1 COACHING CURRICULUM GUIDANCE SEASON

2 SECTION: Club Philosophy The philosophy consists of the application of total football mixed with traditional English characteristics of hard work and pressing. The total football approach requires the players to move in a fluid formation, where players can interchange positions quickly. Central within the centre is the style of play, training, behaviour and rules. Birmingham strives to keep the way of playing football recognisable; attractive, offensive minded, creative, fast, fair and preferably in the opponents half. Size is not important, most important is that the player has talent, that they can play with the ball, not that they are the strongest or tallest. We train the youngsters to be good people with a healthy lifestyle and help them to be happy with their way of life. It's very important for us that the girls have respect for others. Our Match Philosophy 1. We must be the most committed team with a greater desire to achieve and with a harder work ethic than the opposition. 2. We must try to win by playing very well, more creatively than the opposition, with attacking football. 3. We want to win on the scoreboard. But we don't want to win without the first two aims being fulfilled.

3 SECTION: Introduction We want to keep a free and open syllabus for coaches to work at independently. However we do feel that certain areas need to be included to prepare the player s move upwards to their next age group, to meet those increased demands. This also allows coaches to move forward in a players/teams development more productively as they progress through the centre. One focus that should be generic throughout the development system and training our young players, is that the final outcome. Whether it be a successful technical outcome (e.g. shot on target), a tactical outcome (e.g. winning the ball high and early) or the final results of a match (e.g. displaying game understanding) Players are to be assessed at whether the following criteria is demonstrated within matches as this is the ultimate test of understanding and technical demonstration. Every area of the programme should always reflect the game and the application of the knowledge and skill base. This will aid decisions of staff when the time comes to review the players progress.

5 SECTION: Coaching Curriculum How have we adapted over the years at BCLFC Regional Talent Club? Themes have replaced the active scheme of work which will be used as a reference only The new themes will be based around attacking and defending areas of the emerging game Coaches will be free to express themselves within a session Coaching strategies have changed in preparation for new player learning models GK specific programme, themes and details The Technical Director drives the overall player development programme including the coaching curriculum. However, all staff at the centre of excellence (multi disciplinary) are encourage to input, comment and feedback in this open and constantly evolving process.

13 SECTION: Rationale Each age group (U10 s U16 s) will follow a set theme for a recorded period of time (6-week block). Each age group will have different needs throughout the duration of the theme period. The coaching team will have licence to adapt the content of the theme (even defer to a later date if required) based on the evolving needs of their players. All themes are guides and the coaching curriculum includes all of the details a coaching team must include within the delivery. Although the technical director will have input into the content and delivery through staff development etc. The coaches have licence to deliver based on their understanding, particular personality, space available, time allotted, players available etc.

14 SECTION: Defending Themes Being aware of opportunities to defend while in possession of the ball Being secure from the loss of possession. e.g. Being aware of the counter attack solid shape in a 3+Gk Defending as a Unit; Shapes, pressing, recovery lines, communication, delay by staying together, eliminate best, encourage mistake, exclude individuals, engage when threatened. Defending as an Individual; in 1v1 situations Defend to delay; allowing recovery and defending against speed, deny space in behind, try to get players head down, straight line recovery runners but effect the ball if you can Defend to win; times of the game, momentum of the match, areas of the field, when and who to commit, triggers, pressure first touch, effective but no fouling pressure, sqeeze as a unit, encourage mistakes, first and second ball and phases Defend to move players; force opposition to play predictably and in a direction that benefits our team, compactness, depth, awareness of position on the field, body positions Defending while in Shape; more tactical defensive strategies formulated, e.g. allowing defensive players to receive possession of the ball from their goal kicks and then press Defending Out of Shape; the perfection of defensive technical qualities Transition; employing the best decision making process, when ball is changing possession

15 SECTION: Pre-Season Focus on defending themes - 4/8/15-26/8/15 Pre-season skills that include defensive strategies to dominate 1v1 situations using defensive techniques included within the curriculum Defending as an Individual in 1v1 situations Defend to delay allowing recovery and defending against speed, deny space in behind, try to get players head down, straight line recovery runners but effect the ball if you can Defend to win times of the game, momentum of the match, areas of the field, when and who to commit, triggers, pressure first touch, effective but no fouling pressure, squeeze as a unit, encourage mistakes, first and second ball and phases Focus areas Fitness outcomes with defensive movements and mindsets.
