2016 were the most by a current Liberty player. The following players have recorded double-digit kill matches, with career highs in parentheses. Gabrielle Vess (19), Anna Gragg (15), Sirena Vorster (14) and Payton Carter (10). 10+-Dig Club Margaret Latchford collected a program rally-scoring-record 38 digs on Oct. 9, 2015 at Campbell. She is one of six current Lady Flames with at least one double-digit dig match in her career. The following players have also recorded double-digit dig matches, with career highs in parentheses. Gabrielle Vess (22), Anna Willey (19), Victoria Baptista (16), Hannah Morris (15) and Amaya Williams (10). First Time for Everything On Oct. 22, 2016, Liberty rallied for a 3-2 win at Gardner-Webb. During that match, Sirena Vorster recorded 12 kills, six blocks and six aces, becoming the first Lberty player in rally-scoring history to post 12 kills, six blocks and six aces in the same match Last season, Anna Willey and Hannah Morris became the first Liberty teammates since Courtney Boggs and Kallie Corbin in 2009 to both record at least one 50-assist match during the same season. 6 HEAD COACH SHANE PINDER WINNINGEST HEAD COACH IN LIBERTY VOLLEYBAL HISTORY Liberty Head Coach Shane Pinder, in his 14th season, holds a career record. On Oct. 3, 2014 at Gardner-Webb, he passed Chris Phillips ( , 99-03) for first place on Liberty s all-time volleyball wins list. With a 3-1 win at UNC Asheville the next day, he became the fourth volleyball coach in Big South history with 200 or more career wins. Pinder is now second all-time in career wins among Big South volleyball coaches, trailing only longtime UNC Asheville coach Julie Torbett, who won 337 matches. - Liberty has won one set in two NCAA Tournament matches, against No. 7 California in 2007 (30-26 in set two) and at No. 4 Nebraska in 2008 (25-21 in set two).
