2 SEASON OUTLOOK The Pepperdine men s volleyball team may boast the nation s best 1-2 punch in senior setter Jonathan Winder and junior opposite Paul Carroll, and for that, the 2008 Waves were awarded the preseason status of favorite in the Mountain Pacifi c Sports Federation. Few college teams can likely match the experience and talent of Pepperdine s duo. Winder, a three-time All-American, was the AVCA and MPSF Player of the Year last season. Carroll was an All- American fi rst teamer who also starred for Australia during the 2007 World Cup. Add in the return of junior outside hitter J.D. Schleppenbach, who was second on the team in kills last season, and half of the Waves starting lineup from a team that made the national semifi nals is intact. The big issue the 2008 Waves will face, however, is that the other half of the lineup will be vastly different, as both middle blockers and one outside hitter, as well as the libero, graduated from the 2007 squad that went 26-3 overall, won the MPSF regular season with a 21-1 record and was ranked #1 in the country for much of the season. JONATHAN WINDER Unfortunately, the Waves came up short at the end of 2007, losing in the fi nal of the MPSF Tournament to UC Irvine and then to Indiana-Purdue Fort Wayne in the semifi nals of the NCAA Tournament. As they try to make the next step and win the school s sixth NCAA championship, 25th-year head coach Marv Dunphy knows he will have to quickly develop some capable replacements. We lost a lot of experience, he said. And after our fall practice, we still have a ways to go. For a lot of the players who are out there for the fi rst time, they got a small dose of what is expected of them. They know the standard that needs to be met. We re going to have to grow up fast. With question marks about how Pepperdine s inexperience will play out, Dunphy was a bit surprised when the MPSF preseason coaches poll came out and the Waves had a slight edge at the top over BYU and UCLA. Nationally, Pepperdine is ranked #2 by the AVCA and #6 by Volleyball Magazine. I think that schools that have most of their players back have an advantage over the teams that have lost a lot, he said. There are fi ve or six teams that have everybody back and that s a tremendous advantage. There are some other programs that probably should have been favored. But my guess is the reason they picked us is because of Jonathan and Paul. We have a couple of guys with great experience, All-Americans last year, but there s another side of us that s pretty darn young. Winder (Irvine, Calif./ Woodbridge HS) was the starting setter as a freshman in 2005 when the Waves won the NCAA championship. Each year, his status has improved, as he went from the All-American third team as a freshman to the second team as a sophomore to the national player MEN S VOLLEYBALL PAUL CARROLL SEASON INFORMATION of the year as a junior. He has averaged assists per game over his three-year career. He helped the U.S. to a bronze medal at the 2007 World University Games in Thailand. Jonathan is really knowledgeable and is a bright young man to work with, Dunphy said. He competes well and he s tough. He leads by example and is not afraid to take charge when need be. He had a great year last year. Carroll (Forster, Australia/Great Lakes College) had an outstanding 2007 with both the Waves and his native Australia. During the college season, he ranked second nationally in kills (5.6 per game) and points (6.67), both of which were also the best marks at Pepperdine since the switch to rally scoring. During the fall, he went to Japan to compete with the Australian National Team at the World Cup, and he fi nished second among all players with 183 kills. Paul is a very smart hitter with really good range, Dunphy said. It s no secret that he s going to see a lot of sets. He was good last year and I expect him to be better this year. He s a very competitive individual. Schleppenbach (Ventura, Calif./Ven-

