2 Welcome to the HeartSmart Walks programme for October 2018 to January 2019 These walks are led by volunteer Walk Leaders and are designed to cater for all ages and abilities. The walks offer opportunities to exercise and meet new people in a safe and friendly environment. Below is some information to help you get the most out of them: All walks finish at their starting point unless otherwise stated. No booking is required but please arrive 10 minutes before the walk is due to start. Please inform the Walk Leader if you will be leaving the walk early and sign yourself out. We recommend always bringing a mobile phone with the number below stored in case of emergency. Please wear suitable footwear and you may like to bring a drink of water. Please note that the walks are smoke free. Dogs are welcome unless otherwise stated but must be kept on the lead. Timings stated on the programme are approximate. If the weather is poor the walk may be cancelled. Please check with the office or website if unsure (office hours Mon-Fri 8.45am-5pm). Please read the walk description before joining the walk and ensure you are walking at the right level for you. 3 Travelling by bus To plan your route by bus please visit Car Sharing We would like to encourage all walkers to car share. This would be beneficial to the environment and also enable walkers who do not have access to a car to go on more walks. Have a chat with your fellow walkers to arrange this. Mon 1st Oct - 10:30am PETWORTH VIA VIRGIN MARY SPRING L: Gerald M: Time: 1 hr 30 mins. Distance: 3 miles. See the beautiful East side of Petworth. A flat countryside walk out south east of the town and return via the Haslingbourne brook and the Virgin Mary Spring - famous for curing sore eyes since medieval times. Meet: Petworth Library, Rosemary Lane, High St, Petworth GU28 0AU. Inside Library if wet. By Car: Park in main Petworth town centre car park (ample room) & 3 minute walk east from toilets, up passageway to Rosemary Lane. Library on left. If coming via High Street, opp. Petworth Cottage Museum. Contact Gerald if uncertain, on Dogs welcome. By Bus: 1 from Midhurst or Worthing to Petworth Market Square, and then a 3 minute walk. Mon 1st Oct - 10:30am SUITABLE FOR BEGINNERS CHICHESTER CANAL beginners. Tue 2nd Oct - 10:30am SLINDON PUMPKIN DISPLAY L: Janet H M: Ann Time: 1 hr 30 mins Distance: 3½ miles. A walk through the woods and up onto the Downs. Walking back through Slindon Village, stopping briefly at the Slindon Pumpkin Display Meet: National Trust Car Park, Park Lane, Slindon, BN18. By Car: Take A27 eastward from Chichester. At Fontwell roundabout continue on A27 until you reach the next roundabout (¼ mile approx). At this roundabout take first left (A29 Pulborough/Amberley) and immediately turn left into Park Lane. Car park is ¾ mile on the left.

4 Tue 2nd Oct - 10:30am *NEW WALK* WEY ARUN CANAL (LOXWOOD) L: Richard M: Claire Time: 1 hr 30 mins Distance: Approx 3.5 miles. Come and enjoy a level walk taking us out along the towpath and returning through woodland and farmland. No stiles but one short steepish descent. Meet: Canal visitor centre car park behind the Onslow Arms pub in Loxwood. By Car: From Petworth take A272 towards Wisborough Green. Turn left by the green, pass the Cricketers pub, and continue to the end of this road where you turn left. Carry on North on the B2133 into Loxwood, where, at the bottom of the hill you will see the Onslow Arms on the right. Pass through the pub car park to the canal car park at the rear. RH14 0RD N W Wed 3rd Oct - 10:30am *NEW WALK* CLAPHAM WOODS, LONG FURLONG & CHURCH HILL L: Simon & Rebekah M: Time: 2hrs 30mins Distance: A 5 mile walk starting at Clapham (Saint Mary the Virgin) Church walking through Clapham Woods and along the top of Long Furlong, with stunning views across the Downs, down and around Church Hill and back through the enchanting Clapham Woods to the village and back to the car park. There are some stiles along the way and hilly at times around Church Hill. Meet: Clapham