1 St. Petersburg Open With no country quota playoff matches scheduled for women, there will be six days of competition for the US$400,000 St. Petersburg Open, the 12th of 13 double gender events this season on the SWATCH- FIVB World Tour. The third annual St. Petersburg Open at the Peter-and-Paul Fortress oficialy starts Tuesday (August 28) and concludes Saturday (September 1) for women and Sunday (September 2) for men with the winning teams in each gender sharing the $32,000 first-place prizes. The St. Petersburg Open is the15th SWATCH-FIVB World Tour stop in 2007 for both men and women. When Peter the Great re-claimed the lands along the Neva River in 1703, he decided to build a fort to protect the area. The Peter-and-Paul Fortress was founded on a small island in the Neva delta on May 27, 1703 (May 16 according to the old calendar) and that day became the birthday of the city of St Petersburg. In the middle of the fortress stands the impressive Peter and Paul Cathedral, the burial place of all the Russian Emperors and Empresses from Peter the Great to Alexander III. The Cathedral was the first church in the city to be built of stone (between ) One day of qualification for each gender will be staged (Tuesday for women and Wednesday for men). The qualifiers will determine the final eight berths in each gender s Main Draw where a doubleelimination format wil be used to determine the final four teams. The women s semi-finals will be played Friday and the medal matches wil be played Saturday. The men s final four matches will be Saturday afternoon will the medal matches Sunday. A total of 75 men s and 58 women s teams from 40 countries have entered the St. Petersburg Open, including Angola, Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belarus, Belgium, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, Cuba, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Georgia, Great Britain, Greece, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Mexico, Moldova, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Philippines, Poland, Portugal, Russia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the Ukraine, the United States and Venezuela. The St. Petersburg Open is the 164th women s and the 206th men s SWATCH-FIVB World Tour Beach Voleybal events (open, grand slam, Olympic and Goodwil). The first men s SWATCH-FIVB World Tour event was played February 17-22, 1987 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The first women s SWATCH-FIVB World Tour event was played August 14-16, 1992 at Almeria, Spain. With the qualifying concluding July 20, 2008 to determine the 24 teams per gender for the Summer Games, a team s best eight finishes on the SWATCH-FIVB World Tour or sanctioned continental championships will count during the process. Following the St. Petersburg Open, the SWATCH-FIVB World Tour ends its European schedule with a men s only in Mazury region of Polandat Stare Jablonki. The final double gender event will be staged at the end of September in Brazil with single gender stops during the first week of November in Bali (men) and Thailand (women) ending the 2007 season. 2 St. Petersburg Open RUSSIA, MOSCOW & ST. PETERSBURG - Not counting the 1994 St. Petersburg event that was part of the Goodwill Games and featured only eight teams per gender, the best finishes by Russian teams as host country participants have been ninths in 2006 by men s and women s teams. The 1994 St. Petersburg stop had Russian pairs finishing seventh in each gender that year. The Russian men's teams of Roman Arkaev/Dmitri Barsouk and Yaroslav Koshkarev/Serguei Prokopiev finished ninth in the 2006 St. Petersburg Open after being eliminated by pairs from the Netherlands and Brazil, respectively. The Russian women's teams of Alexandra/Shiryaeva Natalya Uryadova were also ninth on the Peter-and-Paul Fortress sand after being ousted by a tandem from Germany. Julien Prosser is the only player to compete in al five men s events in Russiato date, but the Australian has retired from international competition REVISITED, Part 1 - Bjorn Maaseide, who captured the men s 1994 Goodwil Games gold medal with Jan Kvalheim for Norway, returns to St. Petersburg with current partner Iver Horrem. Brazilian Emanuel Rego is back in St. Petersburg for the fourth-time after placing fifth in the 1994 event with Aloizio Claudino. Emanuel and Ricardo Santos have placed first and fourth in the past two St. Petersburg Opens REVISITED, Part 1 - Although he was only eight at the times, Pedro Salgado and his sisters (Maria Clara and Carolina) were watching from home when their mother (Isabel) competed in the inaugural Goodwill Games competition in The mama placed fourth in the