2 Coaching Staff Mike Schwob Head Coach 11th Season Mike Schwob enters his 11th season as head coach of the Navy women's volleyball team, his 12th year with the program and his 19th season at the Naval Academy. During his decade as the program s mentor Navy posted three seasons with at least 20 victories, tallied a overall record and a Patriot League record and totaled 18 allleague certificates. Schwob coached the Mids to their second-straight 21-win season last year, as well as to a Division I best winning percentage of.724 (21-8). Navy also posted a school-best 10-4 record during the Patriot League season to earn the No. 2 seed in the league tournament, the highest postseason seeding by the program in six years. For the team s efforts, Schwob was selected as Navy s 2005 Fall Coach of the Year. Schwob originally joined the Navy women s staff in 1995 as an assistant coach after working with the men s program for seven seasons. He was elevated to head coach the following year and led the Mids to a winning Patriot League season during his inaugural campaign. Over the next two years he would garner league coach-of-the-year honors in 1997 and lead the Mids to their first overall winning season in five years in Schwob s fourth season of 1999 would prove to be one of the program s best. Navy recorded 21 wins that years and, with a school-record nine league victories, entered the postseason as the top-seeded team in the Patriot League for the first time. The Mids would close the season by reaching the title match of the league tournament for the second time in Schwob s initial four years. With many of the standouts from the 1999 season gone, Schwob guided a 2000 squad with a lineup of two returning starters, a sophomore setter, two starters who had never played on the collegiate level and one who did not play the previous year to double-digit victories. Only one starter returned from that 2000 team the following year as the Mids were tabbed to place seventh in the 2001 league preseason poll. Despite that initial ranking, Navy would end the season in fifth place in the league and missed returning to the postseason by one victory. Navy would climb even closer to the playoffs in 2002, one which saw the Mids tally eight league victories and 17 wins on the entire season. Navy ended the year tied for fourth place in the Patriot League, but missed the playoffs due to the league tiebreaker system. After again placing fifth and narrowly missing the postseason during the 2003 campaign, Navy broke through in 2004 by tying for third place in the Patriot League with an 8-6 league record and totaling a 21-9 overall mark. While team success is most important to Schwob, his players have consistently been recognized for their individual achievements, as well, totaling 18 all-league certificates during his tenure. Among the standouts he has coached are Rachel Shropa, who was honored as both the league s rookie ( 96) and offensive player of the year ( 97), and Jen Williams, who became the first player in league history to earn both offensive ( 98) and defensive ( 99) player-of-the-year accolades during her career. Both players were named to the league's all-decade team in the fall of Schwob first arrived at the Naval Academy as an assistant for the men s team in 1989, then became the team s head coach two years later. He guided the Mids to a record in three varsity seasons before leading the team to a top-10 national ranking on the club level over his next two campaigns. He returned to the men's game during the summer of 2001 when he coached the All-Navy Team to victory at the United States Armed Forces Championship in Honolulu, Hawai'i, in December 2003 when he served as an assistant coach for the All-Armed Forces Teams at the World Military games in Italy, and as the head coach of the All-Navy team in 2005 and 06. A native of Buffalo, N.Y., Schwob received his bachelor's degree in education from George Mason in A standout volleyball player himself, Schwob was a four-year letterwinner and played on NCAA Final Four teams in 1985 and 88. He captained George Mason s 88 squad as a senior and earned All-East District honors during his last two seasons. He also competed at the 1985 Olympic Sports Festival. Schwob earned his master s degree in administration from Loyola in 1995 and taught elementary school in Anne Arundel County for eight years. His wife, Susan, was an All-ACC volleyball standout at Maryland. Mike and Susan are the parents of four boys William (9), Robert (7), Brian (6) and Michael (2). 3 Coaching Staff Malia Witherspoon Assistant Coach Seventh Season Heidi Mass Assistant Coach First Season Megan Vehovic Vol. Assistant Coach First Season Malia Witherspoon begins her seventh season as a member of the Navy coaching staff this fall. A native of Cranford, N.J., Witherspoon is a 1999 graduate of Morgan State where she was a four-year letterwinner for the Lady Bears. She led Morgan State in blocking during her senior year, while also knocking down 2.2 kills per game and hitting.310 on the season. The middle blocker helped lead Morgan State to a conference championship and a berth in the 1997 NCAA Tournament. After graduating from Morgan State, Witherspoon served as an assistant coach at Towson for one year before arriving at the Naval Academy in the summer of Witherspoon, who currently holds the rank of Lieutenant Junior Grade (Lt. j.g.) as an officer in the Navy as part of the service s fleet support officer program, has competed for the All-Navy volleyball team in 2003 (gold), 04 and 05 (gold). Malia and her husband, Michael, became parents in April with the birth of their son, Omari. Heidi Mass, joined the Navy coaching staff during the 2006 spring season as the program s second assistant coach. Mass has been a successful coach on the collegiate, high school and club levels. After lettering for four years at Penn State, she began her coaching career in 1989 as the head coach for the New Kensington-Arnold School District in Pennsylvania. She then served as the head coach at Johns Hopkins from After several years out of coaching, she returned to the sideline as an assistant coach at Northern High School in Maryland. During her initial season of 2001, the team won the state title. Mass has also coached with the All-Navy program during multiple summers. She and her husband, Lou, are the parents of three children, son Zane and daughters Shelby and Chandler. Recent Naval Academy graduate Megan Vehovic will serve as the program s volunteer assistant coach during the 2006 season. Vehovic, who holds the rank of Ensign, earned a trio of letters as a four-year member of the volleyball team. During her final season she ranked third on the team in digs per game (2.38 dpg) and fourth in total digs (228). Her rankings improved during the Patriot League season to second in both total digs (153) and digs per game (2.78 dpg). Vehovic appeared in over 300 matches during her career, while tallying 539 digs (1.80 dpg) and 54 service aces (.178 sapg). Vehovic made her first appearance as a member of the All-Navy Team last spring, helping the service to a second-place showing against the other branches of the military. An international relations major during her days as a midshipman, Vehovic service selected Navy surface warfare and will report to the USS Tarawa in December. 4 2006 Season Outlook Non-League Opponents We have a very ambitious non-league schedule ahead of ourselves, said Navy head coach Mike Schwob. We will be facing a number of talented teams from across the country, but I feel these teams will better prepare ourselves for the challenges we will face during the Patriot League season. Patriot League Outlook The league saw a number of very talented young players contribute to teams throughout the league last season, said Schwob. After gaining a great deal of experience during the spring season and summer training period, they have only improved. It will once again be a very balanced league this season. I think with American being pushed more last season, teams are playing at a higher level on a more consistent basis and are continuing to gain ground on American. Every match, both home and away, will be as competitive as ever. Returning Players Letterwinners Returning / Lost 7 / 5 Starters Returning / Lost 4 /2 + Libero We have a very good core of players returning from last season, said Schwob. We will miss a strong class of seniors from last year, but our returning players gained valuable experience both during the 2005 fall and 2006 spring seasons. It is a great luxury to have so many key components of our success back again this fall. New Players Newcomers 8 We brought in a great deal of size this fall, said Schwob. In addition to their size, I feel this is a very mature group of freshmen which will only help their learning curve. I look for our new players to not only contest for playing time right from the start of the season, but also help us maintain our high level of play. Defensive Players Players Lost Megan Vehovic 2.38 dpg Andrea Wernecke 2.73 dpg Returning Players Aimee Burns 1.17 dpg Lizzie Grider 0.57 dpg Karla Lazenby 0.96 dpg New Players Chelsea Reidy We lost two seniors at this position last year, but we return three which provides us some stability, said Schwob. Add in our new players and I feel our passing game will pick up right where it ended last season. Outside/Right Side Hitters Players Lost Jacqui Ludeman 1.20 kpg,.182, 0.43 dpg Ashley Musser 2.74 kpg,.195, 1.78 dpg Returning Players Rachel Dougherty 2.15 kpg,.278, 0.86 bpg Nikki England 1.79 kpg,.143, 0.96 dpg Jessie Sims 2.30 kpg,.224, 3.44 dpg New Players Brittany Bolton Barbara Beal Krista Eschelman Aubrey Manes Abbie Merkl We will have to determine who will be hitting from the left and who will be on the right, said Schwob. Regardless of who we place out there, we expect to have a very balanced attack on the two sides. Our new players add some height and athleticism to an already deep group of returning players. Middle Blockers Players Lost Katie Erwin 0.82 kpg,.110, 0.61 bpg Returning Players Megan Boyd 1.77 kpg,.223, 1.14 bpg Alexa Gibbs 1.00 kpg,.312, 0.50 bpg Beth McArthur 3.12 kpg,.337, 1.10 bpg New Players Taylor Lee We return both of our starting middle blockers from last season in Beth and Megan, which makes us very solid at the position, said Schwob. Both Beth and Megan are capable of playing all six rotations and being offensive threats no matter where they are on the court. Setters Players Lost Ashley Musser 6.59 apg, 1.78 dpg Returning Players Mariellen Carnes 4.11 apg, 1.22 dpg Kim Koss 4.24 apg, 1.51 dpg Marissa Watson 3.43 apg, 0.86 dpg New Players Meredith Biri We have a void to fill with the loss of Ashley, but the players at this position comprise a very hard-working, experienced group, said Schwob. We are confident in their combined abilities to run our offense NAVY VOLLEYBALL 2005 First-Team All-Patriot League performer Beth McArthur. What s Returning? 