Siegel Center - Richmond, Va. For the second week in a row, the Liberty volleyball team will be competing at an Atlantic 10 venue. Last weekend, the Lady Flames played at the Davidson Wildcat Classic, while they will compete in this week s VCU Invitational, Friday and Saturday at the Siegel Center. Liberty (3-6) faces Morgan State (0-11) on Friday at 3 p.m., before taking on Middle Tennessee (2-8) and VCU (5-6), Saturday. Liberty has posted a 2-1 record all-time against Morgan State, while going 0-1 versus Middle Tennessee and against VCU. How to Follow the Lady Flames Live stats will be available for all matches at this weekend s VCU Invitational. Live stats will appear through Sidearm Stats, courtesy of VCU Athletic Media Relations. Liberty s Saturday match against VCU will be available for viewing, for a small charge, through video streaming on the Atlantic 10 Network. Starting Rotation 1. Liberty posted a 1-2 record at the Davidson Wildcat Classic, earning a four-set victory over 2015 SoCon champion Furman. 2. Freshman right-side hitter Casey Goodwin was named Big South Freshman of the Week after averaging 3.63 kills and 0.77 aces per set and hitting.365 at the Davidson Wildcat Classic. She recorded her first career 20-kill match last Friday. 3. Liberty leads the Big South and ranks 28th nationally with 2.72 blocks per set. Sirena Vorster (1.38 bps) and Anna Gragg (1.29) are first and second in the Big South, respectively. 4. Anna Willey became the 10th player in program history with 1,500 career assists, Saturday at Davidson. On Friday against USC Upstate, freshman Hannah Morris became the first Liberty freshman setter with a 50-assist match since Jade Craycraft in The Lady Flames posted their second 10-ace match of the season on Saturday at Davidson. Casey Goodwin served up five aces, the first Lady Flame to do so since Liberty started three true freshmen in its season opener against Pitt on Aug. 26, the first time since 2000 that three or more true freshmen started the season opener. A total of six true freshmen have made at least one start this season. 7. Shane Pinder, in his 13th season as Liberty s head coach, became the program s all-time leader in career victories Oct. 3, 2014 at Gardner-Webb. She scored a career-high 20 kills on Friday against USC Upstate, becoming the first Liberty freshman since Hannah Weidner, Oct. 18, 2014, to record a 20-kill match. Goodwin then recorded 18 kills and five blocks in a win over Furman, Saturday, before posting a career-high five aces on Saturday at Davidson. Serving Up Aces On Saturday at Davidson, Liberty served up 10 aces, one shy of a season high that was set against Hampton. Casey Goodwin served up five aces, becoming the first Lady Flame since Kendle Rollins against Jacksonville, Aug. 31, 2012, with five aces in a match. Goodwin is ranked 39th nationally with 0.48 aces per set. Sirena Vorster and Hannah Morris both have one four-ace match this season. Tough at the Net Liberty leads the Big South with 2.72 blocks per set. Entering the week, the Lady Flames ranked 28th nationally in blocks per set. Sirena Vorster is ranked first in the Big South with 1.38 blocks per set, followed in second by Anna Gragg at Vorster recorded a career-high nine blocks against Missouri. Gragg posted a career-high nine blocks versus USC Upstate Friday, becoming the first Liberty freshman since Loren Thomas in 2009 with a nine-block match. On Sept. 3 against ETSU, Gragg posted seven blocks and Casey Goodwin added six, the first time in rally-scoring history that two Liberty freshmen have registered six or more blocks in the same match. Dishing it Out Both of Liberty s setters had milestone matches last weekend at Davidson. On Friday against USC Upstate, Hannah Morris dished out a career-high 51 assists. She became the first Liberty freshman since Jade Craycraft (52 assists) at Coastal Carolina, Nov. 6, 2010, with 50 assists in a match. On Saturday, Willey overtook Lara Bartolomeo ( ) into 