The Tigers came out and hit.468 in a dominating sweep of Mississippi Valley State behind a 10-kill effort from senior Emily Wilson. Junior Regan Peltier also added eight kills on.615 hitting in the win. Mizzou had its 35-match regular season winning streak snapped in a three-set loss to Northwestern State in the second match of the tournament. Sophomore Carly Kan led Mizzou with 15 kills in that match. In the nightcap, Mizzou bounced back to defeat host North Texas in five sets. Kan and Loxley Keala had double-doubles in the win. Weekend Schedule Below is the weekend schedule for the Tiger Invitational. Lipscomb is coming off of a big win at No. 22 Kansas and Illinois State took Oregon, ranked No. 22 this week, to five-sets and defeated Ohio State in Eugene last weekend. Below is a look at each team. Lipscomb: Mizzou last met the feisty Lipscomb team in 2012, a 3-0 Mizzou win in Nashville, but this year s Lipscomb team comes into the weekend with plenty of confidence after defeating No. 22 Kansas in Lawrence last weekend. Getting votes in this week s AVCA Top-25 poll, the Bison are 2-1 on the season and led by reigning Atlantic Sun Player of the Week Brittany Estes, who tallied a triple-double against No. 23 Creighton last week along with a double-double against KU. Illinois State: Illinois State comes into the Mizzou Tiger Invitational with an overall record of 2-1 after competing in the University of Oregon Tournament. Ashley Rosch dominates the team s attack by averaging 3.79 kills per set. Following behind her, only two other Redbirds average 2.0 kills per set or better. On defense, the team averages 2.2 blocks per set with Emily Schneider averaging 1.21 blocks per set herself. Oakland: Oakland comes into the Mizzou Tiger Invitational at 2-2 overall upon completion of the Western Michigan Tournament. Three Grizzlies dominate the attack with over 2.00 kills per set, and Melissa Deatsch leads the team with an average of 2.81 kills per set. On defense, the team averages 1.7 blocks per set with Jessica Dood averaging.88 blocks per set. The Grizzlies finished the last season with a record of Xavier: Xavier enters Friday s match with an undefeated record at 3-0 after winning the Queen City Invitational in Cincinnati for the start of the season. Abbey Bessler has been a vital player to the Musketeers with an average of 3.25 kills per set and over 121 total attacks. Makayla Agin has also done some damage for the Musketeers as she too averages over 3.00 kills per set. The team hits.263 collectively and limits their opponent to only.175. Xavier pulls in 14.5 digs per set and an average of 2.0 blocks on defense. Tiger Invitational History Mizzou has historically done very will in the Tiger Invitational, boasting a 35-3 overall mark since the Tournament s inception. In the 10 previous Tiger Invitationals, Mizzou has won all but one and has won six of the last seven with the only second-place nod coming in 2012 when nationally-ranked and eventual Final Four participant Michigan topped the Tigers. 5 Kreklows Closing in on Win #300 at Mizzou After going 2-1 last weekend, Wayne and Susan Kreklow are now just one win shy of 300 since taking over at Mizzou in The duo has averaged 21 wins per season since taking over and has taken the team to 11 NCAA Tournaments while winning their first NCAA Division I league championship a year ago. Tigers Lead SEC in Hitting Last season, Mizzou led the nation in hitting with its.356 attack percentage and while the Tigers don t boast an attack clip that high this season, they still lead the SEC with their.276 clip, just ahead of Florida at.267. A big reason for that is that senior All-American Whitney Little ranks second in the league with her.511 attack percentage. Meister Cracks All-Time Top-10 in Digs Senior libero Sarah Meister pulled in a team-high 38 digs in three matches at North Texas last weekend. Those 38 digs cracked the Mizzou all-time top-10 in career digs as she now has 1,092, just 11 back of eighth place on the career list. Whit Resetting School Records Heading into the weekend, senior All-American Whitney Little currently holds seven school records, which coincidentally is a school record as well. She is a two-time All-SEC honoree and was an AVCA Honorable Mention All-American last season. Below is a look at the records that Little holds. - Single season blocks in Single season solo blocks - 42 in Single season hitting percentage in Career hitting percentage Career blocks per set Career 10-block matches Single match hitting percentage (rally scoring) Just a Little More Even with seven school records, Whitney Little is closing in on three more records and she should get all three this season. She needs just 32 total blocks to take over the career blocking record at Mizzou (currently 454 by Christi Myers from ). Little has 