21 Season Highlights Navy totaled 21 victories for the second-straight year, the most wins by the program during a two-year period on the varsity level. Navy posted a 10-4 record in the Patriot League to receive the No. 2 seed in the league tournament. The 10 league wins were a school record, while the.714 winning percentage in league matches was the third highest by the Mids. Navy s No. 2 seed was the highest since the Mids entered the 1999 postseason as the top-seeded team. Navy was the lone school to finish two places higher than it was predicted to in the league pre-season poll. Navy won both regular season matches vs. Army. The Mids defeated Air Force in Colorado Springs for the first time in school history. After playing only one five-game match during the 2004 season, Navy played a school-record nine fivegame matches in 2005 (5-4 record). In three matches, Navy forced a fifth game after dropping the first two games of a match, with the Mids winning two of those matches. Ashley Musser became the first Mid on the Division I level to lead Navy in both kills and assists on the season. Musser also set the school record with 212 career service aces. Ashley Musser and Beth McArthur both garnered First-Team All-Patriot League honors, the first time in six years two Mids received first-team accolades during the same year. Rachel Dougherty was selected to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America District 2 Second Team, as voted on by the College Sports Information Directors of America. Dougherty had posted a 3.65 cumulative GPA as a physics major at the time of the voting (October, 2005). Jessie Sims hauled in a freshman record 389 digs on the year, the third-highest total of any Mid in school history. Megan Boyd s 126 blocks on the year tied for the second-highest total in school history, with Beth McArthur s 112 blocks placing her fifth. Both players also finished among the top-five Mids in single-season blocks per game. Ashley Musser was awarded the Vice Adm. Lawrence Sword, presented to the woman of the graduating class declared by the Association's Athletic Committee to have personally excelled in athletics during her years of varsity competition. She becomes just the third volleyball player to have won the sword and the first since Cheryl Dolyniuk in Andrea Wernecke was awarded the Coaches Calvert Award for Women, presented by the Naval Academy Athletic Association to the varsity letterwinnner of the graduating class selected by the varsity coaches as having persevered the most in his or her career. 32 The United States Naval Academy 2006 NAVY VOLLEYBALL ANNAPOLIS The City of Annapolis has been home to the Naval Academy for all but four years since the founding of the school in 1845 on the grounds of what originally was the Army s Fort Severn. The Academy moved its location to Newport, Rhode Island, from during the Civil War. ANCHORS AWEIGH Anchors Aweigh was written by Lt. Charles Zimmerman, musical director of the Naval Academy, in 1906, with the lyrics provided by Alfred H. Miles 06 as a fight song for the 1907 graduating class. The song made its debut at the 1906 Army-Navy game and when the Mids won, the song became traditional at the contest. BANCROFT HALL Named after the former Secretary of the Navy ( ) and founder of the Naval Academy George Bancroft, Bancroft Hall serves as the dormitory for the entire Brigade of Midshipmen. Its 33 acres of floor space and nearly five miles of hallways makes it one of the largest dorms in the world. BRIGADE OF MIDSHIPMEN The 4,000-member student body at the Naval Academy is called the Brigade of Midshipmen. The Brigade is organized into... 2 regiments 6 battalions 30 companies BILL THE GOAT The first recorded use of a goat as the mascot for Navy teams was in 1893 when an animal named El Cid (the Chief) was presented to the Brigade by officers of the USS New York. El Cid helped Navy to a 6-4 win over Army that year and a goat became the permanent mascot of the Academy in CO-ED Women were first admitted to the Naval Academy during the summer of Today, women comprise roughly 15 percent of the student body. COMMISSIONED OFFICERS When a student graduates from the Naval Academy, they have the option to enter either the Navy or the Marine Corps as an officer. If they choose to join the Navy, they are commissioned as Ensigns, while those entering the Marine Corps are given the rank of Second Lieutenant. JOHN PAUL JONES The crypt of John Paul Jones, considered America s first naval leader leader and hero, is located below the Naval Academy Chapel. The native of Scotland was born in 1747, and travelled to the colonies to assist America during the Revolutionary War. His ship never lost a battle as he reached a rank of captain in the Continental Navy. Jones died in 1792 in Paris, France, and was buried there. His remains were returned to the United States in 1905 and he was interred at the Naval Academy eight years later. MARINE CORPS Those officers entering the Marine Corps have the choice of service selecting one of the following fields... Aviation -- air command and control, anti-air warfare, aviation maintenance, aviation supply, pilot, naval flight