3 SEASON INFORMATION tura HS) started at libero as a freshman but moved to outside hitter last season, and was second on the team with 2.73 kills per game. J.D. should have a big load as an outside hitter, Dunphy said. He did well for us last year and I m looking for even more this year. A pair of juniors who have waited for their turn to break into the regular rotation should have their opportunity in Middle blocker Eric Liebert (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou School) has appeared in 13 games in two seasons with seven kills and eight blocks. Outside hitter Matt McKee (Aurora, Ill./Aurora West HS) has played in 41 games in two seasons with 19 kills. Two players looking to vie for the libero spot have yet to step on the court for the Waves. Sophomore Sean Grubbs (Newport Beach, Calif./Newport Harbor HS) transferred from Irvine Valley College, where he led the team to the state junior college championship. Redshirt freshman Andrew Kurzeka (West Hills, Calif./Notre Dame HS) did not see any action last season. Tom Hulse, a starting middle blocker the last three years, has now graduated. He may be replaced by a family member, as younger brother Mark Hulse (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township HS) has joined the Waves. Mark was the starting setter at Rutgers-Newark the last two seasons, but at 6-foot-8, he s being converted into a middle blocker for the Waves. The Waves had the nation s fourthranked recruiting class according to Volleyball Magazine (the fourth time in the last six years Pepperdine has had a topfi ve class), and three recruits in particular stand out. Setter Kasey Crider (Granite Bay, Calif./Granite Bay HS), middle blocker Tyler Jaynes (Granite Bay, Calif./Granite Bay HS) and outside hitter Cory Riecks (Auburn, Calif./Placer HS) have been part of the U.S. Youth National Team system and were all Volleyball Magazine Fab 50 selections. The three played together for the Northern California Volleyball Club and Crider and Jaynes were prep teammates. Although Crider will be Winder s backup, Jaynes and Riecks are expected to play right away. Other returners looking to help the Waves to a successful 2008 season include senior middle blocker Alex Castillo (Oceanside, Calif./Carlsbad HS), senior middle blocker Brent Smith (Brea, Calif./ Brea Olinda HS/Irvine Valley CC), sophomore middle blocker Patrick Powers (Fort Worth, Texas/Country Day HS), sophomore outside hitter Brent Schirripa (Los Angeles, Calif./Crespi Carmelite HS) and redshirt freshman middle hitter Grant Hilling (Newport Beach, Calif./Northwood HS). In addition to Grubbs and Hulse, junior setter Kyle Luongo (Palmdale, Calif./Highland HS/Pierce CC) is the third transfer to join the Waves this school year. The Waves boast fi ve true freshmen. In addition to Crider, Jaynes and Riecks, outside hitters Chase Ross (Carlsbad, Calif./Carlsbad HS) and Trevor Van Uden (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Thousand Oaks HS) should have promising futures. After the exhibition season ends, MPSF play begins immediately, and Dunphy knows his youngsters will need to be ready from the beginning, as there are no easy nights. There was a time when there were some really good teams and some teams that weren t so good, so you knew going into some matches that if we play well and they play well, we win, said Dunphy, who is assisted by Scott Wong and Craig Choate. Now, I think on a match-by-match basis, we play well, they play well, and it s a battle. The MPSF is a tremendous league. J.D. SCHLEPPENBACH 3 PEPPERDINE FUN FACTS Pepperdine owns the best record in the MPSF since 2002 at (.826), when the conference went to its current round-robin format. Marv Dunphy is one of three coaches in any sport to win an NCAA title in four different decades. After winning the 2005 NCAA title, Pepperdine received national recognition for presenting President George W. Bush with Surfboard One. Pepperdine has had fi ve players become four-time all-conference honorees (Brad Keenan, Sean Rooney, George Roumain, Rod Wilde and Scott Wong). All four Rigg brothers (Doug, Mark, Matt and Scott) won a national title while playing at Pepperdine. The 1985 Pepperdine team was the last to win a national title while running a 6-2 offense. Two freshmen setters (Chip McCaw in 1992 and Jonathan Winder in 2005) led Pepperdine to a national title. Five different Waves have won the NCAA Tournament MVP award. Pepperdine has competed in the Can-Am Challenge 13 consecutive years. Former standout Bob Ctvrtlik is currently the Vice President of the U.S. Olympic Committee and a member of the International Olympic Committee. Former NCAA Player of the Year Brad Keenan was the 2006 AVP Rookie of the Year and earned Most Improved honors in Jeff Stork and Bob Ctvrtlik played in three straight Olympic Games together for the U.S. (1988, 1992 and 1996). Pepperdine men s volleyball players have won a total of eight gold medals for the USA. Craig Buck won two gold medals with the U.S. in 1984 and Dain Blanton won an Olympic gold medal in 2000 in the sport of beach volleyball. Former player George Thompson has had three books published. One was a bestseller titled Millionaires in Training.