Saint Mary the Virgin Church, Clapham, Worthing, BN13 3XR. Limited space at Clapham Church car park. By Car: Drive through the village and up the track towards the Church and Church Copse. Keep left going past Church Close and then where the road splits into three take the middle lane that leads to the Church car park. Thurs 4th Oct - 10:30am *NEW WALK* CHANTRY HILL AND BLACKPATCH HILL L: Jane M: Peter D Time: 2hrs 45mins Distance: 6.25miles A Downland walk with lovely views towards the coast. No stiles but a hilly walk with some uneven ground. Meet: at Chantry Post. By Car: Follow the A283 to Storrington. As you leave Storrington heading east, take the second turning on the right - Chantry Lane. Follow this narrow lane all the way up to the top of the Downs where there is a car park. Grid Ref: Explorer 121 TQ Fri 5th Oct - 10:30am *NEW WALK* KIRDFORD L: Richard M: Time: 1 hr 30 mins Distance: Approx. 3.5 miles. Enjoy a level walk, which, after a start on narrow footpaths, opens out onto open farmland and through fields, some of which have cattle grazing, therefore I m afraid no dogs. We return past a fish farm and through woodland. A number of stiles to negotiate. Meet: In front of the Half Moon pub in Kirdford. By Car: From Petworth take the A283 north, then after the Stone Masons Inn take the right fork by the green to Balls Cross. Continue along this road and eventually you will arrive at the village of Kirdford. At the T- junction at the far end of the village turn right and park in the road opposite the Half Moon (not in their parking spaces). RH14 0LT.

5 Mon 8th Oct - 10:30am SUITABLE FOR BEGINNERS CHICHESTER CANAL beginners Wed 10th Oct 10am NOTE EARLIER START TIME CHICHESTER CATHEDRAL TO BOSHAM L: Jane M: Ann Time: 2 hrs Distance: A flat 4 mile walk starts at the Cathedral, it takes an urban route quickly out of the city to reach meadows, fields and shoreline, to reach the village of Bosham. It can be muddy and uneven underfoot and does have stiles. We will be returning by bus, please bring bus pass or money for the fare. There are coffee shops in Bosham if people wish to stay on. Meet: Chichester Cathedral PO19 1PX. NOTE EARLIER START TIME OF 10AM TO FIT IN WITH THE BUS TIMES BACK. By Car: Car parks are available in Chichester but you will need to bring money for parking and either a bus pass or money for the bus back to Chichester. By Bus: Chichester is served by good bus routes. Wed 10th Oct - 10:30am *NEW WALK* TILLINGTON - HALFWAY BRIDGE L: Bruce M: Peter D Time: 2 hrs 15 min. Distance: 4.5 miles. Ascent 130m. A moderately strenuous walk with one steep climb and 9 stiles. Goes through Lodsworth, Lords Wood Barn and River Common Meet: Tillington Halfway Bridge. SU (Nearby postcode GU28 0PQ) Phone By Car: On the A miles from Easebourne or 2.8 miles from Petworth. Park in the side road 300 yards to the east of the Halfway Bridge Inn. By Bus: 1 from Petworth or Midhurst Thurs 11th Oct - 10:30am EARTHAM WOODS STANE STREET L: Peter Br M: Time: 2 hrs Distance: 4 mile walk up into Eartham woods and back down Stane Street. Ups and downs with one short steep climb. Meet: Free Forestry Commission car park on the right, ¾ of a mile north of The George PH at Eartham. Map ref SU PO18 0LU By Car: Take A27 Chichester bypass towards Arundel. Half a mile before Fontwell turn left following signs to Eartham, after Z bend pass The George PH and continue north to Forestry Commission car park. Alternatively take the A285 Petworth road from Chichester take the 2nd right hand turn to Eartham and the car park is on the left of the road. SOUTH DOWNS SOCIETY WALK not a Heartsmart Walk NOTE EARLIER START TIME Sat 13th Oct - 10am HEYSHOTT STROLL with friends of the South Downs L: George M: Time: 5 hrs Distance: Approx. 7.5 miles. Circular stroll from one quiet village to another. Pub lunch (or bring picnic) at Graffham. Fairly flat stroll with views of the Downs. Can be muddy in places after heavy rain. No dogs please. Meet: 10am Heyshott Village. Park near the church, GU29 0DJ (nearest).

