COACHING STAFF Fred Chao Head Coach 11th Season After reaching the 150-win plateau during the 2008 season, Fred Chao returns for his 11th year at the helm of the George Mason men s volleyball program in Chao was named the EIVA Coach of the Year for the second time in his career last season after guiding the Patriots to a 20-8 overall record and a second-place fi nish in the EIVA Championship Tournament, falling one match short of qualifying for the NCAA Men s Volleyball Championships. Mason was ranked in every Top- 15 Poll during the 2008 season, reaching a high of No. 11, and fi nishing the season as the only team to defeat eventual national champion Penn State, downing the Nittany Lions in four games on March 7 at the Fieldhouse. Six Patriots were selected to the EIVA All-East Team, with Hudson Bates, Kyle Gramit and R.J. Goubeaux all making the fi rst team. Gramit earned national acclaim for his stellar junior season, earning Second-Team AVCA All-America honors. During the 2007 season, Chao guided the Patriots to a overall mark and an appearance in the semifi nal round of the EIVA Championship Tournament. Four Patriots were EIVA All-East selections and redshirt freshman opposite hitter William Price was named the EIVA Newcomer of the Year, marking the third consecutive year a player from George Mason won the award. In 2006, Chao led the Patriots to one of their most successful seasons ever, fi nishing 22-6 overall, with an 11-1 record in conference play, and a perfect 12-0 record in home matches. Mason fi nished the season as the No. 14 team in the nation, marking the second consecutive season the Patriots fi nished the season ranked among the nation s top 15. The team achieved many milestones during its spectacular 2006 season: Chao picked up his 100th career coaching victory in the team s fourth match of the season against the University of Puerto Rico-Mayaguez, redshirt senior opposite hitter Shaun Powell was named EIVA Player of the Year and a Division I-II First-Team All-American, fi ve players the most of any team in the conference were named to the EIVA All-East First Team, two players were named to the EIVA All- Academic Team and Hudson Bates earned National Player of the Week honors for a record-setting night early in the season against the University of Puerto Rico- Mayaguez. Chao is no stranger to such success. In 2001, Chao earned EIVA Coach of the Year honors after the team fi nished 20-7 overall and recorded their fi rst win over EIVA-rival Penn State since Jan. 25, This is Chao s fi fth season as a full-time head coach. Prior to becoming a full-time head coach, Chao served as a part-time assistant coach for the women s team for six seasons. He also served as an assistant coach for the Patriots men s team, under Ron Shayka, during the 1995 and 1996 seasons. He spent one season as an assistant coach for the University of Maryland-Baltimore County, where he helped guide the Retrievers to a 21-9 record. Chao s other coaching positions include serving as an assistant at the Youth National Team Training Camp, serving as technical director and coach of the girl s 16-and-under Starlings Volleyball Club of Baltimore, development coach of the Glasgow City (Scotland) Council Sport for Youth Program, head coach of the Calendonian University women s club team, head coach of the George Mason High School volleyball team ( ) and head coach of the 14-and-under Metro Volleyball Club. In 2002, he coached some of the top boys players in the nation at the USA Volleyball Development Camp. Chao was also an apprentice coach in 2004 with the USA Volleyball Junior National Team and an assistant coach at the USA Volleyball High Performance Camp. In 2005, he served as an assistant coach on the Junior National Team that traveled to India for the World Championships. He is also the camp director of the USA Boys Development Camp and in the summer of 2006 was the head coach of the USA Boys Youth National Team. He currently serves as technical director for the Metro Virginia Volleyball Club. Chao played volleyball for the Patriots as a senior after transferring from Pepperdine University, where he played volleyball for a year. In he played for the Su Ragazzi Volleyball Club in Scotland, where his team went undefeated and won the National League, the Scottish Cup and the Scottish Open. In 1999 he played with them again, winning the Scottish Open for the 10th straight year. Chao was a twotime all-tournament team selection at the Chesapeake Regional Tournament in 1999 with No Mo Locos and in 2000 with the X-Patriots, a team made up of former George Mason men s volleyball players. He continued his win streak in Scotland with the X-Patriots, capturing the Scottish Open in the summers of 2000 and 2004, and together they won the VoleyBol Tournament in the Bahamas in Chao and another team, Hip Sing, have played in the fi nals of the North American Nine-Man Volleyball Championships seven straight times. In 2004, with Hip Sing, they were runners up in the North American Nine-Man Volleyball Championships. They also traveled to China to play in an international nine-man tournament. In addition to picking up playing time during the summer, Chao works at several volleyball camps, including running the Premier Volleyball Camp for boys at George Mason. 