event with Roseli Timm for Brazil. The women s event in 1994 waswon by American s Karolyn Kirby and Liz Masakayan, who coaches Elaine Youngs and Nicole Branagh. Dmitri Barsouk and Igor Kolodinsky have colected four medals, seven final four finishes and $176,200 in earnings in 12 SWATCH stops this season to rank third overall in world tour points and on the qualifying list for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games behind two teams from Brazil. Prior to this season, the team of Olympians Sergey Ermishin and Mikhail Kouchnerev posted Russia s best SWATCH-FIVB World Tour finish with a bronze medal at the 2000 Canary Island event along with a 2001 Mallorca Open fourth. While Barsouk and Kolodinsky have earned $182,200 for 13 SWATCH stops starting with a 2006 event in Brazil, Ermishin and Kouchnerev compiled only $150,000 for 35 FIVB events together ( ). Russian men have also claimed a pair of FIVB Challenger/Satellite gold medals. Dmitry Areshkin and Edouard Senin captured the 1997 Bulgarian Challenger in Albena while Barsouk and Vladimir Kostioukov on the 2002 Lebanon Satellite in Beirut. Alexandra Shiryaeva and Natalya Uryadova posted the best finishes by a Russian women's team in a SWATCH stop with a fourth at the 2006 Poland Open in Warsaw and seventh at the 2005 Italian Open in Milan. Shiryaeva won the 2003 SWATCH-FIVB U21 World Championships with Anna Morozova in Saint Quay Portrieux, France. Playing in only nine events this season, Shiryaeva and Uryadova currently rank 32nd in SWATCH points and are 21st on Olympic qualifying list. The pair also won the 2006 European Championships in the Netherlands and placed fourth this year at event this past Saturday in Valencia, Spain. BAZOOKA - In his first full-season on the SWATCH-FIVB World Tour, Igor Kolodinsky has made a name for himself, especialy after being nicknamed Bazooka by Brazilian Emanuel Rego, the winningest international player in the sport. Kolodinsky has established a tour mark for fastest serve after hitting the km/h mark earlier this season in Portugal and Norway. With serving speeds only recorded for centre court matches on the SWATCH-FIVB World Tour, Kolodinsky has posted 46 of the 53 good serves over km/h this season. Kolodinsky has 16 of the top 17 centre court serves this season with only Germany s Eric Koreng (109.4) breaking the Russian string at the Austrian Grand Slam event. 5 2007 SWATCH-FIVB World Tour Highlighted by SWATCH-FIVB World Championships in Switzerland and four Grand Slams events in France, Norway, Germany and Austria, the 2007 SWATCH-FIVB World Tour will feature 23 events on four continents with prize money at US$8.35-million. The 2007 SWATCH-FIVB World Tour schedule will feature 18 events for men and 17 tournaments for the women with 13 double gender stops. The SWATCH-FIVB World Championships in Gstaad will feature $1-millon in prize money while Paris, Stavanger, Berlin and Klagenfurt will host Grand Slam stops where the combined prize money will be $2.4-million for the combined men s and women s events. Event sites hosting international Beach Volleyball events for the first-time include Manama, Bahrain (men), Singapore (women), Seoul, Korea (women), Kristiansand, Norway (men women) and Aland, Finland (men and women). Fortaleza, Brazil will stage a double gender event for the first time after staging separate men s ( , 2002) and women s ( and 2004) events. The Beijing 2008 Olympic Beach Volleyball competition will feature 24 teams per gender. By July 21, 2008, the FIVB will establish an Olympic Ranking based on the best eight performances of teams in recognized Olympic Qualification tournaments (SWATCH FIVB World Tour events, SWATCH FIVB World Championships, FIVB recognized Continental Championship Finals). The first event in the Chaoyang Park Beach Volleyball Ground where the competition for the Beijing 2008 Olympics will be held was a $50,000 FIVBChalenger stop to serve as a test even for next August s Summer Games in the Chinese capital. Twenty-four women's teams competed in the fifth of six Challenge/Satellite events on the 2007 FIVB calendar following the same Olympic format for the Olympic Beach Volleyball competition to be held August 9-22, The "Good Luck Beijing" 2007 FIVB Beach Volleyball Women's Challenger tested al aspects of the competition, including the 24-team format, results, venue, cheerleaders program and the 17,000 tons of fine sand imported from Hainan for the main and two side courts. Vivian Cunha and Angela Vieira of Brazil split the $9,000 first-place prize by defeating China s Yuan Yue and Wenwen Zhang and in the 45-minute gold medal match to win the Good Luck Beijing" 2007 FIVB Beach Volleyball Women's Challenger.
