1 To: Mid America Regional Council From: Louisburg Recreation Commission March 6, 2018 The Louisburg Recreation Commission offers their support to the Metcalf Road Complete Street Project in Louisburg. We understand that Miami County is seeking a MARC STP grant. Improvements in this area are needed and would greatly benefit all of Louisburg. Metcalf Road is a major corridor in Louisburg. Many businesses, schools and organizations are located on or directly off of Metcalf Road. The Louisburg Recreation Commission is located one block off of Metcalf. With sidewalks this will allow greater accessibility for patrons of all ages. With this project it will offer safe routes for everyone in the community. It will improve the entire communities quality of life, in regards to wellness and safety. This project encourages walking. The residents of Louisburg will be able to safely walk to school, walk to businesses and shops and walk to other homes. It would encourage walkers to use the sidewalks when heading to school facilities all year long and to the pool during the summer months. Once again the Louisburg Recreation Commission supports Miami County s efforts to secure the MARC grant and to see the Metcalf Road Complete Street Project completed. Broadway, Louisburg, KS To: Mid-America Regional Council From: City of Louisburg Date: March 9, 2018 Re: Metcalf Road Complete Street Project in Miami County/Louisburg The City of Louisburg is pleased to partner with Miami County to make improvements to South Metcalf Road in Louisburg. This major north-south corridor is the main thoroughfare that persons use to travel to Broadmoor Elementary School, commercial areas and to homes located in the southern part of the community. Improvements to this heavily used corridor will benefit not only citizens of Louisburg, but those that live outside of the city, visitors and commercial operations. Improvements to the road will greatly increase the safety of this street for vehicular traffic as well as pedestrians. With the proximity to the elementary school and the middle and high school just east of Metcalf as well as the public swimming pool, there are lots of pedestrians and cyclists that often dart in and out of the roadway. Adding curb and gutter as well as sidewalks should greatly improve safety. As a major commercial corridor inside the City of Louisburg any improvements to this roadway should add visibility and potentially spur infill development on empty or unused properties. Any of these types of changes would be a win-win situation for the City and the County. A complete street project on this corridor could use elements from the recent Complete Street Green Street improvements that were made to Broadway Street in downtown Louisburg in This would further emphasize the City and County s support of this growing sector of the county. Having safe transportation to and from school is part of the overall safety plan for our community. The City of Louisburg continues to invest in capital improvements that are helping us achieve our goal of keeping kids safe as they travel to and from school. Louisburg, along with Miami County, are now interested in seeking a Complete Streets Project through MARC that would help further protect our kids as they walk to our schools. Anything that is going to enhance and promote safety of our kids in our community I fully support. This grant will also help our goal as community to be an active community that promotes active lifestyles. The more sidewalks and walking paths that can be constructed that are safe, the more active adults and families we will have in our community. Active communities are vibrant and healthy. These communities seem to thrive over other inactive communities. Louisburg is a thriving community. We have a supportive community centered around the safety and well-being of all residents. By attaining this Complete Streets Project, our community would be able to continue to provide the kind of quality of life that the residents of Louisburg want and expect. 5 To: Mid-America Regional Council From: Date: March 9, 2018 Re: Metcalf Road Complete Street Project in Miami County/Louisburg The Louisburg Ministerial Alliance (a group of 7 churches) offers its enthusiastic support to the Metcalf Road Complete Street Project in Louisburg in which Miami County is seeking a MARC STP grant. Improvements to this much-used corridor inside the city limits of Louisburg will benefit the entire community in countless ways. Some of the ways in which this area will be benefitted is first, it will increase driver safety as children will be walking or biking along the sidewalk rather than the street and the improvements would encourage walkers to cross at intersections rather than darting across the middle of a block. Secondly, this is a major intersection with businesses that with the addition of sidewalks would encourage residents to walk from business to business and encourage a sense of community. Third, the addition of sidewalks would allow children to walk to the library, pool and schools during the school year and during the summer. Fourth, businesses visibility would be enhanced, and they would want to make improvements to their storefronts thereby adding to the appearance of the city. By adding sidewalks to a major commercial corridor, it expands the accessibility of the area and encourages persons to get out and walk or bike the community. As this is a major commercial district inside the city limits the project could integrate some of the small-town charm features that were included on the recent Broadway Complete Street make-over would further tie the historic downtown area to other areas of commerce inside the city. With this addition of improvements, the overall look of Louisburg will continue to attract more people to this community. This city is a warm, welcoming community that will continue to transform itself into a community that sets the example for other small communities to emulate. Metcalf Road is the major north/south corridor in Louisburg and the east side of Miami County. Any improvements to Metcalf Road such as with the Complete Street project would be a win-win for the city, the county and the entire area. The Louisburg Ministerial Alliance wholeheartedly supports the Metcalf Road Complete Street project and Miami County s efforts to secure a grant from MARC for this project.
