All times local to site BOLD = Home matches at Seattle Academy HIGH EXPECTATIONS: The Seattle University volleyball team opens its 17th season since its reinstatement in 1999 with a trip to Northern California for the Molten Classic, hosted by the University of California at Haas Pavilion. The Redhawks open the season with in-state rival Eastern Washington across the net, followed by matches against Nevada and the host Bears. The Redhawks will play their first 15 matches away from home, plus they will host matches at Seattle Academy this season due to construction at the Connolly Center. Despite those issues, confidence is high within the Seattle U program, as a blend of returning players and talented newcomers should continue the improvement the team has seen over the past couple of years. WRAPPING UP 2014: Seattle University posted a overall record last season, including an 8-6 mark within the Western Athletic Conference that placed the team in a tie for fourth place in the league standings. The non-conference slate was highlighted by two teams from the previous year s national semifinals, as the Redhawks faced Texas at New Mexico s tournament and made the short drive to Montlake to take on Washington. The highlight of the non-conference season was back-to-back thrilling five-set victories at Eastern Washington and at Montana. After losing a tough five-set match to Utah Valley in the conference opener, Seattle U won three straight WAC matches, highlighted by a 3-1 victory over defending WAC champion New Mexico State. The Redhawks would sweep Chicago State, UT Pan American, and Grand Canyon during the regular season. For the second straight year, Seattle U faced Utah Valley in the first round of the WAC Tournament, and the Redhawks once again eliminated the Wolverines in five sets, winning the deciding set Seattle U upset Missouri-Kansas City, the regular season WAC champions, in the semifinals, taking the fifth set Although Seattle U lost to CSU Bakersfield in the final, Martina Samadan, previously named First Team All-WAC, and Matea Mamic earned spots on the All-WAC Tournament Team. Samadan led the team with 301 kills, 24 service aces, and 131 total blocks. Setter Kerry Lane passed the 1,000-assist mark for the second straight season, finishing with 1,107 assists. Iris Ivanis played well all around the court, finishing with a team-high 248 digs to go along with 221 kills. Besides Samadan, Jelena Vujcin also received a postseason honor, as she was voted onto the WAC All-Newcomer squad.

3 SCOUTING EASTERN WASHINGTON: The Eagles are coming off a 9-20 record during the 2014 season, including a 5-11 mark within the Big Sky Conference, finishing ninth in the league standings. Allie Schumacher is the team s leading returning hitter after collecting 279 kills in Both Sophie Miller (583 assists) and Nicole Rigoni (472 assists) are back as the Eagles setters, as is Ryann Ensrud, the team leader in digs with 274. Eastern Washington will need to find new talent defensively at the net, as its top three blockers from last season are no longer on the team. SERIES HISTORY: This is the eighth meeting all-time between Seattle U and Eastern Washington, with the Redhawks holding a 5-2 series advantage. The Eagles took the first meeting in Cheney Oct. 21, 2008, but Seattle U was able to win both meetings in 2010, coming back from a 2-1 deficit for a 3-2 victory in Seattle Aug. 28, 2010, followed by a straight-set win in Cheney Oct. 4, The Redhawks opened the 2011 season with a three-set win over the Eagles at the Connolly Center, followed by a four-set victory in Wyoming in Eastern Washington defeated Seattle U in three sets at the Connolly Center Sept. 2, 2013, but Seattle U once again rallied from a 2-1 deficit last season at Reese Court to defeat the Eagles, winning the fifth set Martina Samadan led the Redhawks with 19 kills, while Iris Ivanis finished with 16 kills and 13 digs. SCOUTING NEVADA: The Wolf Pack is looking to improve from an 8-20 record in 2014, including a 5-13 mark within the Mountain West Conference to finish ninth in the league standings. Lee Nelson enters his first season as head coach at Nevada and has seven returning letterwinners to work with, led by sophomore outside hitter Madison Foley, who collected 239 kills and 243 digs as a freshman in 2014, and Sam Willoughby, a senior with 228 kills and 61 total blocks last season. Setter Lyndsey Anderson is back after earning 801 assists, 24 service aces, and 205 digs in Libero Kara Kasser also returns to the Wolf Pack, coming off a season in which she led the team with 311 digs. SERIES HISTORY: This is the fourth meeting all-time between Seattle U and Nevada, with the Wolf Pack holding a 2-1 series edge. Nevada won the first meeting in Reno, Nev., in four sets on Sept. 7, 2008, followed by another victory on its home floor in three sets on Oct. 20, Seattle U finally broke through at Washington State s tournament in Pullman, Wash., on Sept. 21, 2013, winning in straight sets over the Wolf Pack. Led by Iris Ivanis with 12 kills and 11 digs, Seattle U hit.337 in the match and held Nevada to an.062 hitting percentage. SCOUTING CALIFORNIA: The Golden Bears are coming off a record in the 2014 season, including a 2-18 mark within the Pac-12 Conference that put the team in 11th place in the final league standings. An experienced squad returns to Berkeley this season, with 12 letterwinners, including five starters and the libero, back for the Bears. Senior middle blocker Lillian Schonewise was an AVCA All-American Honorable Mention last season after leading the Bears with 106 total blocks. Setter Alyssa Jensen ranked third in the Pac-12 in assists per set (11.21), finishing with 1,278 total assists. Libero Maddy Kerr is also back for California