3 4 Missouri Valley Conference Media Information 5 The Missouri Valley Conference enters its 103rd year at the start of the academic year, and the nation s secondoldest NCAA Division I conference continues to be a leader in college athletics. The Valley continues to lead by example as one of college athletics most progressive conferences. The Valley emphasizes the importance of the student-athlete and is aggressive in its approach to provide opportunities for its member institutions. The Valley had another historic year in volleyball as three league teams earned bids into the NCAA Tournament field. In 2007, a conference record four teams were invited to the Big Dance, while only five times previously has the league received as many as two NCAA bids. Tournament champion Missouri State was joined by UNI and Wichita State in postseason play. Based in St. Louis since 1985, the league is assertive in its approach to hosting NCAA basketball championship events, operating a revenue-producing in-house television network, bidding out the right to host sport championships and landing title sponsorships for those events. The success of The Valley television package is one of the great stories in the league, in terms of the clearance of the men s basketball tournament title game on national broadcast television, the excellent national and regional coverage for basketball and other sports, and the effective sale of advertising content to more than 25 companies. The MVC Television Network has blossomed into a revenue-generating vehicle and The Valley s most visible marketing tool. During the tenure of Doug Elgin, The Valley s ninth and longest-tenured commissioner, The Valley has been aggressive in hosting NCAA events in St. Louis. This continuing involvement of the MVC in hosting NCAA events represents one of the most concentrated stretches of host opportunities for any university or conference in the 70-plus year history of the national championship tournament. In 2010, the Missouri Valley will host an NCAA men s basketball regional, while The Valley has hosted three Final Fours this decade (women s events in 2001 and 2009, and the Men s Final Four in 2005). The league had previously hosted men s regionals in 1998, 1999, 2004 and 2007; and a men s first/second round event in Additionally, Creighton and The Valley co-hosted a men s basketball first and second round in 2008 in Omaha. And while the Missouri Valley Conference has been progressive in pursuing NCAA events, it has continued to be a national leader in the athletic arena. And starting in , the conference broke new ground by allowing league members to bid for hosting rights for select team sport championships. By establishing uniform host criteria, the conference is able to assist a host institution in a season-long promotional campaign and provide an avenue where hosts can acquire sponsors and achieve a profit for the event. The season was a landmark season for the conference as State Farm Insurance and the league came to terms on an agreement that provides State Farm with title sponsorship of all of the league s 18 championships. The conference s progressive marketing and in-house television package has helped open doors to regional and national sponsors outside of the realm of title sponsorships, as the league s men s basketball tournament sponsorship revenues continues to reach all-time highs. Meanwhile, the league has been progressive in other areas, as it has taken its merchandise program in-house, while offering e-commerce solutions for league apparel, championship photography and a conference-wide videostreaming package. The seeds for this vision were planted by eight administrators representing five institutions, who met at the Midland Hotel in Kansas City, Mo., on Jan. 12, The five schools which formed the Missouri Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Association were Washington University of St. Louis, and the state universities of Iowa, Kansas, Missouri and Nebraska. Two months after the initial meeting, two more schools -- Drake University and Iowa State College -- were admitted. In the fall of 1907, basketball became the first competitive sport. Today, the Missouri Valley Conference sponsors the following sports: baseball, men s and women s basketball, men s and women s cross country and track & field (indoor and outdoor), men s and women s golf, men s and women s soccer, softball, women s swimming and diving, men s and women s tennis, and women s volleyball. This season, the league will conduct its 99th outdoor track and field championship, its 92nd tennis championship, its 56th baseball tournament, and its 72nd golf championship for the men. Those programs, plus other current sponsored sports of cross country (51 years), indoor track (43), soccer (19) and swimming and diving (16), have helped solidify the Missouri Valley Conference as one of the most respected conferences nationally. Indeed, the inclusion of women s programs under The Valley banner has provided a boost. The Gateway Collegiate Athletic Conference -- which began in merged with the Missouri Valley Conference and was unveiled as part of the new conference on July 1, And while the inclusion of women s sports under a comprehensive athletic umbrella is a recent development in the league s storied history, over the years, Valley studentathletes and coaches have become household names during the league s illustrious history, both during their collegiate careers and, for some, professional careers. In fact, The Valley began honoring that tradition in the summer of 1997, when the conference began its athletics Hall of Fame. Hersey Hawkins of Bradley, Larry Bird of Indiana State, Wes Unseld of Louisville, Coach Henry Iba of Oklahoma State, Dave Stallworth of Wichita State, Ed Macauley of Saint Louis, and Oscar Robertson of Cincinnati were members of the initial induction class. Currently, nearly 40 former players, coaches and alums dot the league s Hall of Fame. Men s basketball, perhaps, has the league s most storied tradition with the likes of Hall of Famers Bird and Robertson, but The Valley has also produced national-caliber studentathletes in its other sponsored sports. In 2001, Missouri State s Jackie Stiles became the first Valley woman to earn the Honda- Broderick Cup, given to the nation s top female collegiate student-athlete. In the sport of track and field, Indiana State s Holli Hyche captured seven national sprint titles in the early 1990s, Southern Illinois Darrin Plab won back-to-back NCAA outdoor high jump titles in 1991 and 1992, SIU s Brittany Riley became the World record holder in the weight throw in And Kylie Hutson of Indiana State swept both the indoor and outdoor pole vault titles in In the fall of 1997, Creighton s Johnny Torres was named the collegiate male soccer player of the year for a secondstraight year, while SMU s Luchi Gonzalez (2001) and Tulsa s Ryan Pore (2004) have also earned a National Player of the Year honor in men s soccer. Meanwhile league member Wichita State has produced three national collegiate players of the year in baseball, including Joe Carter (1981), Phil Stephenson (1982) and Darren Dreifort (1993). From its early beginning to its current standing on the map of college athletics, The Valley will always continue to be proactive in its approach. League members include Bradley, Creighton, Drake, Evansville, Illinois State, Indiana State, Missouri State, Northern Iowa, Southern Illinois, and Wichita State. 5 8 Head Coach Bobbi Petersen 9 Bobbi Petersen Head Coach 10th Year When thinking about the tradition-filled history of UNI volleyball, few names jump out like Bobbi Petersen s. A former standout on the court for UNI and arguably the greatest player in the school s history she has continued her connection with the Purple and Old Gold as both an assistant coach, and as head coach. Under her guidance, she has taken UNI volleyball from its usual standard of excellence to a tier with the nation s elite programs. Now in her 10th year as the Panthers head coach, Petersen has posted an impressive record at the helm of UNI s program, with three Missouri Valley Conference regular season titles, five MVC tournament crowns and two NCAA Sweet 16 appearances to her credit. She ranks in the top 10 of active Division I coaches in winning percentage (.765), with the Panthers winning 20 or more matches eight of her nine years as head coach. During her tenure as head coach, Petersen has helped 23 student-athletes earn first-team All-Missouri Valley Conference honors, including coaching three conference players of the year. She has also placed at least one student-athlete on the league s all-freshman team each of the past five years. In addition, she has helped four athletes earn AVCA All-District honors, with Molly O Brien earning third team AVCA All-America honors in Academically, the Panthers have shined under Petersen s guidance as well. A total of 19 players have earned first-team Missouri Valley Conference Scholar- Athlete honors during her time at the helm, with two players earning CoSIDA Academic All-America honors. The 2008 season was another banner one for the Panthers, as Petersen guided UNI to a 25-9 record, and its ninth NCAA tournament appearance in the past 11 years. For the first time ever, UNI earned an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament, after finishing as runner-up at the State Farm MVC Tournament. The Panthers also kept their streak alive of 20-match victory seasons, having now won at least 20 matches each of the past 11 seasons. Seniors