After moving into a three-way tie for second place, the second half of the Big 12 slate kicks off Wednesday as Iowa State hosts Texas Tech at 8 p.m. in front of a national audience on ESPNU. 2. The Cyclones defeated TCU in straight sets 25-14, 25-22, Saturday evening in front of the largest crowd of the season for ISU and one of the best serving performances of the Christy Johnson-Lynch era. 3. Iowa State recorded an astonishing 13 service aces against the Horned Frogs, six coming in the first set. Kristen Hahn led the way with four aces, and Ciara Capezio, Tory Knuth and Caitlin Nolan each chipped in three aces. Mackenzie Bigbee led the ISU attack with 14 kills at a.440 hitting percentage. 4. The 13 service aces were the second-most in a match by a Christy Johnson-Lynch team, only surpassed by the 16 by ISU to open the 2006 season against Chicago State (when sets went to 30 points instead of the current 25). 5. Kristen Hahn continues to be one of the best liberos in the coutnry. The senior leads the Big 12 and is ranked fifth nationally with 5.72 digs per set. Hahn won her conference-record 16th Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week award for her efforts against Kansas and TCU. 6. Iowa State has been one of the best serving teams in the country. The Cyclones, as they have for the entirety of the 2013 season, lead the Big 12 in service aces per set (1.68 per set) and are the leaders in total aces in spite of playing the second-fewest sets in the league this year. 7. ISU has three of the top six servers in the Big 12 at its disposal. Middle blocker Tory Knuth leads the Big 12 at 0.49 aces per set, Ciara Capezio ranks third at 0.34 aces per set and Caitlin Nolan ranks sixth with 0.31 aces per frame. 8. Five of Iowa State s six losses have come to teams with an RPI in the top-25. Those losses were to Texas (No. 1), Nebraska (No. 10), San Diego (No. 18), Oklahoma (No. 15), and Illinois (No. 21). 2 CHRISTY JOHNSON-LYNCH Head Coach 9th Season Hometown: Omaha, Neb. College: Nebraska ( 96) Christy Johnson-Lynch was introduced as the 10th volleyball coach in Iowa State history on Dec. 17, In her first eight years at the helm, Johnson-Lynch has elevated the program to heights never seen before, culminating with NCAA Regional Final finishes in 2008 and 2011 and a trio of regional semifinal finishes (2007, 2009, 2012). Johnson-Lynch has posted a record at ISU, reaching milestone win 100 faster than any coach in school history and becoming the winngest volleyball coach in program history. The Omaha, Neb., native, inherited a team that had won just 13 Big 12 matches in 180 tries, has a record against conference foes, including a 17-3 mark in 2009 that resulted in a secondplace finish. As a result, Johnson-Lynch was named Big 12 Coach of the Year. The Cyclones received 10 Big 12 postseason honors in 2012, including the league s top libero (Hahn), freshman (Bigbee), setter (Landwher) and scholar-athlete (Straube) awards. Johnson-Lynch has mentored the only nine AVCA All-Americans in school history. The Cyclones earned three All-America nods in 2012: Hahn (second team), Landwehr (third team) and Hurtt (honorable mention). The infusion of talent has reached record heights as ISU has inked four top-25 recruiting classes, and Johnson-Lynch has helped transform Hilton Coliseum into one of the top-drawing arenas in the country, ranking ninth in national attendance in In 2013, the Cyclones sold a record 1,300 season tickets. All three sides lost to first-place Texas, who is 8-0, with KU defeating Oklahoma but losing to Iowa State, Oklahoma beating ISU, but losing to Kansas and Iowa State winning at Kansas, but losing at Oklahoma. ISU will face the three other teams with winning records at home in November. Oklahoma comes to town on Nov. 9, Kansas on Nov. 20 and Texas on Nov. 27. Iowa State has won at least 13 matches in Big 12 play the last four seasons. Prior to Johnson- Lynch taking over as Iowa State head coach, the Cyclones had just 13 Big 12 wins since the inception of the conference. Prior to Johnson-Lynch s arrival at Iowa State, the Cyclones only had 13 total conferece victories since the Big 12 s inception. Iowa State is one of seven schools to make five of the last six regional semifinals (Florida, Michigan, Nebraska, Penn St, Stanford, Texas). Iowa State opponents have hit over.300 just 23 times in 271 matches under Johnson-Lynch. Under Johnson-Lynch, Iowa State is in three-set matches, including 7-2 in Behind Johnson-Lynch s leadership, the Cyclones win 88% (149-20) of their matches