Auburn Area Recreation and Park District Annual Report FY 2011/2012
A Letter from the ARD Staff We are happy to provide this report of the Auburn Area Recreation and Park District (ARD) activities for the April 1, 2011 March 31, 2012 Fiscal Year. Your local Parks and Recreation District is strong and thriving, and despite the continued global economic problems, wonderful services and gorgeous parks are still being shared in the Auburn area. This report is a summary of the 2011/2012 activities, improvements and fiscal health of ARD. While this report is nowhere near all-encompassing, it does offer a good review of the highlights from the past year. Detailed information is available for anything listed in this report. Please feel free to call or contact ARD for this or any question. Enjoy the look back at another successful year at ARD! Yours in recreation, health and fun, The ARD Staff 2 FY 11/12 Annual Report

Parks and Facilities Placer Hills Pool renovation and re-opening: ARD partnered with a multitude of community volunteers to re-open one of Meadow Vista s favorite facilities. The renovation included a new pool shell, new pool equipment, new deck and a remodeled bathroom facility. The following fall, Eagle Scout prospect Michael Balaguy and a group of volunteers erected a new shade structure at the corner of the pool deck. Progress on acquiring PG&E properties: ARD staff, working with representatives from the PG&E Stewardship Council, put together plans to acquire 64 acres of property through a PG&E fee-title donation program. The Stewardship Council Board gave their approval to the plans, a vital first step in a multi-phased approval process. Ashley Memorial Dog Park continues to improve: Volunteers with the Ashley Memorial Dog Park collected several thousand dollars in cash to help complete the sidewalk on the inner portion of this well-used Auburn landmark. Recreation Park Community Center ramp: An ADA compliant ramp was installed in the lobby at Recreation Park, resulting in more open and attractive space for the heavily visited facility. Union Pacific grants funds to protect a playground: Union Pacific Railroad provided a grant to install security cameras at the new Recreation Park playground. This new playground, constructed in FY 10/11, replaced a playground that had been destroyed by arson. Rattlesnake invasion: The spring and summer of 2011 found ARD staff removing an inordinate amount of rattlesnakes from the parks. Despite increased staff vigilance, a park visitor sustained a bite while walking near Sierra Pool at Recreation Park. Atwood Park gets a spruce-up: The Atwood III Homeowners Association paid for new turf and landscape improvements around the playground located adjacent to the Nature Preserve. This new turf replaced a field of natural turf and weeds that were planted as part of the original park design. Community Tree Planting Day at Railhead Park: Community volunteers worked with ARD staff to plant 43 trees at Railhead Park, part of an overall plan that saw over 400 trees planted throughout the District. These trees and some of the associated costs were paid for with a Cal Fire grant. 4 FY 11/12 Annual Report
Recreation and Youth Services ARD welcomes Chipper: Weighing and debating input from community members and staff, the ARD Board of Directors selected a squirrel as the ARD mascot. ARD then enlisted the help of the children in the ARD Discovery Club program to help with a name. Vance Byer, a Skyridge Elementary student, suggested the name Chipper, and a mascot was born. Indoor pickle ball: A grassroots movement to find gym time for indoor pickle ball met with great success as participation continued to grow throughout the year. Although temporary court lines are put down each day, permanent pickle ball court lines will be part of the new floor at the Recreation Park gym. ARD-YDL youth basketball sees a slight uptick in registration: After several years of declining enrollment, ARD-YDL, the largest youth basketball league in the area, saw a small increase in registrations. Summer Day Camp has the best field trips: Field trips for ARD s Summer Day Camp included visiting the Folsom Zoo, cooling off at Sunsplash, and knocking down pins at Strikes Bowling. As is typical every year, campers had the opportunity to swim at Sierra Pool and enjoy the fantastic playgrounds and ball fields at Recreation Park. Zumba is everywhere: This new fitness craze, combining Latin music and dance, could be found at several locations throughout the District, including Recreation Park, Regional Park and the Canyon View Community Center. Hula grows: ARD s hula classes, offering lessons for beginners to intermediates, saw solid numbers throughout the year. Movies combine with family swimming for a night of fun: ARD once again offered three different Movie in the Park nights, combining two of these free events with Family Swim Night at Sierra Pool. Movies included E.T., Jaws and Grease, all drawing big crowds and smiling faces. Internet Safety: ARD s Youth Services sponsored an Internet Safety presentation at the Skyridge Elementary PTC meeting. 5 FY 11/12 Annual Report
Events Skeet Reese Kids Fishing Day brings smiles to Meadow Vista: Local professional bass angler Skeet Reese and his wife Kim held a fund raising fishing derby at Meadow Vista Park. Over 250 kids and parents showed up to support the derby, and all proceeds were donated to the Meadow Vista Community Center. AMGEN Tour of California races through town: ARD played a role in the historic AMGEN Tour of California bike race that started in downtown Auburn. ARD employee Manouch Shirvanioun sat on the local steering committee, and a preamgen family fun day at Recreation Park brought out young and old alike to take part in rides and games. Placer High Safe and Sober Grad Night transforms the Recreation Park Community Center: Every year, an armada of volunteers gives the Recreation Park Community Center a make-over, providing recent Placer High graduates a place to safely meet and celebrate their accomplishments. The American River Confluence Festival is now a successful two day event: The Confluence Festival, a long standing celebration of everything that the spectacular river and surrounding area has to offer, has made a successful transition to a two day event. The Saturday evening Wine Tasting features outstanding local wineries and provides an ideal segue into the Sunday Confluence Festival. Party in the Park brings a big crowd: Party in the Park, a must attend event in Auburn, drew its second biggest crowd ever with a double bill featuring Mumbo Gumbo and Great American Taxi. The always free-to-attend party helped raise money for local service clubs and let everyone enjoy a beautiful summer evening. Todd Peek honored with the ARD Friend of Recreation award: Local volunteer and youth sports supporter Todd Peek was given the ARD Friend of Recreation award at the Auburn State of the Community Dinner. Todd is a past president of the Placer Jr. Hillmen football organization, board member with the Auburn Little League and current president of the Placer High football boosters club. Auburn Community Festival pumpkin sets a new record: Granite Bay resident Richard Westervelt set a new Auburn Community Festival record with a 1,294 lb. pumpkin. The giant gourd was just one of many attractions at the 15th annual event, drawing several thousand people to the always superb Recreation Park. 6 FY 11/12 Annual Report
