Few in the history of the sport can compete with the accomplishments of the Cardinal s decorated head coach. In 2008, Dunning, the reigning Pac-10 Coach of the Year, enters his eighth season at the helm of the Cardinal. In his time on The Farm, he has helped Stanford further strengthen its hold as one of the premier collegiate volleyball programs in the United States. Dunning has been in the spotlight of NCAA volleyball since he began his coaching career 23 years ago at Pacific. Since then, he has collected four national titles, matching former Cardinal coach Don Shaw for the most in NCAA history. Dunning also ranks among the top five coaches all-time with an.827 career winning percentage, and among the top ten active coaches with 645 career wins. Entering the 2008 season, Dunning boasts a career record, with a (.863) mark at Stanford. In his seven years on The Farm, Dunning has had nine athletes earn 20 All- America honors and has coached three AVCA National Players of the Year. His teams have also posted a (.768) record in the NCAA Tournament. At Stanford Dunning took the reins of the Cardinal program in July 2001 and, in his very first year, coached Stanford to an unprecedented fifth NCAA Championship and ninth Pac-10 Conference title. The Cardinal s 33-2 overall mark tied the school record for most wins in a single season on The Farm. Dunning also became the first Division I head coach to win a national championship in his first season at two different schools (Pacific and Stanford). For his efforts, he was honored as the Pac-10 Coach of the Year as well as the AVCA National Coach of the Year. Dunning had two athletes named AVCA All-Americans, including National Player of the Year Logan Tom. Three players garnered first-team All-Pac-10 honors while one, Ogonna Nnamani, was tabbed Conference Freshman of the Year as well as ASICS/Volleyball Magazine National Freshman of the Year. In 2002, Stanford finished second nationally, battling its way to the NCAA title match. That year, Dunning led the Cardinal to a 32-5 record and another NCAA Final Four appearance. The team finished as the NCAA runner-up, while three players were tabbed AVCA All-Americans and Logan Tom repeated as the AVCA National Player of the Year. Outside hitter Ogonna Nnamani was also honored as an Academic All-American. In 2003, Dunning led the Cardinal to a 25-7 overall record and its 23rd consecutive appearance in the NCAA tournament. Ogonna Nnamani was honored as an AVCA first-team All-American while teammate Jennifer Harvey was a second-team selection. Kristin Richards was tabbed Pac-10 Freshman of the Year as well as Volleyball Magazine s National Freshman of the Year. In 2004, Stanford reached the title match of the NCAA Tournament for the third time in four years, and once again, captured the NCAA crown with a three-game sweep of Minnesota. Dunning coached the Cardinal to a 30-6 overall record and the sixth national title in school history. Ogonna Nnamani, Stanford s top player, gained AVCA All-America honors for a fourth-straight season. In addition, Nnamani was named the 2005 Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year (Honda-Broderick Cup), a 2005 NCAA Today s Top Eight Award recipient, the Pac-10 Player of the Year and received an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship. 3 Coaching Staff first-team All-American, and an all-conference first team selection. Franci Girard, Katie Goldhahn, Leahi Hall, Jen Hucke, Bryn Kehoe, Courtney Schultz and Lizzie Suiter also gained numerous postseason athletic and academic honors. In 2005, Dunning led Stanford to a 26-6 record and a 25th consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance. He was also a recipient of the USA Volleyball All-Time Great Coach Award, presented each year by USA Volleyball, the national governing body of the sport, to recognize the all-time great coaches of volleyball. After a one-year absence, Dunning led Stanford back to the NCAA title match in Under Dunning s guidance, Stanford posted a 30-4 record, claimed its first outright Pac-10 title since 2001 and made an NCAA Tournament run that culminated in its 16th trip to the NCAA Final Four. On October 20, 2006, Dunning earned his 600th win as a head coach against Oregon. A school-record four players earned AVCA All-America honors. In 2007, Dunning continued to build on the tradition of success. Stanford repeated as the Pac-10 Champion for the first time in Dunning s tenure and, for his efforts, he was named the Pac-10 Coach of the Year. Stanford went 32-3 on its way to a 17th NCAA Final Four appearance, and reached the NCAA Championship match for the third time in four years. The Cardinal swept the postseason Pac-10 awards for the first time since 2001, with Alix Klineman earning conference