4 MARV DUNPHY HEAD COACH 25TH SEASON COACH BIOGRAPHIES Widely recognized as one of the game s premier coaches, Dr. Marv Dunphy has directed Pepperdine to four NCAA men s volleyball titles during his 24 seasons as the Waves head coach. Dunphy, who holds a career record of (.723), is noted for his highly technical approach to the game and diligent training methods. He was the 2005 National Coach of the Year and a three-time MPSF Coach of the Year. As a result of his training, 18 different Waves have earned 30 All-American fi rst team accolades. Pepperdine players have been named All-Americans 45 times under Dunphy s direction. Five different athletes have gone on to earn National Player of the Year honors in Bob Ctvrtlik (1985), George Roumain (1998, 1999), Brad Keenan (2002, 2003), Sean Rooney (2005) and Jonathan Winder (2007). No other men s program has had more POTY recipients than Pepperdine since the American Coaches Volleyball Association began issuing the awards in Dunphy held a long, successful coaching tenure with the U.S. National Team. The American squad maintained a No. 1 world ranking and compiled an impressive overall record of (.864) during his time as coach. Additionally, the team won every major international tournament: the 1985 World Cup, the 1986 World Championships, the 1987 Pan American Games and, most importantly, the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul, South Korea. Nineteen of his Pepperdine volleyball players have represented the U.S. National Team, with nine taking part in the Olympics. In 1994, Dunphy was formally recognized for his immense contribution to the sport, as he was inducted into the Volleyball Hall of Fame in Holyoke, Mass. His 1988 Olympic Team was inducted in the fall of A native of nearby Topanga Canyon, Dunphy was a middle blocker at Pepperdine during the sport s formative years at the intercollegiate level and earned a bachelor s degree in kinesiology from the university in After completing his athletics eligibility, Dunphy continued his affi liation with the Pepperdine program, serving as an assistant coach to both Harlan Cohen and Burt DeGroot before assuming the head coaching duties in The following season, Dunphy led Pepperdine to its fi rst-ever NCAA team championship, as the Waves upended UCLA in fi ve games in Columbus, Ohio, to win the national crown. Dunphy, who earned a master s degree in physical education from USC in 1978, left Pepperdine following the 1978 championship season to obtain his doctorate degree in the same subject area at Brigham Young University. Dunphy completed work for his doctorate in 1981, and then returned to Pepperdine that fall to quickly elevate the program back to national title contention. Pepperdine advanced to the NCAA title match in 1983 and 1984, but the Waves were beaten on both occasions by crosstown foe UCLA. However, the tide turned for the fabled Malibu Roofi ng Company in 1985, as Pepperdine rolled to an impressive 25-2 record still tied as the best single-season mark in school history and defeated USC in four games at Pauley Pavilion to capture the NCAA title. The victory proved to be a perfect farewell gift to Dunphy, who took a leave of absence following the 1985 season to immediately began working with the U.S. National Team at its San Diego base. Under Dunphy s watchful eye, the American squad gained international attention, and PERSONAL Spouse: Su Children: Karen, Alexandra, Dijon Grandchildren: Shay, Trent, Hunter EDUCATION Pepperdine, B.A., 1974 USC, M.A., 1978 Brigham Young, Ed.D., 1981 USA COACHING HIGHLIGHTS 1994 Volleyball Hall of Fame inductee 1985 World Cup champions 1987 Pan Am Games champions 1988 Olympic champions record PEPPERDINE HIGHLIGHTS 4 NCAA championships (1978, 1985, 1992, 2005) 7 conference regular-season championships 3 conference tournament championships 2005 NCAA Coach of the Year 2-time MPSF Coach of the Year (2002, 2005, 2007) 5 NCAA Players of the Year 4 NCAA Freshmen of the Year 30 All-American fi rst teamers 45 All-Americans total 6 MPSF Players of the Year 4 MPSF Freshmen of the Year 18 All-MPSF fi rst teamers 36 All-MPSF recipients 64 all-conference recipients 19 USA National Team members 9 Olympic Team members 6 Olympic gold medals (by 5 athletes) 8 Olympic medals (by 5 athletes) 4