Amy Sampson and Ashten Stelken earned first-team All-Missouri Valley Conference honors, with Stelken being named honorable mention AVCA All-District. The Panthers claimed the 2007 State Farm MVC Tournament title in 2007, their fifth under Petersen. Two UNI players, Ashten Stelken and Kristin Belzung, earned first-team All-MVC honors, while Danielle Brazda and Laura Rowen were second-team all-league picks. Freshman libero Ellie Blankenship was an MVC allfreshman team selection, as she set a Panthers singleseason record for digs. Shannon Aschoff was named the 2007 State Farm MVC Tournament MVP, helping lead the Panthers to their second straight tournament title. After putting together another of it s patented winning streaks the Panthers won 19 of 20 matches at one point UNI defeated Winthrop in the first round of the NCAA tournament, marking the sixth straight time the Panthers had won at least their first-round NCAA match. UNI s season ended with a loss at top-ranked and eventual national champion Nebraska. The 2006 season was not the first time Petersen had been honored with coaching accolades by her peers. She was named the AVCA National Coach of the Year in 2002, along with earning her second consecutive AVCA Central Region Coach of the Year award, after leading the Panthers to a 34-3 mark and a top four national seed in the NCAA tournament. Injuries and inexperience did not stop the 2005 Panthers from posting their eighth straight season of 20 or more wins. Three players expected to be key contributors each saw time on the sideline due to various ailments. However, with just one senior on the roster, UNI continued to grow and mature with each match. The Panthers also posted wins against a pair of NCAA tournament teams. In 2004, with a young squad, Petersen guided UNI to its seventh consecutive season of 20+ victories, and a second-place tie in the Missouri Valley Conference standings. Playing its usual rigorous schedule, Petersen saw UNI post a season-best nine-match winning streak midway through the season, which marked the 12th consecutive season that Panther volleyball has won at least nine matches in a row during the season. Petersen led UNI to its sixth consecutive MVC championship in 2003, as the Panthers defeated Missouri State on the Bears home court to win the title. UNI finished with a 28-6 record and was ranked as high as sixth in the nation during the 2003 campaign. The Panthers advanced to the NCAA tournament s second round, dropping a close decision at eventual Final Four participant Minnesota. Petersen took the Panthers to new heights in 2002 as they were ranked sixth in the nation the highest ranking in school history while entering into the NCAA Tournament as the number four seed. Along the way, UNI faced some of the toughest teams in the country, including Stanford, the defending national champion in the first match of the season. The Panthers came up big with wins over #3 Florida, #7 UCLA, #8 Pepperdine, #20 Minnesota and #20 Missouri. In 2001, Petersen led UNI to a 31-2 mark, as the Panthers knocked off third-ranked Wisconsin, #19 Notre Dame and downed Minnesota in an epic five-game marathon in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The Panthers eventually fell to #1 Long Beach State in the NCAA regional semi-finals. She also became the first person in conference history to win a league championship as a player (1986 and 87) and head coach when UNI beat Missouri State in the 2001 Valley Tournament final and Southern Illinois in As a player at UNI from , the former Bobbi Becker was a three-time first team all-conference selection and two-time first team all-region pick. Although it has been more than 15 years since she last donned a Panther uniform, her name still appears on UNI s top 10 lists in numerous statistical categories. Her 40 kills in a 1989 match against Illinois State not only is tops in UNI history, but also stands as the all-time Missouri Valley/Gateway Conference record. A native of Dike, Iowa, Petersen compiled 1,611 career kills and 1,457 digs during her career. In 1992, she was voted UNI s Gateway Conference Volleyball Athlete of the Decade. In 2006, she was further honored by being voted to the Missouri Valley Conference All-Centennial volleyball team. A former standout as a Panther player, Petersen replaced the legendary Iradge Ahrabi-Fard as head coach when he retired in It marked the second time she had replaced Ahrabi-Fard; she served as interim head coach in 1997, going 18-9 while he was serving as a consultant to USA Volleyball. Petersen spent six seasons as a Panther assistant prior to her appointment as permanent head coach. In that capacity, she was responsible for nearly all aspects of the Panther program, including recruiting, camps, scheduling, fund-raising