422 in her career. She also needs just 21 solo blocks to match the all-time career school record (currently 117 by Shannon Brown from ). Little has 96 heading into the weekend. She also needs just 50 block assists to top that career category (currently 376 by Nicole Wilson from ). Little has 326 heading into the weekend. Kan Emerges as Top Swing Last weekend at North Texas, sophomore All-American Carly Kan emerged as the Tigers top swing with 93 total attempts. She led the team with 36 kills over the three matches and turned in a pair of 15-kill matches to round out the weekend. In the last two matches of the weekend against Northwestern State and North Texas, Kan combined for 81 attempts with 34 and 47, respectively. To put that mark in perspective, Kan had 34 or more swings in just three matches in 2013 and more than 47 just once (50 at LSU when she tallied a career-high 24 kills). With the departure of three-year All-American Lisa Henning, it is clear after one weekend that Kan is the Tigers go-to hitter. Thater s Gonna Hate Sophomore middle blocker Emily Thater, who missed a lot of training camp with a back injury, looked in midseason form in her first start of the season at North Texas to close last weekend s invitational. In fact, she reset career-highs in kills (11), blocks (eight) and attempts (21), helping Mizzou to a five-set road win. Wilson Second in SEC Among Active Kill Leaders Heading into the weekend, senior Emily Wilson has compiled 793 kills in her career. That mark is tops among Tiger attackers and is second in the SEC, trailing only Kentucky s Lauren O Conner (853). Whitney Little is fifth on that list with her 718 career kills and Carly Kan is 17th with 419. Keala Tallies First Career Double-Double Sophomore setter Loxley Keala tallied her first career double-double in Mizzou s five-set win at North Texas last Saturday. She spread 22 assists and pulled in 10 digs. T OP I NDIVIDUAL P ERFORMANCES Kills Digs Blocks Kan vs NWS (8/30) 22...Meister at UNT (8/30) 8... In fact, the trio has combined for a record in three-plus seasons and has qualified for a pair of NCAA Tournaments, winning the SEC last season. In fact, the trio has missed a combined three matches in their time at Mizzou while they have compiled 224 starts. Whitney Little has started and played in all but one match in her career (last year she missed the match at Kentucky with a leg injury). Steady At Libero Another steady presence in the Tiger starting lineup for the last two seasons has been senior Sarah Meister at the libero spot. In fact, she has started the last 63 matches at libero and has played in 102 of 104 possible matches in her career. The only Tiger in program history to start more consecutive matches at libero was Caitlyn Vann (now an assistant coach at DePaul) who started 95 in a row from Should the Tigers advance to the postseason with Meister at libero in every match, she could pass Vann for that record. Preseason SEC Poll Mizzou was picked to finish third in what figures to be a loaded SEC this season, as voted on by the league s 13 head coaches. Mizzou garnered one first place vote and finished with 114 total points in the annual poll. This is the highest that Mizzou volleyball has been selected in a Preseason SEC poll and it is the highest for the program since 2005 when the team was picked to finish second in the Big 12. All-SEC Tigers For the third consecutive season, the Mizzou volleyball team had two players named to the Preseason All-Southeastern Conference team as both senior middle blocker Whitney Little and sophomore outside hitter Carly Kan were named to the nine-member team on Aug. 12. Both Little and Kan are coming off of monster seasons in which both earned American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Honorable Mention All-America honors. USA! USA! USA! Four Tigers played with the USA Volleyball Collegiate National Team last summer. Carly Kan toured China with one of the teams and was one of the top attackers for her team. Both seniors Emily Wilson and Whitney Little toured Europe and Sarah Meister trained in Minnesota with the Collegiate National Team. Home Sweet Hearnes Last season continued a trend of fan support that has increased almost every year since Wayne and Susan Kreklow took over the program in In fact, Mizzou welcomed a program-record 62,717 into the Hearnes Center last season, the third-best total in the nation. That mark trailed only Nebraska and Hawaii, who have long been the top attended programs nationally. In all, Mizzou averaged 3,301 fans per match last season, ranking sixth nationally. The team also reset the program record when 7,879 fans watched Mizzou sweep Mississippi State for the school s first ever SEC Championship. Tigers on TV Defending SEC Champion Mizzou volleyball will be televised a league-high 10 