1 THE ANCHOR ISSUE 2 Obesity Epidemic By: Jacolby & Shanna Many of you have noticed a change in our food proportions at lunch. Why are they smaller? Who made the change? Michelle Obama. Childhood obesity is a major issue in this country. One in three children (ages 2 19) in the United States is overweight or obese. Overweight adolescents have a 70% chance of becoming overweight adults. So, what are some health concerns with obesity? The major risk is heart disease. People whose weight lies around their stomach have a higher chance of developing heart disease. Diabetes is another concern of obese people. Every three seconds, someone is diagnosed with diabetes. Diabetes can also lead to early death, heart disease, stroke, and blindness. So, in our opinion, this change is one that, although unpopular among some, will prove beneficial in the lives of these it affects. With healthier lunch options and smaller, more appropriate portion sizes, changes of obesity and related diseases are declining. It appears this change is here to stay. 2 Club interviews FFA Q: Why do you love your club? A: Ashley Franklin (vice president)- FFA has given me opportunities to meet lots of new people, and has given me leadership and public speaking skills that I wouldn t have had if I hadn t joined FFA. Y-Club Q: Why did you want to be an officer this year? A: Jessica Jones (chaplain) - I wanted to involve more people in devotion and get more of a family-like atmosphere. Q: What are your expectations for Y- Club this year? A: Evan Selby (vice president)- Unparalleled success at conferences, numerous service projects, and to grow closer as a famil-y. Q: What are your club plans for this year as president? A: Sidney Malone (president)- I plan on having more socials, service projects, get more Y-Club members involved in KYA and KUNA, and pay forward to set a good example for our community. Q: What s your favorite Y-Club memory? A: Hunter Carnes (treasurer) and Allyssa Bachman (service project leader)- Freshman year, at KYA, we stacked all the furniture in our room on Olivia and Katie s bed while they were gone. Then as they came through the door, we accidentally blew up the coffee-maker. There was coffee all over the floor! Q: Why did you want to be an officer this year? A: Jessica Franklin (president)- I ve always looked up to previous FFA officers and wanted to set an example for next year s possible officers. Q: What are your club plans for this year as an advisor? A: Mrs. Wethington- I plan on having new, fun activities such as archery and forestry competitions. I also want to have more community service projects, a cookout, rodeo, and a farm machinery show. I m especially excited to prepare and compete in many career development events. DECA Q: How does your club help kids in the real world? A: Mrs. Rixon- DECA is recognized for helping students in the future with making good resumes when applying for a job, and also for helping develop their speaking skills. Q: What have you accomplished through DECA? A: Shanna Jackson (member)- In our state DECA competition this past year, we won first place! Q: Why do you love your club? A: Zach Parker (member)- It is so much fun and has made me more outspoken.

4 This week we asked the people who walk the hallwasy here at RCHS who they were most afraid of when it comes to administartion and why. Heres what they said: Jessica Franklin: Mr. Allen because his classes are hard. Michael Justice: Bertram because he could kill me. Jacob Taylor: Coach Rexroat because he is an intimidating figure. Senora Palacky: Coach Rexroat, I mean look at him. Karanda Gentry: Feldhous because his body is like a stallion. Chelsie Martin: Mrs. Ellis because of the way her head shakes when she is in a rage. Bailey Holder: Feldhaus because he s all muscle. Spencer Roy: Senior Chief Kinder, he is a scary old man. Tyler Rodriguez: Mrs. Akerman because she has a temper. Jordan Mann: Mrs. Stapp because she has a tendency to go off on kids. Joe Hammond: Mrs. Stapp because she is mean to me. Kendall McFarland: Mrs. Davidson because she talks really fast. Brianna Stephens: Mrs. Ellis because she s grouchy all of the time. Daniel Montallvo: Mr. Ellis because I know him personally. Jessica Jones: Coach Feldhaus because of his giant demeaning figure. Tyler Robertson: Mrs. Bean, she crazy. Brooklyn Mann: Mrs. Ellis because she yells a lot. Wes Fletcher: Mrs. Ellis because she s always angry. Stephanie McGowan: Tammy Jessee because she always throws things at me. Nick Coe: Mrs. Robertson, she intimidates me. McKenzie Kelsey: Mrs. Davidson because she talks quickly and it scares me. Marissia Roark: Mrs. Stapp because she talks very fast. Coach Rexroat: Mr. Bolin because he is a military man. Abby Robertson: Mrs. Robertson because she is my mom. This week we chose two of our more recent addistions to RCHS to do our teacher spotlight: Ms. Molly M ounce who started working in the math department last year and Mr. Eric Godby who started teacher social studies here this year. They both answered some questions for us. Ms. Mounces Answers: What are some of the perks of your job? Feeling like I make a difference by helping kids What s something you do every day in your job? Make checklist! I like to have an agenda for each day and check items off as I go it makes me feel accomplished What s something you love about the school? Everyone is so welcoming; always willing to help! What s some advice you would give to the senior class? It flies by enjoy every moment with your friends, you ll never get time like this again What are some of the new school policies you agree with? The cell phone policy it cuts down the use of cell phones during class time What was your most memorable high school memory? Attending all the sporting events! I was very school spirited! What have you learned during your career? It s important to love what you do! What Mr. Godby had to say: What are some of the perks of your job? Working with all of the awesome faculty, staff, and students at RCHS, and developing a close bond with the students What s something you do every day in your job? LOTS of planning and prepping! Its definitely a 24/7 job but I love it! What s something you love about the school? I love everything! The school spirit is amazing! The support and friendship of my fellow DOCK teachers is invaluable. What is your most memorable moment in this school? Well, I ve only been at RCHS for two weeks but, so far, my most memorable moment has been the Pep Rally last Friday and the trick played on Mr. Williams. He s a great leader and has been very helpful to me this year. What s some advice you would give to the senior class? I ve always got lots of advice. First, and foremost, you each need to develop a close relationship with Jesus Christ. In those moments when it seems nothing is going your way, he is ALWAYS with you. Read Romans 8. Also, decide a course of action for your life, don t let life simply pass you by. Set goals, both short-term and long-term for yourselves, write them down and refer to them daily. Talk to your family members about the goals you ve set for yourselves. Work diligently to achieve them. What s a hobby you enjoy? What have you learned during your career? I have learned lots of valuable life lessons during my career. One is that each student is special in their own unique way. I began my reaching career in Metcalfe County and a couple of months into that first year a student of mine was killed in a car wreck. That was a terrible tragedy that makes one realize just how special life is and we should make each day the very best possible.