5 COACH BIOGRAPHIES the 12-man roster (which included former Pepperdine standouts Craig Buck, Bob Ctvrtlik, Jeff Stork and Troy Tanner, three of whom were starters) won the gold medal at the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul, South Korea. In Dunphy s absence, Pepperdine captured its third NCAA championship in He returned to the head coaching position in November Upon returning to Malibu, Dunphy hit the recruiting trail and once again rebuilt the program. The Waves reached the pinnacle in 1992, as the team upset Long Beach State to win the MPSF Tournament and then captured its fourth NCAA crown with an impressive three-game sweep of top-ranked Stanford in Muncie, Ind. In 1998, Pepperdine compiled an impressive 23-5 mark and won the MPSF Tournament with a four-game victory over UCLA at Pauley Pavilion. Unfortunately, UCLA gained its revenge in the NCAA title match, defeating Pepperdine in three games. During the 1999 campaign the Waves notched a solid 20-5 mark and senior outside hitter George Roumain was tabbed the AVCA National Player of the Year for the second consecutive season. Roumain was a member of the 2000 Olympic Team along with former Pepperdine players Kevin Barnett and Chip McCaw. Dunphy took another 17-month sabbatical in order to serve as an assistant coach with the U.S. National Team at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia. He returned to Pepperdine in October Pepperdine won the 2002 MPSF regular-season title with a 20-2 mark and then proceeded to win the league s postseason tournament for the second time in three years. Sean Rooney earned the program s fi rst player recognized as the AVCA National Newcomer of the Year. In 2003, Pepperdine went 24-6 overall, including 19-3 in the MPSF, advanced to the title game of the MPSF Tournament and reached the semifi nals of the NCAA Tournament. There, the Waves suffered a hardfought, fi ve-game setback to eventual national champion Lewis, which later vacated the title. In May of 2003, Dunphy was honored as one of four coaches named to the U.S. Volleyball Association s Men s All-Era Team. Dunphy served the U.S. National Team in a scouting and advisory role during the 2003 World Cup in Japan. In 2004, Dunphy traveled to Athens, Greece for the 2004 Olympic Summer Games where he served as a team consultant for the U.S. men s team, which advanced to the bronze medal match. Pepperdine earned the fi fth NCAA title in the program s history in The Waves won the regular-season conference crown before earning the league s automatic bid to the NCAA Championships by claiming the MPSF Tournament title with victories over Cal State Northridge and Long Beach State. Pepperdine swept Ohio State in the national semifi nals before rallying back from a 2-1 defi cit to defeat UCLA, 3-2, in the championship match at Pauley Pavilion, capping off its 25-2 season. That year Dunphy was selected as National Coach of the Year for the fi rst time in his career. He also earned MPSF Coach of the Year honors for the second time after previously picking up the honor in Dunphy earned MPSF Coach of the Year honors again in 2007 as the Waves went 26-3 overall, won both the MPSF regular-season and tournament titles and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the 14th time in school history. During fall 2007, Dunphy rejoined the U.S. National Team for the World Cup in Japan, where he served as team leader. A popular instructor for Pepperdine University s sports medicine department, Dunphy resides in the Decker Canyon area of Malibu with his wife Su. The couple has two daughters, Karen and Alexandra, and one son, Dijon. Alexandra is currently serving as the Pepperdine director of men s volleyball operations. Marv and Su also have three grandchildren, Hunter, Shay and Trent. THE WORD ON MARV DUNPHY... Not only is Marv Dunphy one of the fi nest coaches of the sport of volleyball, but he is the kind of person any parent would love to have their youngster in his program. He is more interested in his player s life after volleyball than he is in their success in the sport itself. John Wooden, Hall of Fame Coach Marv is a fi rst-class guy. He always has good input; he is very reliable and very dignifi ed and knowledgeable. He really is an all-around good guy. Al Monaco, President USA Volleyball Marv is one of the most respected coaches in the country. He has a unique passion for teaching and boundless energy. He enjoys working one-onone with players to develop their skills and never stops teaching. Dr. Doug Beal, CEO USA Volleyball Marv is a wonderful friend and when he is your friend, he is a friend for life. He honestly cares about you and your well-being. There is a wonderful presence about him and his presence is very commanding. Marv comes from a great volleyball background and is a marvelous volleyball coach. Dr. Carl McGown, Former U.S. National Coach One of the greatest things about Marv is the way he carries himself. He is a very classy guy with integrity who is always poised. He is a great example for those going into his program. I believe Marv is the best coach in college volleyball and was why I chose to go to Pepperdine. He is a straightforward guy who is honest with his players. If you trust him and listen to what he has to say, he can take you to the top like he did with us in Dain Blanton, Former Player and Olympic Gold Medalist We used to call him the maker of men. Marv has great leadership qualities and we as players looked up to him as a mentor, not just in volleyball, but in life as well. We made a commitment to a higher standard and could look to him as an example of that standard. Mike Blanchard, Former Player MARV DUNPHY S PEPPERDINE RECORD Overall Conf. NCAA Year W-L Pct. W-L Pct.
