1 THE ANCHOR ISSUE 24 Maturing Seniors By: Jacolby Doss & Shanna Jackson Every year, the senior class seems to grow and mature at a fast rate. During senior year, students realize that this is their very last year of high school before college and before the beginning of their adult lives. Everything is about to change, and the real word is about to be thrust upon them. Not only is it the realization that things are about to change, but also, we realize that this final semester of school will be the final time we see a large deal of our friends. With this in mind, senior students seem to bond just a little bit more than previously usual. As time for the present is being made, time is being given to reflect upon and appreciate all that is in our lives. The remainder of this semester is the ending of a long chapter in the storybooks of our lives. However, it is not the ending of our story, for our story is only beginning. A new page is about to be turned, and it will serve as a canvas on which we will determine how to proceed and give ourselves the ending we all deserve and desire. 3 Baseball and Softball Coming off of an impressive season, the Russell County Laker Baseball team is looking ahead to another successful season. The Lakers finished with a record of last season, with their season ending against Bowling Green in the regional tournament. The Lakers easily won the district last year and look to do the same this year. The team has eight seniors this year and Coach David Rexroat believes the senior leadership we have on this team will be vital to us this season. The first home baseball game will be Wednesday March 27th against Campbellsville at 6:00 p.m. The Lady Laker Softball team has a new coach this year. Mike Scott has taken over the softball coaching position. The Lady Lakers look to build off their record last season. The Lakers fell in the district tournament last year to Metcalfe County. The Lady Lakers will look to challenge for the district title this year. The Lady Lakers are a very young team with several 8th graders, freshmen, and sophomores. The Lady Lakers are led by seniors Cheyenne Simpson and Taylor Jones. The first home softball game will be Tuesday March 19th against Monroe County at 5:30 p.m. Track and Tennis The Russell County track team had a great season and the same is to be expected this season. The track team has many athletes returning from last year, where the team set many school records in multiple events. The team also has several juniors and seniors, as well as several new faces. The first track meet is next Friday March 22nd at Madison Central. The Russell County Tennis team also has a new coach. New science teacher Jason Bridgeman takes over as the new tennis coach at Russell County. Coach Bridgeman mentions that he has a young team but believes that they have a lot of potential. Mr. Bridgeman is assisted by Calvin Kerr.

7 Ms. Walters Then and Now Then What kind of student were you during high school? I was very studious in high school. I always completed my work and never got in trouble. I took all honors and dual credit classes available at the time. High school was where I discovered my love of mathematics, and where I decided to become a math teacher. I was friends with everyone, and enjoyed school. I liked learning new things, no matter what the subject. What kind of school activities were you involved in? I was an outfielder for the Lady Laker softball team. I was also on the RCHS academic team. I was captain of the varsity quick recall team and participated in written assessments. I was a member of the National Honor Society and the local chapter of FBLA (Future Business leaders of America). As a junior I was a writer for the Red Flash, the 1990 s version of the RCHS school newspaper. What did you do outside of school? (Jobs, Extracurricular Activities, Etc.) During my junior and senior years, as well as through college, I worked at McDonald s. I was part of the first group of workers when McDonald s opened in the summer of I worked in every part of the store, from front counter to drive thru to grill, and led many kids birthday parties. I was also very active in my church youth group, and taught VBS in the summer. Occasionally I tutored high school or middle school students in math or Spanish. Now What are you involved in now? I am the co-sponsor of the National Honor Society at RCHS. I am also a huge fan of all Laker sports, especially basketball and football. I take great pride in the accomplishments of our athletes, and I try to go to as many games as my schedule will allow. At home, I love to read and watch reality TV. I also spend as much time as possible with my niece and nephew, and attend as many of my nephew s sporting events as I can.
