1 East Carolina Pirate Volleyball 2014 ECU VOLLEYBALL FINAL NOTES Overall 6-14 American Season in Review East Carolina finished the 2014 season with a overall record and a 6-14 ledger in American Athletic Conference action. The Pirates collected 15 wins in a single season and six conference victories for the first time since ECU started off the year on a hot streak, winning five-straight matches, three of which were sweeps. This marked the first time in six years the Pirates put together a five-match win streak. The Pirates were competitive as they faced a tough schedule which included playing at then-no. 3 Penn State, which was the reigning national champion. ECU opened the season hosting the East Carolina Invitational and the Pirates turned in several strong performances to go 3-0 in the invitational and become co-champions along with UNC Wilmington of the tournament. East Carolina followed the successful opening weekend with a strong showing at the Penn State Alumni Classic as the Pirates posted a 2-2 record with victories over Eastern Illinois (3-2) and DePaul (3-1). During the 2014 campaign the Pirates reached several milestones as a team and individually. As a team, East Carolina tallied 98 digs in the match against Memphis on October 26, which comes in third in the single-game record book. The Pirates received several solid performances from junior libero Erika Figueroa who tied the ECU school record with 34 digs at UConn on November 16. Figueroa finished the season with three 30-plus dig efforts, while averaging 3.74 digs per set to lead the squad and rank ninth in the conference. Senior setter Zarah Cecich, who was the lone senior on the squad, concluded her collegiate career with a.242 attack percentage and 2,889 career assists. Her hitting percentage ties her for ninth place in the ECU all-time record book, while her 2,889 helpers rank her third. On the year, Cecich averaged 8.70 assists per set to lead the Pirates and rank sixth in the American Athletic Conference. In addition to Figueroa and Cecich s accolades, the Pirates also received strong showings from sophomore Ashley McRae and freshmen Natalie Montini and Ashton Mares. McRae led East Carolina with a.360 attack percentage after knocking down 250 kills on 500 attempts with just 70 errors. Her hitting percentage was good for a fourth-place ranking in the conference and put her in the top 55 in the nation. McRae finished the season with a team-leading 84 total blocks after gathering 76 block assists and eight solo blocks to average 0.72 on the year. Although McRae led ECU with 84 total blocks, it was Montini would led the Pirates in blocks per set with 0.96 after accumulating 72 total blocks (64 block assists, eight solo blocks). Her blocks per set average is good for sixth in the American as she put up nearly one block in every set. Mares recorded a team-best 34 service aces to average 0.29 per set which ranked her fifth in the league. In her first year playing collegiate volleyball, Mares posted 293 kills (2.53 per set) to rank second on the squad, while adding 375 digs (2.37 per set), with 30 blocks and 28 assists. East Carolina finished the year with 1,379 total kills to average per set on 1,272 assists (10.78 per set), while hitting.189. The Pirates tallied 146 service aces on the year for an average of 1.24 per set which ranked them fifth in the league. 2 All-Time Record Book Senior setter Zarah Cecich finished her collegiate career registering a total of 2,889 assists in her career to rank third in East Carolina s all-time record book. She has dished out 1,018 assists in her senior season to average 8.70 per set which ranked her sixth in the American Athletic Conference. Head Coach Julie Torbett Record at ECU (2nd): (.444) In addition to her career assist total, Cecich finished her career with a.242 attack percentage to tie for ninth in the ECU all-time record book. She hit.340 in her final year to bring her career mark over the.240 plateau. Single-Game Record Book As a team, East Carolina notched a total of 98 digs in the match against Memphis on October 26 to rank third in the singlegame record book. The 2014 squad came up just 12 digs shy of tying the school record of 110 digs in a single match which was set by the 2006 Pirates. Junior libero Erika Figueroa had a solid year as she tied the ECU school record with 34 digs at UConn on November 16. Figueroa also turned in a pair of 33 dig-performances during the season to rank second in the single-game record book. Killin It Sophomore outside hitter Sydney Darden finished the season with a team-best 312 kills on the year to average 2.74 kills per set. She was the only Pirate to tally at least 300 kills in the season. Darden helped East Carolina record 1,379 total kills and average kills per set as a team. In addition to her offensive efforts, Darden added 305 digs (2.68 per set) to rank second on the team, while contributing 43 total blocks, 41 assists and 29 service aces. Setting the Standard Senior setter Zarah Cecich concluded her collegiate career with 1,018 assists in her senior season to average 8.70 per set. The Crown Point, Ind., native was the Pirates primary setter as she led the East Carolina in assists in every single match. She finished her career with 2,889 assists to rank third in the ECU all-time record book. As the lone senior on the squad, Cecich helped the Pirates accumulate 1,272 assists for an average of per set. Can You Dig It? Junior Erika Figueroa started the season as the Pirates defensive specialist and slowly transitioned into the role of libero as she turned in several solid performances in the back row. The Orlando, Fla., native finished the season with a teamleading 441 digs to average 3.74 per set which ranked her ninth in the American Athletic Conference. Figueroa paced the ECU defense as the Pirates tallied a total of 1,691 digs on the year to average per set. Block Party Middle blockers Ashley McRae and Natalie Montini had quite a year at the net for the Pirates. McRae, a sophomore out of Silver Spring, Md., concluded the season with a team-best 84 total blocks after accumulating 76 block assists and eight solo blocks. She averaged 0.72 blocks per set. Montini notched 72 total blocks in her first year playing collegiate volleyball with 64 block assists and eight solo blocks to average a team-leading 0.96 blocks per set. Junior Torre Blake, who finished the year playing in 100 sets this season with 113 kills and 56 digs, is the daughter of Jeff Blake who played football at ECU and proceeded to enjoy a lengthy NFL career. She is also the cousin of Isaiah Jones, a sophomore receiver on the Pirate football team. Additionally, Kierra and Sierra Lee-Dunson took the court for the Pirates this season and Kierra concluded the year with a.288 attack percentage, while Sierra saw action in 13 sets with nine total blocks. 3 A Year in the American ECU Volleyball In its first season in the American Athletic Conference, East Carolina finished with a 6-14 record and ranked ninth in the Quick Facts standings. The Pirates put together a solid year as they transitioned to a new league and head coach Julie Torbett, who finished her second year at the helm, continues to rebuild the team. University Information The Pirates collected their first victory in the league on October 5 as they defeated Houston, 3-2 [14-25, 15-25, 25-18, 29-27, 15-13], on the road. After falling behind in the first two sets, East Carolina proceeded to knock off the Cougars for the next three sets to complete the 3-2 victory and secure its inaugural American Conference win. It didn t take long for ECU to rack up its second conference victory as the Pirates came home to Williams Arena inside Minges Coliseum and held off USF by a score of 3-1 [25-18, 7-25, 25-20, 25-21]. With a 2-3 record in conference action, the Pirates were unable to keep the momentum going as they dropped three in a row to fall to 2-6, before edging Cincinnati, 3-2 [21-25, 25-21, 14-25, 25-22, 15-13], in Greenville, N.C. East Carolina suffered a four-match losing streak but was not deterred as the Pirates swept Tulane by set scores of 25-22, 25-22, 25-13, on November 9 at home. The Pirates proceeded to win three of their next four matches with victories over UConn (3-2) and Memphis (3-2) on the road, before ending the year with three sweeps against Cincinnati, SMU and Tulsa. Despite ending the year with three straight setbacks, the Pirates finished the year with six conference wins for the first time since As a team, East Carolina hit.162 in conference matches and averaged kills per set on assists per set. When playing American Conference opponents, the Pirates averages 1.08 services aces per set to go along with digs per set and 1.67 blocks per set.