8 GEORGE MASON ATHLETICS 2009 SEASON OUTLOOK The George Mason men s volleyball team fi nished the 2008 season on a tear, winning 11 of its fi nal 13 matches on the way to a berth in the EIVA Championship Match against the top-ranked team in the nation and eventual national champion Penn State. Although the Patriots were unable to knock off the Nittany Lions to advance to the NCAA Division I Men s Volleyball Championships for the fi rst time since the 1988 season, the team will attempt to carry its late season momentum into the 2009 campaign EIVA Coach of the Year Fred Chao, who reached the 150-win plateau last season, will have the task of replacing three key senior starters in Outside hitters Hudson Bates and Mark Burik, and middle blocker R.J. Goubeaux all played their fi nal matches for the Green and Gold last year. All three were major contributors during their time at Mason. During the rallyscoring era, Bates ranks second in school history in kills, fourth in digs, fi fth in blocks and fourth in service aces. Burik is tied for sixth in service aces and eighth in digs, while Goubeaux ranks second in blocks. With the trio of Bates, Burik and Goubeaux departed, this year s senior leadership will come in the form of Kyle Gramit, a Second-Team AVCA All-America selection last season at the opposite hitter position. Gramit led the team in kills, kills per game, points, points per game and digs last season. The Naperville, Ill. native could see time at both the opposite spot and the outside hitter spot this upcoming season. Gramit is experienced at both positions, having played the outside hitter position his fi rst two seasons before moving to the opposite slot for his junior season. I d like to see Kyle be our goto hitter like he was for us last year in the opposite slot, Chao said. But, there is something to be said about him being able to touch the fi rst and the third ball. He is one of our most stable passers so we are going to need him to do that. If Gramit makes the move to the left side, that could open up the right side for junior Ben Nichols. Nichols played sparingly last year, appearing in three matches after transferring to the team from Long Beach State, but has shown immense potential in fall practice. We hope Ben develops as an opposite for us if Gramit s going to be passing, Chao said. Physically, he s capable of winning points for us; he just needs to do it more consistently. If Nichols takes over at the opposite hitter position for Gramit, the other outside spot will be manned by either Joe Norton, a native of Eden, N.Y. who redshirted last season as a freshman, or junior Luke Maloney, who saw time in all 28 of the Patriots matches last season. Maloney, a Second-Team EIVA All-East selection at libero, fi lled in at the outside hitter position last season while Burik was unavailable due to injury. Freshman Andrew Dentler is expected to step into one of the outside hitter spots immediately. Dentler was a Second- Team High School All-America selection following his senior season at Cumberland Valley High School in Mechanicsburg, Pa. Andrew has the potential to become a very good player, Chao said. He is physically gifted; he just needs to tweak some mechanics and learn how to pass and hit at this level. We are expecting him to carry a big load during his entire career here. Both Brandon McLaughlin and Erik Lanham return as middle blockers. In 23 matches played, McLaughlin was a force in the middle, fi nishing fi fth in the nation and second in the EIVA in blocks per game with an average of The Huntington Beach, Calif. native hit.406 during the season, the highest hitting percentage on the team and the seventh-highest single-season total in school history during the rally-scoring era. Lanham saw action in 21 matches and 45 games for the Patriots, fi nishing the season with 70 total blocks, for an average of 1.56 per game. Joining the two veterans in the middle will be a pair of freshman. Shaun Sibley, from Natick High School in Natick, Mass., is an intimidating presence to opposing offenses at 6 ft. 9 in. tall. Sibley played opposite hitter in high school so he is still adjusting to his new position. Shaun is coming along very well, Chao said. He is going to need to get some experience in our early matches but he already has a physical presence in the middle. Another freshman middle blocker is Lance Rogers, who is also an imposing fi gure near the net at 6 ft. 7 in. Rogers, a native of Old Bridge, N.J., has already impressed Chao this year in training with his unique skill set. Lance will probably be on the court really quickly, Chao said. He s the highest jumper on our team and he s a pretty good blocker as well. The setting duties will once again be handled by junior Ryan Kwiatkowski, a Second-Team EIVA All-East selection in 2008, who ranked 13th in the nation and fi fth in the EIVA with an average of assists per game. Sophomore Brandon Joyner will once again be an option for Chao off the bench at the setter position. Joyner appeared in 13 matches last season, recording an average of 9.28 assists per game. Sophomore Daniel Marushka was the team s top server off the bench last season, fi nishing the year with seven service aces. Taylor Jones, a freshman from Clover Hill High School in Midlothian, Va., rounds out the roster at the setter position. Eric Lucas returns for his sophomore season at libero. As a freshman, Lucas saw time in 22 matches, totaling 107 digs and a 1.70 digs per game average, tops on the team. When he s not playing outside hitter, Maloney is also available at the libero position. Four newcomers and one returning