Iowa has won three-straight games in the series. Iowa State s last win in the series was in 2014 when Cole Netten kicked the game-winning FG with 0:02 seconds left for a Cyclone win in Iowa City. Iowa won last year on the final play of the game in a overtime victory in Ames. Iowa State had a 10-point fourth quarter lead and gave up a 46-yard TD pass with 1:09 remaining to allow the game to go into overtime. Iowa State freshman OL Sean Foster s father, Troy, was a member of the Iowa football team from Iowa State defensive GA Colby Kratch is the son of former Iowa OL Bob Kratch, who was a two-time All-Big Ten selection (1986 and 1988) and an eight-year NFL veteran. ISU junior WR Hakeem Butler set career-highs in receiving yards (128) and TD catches (2) in last year's game vs. Iowa. He also had a career-long 74-yard reception. ISU-SDSU GAME CANCELLED The Cyclones will technically open their season vs. Iowa for the first time since 1986 after their game vs. South Dakota State last Saturday was cancelled. ISU jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead (10:55 in 1st Q), but lightning and severe storms forced a halt in play. After an almost 2-hour and 30-minute delay, officials from both schools decided to cancel the game with more storms in the forecast. The game is considered a no contest, and all stats accrued will not count. It marked the first time ISU had a game cancelled (vs. Drake) since Nov. 23, 1963 (JFK assassination). Rescheduling with South Dakota State seems unlikely, however ISU officials are looking into the possibility of finding another opponent for its bye week (Oct. 20) or Dec. 1. Iowa State head coach Matt Campbell is 1-0 a week after cancellation games. In 2015, his Toledo team had its season-opener vs. Stony Brook cancelled due to weather. The following week the Rockets knocked off No. 18 Arkansas (16-12) in Little Rock. WHAT TO EXPECT FROM THE OFFENSE The Iowa State offense continued to make progress in Matt Campbell s second season with the Cyclones in. Campbell and his offensive coaching staff will utilize a collaborative effort in play-calling in. Iowa State ranked 56th nationally in scoring (29.2) and 30th nationally in passing offense (272.9), breaking the school record for passing yards per game. ISU s 29.2 ppg scoring average ranked third in school history and its 380 points scored was second in school history. The Cyclones totaled 47 touchdowns, the third-best output in school history, and 27 of them came through the air, the second-best total in the history of the program. ISU returns the following on offense from : 65.4% of its passing yards, 90.2% of its rushing yards, 55.8% of its TDs and 45.8% of its receiving yards. For the first time in Cyclone history, ISU will boast a pair of rushers who have recorded an 1,000-yard rushing season in senior Mike Warren (1,339 yards in 2015) and junior David Montgomery (1,146 in ). Warren, who ranks 14th in career rushing yards at ISU (2,003), had 105 yards on the ground in in a reserve role. Montgomery is one of the best returning backs in the nation. The bruising runner led the nation in forced missed tackles in with 109, earning First-Team All-America honors by Pro Football Focus. Montgomery had six 100-yard rushing games and led the Cyclones in TDs with 11. His versatility helped him average a team-best yards from scrimmage in, catching 36 passes from out of the backfield as well. Montgomery, who was a First-Team All-Big 12 selection in, has been named to a number of preseason All-America squads and is a member of the Doak Walker Award and Maxwell Award watch lists. Junior Sheldon Croney and Kene Nwangwu also return to bolster the depth at running back. Croney rushed for 159 yards a year ago as the primary backup to Montgomery in the latter half of the campaign.