when earning the first set victory. Iowa State has collected 20 wins in five-consecutive seasons under Johnson-Lynch. The Cyclones have had win seasons since Under Johnson-Lynch, the Cyclones have won at least one match over a top 25 opponent in each of her first nine seasons and have defeated at least two top 25 teams in each of the previous six seasons heading into Kristen Hahn is on a 58-match streak of 10 or more digs, breaking the previous school record of 44 by Ashley Mass from Hahn also has 20 or more digs in seven over her last 10 matches. ABOUT TEXAS TECH The Texas Tech Red Raiders are 8-16 overall and 1-7 in Big 12 play coming into Wednesday s match against Iowa State. TTU dropped a home match to Baylor in four sets Saturday. Meghan Stacy led three Red Raiders in double-figures with 16 kills, while Rachel Brummitt chipped in 21 digs. Tech was without its top attacker, Jenna Allen, against Baylor. Since starting her season at the top of the Big 12 campaign, Allen has 3.59 kills per set and 2.33 digs per set. Breeann David continues to be Tech s go-to attacker, ranking sixth in the Big 12 at 3.40 kills per set. TTU libero Rachel Brummitt is second in digs per set behind Kristen Hahn at 5.29 digs per set. Tech got its lone Big 12 win at TCU in five sets. This will mark the 39th all-time meeting between the programs. Tech holds the series lead, 20-18, but ISU has won the last 14 confrontations. The school record was previously held by Mass ( ), who had 44 straight during the 2007 and 2008 seasons. At Oklahoma, Hahn had a career-high 39 digs against the Sooners. She had a stretch with 10 digs in the second set, nine in the third frame and 12 in the fourth set. In Iowa State s win over UNI, Hahn had 10 digs in the first set before finishing the match with 34. Hahn has had at least 20 digs in eight matches this season and in 42 career matches. Hahn s streak is currently at 58 straight matches. HAHN CHASING ANOTHER 44 While Hahn has passed Mass school record of 44 straight matches with at least 10 digs, Mass has other records that are within Hahn s grasp. One is the school s record for most match with 20 digs, which is also held by Mass at 44. Hahn is currently on dig matches, recording eight this season. HAHN PASSES MASS AT 15 Another record belonging to Ashley Mass that now belongs to Kristen Hahn is for most weekly conference awards won in a career after Hahn earned her 16th for her performances against Kansas and TCU. Hahn finished the week with 51 digs, 35 in the five-set win at Kansas, at 6.32 digs per set. She has won the Big 12 DPOW Award four times in Mass is also the Big 12 s only three-time Libero of the Year. Hahn will look to join her in that company, too, having won the last two Libero of the Year honors. IOWA STATE WILL BE YOUR SERVER TONIGHT One of the revelations of the 2013 season has been the serving prowess of the Cyclones, who lead the Big 12 with 1.68 service aces per set. The rise to the top of the conference in serving has not been a one-person operation. Tory Knuth has emerged as the Big 12 s top server and ranks 13th nationally, averaging 0.49 aces per set. She posted a career-best four aces against Baylor and at Texas. The most recent Cyclone to join the most prolific servers of the Iowa State attack is Ciara Capezio. The freshman is third in the Big 12 at 0.31 aces per set, including a five-ace performance against West Virginia. Caitlin Nolan has been among the top servers in the Big 12 this season, averaging 0.30 aces per serve. Nolan had 15 SHE LED THE WAY... total aces in all of last Kills Led Team (Record) season and already has 20 this season. Against TCU, Iowa State had one of its best serving nights under Christy Johnson- Lynch with 13 aces in the sweep of the Horned Frogs. The amount of practice serving has helped ISU s return game. Yes you are. After winning the 2012 Big 12 Freshman of the Year award only playing in the front row, the right side is now playing all six rotations for the Cyclones. Playing her first all rotations match against Baylor in the conference opener, Bigbee has continued to be a great attacker and a reliable defender. In Big 12 play, Bigbee is averaging 3.41 kills per set and 2.07 digs per set. Against Texas Tech, Bigbee posted a career-best 14 digs as she continued to adjust to playing all six rotations. In ISU s win over Iowa Bigbee was the star, recording 16 kills at a.394 hitting clip and the first three service aces of her career. Though Iowa State started 4-0, it was not a straight-forward undefeated start. Iowa State