Allow sufficient time in the car park. Meet: Meet in Emsworth town square. PO10 7AW By Car: Take the A259 from Chichester to Emsworth. At the roundabout turn left into the town centre; the town square is on the right hand side. Car park through town on the right By Bus: 700 Tue 16th Oct - 10:30am TORTINGTON COMMON L: Chloë M: Time: 1hr 30 mins Distance: A 3.5 mile woodland walk around Tortington Common and Binsted wood. A flat route without stiles but be prepared for muddy sections. Meet: Park on Dalloway Road nr. Birch Lane - BN18 9HW. By Car: From the Ford Road Roundabout in Arundel, take the exit onto Ford Road and then turn right onto Torton Hill Road. Follow Torton Hill Road and then continue straight onto Dalloway Road and park near Birch Lane. Wed 17th Oct - 10:45am CLIMPING L: Dominic M: Time: 1hr 15mins Distance: Approx. 2½ miles. Along dunes and beach to Climping Mill, then across fields to Ferry Road and Rope Walk to club. Refreshments are available at the Yacht Club on the return. Meet: 10.45am (to allow for train) at Arun Yacht Club Car Park, Rope Walk, Littlehampton, West Sussex, BN17 5DL. Your support to the club in buying refreshments is appreciated in return for free parking. By Car: Take the A259, Bognor Littlehampton Road. About ¼ mile east of Ford Road roundabout turn south into Ferry Road. Follow signs for beach and Golf Course onto Rope Walk. The Yacht Club is on west bank of the river opposite the Golf Club at the top of the slope. By Bus/Train: Across the footbridge opposite Littlehampton station. Turn left, the Yacht Club is about 1/3 of a mile ahead.

7 SOUTH DOWNS SOCIETY WALK this is not a HeartSmart Walk NOTE EARLIER START TIME Thurs 18th Oct - 10:00am ROMANS FOR THE DAY L: Robert M: Time: 3 hrs Distance: Approx. 6 miles. Eartham is one of the best places from which to enjoy a walk along the great Roman road of Stane Street - which linked Roman Chichester and London. The run of the road here is fairly uninterrupted from Eartham Woods all the way to Glatting Beacon, 245 metres above sea level and there are great views towards Chichester, the Solent and Isle of Wight beyond it. The route will take in Stane Street, Gumber Farm, Glatting Beacon, Eartham Wood. Pub, (The George, Eartham) at end. Meet: 10am Eartham Wood Car Park, PO18 0NA. A lovely walk along lanes and through woods via the villages of North and South Stoke. It will be muddy in places if it has rained recently. Four stiles. Meet: Amberley Station Car Park BN18 9LR By Car: A27 to Fontwell, A29 to Whiteways roundabout then B2139 to Amberley Sun 21st Oct - 10:30am BINSTED WOODS extended to the Swan and back via Madonna Pond L: Dominic M: Time: 2 hrs 30 mins Distance: 4.25 miles, mainly flat headland path, grass, gravel. Coffee will be available at the shop. This walk is extended to The Swan along Scotland Lane Meet: Walberton Village Hall car park, The Street, Walberton, Arundel, BN18 0PQ. By Car: When heading from Chichester to Arundel on the A27 follow signs to Walberton Village. Mon 22nd Oct - 10:30am BOXGROVE TO HALNAKER WINDMILL L: Anne M: Ann & Peter D Time: Approx. 2 hrs Distance: Approx. 3.5 miles. Through the fields then up Mill Lane to the Windmill. A fairly gentle stroll up the hill. There are some stiles. Meet: Car park by the Village Hall in Boxgrove By Car: Take the Boxgrove Road off the A27 and park opposite the Priory in the car park. Mon 22nd Oct - 10:30am SUITABLE FOR BEGINNERS CHICHESTER CANAL Time: 30mins Distance: 1 mile. A flat walk at a gentle pace, suitable for beginners

