Head Coach: Allison Lawrence, 2nd Season/9th Overall (Oregon State, 05) Assistant Coach: Giedre Tarnauskaite, 3rd Season (Arkansas State, 05) Assistant Coach: Dana Cranston, 2nd Season (Colorado State, 13) Montana volleyball coach Allison Lawrence wants to use the overused coaching cliché and tell her team that Tuesdays is just another game. The truth is, Tuesday is not just another game, so while she wants her team to stay even-keeled and focused on the big picture, she s not trying to hide the excitement surrounding the program ahead of Tuesday s rivalry match vs. Montana State. Montana is coming off of a 2-0 weekend, defea ng Sacramento State and Portland State. Sacramento State won the league a year ago, and was picked to finish third in the 2018 preseason poll. Portland State advanced to the semifinals in 2017 and is expected to get back there again, picked to finish fourth. On Thursday, the Grizzlies came from behind, overcoming an 0-2 deficit to knock off the defending champs. On Saturday, Montana basically led from start to finish, making clean work of the Vikings. This weekend meant the world to our program, Lawrence said. It was really, really rewarding to see our team go out and play to win. I got so much response from people who have been watching our program for many years who said we looked like we wanted to take charge of our matches, and that we weren t playing with any fear. That s something we ve been talking about, not only this preseason and this season but last year and all spring. To see that come into being right in front of our home crowd, it was a really special night. Now, the next test: the Cats. You can t go into Montana State saying it s just the same old game, Lawrence said. The emo on surrounding this rivalry is one of the most unique, coolest things you can be a part of, and it s a pure rivalry. Our emo ons are different for this match. The emo ons are different, but the key is to keep the focus the same. It s whether or not we choose to use our emo ons to focus on the same things that we always need Notes con nue on Page 3

3 NOTES 3 to focus on that is going to be the difference, Lawrence said. Griz-Cat is unique, and it s a different environment, but we have to execute the same. For the first me in a long me, Montana is visibly building momentum. Montana had one of its largest crowds in recent memory on Saturday, and Tuesday s rivalry match will be held inside Dahlberg Arena. It s a Maroon Out, with the first 150 students receiving free T-shirts and pizza. Addi onally, Montana is offering a buy-one-get-one-free cket offer. Montana s rivalry with Montana State dates back to 1975 its first year as a program and the two teams have played at least twice every year since. Montana has played and beaten the Cats more than any other opponent, and a win on Tuesday would even the all- me ledger at Just like the focus didn t change through early-season struggles, it hasn t changed a er a successful weekend. Regardless of Tuesday s result, that mantra will remain, as the Grizzlies get on a plane and travel south for their first conference road test of the season. Montana will play a strong Northern Colorado team on Thursday, and then, finally, a er four matches in eight days to begin Big Sky, it will get a breather. This doesn t mean we re going to have a winning streak and never lose a match again, but I think this weekend showed that we know what works and we know how to get there, and now we have to keep chipping away so the results con nue to come. WITH A WIN TUESDAY... A win Tuesday over Montana State would be significant on many levels: Montana would even the all- me series ledger at The series dates back to 1975, UM s first as a program, and has been played at least twice every year since then. Montana has more wins over Montana State than any other opponent. The Grizzlies would improve to 3-0 to begin Big Sky play for the first me since 2006, and just the second me in more than two decades. Montana would extend its winning streak to four matches, the longest since November Montana would run its home winning streak to four matches, the longest streak since Montana would match last year s conference win total for the en re season. PARTY LIKE IT S 2014 Montana had a good weekend overall, defea ng Sacramento State and Portland State to start Big Sky Conference play hot. Montana is 2-0 to open conference for the first me since Montana has won three consecu ve matches overall for the first me since Montana has won three home matches in a row, also for the first me since Mykaela Hammer was named the Big Sky Offensive Player of Week, UM s first honoree since Nearly 800 fans were in a endance for UM s match vs. Portland State, the largest crowd in the WAG since Sensing a theme? Montana is hoping it s a good omen. The Grizzlies have publicly stated their main goal is to get back to the Big Sky Conference tournament. If they re able to do so, it will be their first berth since HAMMER NAMED PLAYER OF THE WEEK Senior outside hi er was named the Big Sky Conference Offensive Player of the Week on Monday. Hammer averaged a double-double with 19.5 kills and 10.0 digs over two matches, doing so on at an impressive.443 efficiency. Her 4.88 kills-per-set average was nearly double the next-closest Grizzly. In a come-from-behind victory over Sacramento State, Hammer recorded a career-high 23 kills on.409 hi ng, eclipsing her previous high for kills on the final swing of the match. The Grizzlies found themselves trailing two sets to none, but closed the third set on a 10-5 run to extend the match. Hammer had three kills during that stretch. Trailing in the fourth set, Montana used a 9-4 run to take the lead. During that period, Hammer had four kills. The Grizzlies then scored three of the final four points to earn a advantage, with a pair of kills coming from Hammer. In the deciding fi h frame, the Grizzlies jumped out to a 5-0 lead and never trailed. Hammer had two kills during the 5-0 run, plus the final point of the match. Two nights later vs. Portland State, Hammer again led the Grizzlies, this me with 16 kills on.500 hi ng. The outside hi er also recorded three service aces. Montana jumped out to an 11-5 lead in the first set, with Hammer recording four kills and serving five points during the run. Leading by just one, 13-12, in the second set, Hammer had three consecu ve points a kill and back-to-back service aces to force a Vikings meout. She had seven kills, an ace and a block in Montana s Set-3 victory