Cooperative Games General rules (modify as necessary): Out only on direct hits unless stated otherwise Students cannot use balls as shields. Catching the ball does not cause the thrower out. Headshots don t count Fitness Dodgeball Whole gym Any number works Students need to do a fitness exercises when being hit. Great for warm-up Spread out the balls all over the gym Players try to hit as many of the other students as possible When being hit, the player needs to do a fitness exercise before joining the game again. Examples: push-ups, sit-ups, etc, Join the Team Basketball or volleyball court Pinnies for all students 1 3 dodgeballs Any number works 1 or 2 students are assigned to be it. They put on pinnies and receive the ball(s). Players cannot move with the ball. Any student who gets hit by the ball (directly or indirectly) joins the team and puts on a pinnie. The team should work together to hit the other players. Add more balls if too many players are standing around. The students who is left last is the winner and may start off the next game. This time students take off the pinnies when joining the team. Modification: The game can also be played as a tagging game without balls.
Kings Volleyball court 1 or 2 dodgeballs, pinnies Minimum 16 students Each team is trying to send the opposing team out by hitting the players with the ball. The team that sent out all payers of the opposing team first wins. Rules: King: Boundaries: Out : Each team chooses a king. King plays outside of the opposing team s half until there are no more players of own team on the court. If all own players are out, the king comes on and receives the ball(s). (S)he has 3 lives. The game is over when (s)he is dead. Players must stay on their half of the court until they are out. Players who are out join the king and continue play from outside of the opposing team s boundaries. Only players who are directly hit by the ball are out. These players then play on from the outside and can hit opposing players form there. If they hit an opposing player, they can go back inside. Team Dodgeball Basketball court or volleyball court 1-5 balls 2 even teams for the start. Give each team a ball to start off with. You may add a few more balls later. Each team is playing on their half of the court. A player who got hit needs to join the other team.
Hunting the Rabbits Volleyball court, basketball court or whole gym (depends on group size) 1 or 2 dodgeballs, pinnies Minimum 10 students The hunters are trying to kill the rabbits one by one as quickly as possible. The rabbits are trying to stay alive as long as possible. The team with the best time wins. Organization: Rabbits: Hunters: Timing: Rabbits are sitting next to each other in a straight line near the baseline. Hunters are spreading out all over the playing area. When starting the game the teacher starts the stopwatch, throws the ball up in the air and the first rabbit in the line runs away. Rabbits must run to avoid the ball If a rabbit contacts the ball (direct or indirect hit), (s)he is dead. As soon as the rabbit is dead, the next rabbit becomes the target, must get up and run away. The dead rabbit sits down at the end of the line. Rabbits that are sitting may not interfere with the ball. The hunters cannot move with the ball but are free to run when they do not have the ball. They must pass the ball to chase the rabbits. Hunters are allowed to go behind the line of rabbits. Time is stopped when the last rabbit is dead.
Doctor s Dodgeball Whole gym 2 pinnies (different colours) 2 foldable mats Each team is trying to send the opposing team out by hitting the players with the ball. The team that sent out all payers of the opposing team first wins. Preparation: Select 2 teams Each team chooses their doctor (should keep it secret) Each team chooses their spy (needs to wear a pinnie) Each team sets up their foldable mat on the court Place all balls on the center line Starting the game Spy: Doctor: Barrier Game rules: Have all players stand on the baseline of your court. On go they can run up and take as many balls as they want. However, they must retreat 3m back (I normally use the volleyball attack line) before they can run up to the center line again and hit. The spy is allowed anywhere on the court including the opponent s side Is allowed to hit players of the opposing team anywhere Doctor has healing power. (S)he can heal team members by touching them. (The team should come up with a strategy to not reveal to the other team who the doctor is. Once the doctor is down, the game is normally over quickly.) (S)he is also allowed to hit. The doctor can go to the other team s side to heal their own spy but cannot hit players on the other side. However, the doctor can be hit while being on the other side. Should be set up before the game. Cannot be adjusted during the game. Should it fall it is kept down. Players who are hit need to sit down on the spot where they got hit. They cannot participate in the game until the doctor healed them. The doctor cannot be healed. However you may modify and allow the doctor to be healed when a team member catches a ball. Towards the end of the game I allow each team to go into the opponents playing area up to the volleyball attack line.
Poison Ball Whole gym Pinnies 2 hopes 6 cones A team wins if they either knock over all the cones on the other teams side or if they sent the opposing team out by hitting the players with the ball. Preparation: Select 2 teams Place all balls on the center line Each team places a hoop on the sideline as the jail. Cones are placed 3 5 meters in front of the endline Starting the game Game rules: Have all players stand on the baseline of your court. On go they can run up and take as many balls as they want. However, they must retreat 3m back (I normally use the volleyball attack line) before they can run up to the center line again and hit. Players who got hit (only a direct ball counts) need to go to jail. They should line up so that the first one to get in should also be the first one to get out. If a student who is in play catches a ball (s)he can free the first student in the jail by passing him/her the ball. (if your class is weak at catching you can also have that student free everyone in jail) The cones cannot be guarded. Players cannot stand within 1m of the cones. Later in the game I allow each team to go into the opponents playing area up to the volleyball attack line. Towards the end of the game the students are allowed to penetrate even further into the other team s playing area. Choose a line that is close enough to the cones. I often use the 3-point line.
Colour Dodgeball Basketball court 1 set of pinnies for each team 1 or 2 balls for each team (ideally the same colour as their pinnies) A team wins if they sent all opposing players off the court first. Teams can only use their own ball. Starting the game Game rules: Minimum of 2 teams (if you have a lot of students the game works fine with 3 or 4 teams) Each team receives their ball and have to stand at the baseline (corners if you have more than 2 teams) Players are not allowed to move with the ball. No dribbling allowed either. Players are only allowed to touch the balls of their own colour. If they contact a ball of any other team (by direct/indirect hit, catch, or accidental contact) they are out. Players who got hit need to stand beyond the boundary lines. They can continue to play from outside, but are not allowed to go back inside. Players who are out can only pick up balls from the court if they remain in contact with the boundary line when reaching for the ball. Vice versa, players who are in can only pick up the balls from the outside area if they remain in contact with the boundary line. Players should avoid interfering with the balls of the other team.
