WSU UP ONE SPOT IN AVCA COACHES POLL WSU enters the week now ranked 22nd overall in the latest AVCA Division I Coaches Poll. The Cougars move up one spot from a week ago after remaining undefeated on the year, downing McNeese State, Illinois State, and Stony Brook in the Cougar Challenge. MIMS RECORDS 1000 CAREER KILLS Senior Taylor Mims continued her offensive dominance, as she has throughout her WSU tenure, totaling over 1,000 career kills Saturday against Stony Brook. Mims is now just the 14th Cougar Volleyball player to reach this feat in the program s history, and she currently sits at 1,004 kills heading into the WKU Tournament weekend. URIAS NAMED COUGAR CHALLENGE MVP The senior middle blocker earned Most Valuable Player honors after helping lead the nationally ranked Cougars to three victories over this past weekend. Jocelyn totaled 35 kills in three match-ups, 18 of which came against Illinois State, a new career-high for the Tijuana, Mexico native. She also went on to record a.561 overall attack percentage, three service aces, 8.0 total blocks, and eight digs throughout the tournament. DIRIGE LEADING THE PAC-12 IN DIGS PER SET The junior libero is currently ranked first overall in the Pac-12 in digs per set with 4.83 this season. Alexis jumped in the statistics after totally 45 overall digs, and 5.00 digs per set in the Cougar Challenge Tournament this past weekend, as she helped anchor the defense to three home victories. She posted back-to-back matches with 18 total digs against Illinois State, and Stony Brook as well. UPCOMING WSU VOLLEYBALL SCHEDULE The Cougars will compete next in the Western Kentucky University Tounrament, Friday through Saturday, September WSU will take on Northern Illinois, and Western Kentucky on Friday, and then face East Tennessee State the following Saturday. This will be the first ever meeting between WSU and Western Kentucky, and will also be the first match-up against East Tennessee State. The Cougars hold a 2-0 advantage over the Huskies of Northern Illinois entering the weekend as well. As a junior, she was the Cougars statistical leader, leading WSU to its second consecutive NCAA Championship Tournament Second Round appearance. Mims 4.17 kills per set and 4.75 points per set, both sixth-best in Pac-12, are 30th and 26th, respectively, in NCAA. She had 28 kills and 79 attacks in the 3-1 win NCAA First Round win over Florida State to lead all players in the 2017 NCAA tournament. In that same match Mims also had a career-high 22 digs and 31.5 points. Her 599 points in 2017 was 12th-best in the NCAA. During the Pac-12 season, Mims 4.38 kills per set and 4.95 points per set were both are second-best in conference. BACK-TO-BACK NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP APPEARANCES The Cougars made their second consecutive appearance at the NCAA Championship Tournament under WSU Head Coach Jen Greeny...it was the 12th trip to the NCAA Tournament for the WSU volleyball program...greeny played for the Cougars in the NCAA Tournament (1995, 96, 97) and was an assistant coach for WSU s appearances in 2000, 01 and 02). MIMS NAMED GLOBAL CHALLENGE MVP Dominating the competition at the Global Challenge in Croatia, rising senior,taylor Mims took home tournament Most Valuable Player honors at the conclusion of the tournament after leading the US Collegiate National Team-Europe to the gold medal. Mims, alongside of Cougar teammate Alexis Dirige, led the US team to a third-straight title after defeating the Mountain West Conference All- Stars, 3-0, in the championship game. BACK AND BETTER THAN EVER The Cougars return a veteran squad that is coming off back-to-back NCAA Championship tournament Second Round appearances and returns 10 letterwinners. Six seniors dot the roster for the Cougars including outside hitter Taylor Mims who is fresh off an MVP performance for the US Collegiate National Team-Europe at the Global Challenge in Croatia. In 2017, Mims was named to the 2017 All-Pac-12 Volleyball First Team and to the PrepVolleyball.com and VolleyballMag.com All-America Honorable Mention teams. She was a team co-captain and the Cougars statistical leader with 4.17 kills per set and 4.75 points per set, both sixth-best in Pac-12, 30th and 26th in NCAA. In addition to Mims, the Cougars return nearly their entire starting lineup from a season ago with McKenna Woodford, Claire Martin, Jocelyn Urias, and Ella Lajos give WSU a potent attack to rival any team in the nation. In the back, Alexis Dirige, upped her game yet another level over the summer as she won gold, alongside of Mims, in Croatia as Team USA s libero. The junior was the fastest player in program history to reach 1,000 digs last season. TAYLOR MIMS NAMED ALL-AMERICA & FIRST TEAM ALL-PAC-12 WSU then-junior outside hitter Taylor Mims (Billings, Mont.) was named to the 2017 All-Pac-12 Volleyball First Team as well as PrepVolleyball.com and VolleyballMag. com All-America Honorable Mention...Mims, a 6-3 outside hitter from Billings, Mont., led the NCAA-bound Cougars and was fifth-best in the Pac-12 in kills with a 4.10 per set average and in points with a 4.65 per set average...in NCAA standings, Mims was 16th in total attacks with 1,408, 18th in points with , 19th in total kills with 488, 24th in attacks per set at 11.83, 28th in points per set with 4.69 pps, and 35th in kills per set at 4.10 kps. FOUR COUGS ATTEND US NATIONAL TRYOUTS Four Washington State University volleyball players will be among the 234 athletes from 89 colleges to participate in the three-day open tryouts for the U.S. Women s National Team, U.S. Collegiate National Teams and U.S. Women s Junior National Team at the U.S. Olympic Training Center (USOTC) in Colorado Springs. Cougars participating in the tryouts were Claire Martin, Taylor Mims, Ashley Brown and Alexis Dirige. VOLLEYBALL IN EUROPE WSU took a 10-day tour of Europe May 16-27, where the Cougars trained and competed against foreign opponents while also visiting historical sites and cultural landmarks in four countries. Among the stops for the Cougars were: Graz, Austria; Moribor, Slovenia; Pula and other cities in Croatia; Venice, Desenzano di Garda, Milan and Lake Como in Italy.