3 IOWA STATE FOOTBALL BOWL BERTHS: 1971, 1972, 1977, 1978, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2004, 2005, 2009, 2011, 2012, Nwangwu was a freshman All-American as a kickoff returner in 2016, but was forced to miss the season as a medical redshirt. The receiving group will have to replace a number of key contributors, including Allen Lazard, who broke virtually every career receiving mark in the history of the program. The key returner is junior Hakeem Butler, who had a breakout season in when he ranked second on the team in receiving yards (697) and TD catches (7). His seven TD snares tied for ninth on ISU s season chart. Butler, who was an honorable mention All-Big 12 choice a year ago, was on the receiving end of four of ISU s six 50+ yard plays (74, 67, 57, 52) last season. His current streak of three-straight games with a TD catch ties for seventh in school history. ISU also returns senior Matthew Eaton and junior Deshaunte Jones, who both had over 20 catches and 200 receiving yards in. Eaton had four TD catches a year ago and Jones has 65 receptions, 809 receiving yards and six TDs in his career. Other receiving weapons will likely be freshman Tarique Milton and sophomore Landen Akers. The Cyclones received outstanding news in the offseason when QB Kyle Kempt was granted a sixth season of eligibility by the NCAA. Kempt took over as ISU s signal-caller in the fifth game of the season in, leading the Cyclones to three victories over ranked opponents (Oklahoma, TCU, Memphis). Kempt had two 300-yard passing games and ended the year with ISU s completion percentage mark (66.3). He threw for 15 TDs, tying for fifth on ISU s season chart, and had just three interceptions. He enters the season with a string of 130 consecutive passes thrown without an interception, the sixthlongest streak in school history, and eight-straight games with a TD toss, tying for the fourth-best streak in the history of the program. Campbell has mentioned the importance of improving the offensive line for success in. The Cyclones will be experienced with 51 career starts returning in T Julian Good-Jones (24), G Josh Knipfel (13), T Bryce Meeker (8) and T Sean Foster (6). Good-Jones, who was an honorable mention All-Big 12 selection at center in, owns the longest active starting streak on the team at 24 games. He will likely move to tackle for his junior season. Knipfel, a junior who started all 13 games a year ago, has made many preseason All-Big 12 teams. Other players who are ready to step up on the line will be freshman Colin Newell (C) and sophomore Josh Mueller (G). DEFENSIVE NOTES The improvement of the Cyclone defense in was simply amazing, and with six players who earned All-Big 12 honors on the defensive side of the ball returning, there is plenty to be excited about. Cyclone DC Jon Heacock was one of 15 semifinalists for the Broyles Award, given annually to the nation s best assistant coach for his efforts in, and the 34-year coaching veteran returns 10 players with a combined 136 career starts on defense. In all, ISU returns players with a combined 1,000 career tackles on defense. Iowa State was successful in because of its versatility of switching schemes without substituting. The Cyclones showed multiple looks, including a three-man front with five defensive backs. ISU ranked second in the Big 12 and 26th nationally in scoring defense (20.9) and ranked third in the Big 12 in total defense (366.2) in. The previous time the Cyclones ended a year with under 400 yards of total defense average was 2007 (390.3). In league play, ISU was even better, ranking second in the Big 12 in scoring defense (18.9) and total defense (357.2) in league games only. ISU s 18.9 scoring defense average was the lowest output for the Cyclones in Big 12 history (1996-). ISU also led the league (conference games only) in passing defense (213.9). ISU recorded a season-school-record 96 tackles for loss, ranking second in the Big 12 and 16th nationally at 7.4 per game. ISU had four games with double digits in TFL: Akron (11.0), Texas Tech (10.0), Oklahoma State (10.0), Memphis (10.0). ISU recorded a +41 TFL margin, allowing only 55 on offense to rank sixth nationally in TFL margin a year ago. ISU forced 20 turnovers in (12 interceptions, 8 fumble recoveries), ranking second in the Big 12 and 16th nationally in turnover margin (+10). The Cyclones recovered a fumble in a school-record six-straight games during the season. ISU s defensive front will have both quality and depth with the return of All-Big 12 performers JaQuan Bailey (DE) and Ray Lima (DL). Bailey, a preseason All-Big 12 Team selection and Ted Hendricks Award nominee, led the team with 7.0 sacks in, which tied for fourth-best season total in school history, while starting all 13 games in. He needs just one sack (10.5) to break into ISU s career top-10. Lima is one of the best returning interior defensive linemen in the Big 12, earning Honorable Mention All-Big 12 accolades in. Lima, who is a member of both the Bronko Nagurski Award and Outland Trophy watch lists, had 25 tackles and 4.5 TFL while starting nine games in. The depth on the defensive front will be bolstered with the return of senior Spencer Benton (DE), sophomore Enyi Uwazurike (DE), junior Jamahl Johnson (DL) and junior Matt Leo (DE). Harvey, who has the second-most starts on the team with 29, has 213 tackles and 22.0 TFL in his career. Spears was one of ISU s biggest surprises in, ranking second on the team in tackles (107) while starting all 13 games. He had two fourth-quarter interceptions to seal victories and was named the Defensive MVP of the Liberty Bowl. Redshirt freshman O Rien Vance and true freshman Mike Rose are candidates to replace All-American Joel Lanning at MIKE linebacker.
