6 6 Wednesday, June 20, 2018 Summer Sports Preview Pitching depth a strong suit for SCC baseball in 2018 By Doug Dornath The 2018 South Central Calhoun varsity baseball team has a strong mix of experience and youth on this year s squad as the roster is comprised of a balance of three seniors, four juniors, five sophomores, four freshmen and four eighth graders on its roster. One of our strengths will be our pitching depth, said head coach Nate Lamphier, in his third season as head coach for the Titans varsity baseball program. Our guys have done a great job of buying in during the off-season and it has shown in their games and their velocity and accuracy. Another strength this year is that our kids genuinely like to be around each other. We went through our adversities a year ago and our bond grew. The kids have done a great job of building on that this year. Last season, the Titans finished overall and 5-5 in the Twin Lakes Conference. One player who earned all-conference and all-district first-team honors is back for 2018 for the Titans senior Kyler Steinborn, who was a first team all-conference utility player as well as a first team all-district utility player selection in On the mound, Steinborn finished with a 2-3 record with a 1.72 earned-run-average in 44 and two-thirds of an inning pitched and in a total of 11 appearances in He struck out 65 batters in 2017 while allowing 25 total hits and the opponents batting average against him was only At the plate, Steinborn batted.367 with 29 hits for the season and he had 18 runs scored, four doubles, one triple and two home runs to go with 15 RBI s. Senior Tyler Jones rejoined the SCC baseball team this summer after spending much of last summer at football camps and is expected to see action for the Titans at both first base and designated hitter. SCC s third senior on the 2018 roster is Heath Walters, who saw limited action at the plate for the Titans in SCC s junior class on the roster includes Chase McAlister, Jared Birks, Bennett Lee and Andrew Westcott. Last season, McAlister scored 26 runs as he finished with 24 hits including one double and drove in eight RBI s and stole nine bases in nine attempts while batting.308. On the mound, McAlister was 0-2 in 14 appearances with six of those appearances starting with a 4.30 ERA. He had 22 strikeouts in 29.3 innings pitched. Birks finished with a team-high 31 hits and had a batting average of.365 in 2017 with seven doubles, two triples and three home runs to go with a team leading 32 RBI s a season ago. Sophomores on the roster this summer for the Titans include Josh Henkenius, Zane Neubaum, Chase Scheidegger, Bryce Smidt and Truman Boyd-Harris. Henkenius, Neubaum and Scheidegger return with the most experience of the returning sophomores on this year s roster. Henkenius had 22 hits, 12 runs scored and drove in 16 RBI s in 2017 as he batted.310 in 71 at bats. Neubaum finished with 21 hits in 71 at bats with five runs scored and six RBI s. Neubaum finished with a.296 batting average in Scheidegger had 23 at bats in 2017 for the Titans and finished with two hits while scoring six runs. Members on the squad from the freshman class this summer include Ayden Toms, Cole Corey, Brennan Holder and Evan Jacobs while the eighth graders for SCC on the 2018 baseball roster include Kevin King, Blake McAlister, Cody Thompson and Jayden Soard. A year ago, SCC tied for fifth place in the Twin Lakes Conference standings along with Newell-Fonda and Southeast Valley. The co-champions of the TLC in 2017 were Alta-Aurelia and Sioux Central at 9-1 while Pocahontas Area and East Sac County tied for third place at 6-4 in the league. Lamphier listed Pocahontas Area, Alta-Aurelia, SCC, Newell-Fonda and Sioux Central as the top five teams in the TLC in 2018 heading into the season. The Titans began the 2018 Twin Lakes Conference season at home May 30 against GT/RA and then had another home contest in Lytton against Sioux Central June 4. SCC was at Manson against Manson Northwest Webster June 4 while SCC hosted West Bend-Mallard June 6. SCC will face Emmetsburg for the first time in TLC play Friday, June 8 in Emmetsburg. The week of June 11 through June 15 is filled with important TLC contests against Alta-Aurelia in Alta Monday, June 11, a home contest with Pocahontas Area Wednesday, June 13, and a key TLC contest at Sac City against East Sac County Friday, June 15. SCC is scheduled to face St. Mary s in Lytton Monday, June 18 and will play at Fonda Wednesday, June 20 against Newell-Fonda. The conference finale in 2018 for SCC is on Friday, June 22 in Lytton against Southeast Valley. The Titans final contest of the regular season is a home contest against Greene County Thursday, July 5 with the start of the post-season in 2018 for SCC beginning Saturday, July 7 at a site to be determined. Our keys to success are simple control what we can control, said Lamphier. If we do that, we feel as a program we will be happy where we were able to finish come the end of July South Central Calhoun varsity baseball roster Seniors: Tyler Jones, Heath Walters, Kyler Steinborn; Juniors: Bennett Lee, Chase McAlister, Jared Birks, Andrew Westcott; Sophomores: Josh Henkenius, Zane Neubaum, Chase Scheidegger, Bryce Smidt, Truman Boyd-Harris; Freshmen: Ayden Toms, Cole Corey, Brennan Holder, Evan Jacobs; Eighth graders: Kevin King, Blake McAlister, Cody Thompson, Jayden Soard.