and scouting. Petersen earned her bachelor s degree in therapeutic recreation in 1990 and her master s from UNI in physical education in She served as a graduate assistant with the Panthers in 1990 and, after completing her master s, was employed as a therapeutic recreation specialist in Fort Smith, Ark., and Fort Dodge, Iowa. 8 14 Outlook Roster 15 The University of Northern Iowa volleyball team enters the 2009 season with three straight NCAA Tournament berths, four starters and the libero from the team that finished 25-9 in 2008 and the experience of playing a European tour this summer. Despite that experience, head coach Bobbi Petersen feels there are still questions that need to be answered. After losing four-year starters and first-team all-conference players Ashten Stelken and Amy Sampson, UNI will look to its young roster to fill the holes at middle blocker and hitter positions. The Panthers only have one senior on its roster, preseason all-conference selection Shannon Aschoff, four juniors, and the rest of the team is comprised of underclassmen, including two redshirt and five true freshmen. We have some young kids that are anxious to get in there and compete for positions on the court and are ready to prove they have what it takes to be there, Petersen said. We re anxious to get some of the young players on the court and see how they respond. UNI got a bit of a preview when the Panthers competed in five matches in Europe in May. Going overseas was a great opportunity for some of our younger kids to compete in an atmosphere that was better than normal spring ball and practice, Petersen said. It was also a great opportunity to bond together and learn a lot about each other. UNI will certainly have history on its side as it vies for a successful season. The 2008 team earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament, marking the third straight trip and the ninth trip in the last 11 seasons. The Panthers are also looking to extend a streak of 11 straight seasons with 20 or more wins. UNI has reached the 20-victory mark 22 times in the last 24 seasons. I like the group we have returning, and the core group that was on the court, Petersen said. This team has worked very hard this spring and summer, and we re ready to transfer that hard work into the fall season. Middle Blockers The middle blocker position will be one area where the Panthers show their youth. After losing four-year starter and two-time all-conference player Ashten Stelken, sophomore Michelle Burow is the most experienced player at the position. Burrow started all 34 matches for the Panthers as a freshman. She ranked second on the team with.96 blocks per set, and she was fourth on the team with 1.56 kills per set. She also posted a.297 hitting percentage, and her efforts earned her a place on the Missouri Valley Conference all-freshman team. Michelle had a great spring both physically and technically, said Petersen. She has continued to get stronger and improve her skill level. She is one of the fastest middles we have had, and she has great knowledge of the game, allowing her to be very successful. We are excited to see how she handles the role of leading our middle group. The remainder of the blocking corps will be comprised of redshirt freshman Krista DeGeest and true freshman Shelby Kintzel. Krista got a lot of great experience this spring. She continues to make improvements in both physical abilities as well as her technical and mental sides of the game, Petersen said. She is a big block and has worked hard to improve her offensive options and decision making. We are anxious to see how Krista responds to match play this fall. We re looking for her to step up and take control of the M2 position. Even though it is very difficult to come in as a middle, Shelby could be seeing playing time as a freshman, Petersen said. She has a big presence at the net, and we are excited to get her here and teach her our system. Depending on her learning curve and how she adapts to the pace of the game, she could see time on the court. Pin Hitters The Panthers return a pair of veteran players in the pinhitter position in senior Shannon Aschoff and junior Beth Discher. Both starters from last season, Aschoff and Discher will become go-to players after the loss of Stelken and Sampson. Aschoff earned second-team all-valley honors in 2008, averaging 3.02 kills and 2.46 digs per set as a junior. As the team s only senior and one of the team s captains, Petersen expects Aschoff to also serve in a leadership role for UNI. Shannon is one of the most versatile pins we have. She is not just a great attacker, but she also puts up one of the best blocks on the team. She also has played some back court for us, so we will need that experience as well, Petersen