3 2017 BASEBALL SEASON OUTLOOK The Cougars are coming off one of their best seasons in program history and look to continue to raise the bar at Kalamazoo Valley. In 2016, the baseball program received its first national ranking, breaking into the polls at #25 and getting as high as #19 in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) baseball polls. The Cougars were able to follow this up with a birth to the NJCAA Regionals. This season, the team hopes to continue to raise the bar for the Kalamazoo Valley baseball program. The program looks to make it back to the NJCAA Regionals, which will be the first time in a decade that the program has gone to back-to-back regional competition. Brennan Vaughn. In order to achieve its season goals, the team will lean on a young core of freshmen position players who comprise one of the most talented recruiting classes in recent years at Kalamazoo Valley. We are here to prove that last year was not a fluke. It is the expectation, said Coach Cody Piechocki. We have reloaded and no longer believe in re-building. The building phase at Kalamazoo Valley is over. The foundation has been laid and the expectations set. I look for this team to continue moving the program forward as we seek our first World Series appearance. Valley returns several of its top pitchers, including Joey Knapp who went 8-0 in 2016 and Brock Emery who was third on the team in innings. Valley also returns one of its top offensive threats in kvcccougars.com 3

15 2017 SOFTBALL The Lady Cougars finished the 2016 season with a overall record and a 19-9 conference record. The players and coaches are all very determined to improve the conference record. Valley has six returning players who will welcome six freshman and one transfer student to the team for the 2017 season. The leadership on the team this year is impeccable, Coach VanderBor said. Everyone on the team has set both personal goals and team goals. Each player has gone the extra mile to not only better themselves, but the team as a whole. The positivity and energy this team builds will push them harder each day. First year head coach Morgan VanderBor is looking to take the team back to the Regional Championship and work its way to play in the National Championship. She is joined this season by two new assistant coaches Erika Whittington and Emily McCarty. Both bring years of playing experience to Kalamazoo Valley. VanderBor served as assistant coach for the Lady Cougars last season. Not only do they put it the time on the field, but VanderBor said, they also make sure that they keep up on their grades in the classroom. We will continue the tradition of playing with PRIDE: Passion, Respect, Intensity, Discipline, and Enthusiasm, she said. kvcccougars.com 15