10th place all-time in program history for career assists. In the match at Davidson, she became the 10th Liberty setter all-time with 1,500 career assists. Willey led the conference with assists per set during Big South matches last year. She also posted a team-high 12 double-doubles, while adding assist matches, seven 50-assist contests and one 60-assist match. On a Tear Redshirt sophomore Sydney Morris has entered double figures in kills in each of the last four matches, including a career-high 12 kills on Saturday against Furman. Her streak of consecutive 10-kill matches is the longest since Caroline Douglas ended her career with 10+ kills in each of her last five career matches, last season. Sirena Vorster posted her first 10-kill match of the season against Furman, becoming the fifth Lady Flame to reach double figures in kills this year. Current Lady Flames Hannah Weidner had kill matches as a freshman in Double-Double the Fun On Aug. 27 against Kennesaw State, Leah Clayton (15 kills, 17 digs), Hannah Morris (47 assists, 12 digs) and Gabrielle Vess (16 kills, 13 digs) all posted double-doubles. Clayton and Morris were the first Liberty freshman teammates since Jade Craycraft and Lillie Happel Nov. 19, 2010 at Winthrop to record double-doubles in the same match. With Sydney Morris (12 kills, 11 digs) recording her first career double-double on Saturday against Furman, five Lady Flames have registered at least one double-double so far this season. Liberty vs. Middle Tennessee (Middle Tennessee leads series, 1-0) Last Meeting: Middle Tennessee 3, Liberty 0 (Sept. 19, Blacksburg, Va.) Middle Tennessee enters the week with a 2-8 record after falling at Wake Forest on Wednesday. The Blue Raiders won their season opener against Louisiana Monroe, and defeated Tennessee Tech, last Saturday to end a seven-match losing streak. With the graduation of two-time All-Conference USA first team selection Chelsea Ross, the Blue Raiders have had big shoes to fill. Bailey Mason leads MT with 2.25 kills per set, followed by Regan Coughlin, with 2.06 kills per set. Liberty vs. VCU (VCU leads series, 15-14) Last Meeting: Liberty 3, VCU 0 (Oct. 6, Lynchburg, Va.) Last VCU Win: VCU 3, Liberty 0 (Sept. 6, Lexington, Ky.) VCU holds a 5-6 record, including back-to-back wins over Charleston Southern and William & Mary in its last two matches. The Rams have also defeated High Point, 3-1, on Sept. 6 at the Siegel Center. Similarly to Liberty, VCU has a large freshman class, with eight freshmen on the roster. The Rams return 2015 A-10 All-Freshman team members Sahbria McLetchie, Tori Baldwin and Indigo Thompson. McLetchie paces VCU with 3.62 kills per set, while Alica Kandler averages 2.79 kills per set. Rebekah Strange averages 5.18 digs per set. Fresh Faces The Lady Flames have seven freshmen on the roster this season. Six newcomers have already started at least one match, including as many as four at a time. On Aug. 26 against Pitt, Leah Clayton, Casey Goodwin and Kainah Williams all started. It marked the first time since Sept. 1, 2000 that three or more Liberty true freshmen started the season opener. In 2000, Erin McKeown, Theresa Passamani, Tatiana Tkachuk and Simone Turner all drew the start in a 3-1 setback to Texas Tech in Columbia, S.C. It s Been A While Liberty will look for its first win against VCU in the Siegel Center since Sept. 9, The Rams have won the last five meetings in Richmond. Top of the List Liberty Head Coach Shane Pinder is in his 13th season and holds a overall career record. On Oct. 3, 2014 at Gardner-Webb, he passed Chris Phillips ( , 99-03) for first place on Liberty s all-time volleyball wins list. With a 3-1 win at UNC Asheville on Oct. 4, he became the fourth volleyball coach in Big South history with 200 or more career wins. Pinder earned his 224th career win on Sept. 3 against Hampton, passing former Coastal Carolina Head Coach Kristen Bauer ( ) for second all-time in career wins among Big South volleyball coaches.