said. She is one of our most seasoned players, so we will rely on her for many things, both on and off the court this season. We are really looking for her to have an awesome season in many different ways. Discher took over a starting position in 2008, starting all 34 matches as a sophomore. She averaged 1.46 kills and.65 blocks per game that season, and Petersen expects her to be a key component to the Panthers success this season. We look for her to step up and have a bigger role this season. She had a great spring, and she has the potential to become one of those players that opponents cannot stop, Petersen said. She is huge at the net, both as an attacker and a blocker, and she has made great improvements on the technical and mental sides of the game. Her shot selection and decision making made huge strides in the spring, and we look for Beth to have a breakout season. She should be someone opponents need to worry about. Junior Kali Karsten returns after missing 2008 with and ACL tear. Kali has worked hard to get herself back, and she is excited about fighting for an opportunity to get on the court, Petersen said. She is one of the most naturally gifted student athletes on our team, and she continues to improve on the technical and mental aspects of the game, making up for the time lost in the spring. Petersen also expects redshirt freshman Megan Lehman to vie for playing time this season. Megan is a big pin who can provide a tough block as well as an offensive option, Petersen said. She will continue to learn about the game at this level, which will allow her to continue to improve as an all-around payer. The Panthers will also bring in a pair of true freshman, Amy Braun and Macy Ubben, to round out the pin position. Braun, who was also recruited by some schools to play as a libero, could see playing time right away. Amy will come in as one of the most well-rounded players we will have. She has played a high level of club and can play at a high level in both the front and back court. She can hit anywhere on the net and has an advanced development of shots for her age, which will help her offensively, Petersen said. We are excited to see how Amy adapts to the game at this level, and we expect her to fight for time on the court. Ubben enters as a four-sport athlete who will be focusing on volleyball for the first time. Macy hasn t spent a lot of time in training for volleyball, Petersen said. We are anxious to train her and see where her potential can go. She is a huge block and can swing effectively from both the left and right side. Depending on her learning curve, she may find some court time this fall as well. Setters Sophomore Bre Payton returns after starting 25 games as a setter in She led the Panthers with 9.79 assists per set, and Petersen feels she has made big strides after serving as UNI s lone setter in the spring. Bre had an opportunity to get a lot of experience and training this spring, Petersen said. She improved her set location, decision making and the mental side of running an offense. As a lefty, she is very dangerous as an offensive attacker. She will keep the defense on its toes as she has improved hitting all areas of the court with her swings and tips. She should be a lot of fun to watch this season. Along with Payton, the Panthers will bring in true freshman Molly Turk. Molly will be ready to challenge for the setting position, Petersen said. She is extremely athletic, and besides having what it takes to make a great setter, she plays strong defense. We are looking forward to getting her here and teaching her our system. We re positive that with her physical abilities, work ethic and attitude, she will blossom as a competitive setter. Defensive Specialists Petersen believes defense will be one of the Panthers strengths in The Panthers return second-team all-conference libero Ellie Blankenship. The junior s 5.59 digs per set ranked among the national leaders. She will also act as a leader on the floor, serving as a team captain. Ellie has strong reading abilities, great defensive attitude, amazing reaction time and is one of the most competitive players on our team, Petersen said. We are looking for Ellie to improve not only her leadership in the back court, but for the team as a whole as a co-captain. She will be asked to take control of defense and passing patterns during competition. She is an exciting player to watch, and we are expecting her to be a key to the success of this year s team. Junior Chelsea Saunders also returns to the Panther backcourt. Saunders played in all 34 matches for the Panthers as a sophomore, tallying 2.23 digs per set. Chelsea saw significant playing time last season and has grown a lot as a contributor for our team, Petersen said. She can play any position in the back