5 FOOTBALL BY: BRANDON ROARK & ZAC OAKES LAKER BOYS SHUT OUT CAMPBELLSVILLE Last Friday night, The Russell County High School Mighty Lakers made the journey to take on Campbellsville High School at Ron Finley Field on the campus of Campbellsville University. The Lakers dominated from the start with a stout defense and a strong rushing attack, shutting out Campbellsville with a final score of Russell County started hot, with Nick Britt scoring the first touchdown of the game around 17 seconds in with a 65 yard run on the second play from scrimmage. Britt, one of the top running backs in 4A, finished the game with an astounding 197 yards rushing and 3 touchdowns on only 9 carries, earning him Offensive Player of the Game. On the defensive side of the ball, Mason Short led the way with 9 tackles and also had a fumble recovery for a touchdown. Linebackers Angel Deck and Nathan Stearns also scored defensive touchdowns for the Lakers. Short was named Defensive Player of the Game for his efforts. Lucas Williams got off to a shaky start, missing his first extrapoint attempt. However, Williams quickly bounced back, hitting a field goal from 27 yards out and hitting every extra-point attempt. When Senior Lucas Whittle was asked about the game, he stated that it was a good win but their play wasn t as good as they had wanted. He also cited that there was a lot of work to put in before next week, but that they were definitely looking forward to the Whitley County game. The Lakers take the field against Whitley County High School Friday, August 24. The Lakers defeated Whitley County 30-0 last season, but both teams are much improved and it should be a good test for the Lakers. Everyone that is able is asked to make the drive over to Whitley County to support our Mighty Laker Football Team in their quest for Win Number 2 in this young season.

6 LAKER GOLF Both the Boys and Girls Golf team have been busy lately. The Boys traveled to Lexington to play in the Tates Creek Commodore Classic. The boys finished with a team score of 364. Senior Nick Coe led the way for the Lakers, shooting a score of 84, good enough for 48th individually. Brett Kimbler shot an 86, Logan Shearer shot a 93, and Justin Womack shot 101. The Lakers finished 19th of 22 teams in the Invitational. Nick stated that despite the team s disappointing finish, there are still places that the team can improve and some people need to step up their game. #LoganShearer The Girls Golf team played in the Joy of Golf Tournament on Saturday August 18. The Girls played well, finishing 5th overall. Brianne Coe led the way for the Lady Lakers, shooting a 73, good enough for 4th individually. Kenna Richardson shot an 82, Hailey Aaron a 94, and Lizzy Loy a 96. The Lady Lakers will be hosting the Kentucky Invitational Tournament August 25 at Lakewood Country Club. LADY LAKER VOLLYBALL The Lady Laker Volleyball team is off to a solid start, winning three of their first four matches. Their only loss was a close loss Tuesday, August 21 to Pulaski County. We caught up with a couple of freshman volleyball players in Marissia Roark and Brooklyn Booth to get their thoughts on their first year of volleyball and the season so far. 1. How do you like volleyball as a freshman? Marissia: It s fun. Brooklyn: I really like it. 2. What do you think about your team? Marissia: They re really good and supportive. Brooklyn: We re a good team. We have a lot of sportsmanship and we do a good job of keeping each other up. 3. Are you going to play next year? Marissia: Yes, I am. Brooklyn: Yes.