student-athlete round out the team s roster. Outside hitter Zach Calloway comes to Fairfax from Cardinal Gibbons High School in Raleigh, N.C., opposite hitter Alex Baraniewski joins the team from Lake Forest High School in Lake Forest, Ill., outside hitter Michael Koebel comes from Monacan High School in Richmond, Va., and Dave Reilly transfers to the team from Saint Francis (Pa.). After playing two seasons for the Red Flash, Reilly will not be eligible to compete during the 2009 men s volleyball season due to the NCAA s intraconference transfer policy. Returning for his junior season will be opposite hitter Colton Naill, who saw action in 16 matches last season. Naill recorded 1.77 kills per game and 2.27 points per game. George Mason will begin its 2009 men s volleyball schedule with a home match at the Field House on Thursday, Jan. 15 against New York University. Along with a tough EIVA Tait Division schedule featuring defending national champion Penn State, the Patriots face a tough slate of nonconference opponents including Ball State, IPFW, Lewis, Loyola (Ill.), Ohio State, Pepperdine and UC Santa Barbara. The EIVA Championship Tournament begins on Saturday, April 25 with quarterfi nal matches and wraps up on Saturday, May 2 with the championship match at the home of the conference s topseeded team. The NCAA Division I Men s Volleyball Championships will be held on May 7-9 at Smith Fieldhouse on the campus of BYU in Provo, Utah GEORGE MASON MEN S VOLLEYBALL MEDIA GUIDE

EIVA/FACILITIES EASTERN INTERCOLLEGIATE VOLLEYBALL ASSOCIATION The Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (EIVA) sponsors men s volleyball for teams in Divisions I, II and III on the east coast. There are 12 varsity programs in the EIVA. Each of the three conferences has an automatic berth to the four-team NCAA Division I Men s Volleyball Championship, while the NCAA Men s Volleyball Committee selects one wild card to round out the fi eld. Ron Shayka, George Mason s Associate Athletic Director of Business Operations, was formerly a member of this important committee. Founded in 1971 as the Eastern Collegiate Volleyball League, the EIVA changed to its current name in This season, the Tait Division is comprised of the seven strongest teams, while the Hay Division has fi ve teams. Each team in the Tait will meet twice during the regular season and six of those seven teams, along with the top two teams from the Hay, will advance to the EIVA Championship Tournament for a chance to John Linn Memorial Gym, located in the Physical Education Building on the Fairfax campus of George Mason University, serves as the permanent home court for the Patriot men s volleyball team. However, the team will play at the Field House again during the 2009 season while Linn Gym is being renovated and expanded. The gym, which is also the permanent home of the George Mason women s volleyball and wrestling teams, has been the site of several Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (EIVA) championship events including the men s volleyball tournament in 1984, 1985 and 1988, as well as the wrestling tournament in 1995, 1996 and 1999 and sessions of the NCAA Women s Volleyball Tournament in 1995 and In 2006, George Mason had its best season ever on its home fl oor, recording a perfect 12-0 record at Linn Gym. Mason was also dominant on its home fl oor at the Field House last season, fi nishing with a 13-1 record in home matches, including a win over eventual national champion Penn State. The Patriots have played several memorable matches at Linn Gym over the years, and have served as host to many of the premier teams in the nation. On April 23, 1984, the Patriots earned their most monumental victory, defeating Penn State in three games to earn their fi rst-ever berth in the NCAA Championship Tournament. The 1985 season-opener against UCLA was the program s fi rst sellout at home. On March 19, 1999, the Patriots retired the number eight jersey of the late Uvaldo Acosta, a former George Mason All- American and coach. A banner hangs in the gym to commemorate UV and all that he contributed to the Patriots and the sport of volleyball. The gymnasium was dedicated to the memory of John Linn compete in the NCAA Tournament. The teams with the best records will host the fi rst round of the playoffs with the regular season champion of the Tait Division hosting the semifi nals and fi nals. George Mason competes in the Tait Division, which includes Juniata, New Jersey Institute of Technology, Penn State, Princeton, Springfi eld College and St. Francis (Pa.). The Hay Division is comprised of East Stroudsburg, Harvard, New York University, Rutgers-Newark and Sacred Heart. George Mason is one of six teams to have represented the East at the NCAA Championships, having done so three times. In 1994, Penn State made EIVA and NCAA men s volleyball history by becoming the fi rst non-california based team to win the national title. The Nittany Lions repeated that feat this past season. JOHN LINN MEMORIAL GYM/FIELD HOUSE on April 5, Linn, who died on June 3, 1992, spent 22 years on the George Mason campus as a physical education instructor and served as the head coach of the trap and skeet, men s basketball and cross country teams, and as an assistant baseball coach, intramural director and assistant athletics director. Linn s great success as a coach came with the trap and skeet team, which he guided to seven consecutive Association of College