court, which will help with the versatility of our defensive scheme. Chelsea has developed a tough jump float serve that could score a significant amount of points this season. Redshirt freshman Candice Burke and true freshman Jenny Willms join the Panther backcourt. Candice has learned a lot about the pace of the game at this level during her redshirt year and really had some good matches in our overseas trip, Petersen said. She is very quick on the court and continues to improve her technique allowing her to do well in all of the backcourt positions. Jenny will add some depth to our backcourt, Petersen said. She was a setter for most of her high school years, but she has really developed as a defensive specialist. She will be exceptionally good at the right side, which is an area where we have needed improvement. We are looking forward to seeing how Jenny adapts to the college game, and we expect her to challenge for time on the court. Schedule The Panthers will become road-tested early on, playing away from the McLeod Center in six of the first seven weekends of the season. UNI opens the season in College Station, Texas, competing against Texas A&M, Virginia and Iona in the Texas A&M Invitational. The Panthers host Iowa State on Sept. 2 in the home opener, and then head to the Middle Tennessee Blue Raider Bash, taking on MTSU, Northern Illinois and Ohio. Following a mid-week home matchup with Western Illinois, UNI will compete in the Bowling Green Tournament, facing Robert Morris and UW- Green Bay along with the host team. The Panthers, who were picked to finish third in Missouri Valley Conference by the league s coaches, open league play at Drake on Sept. 18. We start out with a tough preseason schedule to prepare us for the conference season, Petersen said. Conference will be an absolute battle with many teams returning a great number of starters. Not only will it be a battle for the top spot, but it also looks to be the strongest year we ve had from top to bottom. It will be a tough conference race, and even though we weren t picked to win it, that is our goal, and that is what we will be fighting to do. Our kids and coaches believe we can do it, and this type of conference race is what makes the season exciting. The Panthers earned an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament, falling to Iowa State, 3-1, in the first round in Minneapolis, Minn. Last year was UNI s first-ever at-large bid to the NCAA tournament. In each of the previous 13 times the Panthers have advanced to postseason play, they won the Missouri Valley Conference postseason tournament, earning the league s automatic bid. UNI lost to Missouri State in the conference tournament final in 2008, but was still one of three teams from The Valley to make the NCAA field, joining MSU and Wichita State. Since making its first NCAA tournament appearance in 1986, the Panthers have failed to make the NCAA tournament field just nine times. Three of those years UNI was selected to play in the now defunct National Invitational Volleyball Classic (NIVC), meaning that only six times in the last 23 years have the Panthers failed to make some sort of postseason play marked the 11th straight year that the Panthers have won at least 20 matches, with UNI having claimed at least 20 victories in 22 of the past 24 seasons. Five of those seasons, the Panthers have won 30 or more matches, including three times in the last 10 years (1999, 2001 and 2002) As a team, UNI ranked in the top 30 nationally in a pair of statistical categories. The Panthers were 17th in blocks per set (2.65) and 28th in digs per set (16.58). Individually, senior middle blocker Ashten Stelken was ninth in the nation in blocks per set at 1.45, while sophomore libero Ellie Blankenship ranked seventh nationally in digs per set at Amy Sampson and Ashten Stelken, with 27 and 22 kills, respectively, against Creighton Nov. 28, became the first UNI teammates to each have 20 or more kills in the same match since Stelken (22) and Laura Rowen (20) did it on Oct. 6, 2007 against Illinois State. Sophomore libero Ellie Blankenship, who set UNI records for digs and digs per set as a freshman, broke both those marks in 2008, ending with 676 digs and 5.59 digs per set. She ranked seventh nationally in digs per set. Blankenship had a career-high 38 digs against Illinois State Oct. 24, and has reached double-digits in digs in 33 of 34 matches this year. She reached double-figures in digs in her first 18 matches this season, and had her string of 51 straight matches of at least 10 digs snapped against Bradley Oct. 11. That match against Bradley (when she got seven digs in the 3-0 sweep of the Braves) is the only time in two seasons that she has not gotten at least 10 digs. Blankenship s 51-match streak stands