8 Tue 23rd Oct - 10:30am COMPTON TO TELEGRAPH HILL L: Peter and Alison M: Time: 1 hr 30 mins Distance: 3 miles. Climbing up through woodland to the top of Telegraph Hill with lovely views of the south coast and across to Uppark. No stiles. Meet: Compton Recreation Ground car park. By Car: Take the B2178 from Chichester, turning right at Funtington into Hares Lane and right again on to the B2146. Continue on the B2146 through West Marden and the recreation ground is on your right as you enter Compton village. Wed 24th Oct - 10:30am PETERSFIELD HEATH POND L: Bruce M: Peter D Time: 2 hrs 20 mins Distance: 5 miles. Ascent 50m. Flat walk taking in part of the Serpent Trail towards Durford. Meet: Petersfield Heath Pond. SU ( Nearest postcode GU31 4LD ) By Car: A286 to Lavant B2141 to South Harting and B2146 toward Petersfield Thurs 25th Oct - 10:30am *HEATHLANDS REUNITED CHAPEL COMMON HEALTHY HEATH WALK* L: Andy M: Time: 1 hr 30 mins Distance: 2 miles: a level, easy going walk on heathland tracks, including part of the Serpents Trail looking at some of the special features of our Heathland Heritage. On land managed by the South Downs National Park Authority (on behalf of landowner, Mr Mir) and delivered as part of the Heathlands Reunited Project ( Meet: Parking area - GU33 7JL By Car: From B2070 (Rake to Liphook) take turning north, 0.25 mile after Rake C of E School, towards Langley Court (post code GU33 7JL). Parking area 200m along track on right hand side (Grid Ref SU813282) By Bus: No Service Fri 26th Oct - 10:30am GOODWOOD COUNTRY PARK L: Peter B M: Alison & Peter Time: 2 hrs Distance: Approx. 4 miles walk through the woods around Goodwood and Halnaker with a long up slope on the return journey. Meet: Free car park on the right after passing Goodwood racecourse (not the parks opposite the course), map ref SU PO18 0PS By Car: Up Kennel Hill towards the racecourse, passing the golf club. Turn right alongside the racecourse until a right hand bend after the end of the racecourse. Car park is on the right soon after the bend. Meet: Recreation Ground off Links Lane By Car: Take the A27 west from Chichester towards Havant and take the exit towards Langstone. At the roundabout take the third exit onto Park Road S/B2149, go through two roundabouts. At the next roundabout take the second exit onto Redhill Road. Turn left towards Links Lane and turn left at Links Lane. Turn right to Recreation Ground opposite Village Hall. PO9 6AQ

Tue 30 th Oct - 10:30am CHICHESTER CANAL L: Janet M: Time: 1hr 30mins Distance: 3½ miles level. Return by bus. Bring bus pass or money for fare. Can be muddy in places when wet. Wharf. Limited parking but plenty of public car parks available in the city centre. Wed 31st Oct - 10:30am BLACK RABBIT L: Dominic M: Time: 2 hrs Distance: 5 miles, easy, flat riverside walk, no stiles Meet: Mill Road car park by river in town centre (charge) BN18 9AA By Car: A27 to Arundel town centre. At bottom of hill turn left before river, car park on right. Thurs 1st Nov - 10:30am *NEW WALK* FAIRMILE BOTTOM L: Peter B M: Time: 2 hrs 30 mins Distance: 4.5 miles. Circular walk through the Downland nature reserve towards Arundel. Meet: Park alongside the A29 soon after the Madehurst turn, close to the green and white "Bridleway" sign. By Car: A27 to Fontwell then A29 north to parking place. Fri 2nd Nov - 10:30am *NEW WALK* EARTHAM TO GUMBER FARM L: Simon M: Peter D Time: 2 hrs Distance: 4 miles. 2 hour circular walk starting from the free Forestry Commission car park at Eartham through Eartham Woods to Gumber Farm and back along Stane Street. Meet: The free Forestry Commission car park at Eartham By Car: The car park is half a mile north of Eartham village. Eartham is signed off the A27 just west of the Fontwell roundabout along Brittens Lane. Alternatively take the A285 Petworth road from Chichester with sharp right turn towards Eartham with the car park soon after on the left. Mon 5th Nov - 10:30am PARHAM PARK AND WIGGINHOLT L: Jane M: Peter D Time: 2 hrs 30 mins Distance: 5 Miles. A flat walk with lovely views of surrounding countryside. This walk has stiles. Meet: Parham Park, West Lodges, Rackham Street, OS map 121 grid ref By Car: From the B2139 either turn into Amberley Village and keep following the lane east until you reach the lodges and the park entrance or continue further on the B2139 toward Storrington and take a left turn to Rackham. West Lodges are situated where the road forks. Parking is at the side of the road.