Unions-International (ACU-I) National Championships from Linn began the program as a club in 1976 and it achieved intercollegiate status in Linn came to George Mason as the head basketball coach in 1970, and in 10 seasons directing the team in the gymnasium that now bears his name took the program to new heights. Linn, who resigned as basketball coach after the 1980 season, guided the Patriots from the NAIA ranks into NCAA Division I status in , surprising many by posting a 17-8 record that season. While the Patriots permanent home, John Linn Memorial Gym, is being renovated and expanded, the team will play its home matches at the Recreation Sports Complex (Field House), located adjacent to George Mason s main intercollegiate athletics complex. In addition to the temporary seating that will be set up around the volleyball court, the Field House contains an indoor track, weight and locker rooms, saunas, basketball courts and an indoor multi-purpose practice facility used by the baseball, softball, lacrosse and soccer teams. Home of the indoor men s and women s track and fi eld teams, it has served as host to the Mobil Invitational and the USA Track and Field Golden Spike Invitational Indoor Meet. Additionally, many of the intercollegiate athletics departmental offi ces are located in the building. GEORGE MASON ATHLETICS 2009 GEORGE MASON MEN S VOLLEYBALL MEDIA GUIDE 15

The University George Mason University began as the Northern Virginia branch of the University of Virginia in 1957 before being established as an independent member of the commonwealth s system of colleges and universities in With its proximity to Washington, D.C., it quickly grew into the largest university in the Commonwealth of Virginia with more than 30,000 students and the fi fth largest residential community in the state. Mason s dynamic student body, groundbreaking research programs, technological innovations, solid academic reputation, and distinguished faculty exemplifi es what a young university can successfully accomplish through foresight, determination, and hard work. Home to two Nobel Prize winners in economics: James M. Buchanan, PhD, retired (1986), and Vernon Smith, PhD (2002), the Mason faculty also includes a Pulitzer Prize winner and recipients of awards from the National Science Foundation, the National Endowments for the Arts and the Humanities, the Guggenheim Foundation, and the Templeton Foundation, and winners of Fulbright awards and fellowships. The Princeton Review consistently names Mason one of the most diverse universities in the country. Mason s School of Law is recognized by U.S. News & World Report as one of the top 50 law schools in the United States. Location Mason s three campuses in Arlington, Fairfax, and Prince William counties and its program in Loudoun County are located in Northern Virginia, the East Coast s hotbed of information technology that includes such fi rms as AOL, Oracle, and Nextel. Our location provides internships and cooperative education opportunities superior to those found elsewhere. In addition, our campuses are just an average of 15 miles from the heart of Washington, D.C. You can easily visit the White House, tour the Smithsonian, cheer on the Redskins, grab a bite to eat in eclectic Adams Morgan, or bike along the C&O Canal. The university recently opened its fi rst international campus in the United Arab Emirates. Imagination Established in 1972, George Mason is a relatively young university. It is not bound by tradition or old ways of thinking, but rather, it embraces technology and new approaches to learning. One example is the George W. Johnson Center, which integrates academics and student activities. The library, food court, study lounges, computer labs, cinema, banks, and student organization offi ces are all under one roof, offering students a multifaceted learning experience. Innovation Mason embraces technology and new approaches to learning. In fact, there are whole buildings dedicated to innovation classes and programs. Technology touches every academic program at Mason, from chemistry, where students use online spreadsheets to analyze data, to art, where they discuss the effects of virtual museums. Mason also offers technology-based minors in information technology, computer science, telecommunications, electronic journalism, and multimedia. Globalization At Mason, you ll study alongside students from across the country and around the world. Undergraduates come from all 50 states and more than 135 countries, creating an environment rich in diverse cultures and ideas. Our students also participate in international internships, working at embassies as well as at the United Nations. With one of the largest studyabroad programs, our students have the opportunity to travel to more than 30 countries and immerse themselves in the study of a language or a culture. A National Leader A National Leader in Intercollegiate Athletics George Mason University regularly ranks among the top NCAA Division I-AAA (nonfootball) programs in the country. In fi ve of the fi rst six years of the Sears Directors Cup Poll, the Patriots fi nished among the top 10 I-AAA programs, including fi rst-place fi nishes in 1995 and They are perennially in the top one-third of all programs. National Champions Mason counts two national championships in its young athletic tradition. The Patriots won the 1985 NCAA Women s Soccer Championship and the 1996 Men s Indoor Track and Field Championship.