freshman of the year honors, Foluke Akinradewo being named Pac-10 Player of the Year and Dunning earning the distinction as the conference s top coach. For the second consecutive year, a school-record four Stanford players earned AVCA All-America honors. Klineman was named the Volleyball Magazine National Freshman of the Year, while Akinradewo was recognized as the AVCA National Player of the Year. At Pacific Prior to coming to Stanford, Dunning spent 16 seasons as the head coach at Pacific. In his tenure in Stockton, he compiled an impressive (.811) record, was named Big West Coach of the Year four times and led the Tigers to two NCAA Championships, an NCAA runner-up finish, five Big West Conference titles and 16 consecutive NCAA postseason tournament bids. An outstanding student and teacher of the game of volleyball, 16 of his Tiger athletes were recognized on the national stage with a total of 29 All-American awards. In 2007, Dunning was inducted into the University of the Pacific Hall of Fame. The next year, 1986, he helped the squad repeat its landmark. Dunning s pair of titles with the volleyball program remain the only two national championships in any sport in Pacific s history. Over his 16 seasons, Dunning led his teams to a combined record in postseason action, an unmatched 10-1 record in Big West Conference Tournament play and a stellar mark in the NCAA Tournament. Of the 16 squads coached by Dunning, 14 reached NCAA Regionals, advancing to the regional championship match seven times. Four of Dunning s squads reached the NCAA Final Four, including the two national championship teams, the 1990 national runner-up team and his 1999 squad that went In 2000, his final year with the program, Dunning earned Big West Coach of the Year honors for a second straight season, as the Tigers won a second-consecutive Big West title. His squad posted a 28-4 overall record, reached the regional semifinal and had two players earn All-American status. Other Accomplishments Prior to beginning his career at the collegiate level, Dunning has made a name for himself as one of the country s top prep and junior club coaches. The founder of the Bay Club, a USAV Junior Club, he also spent nine successful years as the head coach at Sunnyvale s Fremont High School. His teams at Fremont High were among the top five in the state each of his last six years, also capturing eight league John Dunning is the only Division I women s volleyball coach to win an NCAA Championship as a first-year head coach at two different schools. In 1985 at Pacific, he became the first first-year coach in NCAA history to win a national title, and in 2001 he repeated the feat as a first-year head coach at Stanford. After being selected as the California Coaches Association Prep Coach of the Year in 1980, Dunning was a finalist for National High School Coach of the Year in His impressive (.898) high school record makes him one of the most successful prep coaches in California history. In 1980, he founded the Bay Club and built it into one of the country s most successful and well-managed junior programs in just four years. His team won the national championship in With his accomplishments at the junior club and high school level, combined with his success in collegiate volleyball, Dunning is one of only two coaches to have captured national titles on three different levels. He led squads to national championships on the high school, club and collegiate ranks. Dunning has also been considered one of the top coaches on a national level, as he was selected to coach the north squad at the 1995 U.S. Olympic Festival where he led the team to a gold medal. From 1993 to 1994, he served as president of the American Volleyball Coaches Association. He served the two previous years as the NCAA Division I representative to the AVCA Board of Directors, and has been a member of the AVCA Division I All-America Selection Committee many times. Dunning also served as interim athletic director at Pacific in In May 2008, he was named to the USA Volleyball Board of Directors. Personal Dunning earned his bachelor of arts degree in mathematics and economics from San Diego State in He coached volleyball and taught mathematics at a high school level in the Bay Area from 1973 to John and his wife Julie have two children, Lauren and Lisa (husband Matt Dobbins), and a granddaughter, McKenzie. He is one of two NCAA coaches to have won a title at two different schools NCAA Championship Matches Dunning and Shaw are the only two coaches in NCAA women s volleyball history to have coached in eight national championship matches. NCAA Final Four Appearances Dunning has taken nine of his teams to the Final Four, including five of the seven teams he has coached at Stanford. NCAA Regional Appearances Dunning s teams have advanced to an NCAA Regional nine of the last 10 seasons, and 20 times since Consecutive NCAA Tournament Appearances Dunning has taken his team to the NCAA Tournament in each one of his 23 seasons as a head coach. NCAA Tournament Wins Dunning boasts a record in the NCAA Tournament, having won more than 75 percent of the postseason matches he has coached. Conference Championships Dunning has captured eight conference titles, including three in his seven seasons in the Pac-10 Conference. Dunning is the winningest active coach in the Pac-10 in terms of not only career winning percentage, but winning percentage in Pac-10 matches. 