5 The Graphic-Advocate Wednesday, December 13, Francis takes over reigns of SCC girls program By Doug Dornath After learning the ropes from long-time South Central Calhoun head coach Dave Birks each of the past two seasons as an assistant coach, new Titans varsity head girls basketball coach Eric Francis will take much of the knowledge he learned from the retired Hall of Fame coach and apply those teaching tools to his own style of coaching as the season tipped off in November. For Francis, this is the first time he has been a head coach for a varsity girls basketball program as he has had assistant coaching roles at Jesup, Pocahontas Area, Estherville-Lincoln Central and at SCC. He has a familiarity with many of the athletes at SCC as he also has been the varsity softball coach for the Titans the last few seasons. Coach Birks has been great to work with the past couple of seasons, said Francis of being an assistant for the Titans girls basketball team the past two seasons. He taught me a lot about the game of basketball, coaching and working with the girls. I am also excited to get the season kicked off and start this new journey. We discussed many aspects about basketball and coaching, added Francis. One of the biggest things that I have taken is from a coaching standpoint. We discussed ways to get the girls motivated to give it their all, whether they are on the court or in the classroom and that the girls should want to be the best possible person they can be. For , the Titans have five returning letter-winners from last season s squad that finished 17-7 overall as the SCC was 5-4 in the Twin Lakes Conference a season ago, which was tied for fourth place overall in the league with GT/RA. Those returning letter-winners for SCC include seniors Hannah Seil and Jessica Hicks, juniors Maddie Jones and Heidi Hammen and sophomore Emma McKinney. This year s captains for the Titans include Seil, Hicks, Hammen and Jones. Jones was a first-team all-conference selection a season ago for the Titans while Hammen earned third-team all-conference honors last season for SCC. Jones was second on the team in scoring in with a 13.3 point-per-game average while she ranked second in rebounds with 138, and first in assists with 113 and first in steals with 99 for the season. Hammen was third in scoring a season ago for SCC with 8.5 points per outing while she was third in rebounding with 91 rebounds and third in steals with 40. Francis said other players who worked hard during the off-season who did not see much playing time for the Titans a season ago who are expected to contribute this winter include senior Serena Smith, junior Anna McChesney and sophomore Haley Stauter and he listed freshman Brielle Korleski as another of the promising varsity newcomers. These girls worked in the off-season by attending our open gyms and participating in summer camps, said Francis. My goals for the team are to improve every day, to compete for the Twin Lakes Conference title and to make it down to the state tournament, added Francis. My expectations for this year s team is for the constant improvement as young ladies both on and off the basketball court. I hope these girls will continue to encourage one another to bring out their best abilities for the betterment of South Central Calhoun. Francis expects Newell-Fonda to be one of the front-runners for the conference title this winter as he noted they seem to contend for the TLC title each and every year. In addition, he thinks SCC, GT/RA and Alta-Aurelia will make an attempt at the top spot. The Mustangs were second in the TLC in at 8-1 in the league and were 20-4 overall. GT/RA was tied for fourth in the league with SCC at 5-4 as they finished 15-7 overall. Alta-Aurelia was 4-5 in the TLC a season ago and 8-12 overall but returns three players from last year s squad who earned all-conference honors. The conference season started for the Titans Dec. 1 at East Sac County. Other conference contests for SCC this winter include the following dates and locations: at Ruthven versus GT/RA Dec. 8, at Lake City versus Emmetsburg Dec. 15, at St SCC Girls Varsity Basketball Roster Seniors Jessica Hicks, Hannah Seil, Serena Smith, Mikayla Schultz; Juniors Maddie Jones, Anna McChesney, Heidi Hammen; Sophomores Haley Stauter, Emma McKinney; Freshmen Brielle Korleski, Ashley Hanks, Sally Musselman. Mary s in Storm Lake Jan. 5, versus Alta-Aurelia in Rockwell City Jan. 12, against Pocahontas Area in Rockwell City Jan. 16, at Sioux Rapids against Sioux Central Jan. 19, at West Bend versus West Bend-Mallard Jan. 23, versus Newell-Fonda in Lake City Jan. 26, versus Southeast Valley in Rockwell City Jan. 30 and the TLC finale against Manson Northwest Webster in Manson Feb. 2. 