The Athletic Department University Leaders Tom O Connor Assistant Vice President and Director of Athletics Tom O Connor is currently in his 15th year at George Mason University and his fourth decade in NCAA Division I athletics. He was named the athletic director at George Mason on November 1, 1994, and he added the title of assistant vice president in O Connor is widely regarded as an innovative, conscientious and visionary administrator whose bold leadership has advanced four Division I institutions. His major priority is to facilitate the University s commitment to its student-athletes, both academically and athletically. He has helped create an administrative process committed to excellence in the areas of academic assistance, gender equity and compliance with NCAA rules and regulations. George Mason recently was recognized for its efforts in the area of diversity as it was one of 10 schools nationally to earn the 2008 Diversity in Athletics Award in the category of African-American Graduation: Male Student-Athletes. The Award is presented on an annual basis by the Laboratory for Diversity in Sport at Texas A&M University, in collaboration with the NCAA. Under O Connor s guidance, George Mason was one of the nation s first 15 schools to complete the NCAA certification process, and it completed a second cycle of athletics certification in February He also spearheaded an effort by the University to come into full compliance with Title IX. As a result, George Mason perennially ranks among the nation s best in the Equity in Athletics Disclosure Act survey. In addition, George Mason athletic facilities have improved greatly during O Connor s tenure. The Aquatic and Fitness Center, a firstclass recreation and competition facility, opened on the Fairfax campus in 1998, while each campus athletics venue has received upgrades over the past decade. At the NCAA level, O Connor is entering the fifth year of his fiveyear term on the 10-member NCAA Division I Men s Basketball Championship Committee and served as Chair for the year. O Connor is the first representative in Colonial Athletic Association s history to be appointed to the committee, which has control, direction and supervision of the NCAA Division I Men s Basketball Championship. He has held a seat on the prestigious Management Council and was a member of the Division I Strategic Planning Committee and the Selection Review Committee. He was involved with the NCAA restructuring process as a member of the business/ finance cabinet and served a term as a member of the NCAA Men s Basketball Rules Committee. He has been a member of the Executive Council of the NACDA Division I-AAA Athletic Directors Association. He completed a two-year term as the President of the Colonial Athletic Association on July 1, A couple of the athletic programs have had tremendous seasons where they were in the national spotlight the past few years. The men s basketball team completed the best season in school history in , making their first-ever trip to the NCAA Final Four and first by any Colonial Athletic Association school. Mason finished the season ranked eighth in the USA Today/ESPN Coaches Poll, the highest-ever ranking for Mason. The 2006 men s volleyball team, nationally ranked throughout the season, just missed making it to the top of their sport. The Patriots were unbeaten at home and senior Shaun Powell was selected a Division I-II First-Team All-American. He became the 10th Mason men s volleyball player to garner All- American honors and the first since Mike Mauro in O Connor previously served as athletic director at Loyola (MD) College ( ), at Santa Clara University ( ) and at St. Bonaventure University ( ). He was also the head basketball coach at Dartmouth College ( ) and at Loyola ( ), and his age of 25 when he became head coach at Dartmouth ranks him as the sixthyoungest head coach to ever take over a NCAA Division I program. A native of Union City, NJ, the 61-year-old O Connor earned a B.A. degree in 1968 from Assumption (Mass) College, where he was a four-year basketball letterwinner. He is a member of the Assumption College Athletic Hall of Fame and recently was honored as the recipient of the 2008 Father Louis Dion A.A. 35 Outstanding Achievement Award. He recently was named 2007 Southeast Division AstroTurf AD of the Year (NACDA) and was inducted into the 2007 class at the Hudson County Sports Hall of Fame. He received the Pathfinder Award at the 2004 New England Basketball Hall of Fame induction ceremony. Other than the recent success of the men s basketball and volleyball teams at George Mason, the men s indoor track and field team won the 1996 national championship and the outdoor squad placed second. In the annual Sears Directors Cup standings, the Patriots ranked first among DI-AAA (non-football) institutions in 1995 and Under his leadership, Mason student-athletes have excelled in the classroom. Three Patriots have received National CoSIDA/Verizon Academic All-America recognition, most recently Chris Looze, who in 2005 became the first Mason student-athlete to garner academic player of the year in baseball. Art Kulans won the honor two seasons for men s Volleyball, First Team (2003) and Second Team (2002). Keri Chaconas, who went on to play in the WNBA in the league s inaugural season, was a Third Team (1996) Academic All-American in O Connor s teams have reached regional and national heights at other institutions under his guidance. Loyola won the 1976 men s soccer national championship, while Santa Clara s 1989 men s soccer team was the co-national champion with Virginia and the 1991 squad was the national runner-up. The school also earned NCAA bids in men s and women s basketball, women s soccer and baseball. Tom and his wife Barbara reside in Fairfax. The couple has four children and nine grandchildren. Alan G. Athletic Mission Statement The mission statement of George Mason University s Department of Intercollegiate Athletics comprises the Athletic Philosophy, Athletic Objectives, and Commitment to Equity. Athletic Philosophy George Mason University provides the student-athlete the opportunity and encouragement to progress toward a degree of his or her choice together with the opportunity to develop athletic abilities in an environment consistent with high standards of academic scholarship, sportsmanship, leadership, and institutional loyalty. The student-athlete at George Mason University is a bona fi de student pursuing a degree program. It is recognized that the George Mason University Intercollegiate Athletics Program is an important part of a well-rounded university dedicated to the service of a broad range of students, faculty members, and public interests; is important for generating community support for the institution at the state and local levels; fosters pride in the university among students, faculty members, and citizens of Virginia; can and should develop character, maturity, and a sense of fair play in its student-athletes; and is committed to the fair and