5 MEN S BASKETBALL SEASON OUTLOOK With only three returning players and one starter back from last year s team, the Kalamazoo Valley Men s Basketball team is looking to build a competitive team quickly. Freshman Grant Mitchell from Kalamazoo Loy Norrix, J.D. Richard from Kalamazoo Central and Tanner Eubank from Paw Paw are expected to make an immediate impact on the court. To add to the team s exciting season schedule, the Cougars will play host to a new invitational with perennial powerhouses Schoolcraft Community College and Owens Community College November 18 and 19. 13 WOMEN S BASKETBALL SEASON OUTLOOK The Lady Cougars are coming off an impressive season which included a 29-2 overall record, an undefeated MCCAA Western Conference Championship, and an overall MCCAA Championship. Head Coach Maureen Brown will have a wealth of talent back from last season, including statistical leader Ka-Leah Ryan and savvy point guard Sierra James. Wing players Chloe Salman, Jayshonna Blackshire, and Ellen Bregg will round out the guard core with sharp shooting and getting to the basket. Post play will be another key for the Lady Cougars, as Liz Weddon and Macayla Wright return to the paint for a strong sophomore campaign. The coaching staff has brought in another talented freshmen class to contribute to an already strong core of sophomores. Combo guards Alaina Johnson (South Haven) and Cyerra Johnson (Jackson) look to add depth to the point guard position while also being strong defenders. MHSAA state champion Madison Ayers (Pittsford) will bring a strong post presence, while state finalist Emily Erwin (Niles-Brandywine) brings sharp shooting from the outside. Emma Burns (Manistee) and Jamesha Smith (Battle Creek Central) will add strength and finesse to the post core, while Onkari Thomas (Portage Northern) will play the utility player both inside and out. The Paw Paw connection continues as post player Makayla Barnhart and small forward Rachel Cook join the long line of former Paw Paw players to wear Cougar Blue. Coach Brown had this to say about this year s team, I am looking forward to seeing what this team accomplishes this season. The young ladies are very competitive and are improving every day in practice, while also coming together and becoming a family. With the success from last year, there will be new challenges this season and an even bigger target on our back. The continued work ethic and solidarity of these young ladies will help us reach our goal of winning a regional championship and traveling to North Arkansas for the national tournament. kvcccougars.com 13
