1 BIRMINGHAM-BLOOMFIELD SOCCER CLUB SOCCER NEWS Volume 8, Issue 2 November 2007 U12G Blazers, Victorious In Lansing O n the weekend of September the 21st, the U- 12 Blazer Girls participated in the Capital Area Classic Soccer Tournament that took place in Lansing, Michigan. This was the girls first tournament of the Fall Season; it was indeed a very successful one. With only one sub available for our only game on Saturday, the girls played a very smart game and came out with a 1-0 victory. On Sunday, now with a full squad, the Blazers won both their games and earned a spot to play in the finals. In the finals they met a very physical Livonia Meteors team that had only played one game that day. All their hard work prior to this tournament paid off in the end. With great team work, physical endurance, and skills, the girls kept possession of the ball and did not allow the Meteors to have any good scoring opportunities. In the second half, the team earned their one and only goal of the finals. The final whistle came, it was time to head back home, but this time, the girls had some extra luggage to carry with them their 1st place trophy. Inside this issue: Registration Form 6 Katie, Jennifer, Kate, Hanna, Murphy, Rheanna, Maggie, Natalie, Zoe, Maddy, Meredith, Rachael, C.J, and Coach Merlo Congratulations on a great weekend!! Don t forget to check our website, It is updated weekly with important information and upcoming BBSC dates. Spring Season Info 2 Team Names 3 President Letter 4 New Faces 5
2 P AGE 2 We need your help for spring... D uring the fall season, the BBSC has noticed the following problems within the rec program. Parents are turning up to practices late with their children and then walking through sessions that have already started. This causes disruptions to coaches and players who have to stop what they re doing. The coaches are there to help and teach your children to better their soccer skills. It is imperative that the players be there on time. Another thing we have noticed is that players are not wearing the proper soccer attire; jeans are not acceptable. Please, soccer attire only. This can be shorts or sweatpants. Many parents and players don t know their team name, age group, or coaches name. Please be aware of this information because if you need help finding your team at the field, we can help you best when you provide us with the basic information. Coaches, please remember to always be prepared with equipment and all coaches need to participate in training. Parents, parent coaches, and players please take all these points into consideration and help us to make our rec program an important and fun time for the kids who love the game of soccer. 1. BE ON TIME 2. WEAR ATHLETIC CLOTHING 3. KNOW YOUR TEAM NAME Spring Team Formation T he spring soccer teams are a continuation of the fall season. This means that all players from a fall team that register by the deadline (February 25) will be placed on the same team they were on in the fall. If the player wishes to move teams, this needs to be noted on the registration form. If there is a request to be placed on a specific team, this will be considered but all returning players to that team have first priority. If players do not register by the deadline, we can not guarantee that they will be placed on a spring team. SOCCER NEWS Uniforms... A ll players were to have the new uniforms for the fall 2007 season. The BBSC notified players and parents of the uniform change three seasons ago. We gave everyone a grace period, to allow time for everyone to get the new kit. The board of directors have made numerous spot checks this fall season and have spoken to coaches and parents when players were still not wearing the new uniform. For the spring season, no players will be allowed to play without the new uniform. The new uniforms are a completely different style, different logo, and have no names on the back. Uniforms can be purchased at the Bloomfield Sports Shop, Maple and Lahser Rd. in Bloomfield Hills.
3 V OLUME 8, ISSUE 2 P AGE 3 L.A. Galaxy is taking over Birmingham During the Spring, 2007 season, the BBSC decided to change their in house team names for the Fall, 2007 season. The reason for the change to be made was to introduce a relationship and attachment to the game, not only for our players, but also our parent coaches and parents at the entry level of the sport. As most people know, for kids to aspire and develop in a sport, they need to have role models from the highest level of that particular sport. This creates the old analogy of Monkey see, monkey do:. The kids copy the stars and begin to not only emulate the star s of the game, but gain the desire for the sport, to perhaps be the next one. As I am sure you are all aware during this fall, our teams had names such as Houston Dynamo (MLS), Chicago Fire (MLS), and of course L.A. Galaxy with the biggest icon of the present game; David Beckham. We Matched U.S.A. team names with some of the biggest in the world; Real Madrid, A.C. Milan, and Manchester United. According to Forbes Money, Manchester United is the most valuable sports franchise or team in the world. Coach Ed Says. Hi Kids! Please take advantage of the great soccer coverage now available on cable television!! You can watch the best players and teams in the world play amazing soccer! If you want to become a better player, then watch all the top players, playing at the coolest stadiums! BBSC hoped that this would create the change we were looking for. We received such a positive response to this change from most of our members, we feel it will really have the impact we wanted. It also helps the players, parent coaches and parents find the teams, clubs that match the player s they here about through the media. This change had such an impact for some. When Alexi Lalas, a former BBSC member, found out about the change; he and the L.A. Galaxy, for which he is General Manager, kindly and very generously donated an entire U7B team with Galaxy Beckham uniforms to promote and enhance the change. We would like to thank Alexi, the Galaxy, and of course; all of our members for accepting this change with such a positive frame of mind. Best in Soccer, James Tyers Director of Coaching Marcia Kaline Executive Director BBSC Executive Board Remember, we learn from our favorite players and heroes!! Check out ESPN.com for all the latest scores and updates so you can keep up with your favorite teams. Best in Soccer, Coach Ed Leighton
4 P AGE 4 SOCCER NEWS A Letter from the President... Hello soccer fans, Last spring the Executive Board of the BBSC created an Executive Director position for the club. The goal was to provide a face for the parents and the community to identify with, and to facilitate the day to day operations of the club. I am pleased to announce that Marcia Kaline, formerly BBSC President, accepted the job. The new position required that Marcia step down as BBSC President. The president s spot was filled temporarily by the vice president, until the June AGM meeting, when I was officially elected President of the BBSC. Since taking over as Executive Director; Marcia has reorganized the office policies and practices, registered over 1500 recreational players, fielded calls from parents and coaches, distributed equipment, and attended field meetings with both the city and the school district to secure playing fields for the fall season. Marcia is also in charge of distributing equipment, coordinating with the referee assignor, and obtaining field permits for our coaches. Thanks to Marcia s efforts, you ve had phone calls returned promptly, questions answered and problems solved. Perhaps you have visited our updated website? Curt Anderson and his company, Municipal Web Services, have worked to update our pages and provide up to the minute information about our club, for our club. Check it out if you haven t already. This fall we implemented our new rec. team names. Proposed last year by Jamie Tyers, Director of Coaching, the Executive Board approved the switch and this fall you saw teams Newcastle, D.C. United, and L.A. Galaxy among others out on the field. Think soccer, Kelley Andersen BBSC President Don t forget to check our website, It is updated weekly with important information and upcoming BBSC dates.
