5 2015 BASEBALL SEASON OUTLOOK In 2015 the Kalamazoo Valley baseball team will be returning some of the top players in the MCCAA. In 2014 the baseball program won its first Rawlings Gold Glove, its first Marucci Elite Hitter Award, and Team NJCAA Academic and Team MCCAA Academic awards. The Cougars saw freshman Ryan Slaughter also bring home the MCCAA Freshman of the Year honors while setting the school s single season save record. Seven players have been honored by the NJCAA as top returning players in Region 12. These players include pitchers Ryan Slaughter, Jared Vanderbor, TJ Cerven, and Ty Laurencig. Position players Ryan Slaughter, Tyler Stevens, and Tyler Trammell were also honored. Coach Piechocki states that having six players selected as top returners in our region bodes well for the Cougars as it shows we have a strong core of sophomores to build around. The incoming players, which include several highly touted freshmen along with key transfers from other junior colleges and four year schools, will make up for a very deep and talented pool of players for Coach Piechocki to manage. We will look to take advantage of the depth of our pitching staff and offense by playing more match ups this spring. This will allow our players to be put in the best possible situations for success. To have the ability to match up players off the bench late in the game will only increase our chances for victories in tight games. In 2014 the Cougars fell one game shy of qualifying for the regional tournament, which falls on the heels of losing five conference games by one run. This group of players has been in the close games; we plan to use that experience by adding in more defensive plays and giving these guys the tools to win those games this spring. If we find a way to consistently win the close games there is no doubt in my mind that this team will compete for the conference championship and qualify for the post-season. Our expectation is to be in the title hunt and to be in the post-season. kvcccougars.com 5