to seal the match. CELEBRATING ITS PAST For the first me in more than a decade, Montana hosted an alumni weekend, welcoming back 13 former players including All-Americans, school record-holders, conference champions and some of the top students and athletes in school history. That was one of the highlights of my whole coaching career, not just as a head coach, Lawrence said. The moment that the alumni saw each other, to see them and feel their energy and hear their stories was really special for me and for our team. The past and present Grizzlies ate dinner together last Friday night, reminiscing and sharing stories, in addi on to passing along advice to the younger group. The biggest thing was to see their rela onships now, Lawrence con nued. I don t think they talk very frequently; they have their own busy lives. But the way those bonds come back when they re in this environment I think made our team realize what the bigger picture is and what this is all about, which is who you are for your teammates. SETTING UP THE GRIZ Se er Ashley Watkins moved into 10th place in Montana history earlier this month with more than 1,800 career assists. Making the feat even more impressive, Watkins is just a junior, and she spent her freshman season hi ng during half of the team s rota ons. At her current pace, Watkins could finish

4 NOTES 4 her career near the top five in school history. NON-CONFERENCE COMPETITION Of the 12 teams Montana played in the preseason, four have either been na onally ranked or have received votes in the AVCA top-25 coaches poll this season. The Grizzlies challenged themselves by playing two teams from the Pac-12 and another from the Big 12, but all around, their opponents had success throughout the first month of the season. The combined non-conference winning percentage of Montana s 12 preseason opponents was.570 (81-61), with nine teams pos ng a.500 record or be er. HIGHLIGHTS FROM PRESEASON Montana earned victories over Gonzaga (3-2), UTEP (3-0) and South Dakota (3-2). Senior outside hi er Mykaela Hammer was named to the Montana Invita onal and Borderland Invita onal all-tournament teams. At the Roadrunner Classic, outside hi er Alexis Urbach and se er Ashley Watkins earned all-tournament honors. Montana out-blocked its opponents six mes during the preseason, averaging 2.1 blocks per set. Sophomore middle blocker Baily Permann has led the Grizzlies for blocking six mes. During a seven-match stretch from Aug. 31 through Sept. 14, Montana was out-dug just one me (in a victory at UTEP). The stretch featured three matches vs. top-30 opponents. Montana hit a season-best.229 in a five-set loss to New Mexico State. It marked the first me in more than a year that the Aggies, who now own a 16-match home win streak, had been pushed to five sets at home. The Grizzlies out-hit their opponents twice during the Borderland Invita onal, holding UTEP to.150 efficiency. The Grizzlies recorded more service aces than their opponents in each of the final two matches of non-conference play (CSU Bakersfield and South Dakota). Hammer recorded 20 kills vs. New Mexico State. She has led the Grizzlies for kills a team-high five mes this season. Junior outside hi er Missy Huddleston has recorded double-figure kill totals six mes, including 24 on.333 hit- ng in a five-set win over Gonzaga. Trailing in the fi h set, she had a kill and service ace to set up match point for Montana. She also has three double-doubles and has led UM in hi ng percentage a team-high four mes. Urbach had 21 kills on.390 hi ng vs. CSU Bakersfield and 16 kills at a.483 clip in the season opener against UC Riverside. She has led Montana for kills four mes this season. Watkins has four double-doubles and a team-high 12 service aces. Over the past four matches, freshman middle blocker Olivia Bradley is averaging 2.07 kills and 1.07 blocks per set. She has led the Grizzlies in blocking four mes this season. True freshman Sarina Moreno has started eight matches at libero, averaging 3.71 digs per set in those matches, including a career-high 20 vs. Gonzaga. She also has six service aces. During the Montana Invita onal, junior middle blocker Janna Grimsrud totaled 12 blocks over two matches. On the season she is averaging 1.50 blocks over 10 sets. Against New Mexico State, Montana used an 8-0 run to force a deciding fi h set. The Grizzlies and Aggies were ed at in the final frame before NMSU won the final two points. The Grizzlies learned how to close out ght sets late at UTEP. They led in the first set before winning two of the final three points. The two teams were kno ed at in Set 2, before Montana won the next two points. Tied at in the third set, the Grizzlies got back-to-back kills to seal the match. 5 SEARCHING FOR THE RIGHT LINEUP In 14 matches, Montana has used 12 different star ng-lineup combina- ons, not repea ng the same one un l the eighth match of the season. Se er Ashley Watkins and outside hi er Mykaela Hammer have started all 14 matches, while outside hi er Missy Huddleston has started 12. A SIGNATURE WIN A er a 0-5 start to the year, the Grizzlies earned a signature win over Gonzaga (Sept. 1), winning the first two sets before rallying in the fi h frame to win, In the deciding set, Montana trailed before scoring four of the next five points. NOTES 5 I think I jumped as high as I have since college, head coach Allison Lawrence said a er the match. I was very emo onal. We had players crying, we had coaches hugging. We re a program that has been starved for wins, and I want us to be so hungry that when that last ball falls, it s the feeling of coming up for air and all of your emo ons come pouring out. The result was even more important considering Gonzaga is one of Montana s regional recrui ng rivals. HANGING WITH THE BEST Montana knew the challenge would be steep, facing a pair of top-30 teams na onally. The Grizzlies were up for the challenge, however. Despite losing in straight sets to both Utah and Iowa State (Aug. 31), Montana showed fight, and pushed the Power-5 teams in many sets. Against No. 22 Utah, the Grizzlies jumped out to an early lead and forced the Utes to call meout first. Montana led by as many as three points, and as late as In the third set, Montana was within a single point, 15-14, midway through the frame. Montana was even be er against Iowa State. In the second set, the Grizzlies led by as many as seven points, 15-8, and were ed at The two teams were kno ed at in Set 3, before Iowa State again closed the set on a run.

