Riley served two seasons at Montana State and posted an overall mark of 8-41 and saw the Bobcats jump up 45 spots in the NCAA Division I RPI during his tenure with a roster comprised mainly of sophomore and freshmen. Jones served as an assistant coach to Riley in both 2015 and Jones came to Bozeman following a stint as an assistant at Utah Valley, where he also served as recruiting coordinator. Jones spent four seasons at Utah from 2010 to 2013, first serving as video and statistics coordinator, before moving into operations. A native of New Zealand, Jones also has coaching experience with USA Volleyball. He served as an assistant coach in USA Volleyball s A2 program, which worked with the top collegiate players in the nation. Both marks are impressive considering MSU finished 5-20 overall. The Cats ranked ahead of programs like Notre Dame, Alabama and Oklahoma. The Bobcats return five starters and its libero from its starting rotation that played in the final match of the season against Idaho on Nov. 12. Returning to the starting rotation are Katie Rutecki, Kiana Black, Natalie Passeck, Audra Dugan, Chase Doughty and libero Allyssa Rizzo. Black, Passeck, Dugan and Doughty accounted for 56 percent of MSU s kill total last fall. In addition, Rizzo, Passeck and Rutecki were the Bobcats top three in digs, respectively. Black and Dugan paced MSU at the net leading the team in blocking. First-year head coach Daniel Jones will look to lead the Bobcats to the Big Sky Conference Tournament for just the second time in the last 12 years this fall. MSU s last winning season in Big Sky Conference play came in 2004 when the Bobcats posted a 10-4 league slate. THAT WAS THE WEEK THAT WAS: Montana State held on 21-25, 25-17, 25-19, 24-26, 15-9 win over Gonzaga on Saturday for its first victory first under Head Coach Daniel Jones. Natalie Passeck paced the Bobcats with 17 kills, while Chase Doughty and Evi Wilson each posted career-highs with 14 kills. In addition, Wilson recorded her first career double-double adding a career-high 11 digs. Sydney Mathison notched a double-double with a career-high 50 assists and 11 digs. Defensively, White and Doughty each posted career-bests with eight and seven blocks, respectively. Allyssa Rizzo guided MSU with 15 digs. Friday night, Passeck and Doughty notched 13 and 12 kills, respectively, but it wasn t enough as Big Ten foe Illinois held on for a 25-17, 22-25, 25-9, win. Mathison had 35 assists and seven digs, while Rizzo posted a team-best ten digs. A late MSU rally fell short as Air Force held on for a 25-17, 25-23, 18-25, win in the season-opener for both squads on Friday afternoon. Passeck paced MSU with nine kills, while Kiana Black added four kills, four blocks and a career-high five aces.

5 SERVING NOTICE: The Bobcats did an outstanding job serving the ball in the opening weekend of the season. MSU served-up 21 aces in the three matches, averaging 1.62 per set. The mark is the fourth best in the Big Sky Conference and ranks 74th in the nation. Its 21 total aces ranks 33rd in the country. Individually, true freshman Alexis Goroski s eight aces were the 12th best total in the nation in the opening weekend of action at the NCAA Division I level. Her.62 aces per game is second best in the league and ranks 43rd overall. Senior Kiana Black also had a good weekend from the endline with seven aces, which is 22nd in the nation, while her.54 aces per set ranks 100th overall. BLOCK PARTY: Montana State averaged 2.00 blocks per game during the Bobcat Classic. The mark is sixth best in the Big Sky after the opening weekend. MSU s best block party came in its win over Gonzaga as the Cats out-blocked the Zags Freshman Kelsie Whiter posted a career-best eight blocks, while junior Chase Doughty registered a career-high 7 block assists. Sophomore setter Sydney Mathison also posted a career-best with six block assists, while Kiana Black added five. White s 1.08 blocks per set ranks ninth in the league. Illinois, who left the Bobcat Classic with a