officer. Ground -- armor*, artillery*, communications (information systems), engineering, financial management, infantry*, logistics, military police (* = not available to women) BLUE & GOLD Now, colleges from sea to sea May sing of colors true; But who has better right than we To hoist a symbol hue? For sailors brave in battle fair, Since fighting days of old, Have proved the sailor s right to wear The Navy Blue and Gold Four years together by the bay, Where severn joins the tide, Then by the service called away We re scattered far and wide; But still when two or three shall meet And old tales be retold From low to highest in the fleet We ll pledge the Blue and Gold. CLASS RANKS First-year students at the Naval Academy are referred to as plebes during their initial or Fourth Class year in school, while sophomores at Navy, members of the Third Class, are called youngsters. Juniors at the school are designated as Second Class, with seniors called Firsties in reference to their First Class year. 32 UNITED STATES NAVAL ACADEMY

33 The United States Naval MIDSHIPMAN The original 17th Century meaning of the word midshipsmen designated those men who stood watch amidships, or in the middle portion of a ship. The middle s was later dropped to give the current form of the word. Midshipmen were originally young boys who were apprenticed to sea captains to learn the trade. In the early days of the Navy, midshipmen were trained aboard ship until they were commissioned as ensigns. NAVY Graduates of the Naval Academy entering the Navy have the following service options available to them... Aviation -- flight officer, pilot Nuclear Propulsion -- ships, submarines* Restricted Line and Staff Corps -- civil engineering, cryptology, intelligence, maintenance, medicine, meteorology/oceanography, supply Special Operations -- explosive ordinance disposal, explosive ordinance management, mine countermeasures, operational diving and salvage, Navy SEALs* Surface Warfare -- conventional, nuclear powered Submarines* (* = not available to women) NICKNAME The official nickname for all of Navy s athletic teams is Midshipmen. Mids is an appropriate nickname, while Middie is inappropriate. N-STAR Members of varsity teams who qualify for the varsity letter receive an N-Star for their letter sweaters if they participate in a victory over Army in any sport-designated Star Game. The varsity N and corresponding N-Star were initiated during the early 1890s. SCHOOL COLORS Each class at the Naval Academy produced their own set of class colors until 1892 when Navy Blue and Gold were established as the official colors for the entire Naval Academy. SUMMER TRAINING Summers remain a busy and challenging time of year for midshipmen. Their initial tenure at the Naval Academy begins around July 1 prior to the start of the freshman year at the school with Plebe Summer. Instead of taking academic classes, plebes receive military indoctrination and learn basic seamanship and sailing. The summer following plebe year is spent aboard various ships to gain knowledge and experience of the workings of the Navy. Included in this time is a three-week cruise aboard either a 44-foot Naval Academy sailboat or a Yard Patrol craft traveling on the East Coast. Portions of the summer before the start of a second-class year is spent visiting bases of both the Navy and the Marine Corps. That leads up to the next summer when midshipmen join an operational unit of the Navy or Marine Corps for several weeks. In addition, rising firsties also begin to accept leadership roles at either the Naval Academy for plebe summer, the Naval Academy Prep School (Newport, R.I.) or aboard a yard patrol or sailing cruise. TECUMSEH Tecumseh is the Native American figurehead which has been facing Bancroft Hall since The statue originally was the figurehead of the USS Delaware and named after Tamanend, a Delaware chief. Tecumseh is painted prior to football games and during Commissioning Week he is adorned with the shoulder boards of a Navy ensign on one side and that of a Marine Corps second lieutenant on the other. 34 One of the challenges we continue to face is helping our children understand the importance of education and helping them realize that lofty goals are attainable. With an increasing number of collegiate athletes dropping out of school early to pursue lucrative contracts in the professional arena, we are left with the question who are our children s role models? At the United States Naval Academy, the Midshipmen have to balance the rigorous requirements of education, athletics and basic military training. With Navy athletes competing at the Division I level, the demands of their sports heighten the importance of maintaining solid grades. Navy is one of the few Division I schools in which all athletes must meet stringent academic expectations. This is what makes our Midshipmen such tremendous role models, successfully maintaining that balance between athletics and academics at a highly competitive level. The Naval Academy Athletic Association works with local schools to expose youth to the Midshipmen, with the hope of providing a lasting impression. Typically, in assembly style, the Midshipmen speak to the students about life at the Academy, the experiences of competing in Division I athletics and what they ve learned while at Navy, in addition to answering the multitude of questions that the students have. 34