times on the SEC Network this season, as announced by the Southeastern Conference and ESPN on May 14. Mizzou will first appear on the SEC Network on Sept. 28 against Tennessee in a noon start at the Hearnes Center. The SEC Network will begin its inaugural season in the fall. Hawaiian Connection As Mizzou volleyball takes the court this season, there will be something that a lot of Tiger fans have not seen as two Hawaii natives will don the Black & Gold as both Carly Kan and Loxley Keala call the Rainbow State their home. The sophomore duo calls Honolulu home and played on rival high schools growing up. As a hot bed for volleyball talent, both Kan and Keala bring extensive beach play to Mizzou and great all-around games. They are the first Hawaii natives to play for Mizzou volleyball. The two were beach partners their senior year. Mizzou Adds Dawei Shen as Volunteer Assistant Mizzou volleyball head coach Wayne Kreklow has announced the addition of 11-year coaching veteran Dawei Shen as the program s new volunteer assistant coach. Shen joins the Tigers for the season after a standout career as both a player and a coach in China. As a coach, Shen built up an impressive résumé on the club scene in China and developed into one of the most well-respected coaches in the country. He served as an assistant coach to former US Women s National Team head coach Lang Ping and the two won a national Championship with EVERGRANDE Volleyball Club. He also led the China Sichuan Men s Volleyball club to a National Championship as an assistant coach. Kreklows Are Second-Longest Tenured Women s Coaches at Mizzou Now entering their 15th overall season at Mizzou, Wayne and Susan Kreklow are the second-longest tenured women s coaches at Mizzou and the fourth-longest overall. Only Mizzou soccer s Bryan Blitz has had a longer current tenure as a women s coach at Mizzou and only baseball coach Tim Jamieson, Blitz and wrestling coach Brian Smith have been at Mizzou longer among current Mizzou head coaches. The Kreklows have overseen the longest run by any coach in Mizzou volleyball history. HONOR-ROLL Whitney Little - Preseason All-SEC - UNT All-Tournament Team Carly Kan - Preseason All-SEC Weekly Conference Honors Trend Since the start of the 2009 season, a trend has started for the Mizzou volleyball program. In the last fourplus seasons, Mizzou has claimed 37 conference weekly honors, including 11 SEC tallies. What makes that mark even more impressive is the fact that from , Mizzou had just 17 weekly honorees. 11 WAYNE & SUSAN KREKLOW Mizzou volleyball s rise to national prominence since 2000 can be easily tied to its leadership at the helm of the program as Wayne and Susan Kreklow have built a national power. Heading into the 2013 season, the résumé was impressive enough: 10 NCAA Tournaments, one Elite Eight, two Sweet 16s, 12 winning seasons and an average of 20 wins per season. Not only did the Tigers become the first ever team at Mizzou to win a Southeastern Conference Championship and the program s first conference championship, but the team finished the regular season unblemished at The team earned the No. 4 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament and saw four players earn AVCA All-America honors, including a pair of first team honorees in senior setter Molly Kreklow and senior right side Lisa Henning. Wayne Kreklow was named SEC Coach of the Year for engineering the whole thing. Below is just a snapshot of the achievements by the 2013 team. SEC Champions School s first ever SEC title and program s first ever league championship First ever SEC team to finish a regular season unbeaten Reset school records in wins, conference wins, consecutive wins, sweeps and team hitting percentage Led the nation in hitting, kills, assists, wins and points per set while averaging the fewest errors per set Saw four players Molly Kreklow, Lisa Henning, Carly Kan, Whitney Little - land on the All-SEC team Molly Kreklow was named SEC Player of the Year, Carly Kan was SEC Freshman of the Year and Wayne Kreklow was SEC coach of the Year Four Tigers were AVCA All-Americans Molly Kreklow and Lisa Henning (First Team) and Carly Kan and Whitney Little (honorable mention) Wayne Kreklow was the SEC Coach of the Year and the AVCA Southeast Region Coach of the Year Carly Kan earned AVCA Southeast Region Freshman of the Year Aside from all of the accomplishments for the 2013 team, Wayne and Susan Kreklow had built a power at Mizzou since arriving in In fact, now that the Tigers have reached the NCAA Tournament in 11 of the last 14 seasons, Mizzou is one of only 22 teams nationally to qualify for at least 10 NCAA Tournaments in the last 14 seasons. In the Kreklow s first eight seasons at the helm of the program, Mizzou qualified for the NCAA Tournament in each year, joining Nebraska as the only