perfect 3-0 record, finished the weekend as the nation s best blocking team, averaging 4.20 per set. The Fighting Illini s Ali Bastianelli ranks first in the country averaging 2.50 bps. HELLO, MY NAME IS : Thirteen of MSU s 16 players on its roster have been in the program for two years or less. This season, the Bobcats welcomed six freshmen. Only three players (Kiana Black, Natalie Passeck and Chase Doughty) remain on the roster from the 2015 campaign, which was the first under then head coach JJ Riley and top assistant (now head) coach Daniel Jones. DIGGING IT: Sophomore libero Allyssa Rizzo, along with defensive specialists and freshmen Alexis Goroski and Libby Christensen, accounted for half of MSU s digs last weekend. The threesome averaged 4.69 saves per game - led by Rizzo at 2.77 per set. BLACK AND WHITE: Montana State middle blockers - senior Kiana Black and freshman Kelsie White - had an outstanding opening weekend for the Bobcats. The duo combined for 32 kills (2.46 kps) and 26 blocks (2.00), while hitting.183 from the field. Black, a native of Wenatchee, Wash., also added seven service aces, including a career-high five aces against Air Force. She had her best hitting outing of the Bobcat Classic against Gonzaga with eight kills. White, a product of Layton, Utah, guided MSU defensively, averaging 1.08 blocks per set. SETTING STANDARDS: Sophomore Sydney Mathison received the starting nod for the Bobcats over the weekend. The Phoenix, Arizona product played in all 13 sets and averaged 8.92 assists per game. Mathison registered a career-high 50 assists in MSU s 3-2 win over Gonzaga. She also notched 11 digs for her fourth career double-double. In addition, Mathison posted a careerhigh six blocks and had three aces to knock off the Bulldogs. PINTEREST: For most of the Bobcat Classic last weekend, juniors Natalie Passeck and Chase Doughty, along with sophomore Evi Wilson, manned the pins. Passeck led all MSU outside hitters averaging 3.00 kills per set, while Doughty chipped in 2.67 and Wilson 2.00 per contest. In Montana State s win over Gonzaga, Passeck paced the Cats with 17 kills, while Doughty and Wilson each notched a career-high 14 kills. Wilson, a native of Vancouver, Wash., also tallied her first career double-double with 11 digs. Doughty, a product of Pleasant View, Utah, logged a career-best seven block assists in the win, as well. SKY HIGH - BIG SKY CONFERENCE NOTES: The preseason coaches poll picked North Dakota to repeat as Big Sky champions and the Fighing Hawks look determined to meet that expecation. UND swept through competition at the Ole Miss-hosted Rebel Invitational with a 4-0 record. North Dakota even topped the host, digging themselves out of a 2-0 deficit to win the match 3-2. UND picked up its first loss of the season on Sunday, falling to Georgia Tech 3-0. Sacramento State nabbed a 3-1 record over the opening weekend at the Jack Kaiser Volleyball Classic, beating UConn, Holy Cross and New Hampshire. Their only defeat came at the hands of tournament host, St. John s. First-year head coach, Allison Lawrence saw Montana record a 2-1 mark over the weekend at the North Texas Tournament. The Grizzlies defeated UTEP and Tulsa before faltering to North Texas. Portland State got off to a 2-1 start at the San Diego State-hosted Aztec Invitational. PSU topped Cal State Northridge and Eastern Kentucky before losing to San Diego State. Idaho State s Chloe Hirst and Haylie Keck saw the Bengals get off to a 1-2 start. Hirst notched 50 kills and Keck tallied 39 digs over the weekend. Northern Arizona s first match of the season proved to be one of the most intense thus far. After digging themselves into a 2-0 hole, the Jacks rattled off three straight sets to seal the victory over Southern Illinois. Eastern Washington posted a 1-2 record this past weekend. Ashley Seiler recorded a career-high 28 kills for the Eagles in their match against Binghamton. Weber State went 0-3 to start the season, but their team block average tops the league at 3.00/set.
