2 2 Welcome to the Suffolk Walking Festival YOU YOU RE RE IVIT TO PRTY!!! 2017 marks The Suffolk Walking Festivals 10th Birthday and we would love it if you joined us to help celebrate this wonderful event. Heath or speed dating where you could meet new friends or partner. We are sure that the programme has a walk that will take your fancy. We have over 100 walks on offer, providing the opportunity to explore the wonderful and diverse Suffolk countryside; stroll around medieval towns, ambles along the coast or wanders through our stunning countryside and enjoy the landscapes of our two reas of Outstanding atural Beauty. Families, we have a selection of walks for you around the half term period from golden mile walks between parks and museums in Lowestoft to activity routes in Ipswich and Sudbury and even a trail or two at Jimmy s Farm. We are sure that they will be a great day out for all the family. The Classic and Mega Challenge walks return, offering walkers the opportunity to explore the Stour Valley; a 63-mile route crossing the Suffolk countryside and dipping into Essex. Choose either to complete the route over a leisurely 4 days or if you really want to push yourself why not try it in 30 hours! ot forgetting our launch day with a variety of 10 different walks to try at Sutton Hoo, perhaps you would enjoy being one of the first to test their latest trail which will have its debut at the launch or perhaps the gruesome grave walk is more for you? With a variety of themed walks from uelling ragons in Sudbury, bird watching as you stroll around Westleton We look forward to seeing you as you celebrate with us, make new friends, have fun, and perhaps enjoy a slice of cake or two! 3 message from our patron. I m really looking forward to this year s Walking Festival and very proud to be part of it as it celebrates its 10th anniversary. Over the decade the festival has grown hugely and now there are walks across the whole county and for all sorts of people - there s bound to be something for you whether its history or nature you love or just the chance to have a sociable stroll. nd if you love a longer walk you re not forgotten either because there are also the Challenge and Mega challenge walks again this year! In these days, when we re being encouraged to be healthy, walking is one of the things that most of us can do without it costing a fortune or being too physically demanding. ll you need is some suitable footwear and a raincoat just in case! I love the way walking gets me up close and personal to the county I live in whether it s strolling through the town or plodding along the coast. This year there are over 100 walks programmed so far so have a look and book yourself in! Suffolk s Year of Walking started with the 2016 Suffolk Walking Festival and will end with the 2017 Suffolk Walking Festival. There are around 18 burial mounds for you to discover on your visit to Sutton Hoo. The ightjar makes Westleton its home for the summer. Join us for a walk around the heath and listen out for the extraordinary call of the ightjar. Bring your camera and a hot drink. 20 RSPB Minsmere ature Reserve, Westleton, IP17 3BY This is a unique walk starting from the iscovery Centre with a 30 minute session of mindfulness followed by a 1½ hour guided walk around RSPB Minsmere. We will then return to the centre for 30 minutes of gentle yoga and relaxation. We aim to enliven your senses and help attune body and mind into the magic of this wonderful coastal nature reserve. We then walk along the shoreline to the tip of the Peninsula at Shotley, pausing by the HMS Ganges Museum at the Marina for lunch. Lots of laughs were had and the odd slice of cake and bacon roll enjoyed. This year we are back with a new exciting challenge; the Stour Valley Path! This route follows the River Stour from the Essex, Suffolk border to ewmarket. Walkers can expect a stunning landscape as we pass through the edham Vale rea of Outstanding atural beauty, enjoying the views as we climb and descend through the valley. The real question is how will you conquer this challenge? Perhaps you really want to push yourself and take on this route in 30 hours or perhaps you would prefer to spread it out over four days. Whichever you choose we can t wait for you to join us as we walk through this outstanding landscape. Classic Challenge Walk Over 4 day period am Constable Country 8 hrs ½ miles am 103 Halls and a Castle 8 hrs Flatford (ational Trust), East Bergholt, Suffolk CO7 6UL We start this 4 day challenge at the epicentre of Constable County, as we set out on the Stour Valley Path. The route will descend into the valley of the River Box, thought to be one of the most attractive tributaries of the Stour. s we walk through Stoke-By-ayland take in the views of a 15th Century Church Tower and half-timbered houses. 101 FRI am 104 Walk Back in Time 8 hrs miles 18 16½ miles 18 Melford Hall, Long Melford, Sudbury, Suffolk CO10 9 Today we will prove that Suffolk is not completely flat! Enjoy the sight of colourful thatched cottages as we pass through Cavendish then the wonderful views as we head down into Clare. Towards the end of our journey we will pass Stour Mere, an oasis for wildlife am ncient Woodlands and Saxons 8 hrs Wormingford Village Hall, Main Rd, Wormingford, Colchester CO6 3Y s we continue along the Stour Valley Path leaving Constable County behind us, we will travel back in time passing orman Churches, WW 2 pill boxes and maybe a dragon! The route meanders through Sudbury Water Meadows before continuing along the old railway line to Long Melford, home to art and antiques. 58 miles in total per day Mega Challenge - Walk The Stour Valley Path in under 30 Hours 30 hrs 6 0 miles 18 Great Meadow, rms Lane, Kedington, Haverhill CB9 7QQ s we set out on the last day we will skirt several large ancient woodlands, which are one of the main features of this landscape. We will travel along the 6th century evil s yke, built to stop the Saxons, where views of Ely Cathedral are possible. We end the day with celebrations in ewmarket, the home of horse racing. ewmarket (Info pack will be sent) If you are fit enough and up for the challenge then the 63 miles, walk along the Stour Valley Path from ewmarket to Manningtree could be for you. This is a tough challenge including long stretches walking on unpredictable surfaces and in the dark. The rewards for your endeavours are likely to be supurb. The Stour Valley Path criss crosses the Essex and Suffolk border, much of which forms the edham Vale rea of Outstanding atural Beauty and the Stour Valley area.