30-Win Seasons Dunning s teams have posted 30 or more wins 10 different times, including each of the last two seasons. In 2001, his Cardinal squad s 33-win season matched a school record for wins. Career Wins Dunning recorded his 600th career victory on Oct. 20, He is one of 15 active Division I coaches to have hit the milestone, and stands 10th among active coaches in terms of career victories. Dunning needs five wins in 2008 to become the 17th coach ever to reach 650 wins. All-Americans Dunning has coached 25 All-Americans to 49 total All-America awards in his 23 seasons as a head coach. 5 Coaching Staff Associate Head Coach Denise Corlett A former U.S. National Team player and one of the nation s most respected assistants, Denise Corlett has spent 19 years on The Farm as an interim head coach, an associate head coach and an assistant coach. In 2008, she begins her 13th year in the associate head coach role. Denise is a remarkable multi-tasker, said head coach John Dunning. She does an exceptional job recruiting, which is one aspect of her job that she truly loves. Denise spends a lot of time traveling to see recruits play, as well as getting to know their coaches and families. She knows more about Stanford than just about anyone. The Cardinal is (.861) during her association with the program, having won six NCAA championships and 10 Pac-10 titles. The six national titles include Stanford s back-to-back titles in 1996 and 1997, as well as six consecutive conference titles from Following the Cardinal s national title win in 1996, Corlett was promoted to associate head coach. Corlett has also made a name for herself at the national level. She spent the summer of 1993 serving as an assistant coach for the silver medal U.S. team at the World University Games in Buffalo, NY, which included former Stanford All-American Cary Wendell. Corlett also spent time with the 1997 World University Games squad, which featured Stanford products Eileen Murfee and Lisa Sharpley. Corlett was tabbed an assistant coach for the 2003 Pan American Games team, which claimed the Bronze medal with help from former Stanford All- American Ogonna Nnamani. She was also an assistant coach for the A2 team that went to Montreux, Switzerland in 2005 and served as the head of delegation for the Junior World Championship team in 2007 and the Junior NORCECA team in This past June, Corlett was the head of delegation for the U.S. at the Pan Am Cup in Mexicali, Mexico, where current Cardinal players Cynthia Barboza and Alix Klineman, as well as former Stanford standout Kristin Richards competed. Prior to coming to The Farm, Corlett served as an assistant at San Jose State from During that time, the Spartans went and reached the NCAA Tournament twice. Prior to her tenure at San Jose State, Corlett spent five years assisting at UCLA, her alma mater. Corlett served as a graduate assistant for two years and a volunteer assistant for three years, helping the Bruins to the 1985 Final Four. She has also been the business manager for the U.S. Women s National Team. From , Corlett founded and coached the Griffin Volleyball Club and immediately established it as one of the nation s top programs. Her andunder team took third place at the Junior Olympics and featured former Stanford great Lisa Sharpley, as well as several other top collegiate players. In recognition, USA Volleyball named Corlett the Outstanding Female Junior Olympic Coach for Corlett also helped start the Vision Volleyball Club and Club Yahoo. Corlett received a bachelor s degree in mathematics from UCLA in At UCLA, Corlett played three varsity sports and was named the All-University Athlete of the Year in She was the national badminton champion in 1977 and won the Broderick Award for that sport. She was a three-time All- American in volleyball and played on the Bruins national championship women s basketball team. She led her USVBA team to national championships in both 1978 and 1979, played for the USA in the 1979 University Games in Mexico City and played for the U.S. National Team in 1982 and In 1997, she was selected as one of the top 25 players in UCLA women s volleyball history. In 1999, Corlett was inducted into the UCLA Athletics Hall of Fame for volleyball, basketball and badminton. Her class included track and field great, Gail Devers, and football quarterback, Troy Aikman. In 2005, Corlett was named to the Cal-Hi Sports Top 100 Female Athletes list. Corlett s grandfather (Bruce Alexander Russell) was the editorial cartoonist for the Los Angeles Times for 33 years, and won the Pulitzer Prize for editorial cartoons in Stanford Women s Volleyball 29

