3 Welcome to our exciting new adventure for 2019 GO wild gorillas brightly coloured, artist imagined, life-size gorilla sculptures will be placed across the island and will lead people on a trail of discovery, not only to see the gorillas themselves, but the nature in which they are placed is the 60th anniversary of the Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust, and we wanted to mark the year with a large-scale, community project involving subjects close to our hearts, namely our beautiful gorilla family at the zoo and our new strategy to connect people to nature. Durrell has always been at the forefront of conservation and our aim to better connect 1 million people to nature by 2025 continues that tradition. There are several pathways to connection, with beauty being amongst the most important. People who are better connected to nature are healthier, more productive, more engaged, and this event will get people outdoors and help us in our aims of protecting precious wildlife. We also know that art itself is an important way to feel engaged. Art-connectedness can lead to nature-connectedness, whether that be by making art or appreciating the work of the local and international artists that you will see on the trail. We will also, in the near future, be building a new indoor house for our gorillas, expanding it to be more complex, exciting and comfortable for Badongo, our silverback, and his family. This sculpture trail marks the launch of our fundraising efforts to create the best gorilla house to care for our beloved gorillas. 4 Why Gorillas? Gorillas are majestic, powerful yet gentle animals, and one of our closest living relatives. But they are in peril. All four subspecies of gorilla are under threat due to habitat loss, hunting, wildlife trade, and the spread of infectious disease. Jersey Zoo has been home to western lowland gorillas for nearly 60 years. We have cared for three silverbacks and their families, and successfully bred over 20 individuals. As part of our commitment to the conservation of the species we bring gorilla rangers from Africa to Jersey each year to train with staff here. The current zoo habitat boasts an extensive outside area where gorillas roam amongst natural vegetation. The indoor area, however, requires redevelopment. We have a bold and exciting plan for a major extension to the existing building, which will create: Two new, large exhibition dens, quadrupling the size of the existing areas. The interiors will feature a biofloor with natural features within. An advanced, translucent roof that allows full natural daylight to flood in. A row of smaller dens where we can manage animals at close quarters. An additional, extensive outside area and bedroom dens, for their health and well being. A stunning visitor interpretation area, where gorillas pass overhead. This development, utilising the latest construction methods, incorporates the best design features taken from modern gorilla builds around the world. It will provide an advanced gorilla home habitat, providing the optimum conditions for their welfare, not just for today but well into the future. Badongo DATE OF BIRTH 27 September 1999 PLACE OF BIRTH Vallée des Singes Park, France Badongo is our resident silverback gorilla, the leader of the group. it s his responsibility to protect the group from perceived threats and maintain order, intervening when there are squabbles. Badongo s mother, Virunga, is one of the last gorillas in any European zoo to have been born in the wild and therefore his offspring will make important contributions to the gorilla gene pool in zoos. Badongo is a patient and attentive father, often seen playing with his son, Indigo. Bahasha DATE OF BIRTH 23 April 1994 PLACE OF BIRTH Melbourne Zoo, Australia Bahasha is our youngest adult female. She arrived in Jersey in 2001 from Melbourne Zoo, and since then her confidence has gradually grown. Today she enjoys a central role within the group. She has been an enthusiastic playmate to younger gorillas here, and we hope that one day she will have offspring of her own.

5 Hlala Kahilli DATE OF BIRTH 23 January 1988 PLACE OF BIRTH Jersey Zoo Hlala Kahilli is the daughter of Jambo, Durrell s first silverback. She grew up surrounded by her many siblings. She has a quiet, self-assured nature and has always charmed and bonded with any new male joining the Durrell gorilla group. In 2012 she gave birth to her fourth offspring, Indigo. Kishka DATE OF BIRTH 9 November 1978 PLACE OF BIRTH Howletts Wild Animal Park, UK Kishka is the oldest gorilla at Durrell. She had a daughter with Durrell s first silverback, Jambo. Despite her gentle, unassuming nature, Kishka is a strong and stable character. Following the death of Jambo in 1992 she took on a matriarchal role, helping the family through the period of transition. Indigo DATE OF BIRTH 27 September 2012 PLACE OF BIRTH Jersey Zoo Indigo shares his birthday with his father, Badongo. Like most young gorillas Indigo has a lively and mischievous nature. He enjoys playing with other members of the group, who are, in general, only too happy to oblige. As he matures, he will become increasingly independent of his mother, Hlala Kahilli.

6 What is the GO wild gorillas PROJEct? A celebration of 60 years of Durrell s dedication and long-term commitment to make a difference to the world we leave for future generations. A vital part of Durrell s strategy to rewild species and ecosystems as well as people and places. A mass exhibition of public art to engage communities, raise awareness and funds. A platform that showcases the wealth of creativity on our islands and invites international artists to join. An innovative and exciting art trail around the town centre, parks, open spaces and parishes of our island. An event that will positively contribute to the economic, cultural and social life of our island. Many months of fun events for all ages and activities that will make people smile and build community pride. 7 how it works Go Wild Gorillas will connect corporate, public and community partners around our islands providing a new and uniquely creative avenue for collaboration, united to support conservation. Businesses, individuals and groups are invited to sponsor a blank Go Wild Gorilla sculpture - the canvas. Over 30 individually designed Gorillas will go on display through our town centre, parks, open spaces, parishes of Jersey and our neighbouring Channel Islands, taking people on a journey of discovery whilst connecting them to art and nature. ARTISTS well-known, emerging and as yet, undiscovered artists are invited to submit designs which are presented to sponsors who select their own unique piece of artwork. The successful artists are commissioned to customise each sculpture. SCHOOLS AND COLLEGES will also join the fun, adopting and designing their own smaller young gorillas whilst engaging in a learning programme all about gorillas and the work at Durrell. Go Wild Gorillas will also give COMMUNITY GROUPS the opportunity to work with local artists to create their own young gorilla. These designs will have their own shop window trail before returning to live permanently with their adopted school or community group family. RESIDENTS AND VISITORS will explore the trail using the Go Wild Gorillas app, which will help them navigate around the island, discover new places and unlock exciting sponsor rewards generating phenomenal levels of engagement and interaction. At the end of the trail the troop will come together for a special gorilla gathering, giving people the chance to see the gorillas together, take their final selfies, meet some of the artists who created them and maybe choose one to bid for in the Auction! The Grand Gorilla Auction in the autumn will be a glittering celebration and opportunity to raise vital funds for Durrell and the new home for our gorillas at Jersey Zoo. 12 60th Anniversary Celebrations In 2019, Go Wild Gorillas brings together Durrell s positive and bold strategy for conservation with the celebration of our 60th Anniversary. We aim to deliver a world-class sculpture trail and creative learning programme which can be enjoyed by islanders and visitors to Jersey, as well as our neighbouring Channel Islands. This is a celebration of the remarkable work achieved at Jersey Zoo and in the wild to protect species from extinction. This vital mission has only been possible due to the dedication and passion of Durrell supporters. As well as an exhibition of public art spanning three months at the height of summer, there will be opportunities for schools, community groups, and businesses to join in, be creative, and attend a range of special events. The finale will be a spectacular auction of the sculptures with all funds raised contributing to a new state-of-the-art home for the gorillas at Jersey Zoo. Rewild Our World Durrell s new strategy focuses on rewilding and we have set ourselves bold and ambitious targets to achieve by 2025 when our founder, Gerald Durrell, would have celebrated his 100th birthday.