equitable treatment of both men and women, the provision of equitable opportunities for minority students and institutional personnel, and the fair treatment of student-athletes, particularly in their academic role as students. Athletic Objectives The objectives of the George Mason University Intercollegiate Athletics Program are to have the university represented by men and women whose conduct refl ects credit on the institution and who are bona fi de students making normal progress toward a degree with appropriate academic counseling, advisement, and support; to field disciplined and competitive amateur student-athletes and teams recruited, coached, and supported by highly qualified individuals who are dedicated to the spirit and intent of all George Mason University, Colonial Athletic Association (CAA), and National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) rules; and to strive for improvements in the system of intercollegiate athletics by cooperating with individuals and institutions to reduce pressures toward improprieties. Commitment to Equity George Mason University is committed to providing equitable opportunities for male and female student-athletes. This commitment is measured by fulfi lling the requirements of Title IX, as well as by creating and ensuring an atmosphere that promotes George Mason recently was recognized for its efforts in the area of diversity as it was one of 10 schools nationally to earn the 2008 Diversity in Athletics Award in the category of African-American Graduation: Male Student-Athletes. The Award is presented on an annual basis by the Laboratory for Diversity in Sport at Texas A&M University, in collaboration with the NCAA. Former men s basketball player Lamar Butler is congratulated by men s basketball head coach Jim Larranaga after earning his degree. Mason Nation Logo The Mason Nation logo represents the growing fan base of George Mason University. The large block lettered wording exudes confi dence and stands above the rest. The Mason Nation sits upon a golden star that shines bright for all to see. It represents Mason s success in the past and the accomplishments of the future. Mason s run to the Final Four in 2006 went down as one of college basketball s greatest stories ever and led to the evolution of the Mason Nation. Reaching New Heights More fans saw the Patriots in action at the Patriot Center during the season than ever before. More than 175,000 fans have attended Mason home games over the past two years. The 6,834 average attendance was tops in the Colonial Athletic Association and ranked 82nd in the NCAA. Mason Basketball made 55 television appearances over the past two years, including 18 appearances on ESPN and CBS combined.

Student Services Commitment to the Student-Athlete George Mason University is well staffed to meet the needs of its student-athletes in the highly competitive NCAA Division I. The Intercollegiate Athletics Department has more than 100 full-time employees, including 14 members of the athletic directors management team, who provide a national-caliber 4:1 ratio of staff to nearly 400 student-athletes, competing in 22 intercollegiate sports. In addition, Mason teams have the benefi t of a full-time strength and conditioning coordinator and nutritionist, a full-time sport psychologist, a full-time director of community relations, and a full-time NCAA Life Skills coordinator. Rounding out the staff are full-time personnel in athletic training, academic support, facilities and events operations, marketing and sponsorships, sports information and media relations, and weight training. To support its own efforts, Intercollegiate Athletics has access to a wide range of university-sponsored resources to provide comprehensive and progressive services. Student Services and Welfare Intercollegiate Athletics provides student-athletes services that focus on their health and welfare with the ultimate goal of helping them become adults who enjoy satisfying lives. These services attend to the knowledge, skills, attitude, and personal health needed by student-athletes to succeed athletically, academically, socially, and as citizens of the university and the community of which they are a part. Mason is one of a growing number of schools in the nation to offer student-athletes not only assistance in the academic and athletic venues, but also to help them become more well-rounded. Debbie Wilson, a full-time sports psychologist, counsels studentathletes on alcohol and drug issues, psychological concerns, and performance enhancement. In addition to this service, Mason student-athletes also have access to the following programs: Life Skills Program The Life Skills Program, under the direction of former Patriot and NCAA National Champion Nena Rogers, focuses on the student-athlete s welfare in college, but its ultimate goal is to develop adults who will lead satisfying lives and make positive, meaningful contributions. Now in its sixth year at Mason, the program promotes an image of intercollegiate athletics as an integral part of the college experience and the studentathlete as an integrated member of the general student body. The Life Skills Program focuses on three key components: Commitment to Personal Development, which supports the development of a well-balanced lifestyle for student-athletes, encouraging emotional well-being, personal growth, and decision-making skills Commitment to Career Development, which encourages student-athletes to develop and pursue career and life goals Commitment to Service, which encourages studentathletes to become involved in service to their campus and surrounding communities. Student-Athlete Advisory Council The Student-Athlete Advisory Council provides a medium of communication between student-athletes and the athletic administration, Student Government, the faculty, and the community. In addition to providing feedback and insight into Intercollegiate Athletics issues, the council disseminates information, builds a sense of community within the department involving all athletic teams, organizes community service efforts, and promotes a positive student-athlete image on campus. The council comprises two student-athletes from each intercollegiate team, including cheerleaders and student trainers. Sports Medicine and Strength and Conditioning Training Take a look behind the scenes of Mason athletics, and you ll fi nd a group of people integral to the success of Patriot student-athletes: Mason s sports medicine and strength and conditioning staffs. The sports medicine department, located in the Recreation Sports Complex (Field House), is equipped with the latest in medical supplies and technology. The staff consists of four full-time certifi ed athletic trainers, two certifi ed graduate students, and a number of widely respected local doctors to deal with the nearly 400 Patriot student-athletes. Linda Pullen, who has been on the staff at Mason since 1984, coordinates and directs Athletic Trainer Debi Corbatto with a men s basketball player.