Fairly level, good walking path, no stiles. Meet: Along Sheepwash Lane, by the recreation ground in Lavant. PO18 0AT By Car: Take A286 (Broyle Road) from Chichester to Lavant, right at roundabout. First left after recreation ground (Sheepwash Lane) park on roadside. By Bus: 60 Chichester to Lavant. Walk down road past pub to Sheepwash Lane and River Lavant Wed 7th Nov - 10:30am *NEW WALK* EMSWORTH - DYMOKE STREET L: Bruce M: Peter D Time: 2 hrs 15mins. Distance: 4.2 miles. Ascent 50m. A leisurely walk exploring Emsworth Common. Meet: Emsworth Dymoke St Car Park. SU ( Nearby postcode PO10 7XL ) By Car: Head north on the B2148 for 1.2 miles after Emsworth Station. Turn right onto Southleigh Rd, left onto Cotton Dr, left onto Spencer Rd, right onto Woolmer St, and left onto Dymoke St. Phone Thurs 8th Nov - 10:30am PETWORTH PARK to see the Deer L: Gerald M: Time: 1 hr 30 mins Distance: 3 miles. Come and see the fallow deer in Petworth Park. Meet: The Horse Guards Inn, Upperton Road, Tillington, GU28 9AF. SU By Car: 1 mile west from Petworth on A272, then, in the middle of Tillington, turn north following brown tourist sign to The Horse Guards. Parking in road. Contact Gerald if uncertain on Dogs welcome. By Bus: No 1 from Midhurst or Worthing and alight at Tillington (Upperton Road stop). Fri 9th Nov - 10:30am *NEW WALK* SALVINGTON HILL L: Peter B M: Peter D Time: 2 hrs Distance: 3.5 miles Circular walk towards Findon with superb views and excellent Autumn foraging (berries). Meet: Car park on the left at the end of Honeysuckle Lane. By Car: A27 through Arundel until the end of the dual carriageway at the edge of Worthing (speed camera). Turn left after Swandean Hospital signed High Salvington and continue straight on Honeysuckle Lane. Sat 10th Nov - 10:30am *ALL DAY WALK* BURPHAM L: Dominic M: Time: all day Distance: approx. 7 miles. Hilly walk with some stiles. Lovely views. Meet: The public car park behind the George at Burpham BN18 9RR. By Car: Travelling east out of Arundel, take the first turning left after the railway bridge and follow the signs to Burpham village.the car park is accessed behind the pub. Bring plenty of water & lunch.