as the 12thbest streak in NCAA history. Aschoff Payton. Senior outside hitter Amy Sampson and senior middle blocker Ashten Stelken were each named 2008 first-team All-Missouri Valley Conference, in voting by the league s head coaches. Junior outside hitter Shannon Aschoff and sophomore libero Ellie Blankenship were named second-team All-MVC, while setter Bre Payton and middle blocker Michelle Burow were named to the Missouri Valley Conference all-freshman team. Ashten Stelken and Amy Sampson were named to the 2008 State Farm Missouri Valley Conference All-Tournament Team. Sampson averaged 4.50 kills per set over UNI s three matches, while hitting.265, including recording a career-high 27 kills in the semifinal win over Creighton. Stelken averaged 4.17 kills and 1.08 blocks per set, while hitting.369, over the three matches, tying her career best with 22 kills against Creighton. Senior middle blocker Ashten Stelken was honored by being named to the 2008 Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete First Team. Stelken, who was also a first-team MVC scholar-athlete in 2007, holds a 3.40 grade point average in elementary education. UNI had a season-high 117 digs in its 3-2 loss to Wichita State Oct. 17. That was the most digs the Panthers have ever had in a rally-scoring match (which was implemented in 2001). The total was just short of the overall school record of 125 digs, set on Sept. 1, 1987, against Washington State. With the 3-1 victory against Drake Sept. 19, UNI extended its streak of winning its conference opener to 23 straight seasons. The last time the Panthers dropped their opening conference match was on Oct. 18, 1985 when Southern Illinois posted a 3-2 win over UNI (15-11, 14-16, 14-16, 15-5, 15-13). That was also the last time SIU defeated UNI in Cedar Falls. UNI won its first five matches of 2008 by perfect 3-0 sweeps, and won the first set against Clemson Sept. 6, for a string of 16 set victories to start the year. That is the most sets won in a row to start the season by UNI since the 1986 campaign, when the Panthers won their first 25 sets of the year. Sampson Blankenship Burow

20 38 Director of Athletics Head Coaches 39 Troy Dannen UNI Director of Athletics Troy Dannen was named the University of Northern Iowa s Director of Athletics on May 29, He became the school s fifth director of athletics since UNI turned Division I in When he rejoined the Panther family in 2009, it was a homecoming for Dannen, who attended UNI as an undergraduate in the 1980s. He maintained close ties to the school during his nearly 20 years away from the University, and his passion and drive for the Purple and Gold was a key reason he chose to come back and guide the department. His vision for UNI is to use the passion he has for Panther athletics, and wave the flag like never before. Not only by helping to continue the outstanding academic and athletic success that UNI teams have had in recent years, but also to expand the Panthers reach throughout the state. Dannen believes that Panther athletic department should value excellence in all endeavors, with its primary objective being personal development and growth of its student-athletes. Dannen believes in achieving that objective by focusing on the core educational mission of the University and ensuring the department acts with integrity and in a fiscally responsible manner. Through this, Panther athletics can continue to thrive, and achieve greater levels of success both on and off the field of play. The road map for that action plan starts with having a passion for UNI, and bringing it to the table each day. Then, focusing that passion into a work ethic and drive to make UNI the best place it can be. This past year, Dannen s first, UNI finished fifth in the Missouri Valley Conference s all-sports standings, marking the third straight year the Panthers have posted an upper-division finish. UNI captured conference championships in football, men s basketball, and men s indoor and outdoor track and field, while wrestling won the West Regional. Teams or individuals in eight sports advanced to NCAA postseason play. Dannen originated the idea for the first Rally in the Valley dinner auction, which raised more than $100,000 for UNI athletics. He has initiated a grass-roots campaign to increase membership in the Panther Scholarship Club, especially in the state capital of Des Moines. Dannen also spearheaded the athletic department s drive to fund-raise to replace the aging turf in the UNI-Dome. He has overseen the construction of new administrative offices and a student-athlete academic center, as well as the building of suites in both the UNI-Dome and McLeod Center. In addition to success on the field of play, Dannen continues to make academic success a priority as well.