sports medicine at Mason. The full-time athletic trainers are head athletic trainer Ray Yamrus Jr. and assistants Carla Boelte, Debi Corbatto, Summer Gebhart and Joseph Sierzega. Frank Pettrone MD, head team physician and orthopedic surgeon for Mason athletics, has worked with Patriot student-athletes since 1977 and directs physician coverage of events and weekly clinics. A number of other area specialists also work with Intercollegiate Athletics to provide the best medical care possible for Mason student-athletes. Weight Training Another factor integral to the success of Mason student-athletes is the state-of-the-art weight room located in the Field House. An excellent strength and conditioning program, vital for every studentathlete, has been exclusively designed for each team to meet its specifi c needs. Robert Handerahan, head strength and conditioning coordinator, is responsible for the design and implementation of strength and conditioning programs for all athletic teams. Handerahan is assisted by Timothy Teefy. Robert Handerahan with a student-athlete. Communications and Marketing Mason s Sports Information and Public Relations Offi ce promotes timely and accurate coverage of the Patriots by coordinating interviews, meeting the information needs of reporters, and compiling and maintaining Patriot statistics, photographs, and archives. The offi ce offers many progressive media services: GoMason. com The Patriots offi cial web site contains information on Intercollegiate Athletics and up-to-date information on student-athletes with biographies, statistics, and comprehensive game day information. Patriots Sports Hotline ( ) Updated game and event results and statistics are available by phone. Video Streaming Live video webcasting is provided for both men s and women s basketball home games. The webcasts are state-of-the-art and offer tremendous picture quality to fans with fast or broadband Internet connections. Video Services A complete video archive of all Mason intercollegiate athletics teams is maintained. Tapes are completely logged and are available to local media. The Patriot Club The Patriot Club was established in 1975 to create greater interest in and fi nancial support for Mason varsity athletics. A component of Intercollegiate Athletics and the George Mason University Foundation, the Patriot Club is charged with soliciting donations for the Student-Athlete Scholarship Fund, enhancing the visibility of Mason athletics and engaging individuals and businesses in Mason s Division I athletic programs. The Patriot Club comprises university faculty members, alumni, and friends. Green Coat Society The Green Coat Society is a new giving category that was offi cially launched by the Patriot Club at the Final Four Celebration in May Members of the Green Coat Society make a three-year commitment to Mason Athletics at a minimum donation of $5,000 per year for three years ($15,000 total). In addition to a special Green Coat, these donors receive invitations to exclusive events, offers for special ticket opportunities, and several recognition occasions. For more information on the Green Coat Society or to receive a Green Coat Society commitment form, please contact the Patriot Club at The Green Coat Society is recognized on the court during a men s basketball home game.

First-Class Facilities The George Mason University campuses are home to some of the finest athletic facilities in the country. The Patriot Center is a superb 10,000-seat arena and home of Mason s men s and women s basketball teams. Mason fans have watched the Patriot men earn fi ve postseason appearances in the past nine seasons, three times in the NCAA Tournament, including a trip to the 2006 Final Four, the fi rst ever in school and conference history, and two National Invitation Tournaments. The women advanced to the Women s National Invitation Tournament in 2001 and The men s team set a facility record and had one of the largest on-campus crowds in Virginia state basketball history when nearly 10,000 fans cheered on the Patriots against Wichita State on Nov. 18, 2006 in a nationally-televised game on ESPN2. In addition, the facility hosts more than 100 events per year, including concerts and other live performances. The Aquatic and Fitness Center, which opened in 1998, is an eye-catching, well-designed facility on the Fairfax Campus. Named a 1999 Facility of Merit by Athletic Business magazine, the center houses the Jim McKay Natatorium, which has been the host facility for the past eight CAA Swimming and Diving Championships and has become the annual home of that event. The $11.2 million 66,000-square-foot two-pool complex features a 50-meter Olympic-size pool and a 25-yard recreational pool. The center also includes a fi tness gallery, four classrooms, whirlpool, and sauna. The center is undergoing an expansion that will create additional space for fi tness equipment and fi tness rooms. George Mason Stadium is an expertly landscaped outdoor facility and home to the men s and women s soccer teams, the men s and women s outdoor track and field teams, and the women s lacrosse team. There is grandstand seating for 5,000 spectators, an all-weather track and an electronic scoreboard. A quality Musco lighting system was added prior to the seasons to allow for expanded use of the facility at night. The stadium has hosted NCAA Championship soccer matches, as well as practices for the U.S. Men s National Soccer Team, the U.S. Women s National Soccer Team, and visiting teams that participated in World Cup competition in 1994 and George Mason Stadium has been the host facility for many Eastern College Athletic Conference/ IC4A Outdoor Championships, which feature some of the top track and field athletes on the East Coast, and served as the site for the inaugural NCAA East Regional Track and Field Championships in May 2003.