11 Mon 12th Nov - 10:30am EMSWORTH TO WESTBOURNE SQUARE L: Anne A M: Time: 1 hr 30 mins Distance: 3 miles. Through meadows to Emsworth and back. Meet: In Emsworth Town Square. Park in public car park (pay & display) by information board. Note: Please ensure you put enough money in the car park, you may need more than 2 hours parking. PO10 7AW By Car: Take the A259 from Chichester to Emsworth. At the roundabout turn left into the town centre, the town square is on the right hand side. By Bus: 700 Mon 12th Nov - 10:30am SUITABLE FOR BEGINNERS CHICHESTER CANAL beginners Tue 13th Nov - 10:30am *NEW WALK* WISBOROUGH GREEN L: Richard M: Peter D Time: 2 hrs Distance: Approx 4 miles. From Wisborough Green we walk along a quiet country lane to the river Arun and the unrestored section of the Wey Arun canal, which we follow to an old lock and water wheel, which was used to raise water from the river to the canal. The walk is level with 10+ stiles on route, and 100 yds of busy road to negotiate, otherwise very quiet and peaceful. Fields with livestock, therefore sorry, no dogs. Meet: In village hall car park by church in Wisborough Green. By Car: From Petworth take A272 to Wisborough Green. Turn left just after the Three Crowns by the duck pond. Take next right into car park. RH14 0DZ N W Wed 14th Nov - 10:30am KINGLEY VALE L: Alison and Peter M: Time: 2 hrs Distance: 4 miles. Enjoy a walk around the perimeter of this beautiful Nature Reserve containing one of the finest yew forests in Europe. A long uphill stretch to start is rewarded by fabulous views out across the south coast. No stiles. You can choose to visit the reserve after the walk if you wish. Meet: West Stoke car park, Downs Road PO18 9BE By Car: Take the B2178 from Chichester and at East Ashling there is a right hand turn signposted to the National Nature Reserve. Continue northwards on this road until you reach the car park. Thurs 15th Nov - 10:30am ANGMERING PARK & HAMMERPOT L: Peter B M: Time: 2 hrs Distance: 4 mile mainly flat walk through woods and meadows. Meet: Car park in the woods at the Dover BN18 9PX. Map ref TQ By Car: A27 through Arundel and Dover Street is signed on the left after 2 miles (before The Woodman Arms where the A27 goes uphill).

12 Thurs 15th Nov - 10:30am *HEATHLANDS REUNITED IRON HILL HEALTHY HEATH WALK* L: Andy M: Time: 1hr 30mins Distance: 2 miles, a level, easy going walk on forestry tracks looking at some of the special features of our Heathland Heritage. On land Managed by the Forestry Commission and delivered as part of the Heathlands Reunited Project ( Meet: Forestry Commission car park By Car: From north or south follow signs to Hollycombe steam Collection (south of Liphook). Forestry Commission Car Park is 0.3 mile north of entrance to Steam Collection entrance off minor road By Bus: No service Fri 16th Nov - 10:30am CHILGROVE HILL L: Jane M: Time: 2hrs Distance: 4 miles. An uphill walk through Wildhams Wood to Bow Hill Farm and back along Chilgrove Hill with lovely views. Meet: Stoughton Down car park - Forestry Commission car park east of Stoughton on the sharp bend (SU815126) nearest postcode PO18 9JQ. By Car: B2178 from Chichester, turning right at Funtington into Hares Lane and right again on to the B2146. Turn right on to Walderton Stoughton Road, continue through the two villages until you reach the Forestry Commission car park on the right. Mon 19th Nov - 10:30am EMSWORTH TO POOK LANE L: Anne A M: Ann Time: 1 hr 30 mins Distance: 3 miles level walk along the shore. Meet: Emsworth square. PO10 7AW By Car: Take the A259 from Chichester to Emsworth. At the roundabout turn left into the town centre, the town square is on the right hand side. Note: You need to pay for parking. By Bus: 700 bus to Emsworth square. It also passes by recently restored viewpoints from the North end of the Upper Pond. The fallow deer, long views and great trees make for a compelling walk. This is a South Downs Society Walk. The walk is level with 10+ stiles on route, and 100 yards of busy road to negotiate, otherwise very quiet and peaceful. Fields with stock, therefore sorry, no dogs.