6 NOTES 6 SARINA S DEBUT Freshman Sarina Moreno, who did not travel with the team to Montana s first tournament in California, made her collegiate debut during the second set vs. Utah (Aug. 31). She had six digs vs. the Utes, and has con nued to find her comfortability. In her 10 starts, the libero has averaged 3.79 digs per set, in addi on to eight service aces. COMING HOME Montana played a home match in the month of August for the first me since 2014, hos ng the four-team Montana Invita onal (Aug. 31-Sept. 1). A year ago, Montana played its first 15 matches away from home, playing its own gym for the first me on Sept. 28. RANKED FOES IN MISSOULA For just the fourth me ever, and the first me in 15 years, a na onally ranked volleyball team played in Missoula. The Grizzlies hung tough with No. 22 Utah, leading by as many as three points in the first set, and as late as WE RE (ALL) BACK! The 2017 season was a rebuilding year, with a new head coach and zero seniors on roster. But the Grizzlies made promising strides a year ago, and now have the benefit of returning every sta s cal leader. In fact, every player who earned a start in 2017 is back. Returning Produc on Kills: 99.9% Blocks: 99.5% Assists: 95.7% Service Aces: 83.6% Digs: 81.6% UM HOSTING RANKED TEAMS Date Opponent Result Oct. 14, 1994 #19 Idaho W, 3-2 Sept. 27, 2002 #22 EWU L, 3-0 Sept. 6, 2003 #11 UCLA L, 3-0 Aug. 31, 2018 #22 Utah L, 3-0 TRENDING UP The Grizzlies saw a threewin improvement during Allison Lawrence s first season as head coach. Even more impressive, UM improved in every sta s cal category from 2016 to 2017, including a 40-percent increase in blocking (132-spot improvement na onally). It was a similar trend in Big Sky Conference play, with Montana improving its ranking in hi ng percentage, opponent hi ng, assists, kills, blocks and service aces. WELCOME TO UM In addi on to returning nearly every contributor from 2017, the Grizzlies also added five freshmen to their roster. The newcomers made an immediate impact during fall camp, with Lawrence praising each of them for what they brought to the court TO 2017 COMPARISON Hi ng Percentage 2016:.117 (316th in NCAA) 2017:.164 (278th in NCAA; +38 spots) Opponent Hi ng Percentage 2016:.245 (304th) 2017:.227 (262nd; +42 spots) Assists 2016: (294th) 2017: (206th; +88 spots) Kills 2016: (299th) 2017: (220th; +79 spots) Blocks 2016: 1.42 (311th) 2017: 1.99 (179th; +132 spots) Service Aces 2016: 0.99 (290th) 2017: 1.08 (245th; +45 spots) Digs 2016: (239th) 2017: (166th; +73 spots) Olivia (Bradley) is fast and she thinks on her feet, Lawrence said of the Nampa, Idaho, na ve. When she doesn t know what she s supposed to be doing which is rare she kind of pushes through it and grinds it out. Bradley made two starts during her opening weekend, leading the team with five blocks vs. Akron (Aug. 25). She has played in 12 of UM s 14 matches (eight starts), and is averaging 1.51 kills and 0.81 blocks per set. Montana s other freshmen are outside hi er Elsa Godwin (Missoula, Mont.), defensive specialist Sarina Moreno (Missoula, Mont.), defensive specialist Kelsey Nestegard (Pullman, Wash.) and se er Casey S tes (Bozeman, Mont.). Moreno has started at libero each of Montana s last 10 matches. LOOKING AHEAD A er four matches over an eight-day period to begin conference play, Montana will get a breather. The Grizzlies will next play at Southern Utah (Oct. 4) and Northern Arizona (Oct. 6).
