4 Women s Volleyball Head Coach Rick Rykse begins his seventh season as the head coach at Muskegon Community College and eighth season overall as part of the Jayhawks Volleyball Program since first coming to MCC in In 2016 the Jayhawks were once again ranked in the top 20 Nationally for the majority of the season and missed going to Nationals by one point after finishing the regular season in 2nd place in the MCCAA West Division. Some of the season highlights were wins over the #4, #5, #14, and #15 nationally ranked teams. Also, setter Lindsey Jacobs was selected as National player of the week in September. There were also plenty of post season awards to go around as MCC had 3 players selected first team All Conference. Ashly Schuitema, Rachel Brown, and Lindsey Jacobs earned first team All Conference honors while Marissa Hassevoort was selected 2nd team. Also, Samantha Hockstra and Alysia Folkersma were selected honorable mention All Conference. In addition to that both Lindsey and Rachel also were selected to the All Region Team with Lindsey being selected as Regional Player of the Year. Lindsey also made 2nd Team All American. In 2015 the Jayhawks qualified for the NJCAA National Championships in Phoenix, Arizona for only the 2nd time in school history. In order to get there MCC had to battle back through the losers bracket of the Regional Tournament winning five consecutive matches in the double elimination format culminating with two 5 set victories over St. Clair County Community College. Coach Rykse was selected as Coach of the Year for District E. By Winning the Regional Championship the Jayhawks were also crowned as MCCAA State Champions for the first time ever. The Jayhawks finished the season in 13th place Nationally Volleyball In 2014 the Jayhawks finished with a conference record of 12-2 which was good for 2nd place in the MCCAA West Division. Their overall record was and concluded with a loss in the Regional Finals. The Jayhawks achieved a season high national ranking of 13 which makes five consecutive years of being ranked in the top 20. The 2013 season was one of the most successful in school history as the Jayhawks won the MCAA West Division Championship with a record of 13-1 while also finishing runner-up in the MCCAA State Tournament and Regional Tournament. Their 37-7 overall record kept the Jayhawks ranked in the top five in the nation for the majority of the season with a season high ranking of #3. In recognition of their success, Coach Rykse was selected as MCCAA West Coach of the Year. Over the past seven seasons the Jayhawks have a home record of 46-7 and have had a total of sixteen players selected as first team All Conference. Prior to coming to Muskegon Community College Rick was the Head Coach at Davenport University from where he started the volleyball program in During his time at Davenport Rick had nine players receive all conference awards and in 2009 started a JV program. From , Rick was the head coach at Ravenna High School. During his time at Ravenna the Bulldogs captured four district titles, three regional titles, three Final 4 appearances, including two State runner-up finishes in Class C. Coach Rykse also received the award as Muskegon Chronicle All Area Coach of the Year on two occasions. Over the four seasons at Ravenna Rick had eight players receive MHSAA All State honors. Rick is the President and General Manager for Inside Out Volleyball in Muskegon, Michigan. He is also the Club Director of the Inside Out Juniors program and serves as the Master coach overseeing the training of all of the club teams. Rick is also the Tour Director of the Midwest Professional Volleyball Association which is a West Michigan-based beach volleyball tour that attracts pro and amateur players from throughout the Midwest. Rick has been married to Amy Rykse for the past 30 years and they have three boys; Adam, who begins his 2nd season as an assistant coach at Valparaiso University after having assisted previously at Michigan State University, Zach, a 2015 graduate from Michigan State University who is assisting the MCC Team doing video and stats and Alex who recently graduated from Moody Bible Institute in Chicago and begins his first season assisting on the Reeths Puffer coaching staff. Their family resides in the Muskegon area.

5 Women s Volleyball Assistant Coach Lindsey Balcom will begin her sixth season as the 1st Assistant on the Jayhawks staff after serving as a positional coach in Lindsey returned to Muskegon Community College after having been a player on the 2002 and 2003 Jayhawk teams. The 2002 team was the most successful team in Jayhawks history with a 39-5 record and a 5th place finish at Nationals. Lindsey then went on to play at Aquinas College for two seasons where she had a successful career. In 2006 Lindsey graduated from Aquinas College with a degree in Sports Management and Business administration. Lindsey began her coaching career by serving as the Freshman Coach and then Junior Varsity Coach at Ravenna High School from 2002 through She has also been Coach Rykse s assistant coach for a total of 11 seasons including 4 seasons at Davenport University from Lindsey has also coached for Inside Out Juniors Volleyball Club for many seasons and serves as the Office Manager for the club. Lindsey and her husband Shane reside in Conklin with their 2 children Kaylee age 11 and Sawyer age 6. Both Lindsey and Shane are avid beach volleyball players and for the past three years Lindsey has finished the season ranked 1 or 2 on the MPVA Pro Beach Tour. Shane also is the Varsity Volleyball Coach at Coopersville High School and coaches a national travel team for Inside Out Juniors Volleyball 5