two programs to accomplish that feat during the span. In their inaugural season as an SEC member, Wayne and Susan Kreklow guided Mizzou to a 19-win season while finishing fourth in the SEC East division. They also guided three players - Molly Kreklow, Lisa Henning and Whitney Little - to All-SEC honors. Henning was a unanimous All-SEC First Team pick while Kreklow and Little were second-team honorees. Henning also went on to garner AVCA All-America Third Team honors, becoming the second Tiger to earn AVCA All-America honors in two consecutive seasons. The 2011 season may have showcased the Kreklow s coaching prowess unlike ever before. With just two seniors on the 2011 squad, the Kreklows took a group comprised primarily of freshmen and sophomores to the NCAA Tournament for the 10th time in 12 seasons. In fact, the Tigers were the youngest team to qualify for the field of 64 as 11 of its 13 players were underclassmen. The Kreklows also guided Henning to AVCA Third Team All-America honors, becoming the first Tiger underclassman to earn AVCA All-America honors. In 2010, the Kreklows took the Tigers back to the NCAA Sweet 16, marking the program s second-deepest run into the NCAA Tournament in history. The Tigers also pulled the biggest first-round upset in NCAA Tournament history in 2010, knocking off fifth-seeded Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls in a thrilling five-set match. The Tigers boasted four wins over ranked teams in 2010, including two in the NCAA Tournament, and took home 14 Big 12 Athlete of the Week honors, the most by any team in the league in The Tigers also ranked 16th nationally in average attendance last season. Under the Kreklow s guidance in 2010, senior outside hitter Paola Ampudia was named honorable mention All-American by the AVCA was a member of the first team All-Central Region and All-Big 12 teams. She was a unanimous selection to the All-Big 12 team. The Kreklows also saw freshman setter Molly Kreklow garner AVCA Central Region Freshman of the Year honors and honorable mention All-Big 12 status as well. She and classmate Lisa Henning also appeared on the All-Big 12 Freshman team. The idea of developing a family-like atmosphere has always been a key component of the Kreklow s coaching style. That rang true again in 2010 as Molly Kreklow, their niece, was the team s starting setter. Not only that, but the Kreklows have teamed with current assistant coach Deng Yang for all 11 years at Mizzou and she played for Wayne and Susan during their time at Columbia College. Also, the Kreklows have added one of their former Mizzou players to their coaching staff in former All-American setter Lindsey Hunter, now in her second season. In 2009, the Kreklows guided a group of talented underclassmen to an overall record, likely just one win shy of qualifying the program for its ninth NCAA Tournament in the decade. Under the tutelage of the Kreklows, Ampudia earned a spot on the All-Big 12 First Team and was dubbed the conference Newcomer of the Year as she thrived in the Kreklow s system. She anchored what was one of the league s most explosive attacks in Under the direction of the Kreklow s, academics and community involvement continue to be a cornerstone of the program. In 2009, six Tigers earned a spot on the Academic All-Big 12 team while senior setter Lei Wang-Francisco became the program s first-ever four-time Academic All-Big 12 honoree. The volleyball program also spends countless hours in the community. In 2009, the team baked holiday cookies for the elderly, visited children s hospitals and raised more than $1,000 for the American Red Cross and the Haitain Earthquake Relief Fund. Year in and year out, the volleyball program challenges for Mizzou s Tiger Cup, which is given to the Mizzou athletic program that is most involved in its community. The Kreklow s guided the volleyball team to a Tiger Cup Championship in 2009, despite having one of the smallest rosters across the board. 12 While the Kreklow s success at Missouri was immediate, the apex of their successes came at the end of the 2005 season. The Tigers were selected to host NCAA First and Second rounds for the second-consecutive year, achieving an overall No. 10 seed in the tournament. After defeating Missouri State in the first round, Mizzou swept Arkansas to advance to the team s first regional in school history. At the Penn State Regional, the Tigers took perennial power Hawaii head-on in the regional semifinal, defeating UH in four games. The Tigers accumulated a 25-5 record in 2005, the winningest season in school history, and were a step away from the Final Four. Also in 2005, Wayne Kreklow was named College Volleyball Update s honorable mention National Coach of the Year as the team surged to the national top-10 for the first time in school history, sweeping