had some adversity to overcome against both North Dakota and Texas A&M. Both times Mackenzie Bigbee shifted the direction of the match. In front of the raucous UND crowd, the home team were able to get an early first set lead on the Cyclones. However, Bigbee took over with ISU down to put together a 6-0 run that had three kills from Bigbee. Her frontline shift during the run produced five kills. Agaisnt Texas A&M, Iowa State needed a second attacker to step up when Tenisha Matlock was not on the court and Bigbee did just that. She contributed 18 kills at a.394 hitting percentage. CAPEZIO IS EVERYWHERE If there were any questions as to whether any freshmen could break into the Iowa State rotation, Ciara Capezio answered them from the first serve of the season. Capezio was one of the brighest stars in Iowa State s five-set win over Northern Iowa, the Wisconsin native led the match with 22 kills. At the Ameritas Player s Challenge in Lincoln, Capezio recorded her first two career doubledoubles against Dayton (14 kills, 11 digs) and St. Mary s (15 kills, 11 digs). She has five doubledoubles this season. Capezio s all-around game has been very steady for ISU in She has 186 kills at 2.91 per set and 159 digs at 2.48 per set. Capezio s lastest area contributing to the Cyclone cause is now in the service game. Capezio is ranked third in the Big 12 in aces per set at 0.34 per set, including five vs. West Virginia. 6 MATLOCK-ED IN Tenisha Matlock has led a strong group of middle blockers by example this season both in the attack, and in recent weeks on the block. Matlock is averaging a career-best 2.41 kills per set at a.361 hitting percentage, third-best in the Big 12. In the five-set victory at Kansas, Matlock dominated proceedings with 18 kills at a.417 hitting percentage. She also chipped in with a solo block and three block assists. Tenisha Matlock had a huge weekend at the UND Classic was the rightful recipient of the UND Classic MVP award. The senior had two very good matches on the first day, posting seven kills at a.462 clip and 10 kills at a.474 clip, but saved her best for the showdown against Texas A&M. Versus the Aggies, Matlock dominated the match with a match-best 20 kills at a.528 hitting percentage. She also chipped in a solo block and two block assists. While ISU is still last in the Big 12, Matlock s work has been a big reason why ISU has closed the gap. In Big 12 play, Matlock is averaing 0.73 blocks per set. FOR THE RED, WHITE AND BLUE During the summer, four members of Iowa State s current squad took part in USA Volleyball set ups. Mackenzie Bigbee, Kristen Hahn and Victoria Hurtt were in the A2 Program in Dallas, and Caitlin Nolan played in the U20 World Championships in the Czech Republic. Nolan and the U.S. Junior National Team went 4-3 at the U20 World Championships. Playing libero, she led the Americans with 73 digs across the seven matches and was the teams most reliable receiver of opponent s serves. Hahn and Hurtt were teammates at the A2 Program Tournament. Hahn was the Libero for Team Blue, posting 87 digs across five matches. Hurtt posted 50 kills across the five competitions. Bigbee played for the Gold Squad, recording seven kills in three matches. ALL-AMERICAN PROGRAM While Iowa State will have to work hard to replace the production of departed All-Americans Alison Landwehr and Jamie Straube, the program still has the luxury of returning 2012 second-team All-American Kristen Hahn and 2012 honorable mention All-American Victoria Hurtt. Iowa State will be returning at least one All-American for the fifth consecutive season. Of those five, on four occasions Iowa State has returned at least two All-Americans and twice the Cyclones have brought back three All-Americans. BIG 12 DEF. PLAYER OF THE WEEK Since the inception of the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week award in 2007, Iowa State has taken the honor 34 of the 97 times the Big 12 has presented the award, over 35% of the awards. In 2010, when the Cyclones played at Ames High School due to flooding at Hilton, 1,200 season tickets were sold due to the possibility of being locked out of matches. The rise of Iowa State volleyball attendance has been stunning. The Cyclones only sold 37 season tickets in After the Cyclones first Regional Semifinal appearance in 07, season ticket sales for the 2008 season were at 114. The Cyclones welcomed a season-best crowd of 3,398 to Hilton Coliseum for its match against TCU last Saturday. It marked the ninth-largest home crowd in Iowa State volleyball history.