35 The Patriot League Today s Scholar-Athletes, Tomorrow s Leaders American University Bucknell University Colgate University College of the Holy Cross Lafayette College Lehigh University United States Military Academy United States Naval Academy Executive Director: Carolyn Schlie Femovich 3773 Corporate Pkwy., Ste. 190, Center Valley, PA Phone: (610) The Patriot League continually demonstrates that student-athletes can excel at both academics and athletics without sacrificing its high standards. The Patriot League s athletic success is achieved while its member institutions remain committed to its founding principle of admitting and graduating student-athletes that are academically representative of their class. In its second decade of combining academic and athletic excellence, the Patriot League sponsors championships in 23 men s and women s sports. Initially started as an NCAA Division I-AA football conference in 1986, the Patriot League became an all-sport conference in 1990 and includes American, Army, Bucknell, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehigh and Navy as full members, and Fordham and Georgetown as associate members. These institutions are among the oldest and most prestigious in the nation and their alumni have, and continue to play leadership roles in shaping our country. Since 1998, the Patriot League has ranked first each year among all Division I conferences awarding athletic aid in the NCAA Graduation Rate Report. In addition, the Patriot League finished first in the new NCAA Academic Progress Report (APR) among all Division I conferences awarding athletic aid (combining with all eight of its full-time member institutions for an average of 984 out of 1,000). The APR is used to measure academic eligibility, retention and graduation of student-athletes. Patriot League student-athletes and teams continue to enjoy success at the national level, with opening round victories coming in several NCAA Championships, including consecutive wins in men s basketball, a final four appearance in men s lacrosse and a sixth-place finish at the NCAA Cross Country Championship. The Patriot League s mission is simple, to provide successful competitive athletic experiences while maintaining high academic standards, and to prepare its student-athletes to be leaders in society. During the year, Patriot League student-athletes and teams accomplished the following; Army s Julie Jorgensen (first-team soccer) and Bucknell s Matt Capece (third-team baseball) were named to ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America team. 50 Patriot League student-athletes were named to ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District teams. In addition to automatic qualifiers, the Patriot League sent a second atlarge team to the NCAA I-AA football playoffs for the second-straight season, and to the NCAA Men s Golf Championships for the first time in League history. Bucknell s men s basketball program became the first Patriot League team to crack the Associated Press and ESPN/USA Today Coaches Top 25 Poll. American s Keira Carlstrom turned in the highest finish in Patriot League history at the NCAA Women s Cross Country Championship, placing sixth overall. Four Patriot League men s lacrosse teams spent portions of the season ranked in the top 20 of the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association Poll, with Navy spending the entire year in the top 15. Holy Cross won the Patriot League s first-ever NCAA postseason contest in women s lacrosse, defeating Le Moyne in the NCAA Play-In Game to advance to the NCAA Women s Lacrosse Tournament. Army s women s basketball program became the first from a service academy to advance to the NCAA Division I Women s Basketball Tournament. Lehigh s Matt McBride became the highest Patriot League student-athlete to be selected in the Major League Baseball College Draft, going in the second round (76th overall) H O N O R E E S 35

36 Macdonough Hall The Navy volleyball team has seen extensive renovations completed to its locker room and arena over the past several years, a project totalling over $200,000. The project began in the summer of 2002 with construction of a 375-square foot team area, a 360-square foot locker room and a 150- square foot equipment and athletic training room adjacent to the new locker room. Part of the renovations included the addition of large hardwood lockers for each individual player. The team area is highlighted by a state-of-the-art audio/visual package, allowing DVDs, VHS videotapes or the internet to be viewed on the wall through a projection system. In addition, a Vis Cam imaging system runs through the projector. The summer of 2003 saw the addition of a new scoreboard to the Macdonough Hall arena. The scoreboard allows for the scores of past games within a match, as well as statistics for six players from both teams to be displayed. In addition, the scoreboard features a message system, allowing for league standings, listings of future matches and other text messages to be viewed. A new playing service was added to Macdonough Hall during the spring of The newly-installed Ger Floor by Taraflex is one of the most forgiving surfaces to play on. The centerpiece of the floor is the depiction of the Navy charging goat in the middle of the court NAVY VOLLEYBALL 36 UNITED STATES NAVAL ACADEMY