three top-10 teams along the way. In all, the Kreklows have amassed a (.649) winning record in their Mizzou tenure with 117 wins coming in Big 12 play, averaging 12 conference wins per season. The Tigers have won 21 matches over Top-25 teams since 2000, toppling five during the magical 2005 season. Mizzou itself has spent 76 weeks in the national top 25 since Upon arrival, the Kreklows wasted no time in putting their winning mark on a program that had not experienced success since the early 1980 s. In their first three years at Mizzou (2000, 2001 and 2002) they recorded the program s first back-to-back-to-back 20-win seasons since In fact, the Tigers won 70 matches in the first three years under the Kreklows, more than the previous seven years combined. Missouri posted the first postseason victory in school history by defeating Northwestern in the first round of the 2002 NCAA Tournament. In 2004, Missouri had the honor of hosting first and second rounds of the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history. In 2000, the Kreklows first season at MU, the Tigers finished second in the Big 12 Conference after finishing ninth the previous year. For her efforts, Susan was named as the 2000 Big 12 Coach of the Year by her peers. The Kreklows have made Mizzou Volleyball an exciting marketable entity, and the growth in attendance has been effected, as Missouri has ranked in the nation s top seven in the category in 2005 and 2006, averaging more than 2,600 fans per competition. On Oct. 5, 2005, 7,298 fans packed the Hearnes Center for the Tigers match against Nebraska. Both teams entered the contest undefeated and ranked in the national top-10. In 2005, Missouri s No. 21 preseason ranking was the season-low as the team never exited the top 25. The Tigers progressed in defeating two top-10 teams in sweeps to open the season and soon soared to the top 10 themselves, peaking at a now-team, all-time high No. 7 in October. Their No. 8 final poll ranking in 2005 is the best in school history. Before the 2005 season, Wayne and Susan officially switched titles within the University system to allow for more family flexibility. While the official coaching records of both are affected, their coaching philosophy is one built on a co-op instead of a one-headed system. The Cougars also won five regional championships and seven consecutive American Midwest Conference championships under their guidance. In 1998 and 1999, Columbia College achieved consecutive undefeated seasons with a combined record of The Cougars undefeated record included 78 consecutive wins at home and 227 consecutive game victories. In 1997 and 1998, the Kreklows shared NAIA/AVCA National Coach of the Year and Midwest Region Coach of the Year honors. In 1999, the coaching tandem took home the regional award for the fifth consecutive year. In 1998 and 1999, the Kreklows also received the NAIA National Tournament Coach of the Year award. Along with the success of the women s program, the Kreklows started the men s volleyball program at Columbia College in In 1999, the Cougars finished the season with a 19-5 overall record, enjoying their second consecutive undefeated run through the Midwest Intercollegiate Volleyball Association. They also took second place at the inaugural SSI Volleyball National Invitational Tournament in Susan Kreklow played volleyball for Central Missouri State University and Missouri State. She received her bachelor s degree in physical education and a Master s of Science degree from Missouri State in 1984 and 1987, respectively. Kreklow began her coaching career at St. Clair (Mo.) High School. She began her collegiate coaching career at Columbia College in Susan was the founder of Columbia Juniors Volleyball Club and the Columbia Developmental Volleyball Leagues. She has served as a member of the USA Volleyball Board of Directors as the NAIA representative and was president-elect of the NAIA National Coaches Association. Wayne Kreklow earned a bachelor s degree in social science in 1980 from Drake University. While at Drake, Wayne was a member of the men s basketball team, where he earned All-America, all-conference and all-district awards as a two-time team captain, and is fifth on Drake s career scoring list. He is also a member of Drake s All-Century basketball team and was a member of the NBA World Champion Boston Celtics in Wayne began coaching basketball for Central Decatur (Iowa) High School in He began coaching volleyball as an assistant under Craig Sherman at Missouri. He was with the Tigers from 1989 to 1994 before moving over to Columbia College to join his wife at the helm of the Cougar program. In the summer of 2006, Wayne coached his son Rick s AAU 14-and-under basketball team to a national championship. Rick is currently playing varsity basketball at Creighton.