6 Assistant Coach Jason Mansfield Jason Mansfield begins his fifth year as a full-time assistant coach for the Cardinal and his seventh with the Stanford program. Mansfield shares in all of the program s coaching responsibilities. Mansfield has been instrumental in helping the Cardinal maintain a place among the powerhouses of collegiate volleyball. In his six years with the program, Stanford has advanced to the NCAA Final Four on four occasions, been in the national title match four times and won a national championship. During the 2002 and 2003 seasons, Mansfield served as a volunteer coach, helping Stanford reach the NCAA title match in his first year on The Farm. In 2004, Mansfield took on full-time responsibilities and helped the Cardinal to its sixth NCAA Championship. In his four years as a full-time assistant, Mansfield has aided the team in winning two Pac-10 titles (2006 and 2007), making three appearances in the NCAA Final Four (2004, 2006 and 2007) and reaching the national championship match three times (2004, 2006 and 2007). He has coached 18 All-Americans and three AVCA National Players of the Year. Mansfield brings 13 years of coaching experience to The Farm, most recently having worked with Vision Volleyball Club as the 18-1 s head coach ( ). Mansfield s club teams have finished fifth or better seven times at the Junior Olympics, winning a gold medal (1997), a silver medal (2004) and a bronze medal (2008). He has coached 15 Junior Olympic All-Americans. Mansfield has also coached at Homestead High School (Boys / 6 yrs.), Los Altos High School (Girls / 5 yrs.), Foothill Junior College (Women / 3 yrs.) and Cupertino Junior High (Boys / 2 yrs.). Mansfield earned his business management degree at Ashworth University in Coaching Staff Volunteer Assistant Coach Chris Muscat Chris Muscat returns to the Cardinal for his second season as a volunteer assistant coach this fall. Last year, Muscat helped the Stanford on its run to the NCAA title match. This year, he will be a full-time addition to the Stanford staff and looks to help the Cardinal in its quest for another Final Four berth. At Stanford, he assists in practice and focuses his efforts on individual skill development and scouting. Muscat will also be in charge of video editing and analysis this season. A Bay Area native, Muscat played volleyball at UCLA and graduated in He has coached junior girls for both Main Beach Volleyball Club and Vision Volleyball Club. Before making the transition to girls, Chris served as the head coach for the 18 s team for a local junior boys club, Bay to Bay Volleyball Club. Chris and his wife, Chrissy, are expecting a daughter this season. Support Staff Director of Volleyball Operations Cobey Shoji Cobey Shoji is entering her fifth season as the Director of Volleyball Operations. Her responsibilities include marketing and promotions, external relations, accounting and travel. Shoji came to Stanford from the University of North Carolina (Chapel Hill) where she received her Master s degree in athletic administration in She also taught undergraduate physical education classes, worked as a special events coordinator in development for the Rams Club and in athletic event management while at North Carolina. Shoji, who hails from Honolulu, Hawai i, received her bachelor s degree in sports management and communications from the University of Michigan in She played volleyball at UNLV and Michigan as a defensive specialist/setter. Shoji has coached for Rebel Volleyball Club in Las Vegas, Punahou School in Honolulu, Triangle Volleyball Club in Durham, NC and currently coaches for Vision Volleyball Club. She is the daughter of longtime Hawai i women s volleyball Head Coach Dave Shoji. Her brothers, Kawika and Erik, are members of the Cardinal men s volleyball team. 8 1 Cynthia Barboza 6-0 Senior Outside Hitter Long Beach, CA (Long Beach Wilson) Cynthia is one of the most complete players in the collegiate game right now, and, without a doubt, her exceptional all-around abilities will be huge keys to our success this year. Her continued experience with the national team over the spring and summer has pushed her game to a whole new level, and, as a senior leader, we will look to her to raise the bar for our entire team this season.