The John Linn Memorial Gymnasium, located in the Physical Education Building, is the home of the men s and women s volleyball teams and wrestling team, and seats 2,800 spectators. It has been the site of several CAA championship events and hosted NCAA Tournament volleyball matches in 1995 and The building is currently undergoing a $30 million renovation expansion. The improvements will include a new 1,500- seat venue for volleyball and wresting matches. Raymond H. Hap Spuhler Field is widely regarded as one of the top collegiate baseball complexes in the mid-atlantic region. It has grandstand seating for 900 spectators, an enclosed press box, and an electronic scoreboard. The fi eld was named the 2002 Sports Turf Managers Association Baseball Field of the Year in the College/University Division. The Recreation Sports Complex (Field House) contains an indoor track, weight and locker rooms, saunas, basketball courts, and an indoor multipurpose practice facility used by the baseball, softball, women s lacrosse, and soccer teams. Home of the indoor men s and women s track and fi eld teams, the Field House has hosted the Mobil Invitational Meet and the USA Track and Field Golden Spike Invitational Indoor Meet. The George Mason Softball Complex was selected as the site of the 2000 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division I Softball Championships. It was selected as the 2007 College and University Softball Field of the Year by The Sports Turf Managers Association. The facility is undergoing a $1.7 million renovation, which includes permanent seating and press box. The complex is home to the Washington Glory, the women s fastpitch professional softball team. The Freedom Aquatic and Fitness Center on the Prince William Campus is an $18.3 million building, the largest of its kind on the East Coast. The center is the result of a partnership between the University and local governments.

Academic Services The Department of Intercollegiate Athletics Academic Services Program is dedicated to helping Mason student-athletes develop the intellectual skills, work habits, and academic résumés that will serve as the basis for personally satisfying adult lives that make positive contributions to society. The Academic Services Program staff provides support for each student-athlete during the college experience so that he or she completes a degree in a timely manner, maintains academic eligibility to participate in his or her NCAA sport, and has a positive college experience, becoming a critically thinking adult who demonstrates self-accountability for learning. At Mason, academic coordinators in the Academic Services Program work directly with individual student-athletes, coaches, and teams. Specifi c help is given to each student-athlete in adjusting to the combined athletic, academic, and social expectations at the college level. Most college student-athletes benefi t from working with qualifi ed professionals in learning to manage time effectively and balancing athletics with academic demands. They also learn to develop the necessary study skills, meet expectations of increasing self-accountability, and make career development choices that help ensure their success as college students, athletes, and graduates. Although many enhancement experiences are offered in small-group, team, and classroom settings, individual support is available to student-athletes as determined by the individual s need and availability. All aspects of the Academic Services Program are overseen by Debbie Wilson, PhD, who was named the associate athletic director for academic services in July Wilson, who came to Mason in 1988, also serves the Intercollegiate Athletics Department as a sports psychologist. In that role, she counsels studentathletes on personal, social, and athletic performance concerns. A former women s basketball coach at Ohio State University, she holds a doctorate in counseling psychology from the University of Maryland and is a licensed psychologist. Also on staff are: Academic Resource Center and Computer Lab The Academic Resource Center and Computer Lab provide student-athletes a dedicated study environment. PC-style computers are available to accommodate the accessibility needs of student-athletes. Tutoring All student-athletes are eligible to receive tutoring through the Academic Services Program. Tutoring is available upon request and within the resources of the program. Travel and Competition Verification The Academic Services Program assists student-athletes in providing professors with verifi cation when a class or class experience is missed because of participation in or travel to a regularly scheduled athletic competition. Eligibility, Degree Progress, and Degree Completion Academic Services Program staff members help student-athletes ensure that their scheduled classes will meet NCAA academic eligibility requirements. Although responsibility for meeting graduation requirements is shared between student-athletes and their academic advisors, the staff helps student-athletes balance the training and competitive demands of collegiate sport experiences with those of the student-athletes chosen degree programs. The academic performance and progress of each student-athlete is systematically monitored, and the results are made available to the student-athlete and his or her head coach.