after collecting 462 defensive digs during the 2014 season. This will be the first meeting all-time between Seattle University and California. SEATTLE U VS. THE PAC-12: The Redhawks are still looking for that breakthrough victory over one of the Pac- 12 schools. Since starting to play a full Division I schedule in 2008, Seattle U has faced a Pac-12 school 24 times, losing all 24 matches. The vast majority of those contests have come against the four schools in the Pacific Northwest: Washington (0-6), Washington State (0-4), Oregon (0-6), and Oregon State (0-5). The Redhawks have also faced Arizona State twice and UCLA once. Seattle U nearly pulled off a victory in its first-ever match against a Pac-12 foe, losing to Washington State in five sets at Boise State s tournament Aug. 30, In 2010, the Redhawks went five sets with both Oregon and Oregon State before falling in the deciding set. They also went five sets with Washington State again on Aug. 27, 2011, but the Cougars pulled out a victory in the fifth set. WICKED SMART: The Seattle U volleyball team excelled in the classroom, earning the AVCA Team Academic Award after posting a cumulative grade point average over 3.30 last year. Eight members of the team received Academic All-WAC recognition, including returners Iris Ivanis, Kerry Lane, Martina Samadan, and Kirstin Schauble. GOING THE DISTANCE: One of the reasons Seattle U found success last season was its ability to persevere in long matches, as the Redhawks went 5-1 in five-set contests during the 2014 season. The first two five-set matches came in back-to-back contests on the road in mid-september, as the Redhawks rallied from a 2-1 deficit to defeat Eastern Washington, winning the fifth set 15-11, and then holding on to defeat Montana in five sets after taking the deciding set After defeating Grand Canyon in five sets on Nov. 13, the Redhawks were able to advance to the finals of the WAC Tournament thanks to dramatic five-set victories over Utah Valley and Missouri-Kansas City on back-toback nights. In James Finley s two seasons at Seattle U, the Redhawks are 7-1 in five-set matches.

4 PRESEASON PREDICTIONS: The rest of the Western Athletic Conference volleyball coaches believe that Seattle University will be a contender for the 2015 league title, as the Redhawks were picked to finish in third place and three Seattle U players were selected as part of the Preseason All-WAC Team. Defending WAC regular season champion Missouri-Kansas City received four first-place votes and 45 total points to lead the poll, followed closely by New Mexico State with two first-place votes and 40 total points. Seattle U picked up one first-place vote and 37 total points, finishing ahead of CSU Bakersfield, the 2014 WAC Tournament champions, as the Roadrunners received the final first-place vote and 33 total points. Utah Valley placed fifth in the poll with 28 total points, followed by Grand Canyon in sixth place with 20 points, seventh place University of Texas Rio Grande Valley with 13 points, and eighth place Chicago State with eight points. Senior middle blocker Martina Samadan, junior outside hitter Matea Mamic, and sophomore opposite side hitter Jelena Vujcin were named to the Preseason All-WAC Volleyball Team. THE LEADER OF THE REDHAWKS: James Finley begins his third season as head coach of the Seattle University volleyball team. In 2014, he led the Redhawks to their second straight winning conference season (8-6) and to the finals of the WAC Volleyball Tournament. Martina Samadan earned First Team All-WAC honors, while Jelena Vujcin was voted onto the WAC All-Newcomer Team. In his first season at Seattle U, he helped the Redhawks post a winning conference record (9-7) and advance to the semifinals of the WAC Tournament. Under his tutelage, Iris Ivanis earned WAC Freshman of the Year honors, while Martina Samadan joined Ivanis as Second Team All-WAC honorees. Finley served as head coach at Virginia Commonwealth University for eight years, compiling a (.566) record from 2005 to He led the Rams to four conference championship matches, including the 2005 Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) tournament title that advanced VCU into the NCAA Tournament. In 2012, Finley oversaw the team s transition to the Atlantic-10 Conference, where the Rams posted a 10-4 league record as part of a 25-6 overall mark, finishing third in the 12-team league before falling in the conference tournament semifinals. Finley went to VCU from Arizona Western College, where he served as head coach from 2001 to 2005, compiling a (.787) record over four seasons. He had been the assistant coach at UTEP for two seasons before heading to Arizona Western. A high school volleyball coach from 1992 to 1999, Finley has run his own volleyball camps since He earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Sul Ross State University in 1983 and has been an instructor at Texas A&M University, Arizona Western College, and El Paso Community College. HOME AWAY FROM HOME: With the Commitment to Equity renovation of the Connolly Center North Court continuing through the fall, the Seattle University athletics department has come to an agreement with Seattle Academy of Arts and Sciences for the Redhawk volleyball team to play its home matches at Seattle Academy during the 2015 season. The entrance to the gymnasium at Seattle Academy is located at th Avenue near the corner of 13th Avenue and East Spring Street. Parking will be available in the Seattle University visitor lot, accessible by turning into the SU campus on East Marion Street off 12th Avenue. Seattle U has won at least one match in each of the previous two WAC Tournaments, reaching the semifinals in 2013 before advancing to the championship match in 2014.