6 6 Wednesday, December 13, 2017 The Graphic-Advocate SCC wrestlers strive for 2018 TLC crown By Doug Dornath A two-year drought at the top of the Twin Lakes Conference has the South Central Calhoun varsity wrestling team hungry to make those memories distant ones as the Titans hope to regain their claim as being conference dual champions once again this season. The Titans are coming off a 14-7 overall record in where they were third in the Twin Lakes Conference standings at 6-2 behind defending champion Graettinger-Terrill/Ruthven-Ayrshire (8-0 in TLC duals) and Pocahontas Area/ Laurens-Marathon (7-1 in in TLC duals). The Titans are coached by Lance Schultz, who is entering his 21 st season in the school district as he boasts a record of in those 21 seasons for Southern Cal/RCL-SCAL/SCC, while holding a overall career record beginning his 25 th season overall as a head wrestling coach. Top returning wrestlers for the SCC squad include a pair of district qualifiers in 2017 senior Brody Goodman and junior Chase McAlister. Goodman is a three-time conference tournament finalist and was a 2016 state qualifier for the Titans at 152 pounds Goodman (160) finished 36-8 overall with 19 pins a season ago and he had 121 career wins with 64 pins. McAlister (152) was a state qualifier in 2016 at 132 pounds and was a conference finalist at 132 pounds in 2017 as he was overall with 18 wins by fall. McAlister has 82 career wins with 39 of those by fall. Also returning letter-winners who will lead the Titans include seniors Tanner Fistler (145) and Jered Campbell (170), junior Keagan King (132), and sophomores Hannah Payne (113), Hunter Voith (138), Keagan Meyer (182) and Brian King (220). Also returning with limited varsity experience for SCC are junior Kody Kutz (285) and sophomore Tristan Patterson (182). Fistler finished last season while Campbell was overall. Keagan King was last year and has 33 career wins Stewart Memorial Community Hospital 1301 W. Main St. Lake City (712) with three pins. Payne was a season ago with a win by fall while Voith was his freshman season at SCC. Brian King is coming off a record with eight wins by fall in Our seniors will be our major key, stated Schultz. Their leadership with what they say and do will take us as far as they want this team to go. Staying healthy will also be a key as our depth may be depleted a bit in the lower weights. Our younger wrestlers will need to mature quickly for us to be successful. Schultz believes there are a number of teams in contention for the top spots in the Twin Lakes Conference dual standings again this winter. GT/RA should be strong again and PAC/L-M will also figure somewhere in there, said Schultz. Southeast Valley will be much improved as will East Sac County. You can never count out Manson NW and the addition of Emmetsburg should also make this interesting. Schultz said the team has the same goals as they always do to improve in every practice and every meet so they can peak at the sectional time, to have a winning dual meet season, to compete for the team title in every tournament they compete in, to get back on top of the TLC and to qualify for the regional and state duals. Home dates on South Central Calhoun s schedule at Rockwell City this winter include a quadrangular conference meet against PAC, Southeast Valley and GT/RA Dec. 7, a quadrangular against Woodbury Central, Okoboji and Alta-Aurelia Dec. 19, a conference quadrangular dual meet Jan. 23 against East Sac County, Sioux Central South Central Calhoun High School Wrestling Roster Seniors Brody Goodman, Tanner Fistler, Jered Campbell, Jacob Stephenson, Shiloh Meyer; Juniors Chase McAlister, Keagan King, Kody Kutz, Josh Van Hulzen; Sophomores Hannah Payne, Hunter Voith, Keagen Meyer, Tristan Patterson, Brian King; Freshmen Ayden Toms, Orion Sweeney, Jordan Khommanyvong, Jaydon Makinson, Gabe Schuttler, Brayden Hawkins. and West Bend-Mallard, and the annual South Central Calhoun Dual Tournament Saturday, Jan. 27. The Titans will be competing in Class 2A for the first time in a couple of seasons when the 2018 post-season rolls around as they have been assigned to the 2A Sectional Tournament hosted by Humboldt Saturday, Feb. 3, Teams included at the Humboldt Sectional include Algona, Clarion-Goldfied/Dows, SCC, Pocahontas Area/L-M, Humboldt and Southeast Valley. The 2018 Class 2A District Tournament the Titans will be competing at is hosted by Webster City Feb. 10 as teams from the Humboldt and Ballard of Huxley Sectional Tournaments will send their district qualifiers to the District meet hosted by the Lynx. The 2018 Iowa State High School Association State Dual Tournament will be Wednesday, Feb. 14 at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines, with the Traditional State Tournament being held there Feb. 15 through Feb. 17.
