LAST TIME OUT: DENVER 1-0 EASTERN ILLINOIS [-/30] DENVER ADVANCES TO SUMMIT LEAGUE FINAL WITH 1-0 WIN OVER EASTERN ILLINOIS Blake Elder s Winner Improves Denver To 9-0 All-Time In The Summit League Tournament OMAHA Redshirt-senior Blake Elder s (Fort Worth, Texas) first-half goal and the top-seeded [-/30] University of Denver men s soccer team s eighth cleansheet of the season booked the Pioneers ticket to Saturday s Summit League Final after a 1-0 win over Eastern Illinois on Thursday afternoon at Caniglia Field. Being the five-time regular season champs, going in those five years and now 9-0 in the league tournament, the guys in my locker room have a lot of experience in these types of matches, head coach Jamie Franks said. Being able to take that experience with them is critical at this time of year. These tournament games are always decided by small margins. We ve had a lot of adversity during the regular season and have been on the wrong side of luck. I ve been impressed with the leadership of this group, especially the last several weeks, and I think this group is peaking at the right time. Elder got back on the scoresheet for the first time since opening night in the 39th minute. After senior outside back AJ Fuller (Littleton, Colo.) was fouled just inside Denver s defensive half, Summit League Freshman of the Year Jacob Stensson (Stockholm, Sweden) played a quick restart, clipping his free kick in behind the Eastern Illinois back line. Elder ran onto the ball, took a touch to his left, and hit it hard and low past goalkeeper Mike Novotny. The goal was Elder s second of the campaign and the ninth of his two-year Pioneer career. Thursday s assist for Stensson was the fourth of his rookie season. Denver outshot Eastern Illinois 8-3 in the opening 45 minutes and took all three corner kicks in the first half. Eastern is a very good team and is super well coached, Franks said. We had trouble with them in Denver in the regular season. Our opponents in the conference always play us tough, and results like this don t come easy. We know in Championship games like the one we are going to play in on Saturday, we need our big players to step up. Denver allowed just two shots on goal on Thursday afternoon, bringing Denver s defensive mark to 11 in six matches against league opposition this season. Denver has allowed two shots on goal or less in eight matches this season. BREAKING DOWN DENVER S 2017 SCHEDULE Denver will host eight regular season matches in 2017, including hosting six of its first eight non-league matches at the University of Denver Soccer Stadium. To be able to play some of these big opponents at home to start the season is great for us. DU Soccer Stadium is a wonderful venue for a college soccer game. Overall, from top to bottom, this schedule will present different adversities and challenges that will force us to learn and mature. 18 2017 BOX SCORES DENVER The striking partnership of junior Andre Shinyashiki (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and redshirt-senior Blake Elder (Fort Worth, Texas) combined for three goals to lead the [3/4] University of Denver men s soccer team past [23/15] Florida Gulf Coast on Friday night at the University of Denver Soccer Stadium. Shinyashiki s brace is his second in a season opener in his three years with the Pioneers, also finding the back of the net twice on opening night in 2015 against UC Riverside. Friday night s win extends Denver s regular season unbeaten run to 36 matches, dating back to Halloween night, Denver also improved to at home in its last 44 competitive matches. Shinyashiki gave Denver its opening goal just shy of the nine minute mark. Redshirt-senior Kyle Morlack (Goodyear, Ariz.) chipped it in behind the Eagles backline for Shinyashiki, who smashed a one-time volley into the twine to give Denver the early breakthrough. DU scored just twice in the opening quarter hour a year ago. Just shy of 10 minutes later, FGCU s Nicolas Samayoa found the equalizer off a corner kick near-post service from Dennis Zapata. Samayoa s glancing header tucked into the far-post side netting to level the match for the visitors. DENVER - On his Pioneer debut, redshirt-junior Jacob Hanlin (Denver, Colo.) drew a penalty kick in the 45th minute that senior co-captain Graham Smith (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) converted to send the [3/4] University of Denver men s soccer team past [16/20] Akron 1-0 on Monday night at the University of Denver Soccer Stadium. With the victory, Denver extended its regular season unbeaten run, dating back to Halloween, 2014, to 37 matches. Both Denver captains were involved in the lone tally of the match. Senior co-captain Alex Underwood (Winnetka, Ill.) played a ball over the top of the Akron backline from the midfield stripe to the run of Hanlin. A Portland transfer, and brother of former Pioneer Karsten Hanlin, Jacob Hanlin got a touch past the keeper and was tripped up by Ben Lundt just inside the box forcing referee Nikola Aleksic to point to the spot. Smith fired the spot kick past Lundt with 21 seconds left in the first half. Akron had the majority of the possession in the final 45 minutes, but Denver s defense limited the Zips quality chances. Despite the possession, Akron had just a 6-2 edge in shots in the final 45 minutes, and only Manuel Cordeiro forced Nick Gardner (Marvin, N.C.) into an impressive save in the 59th minute. The first half featured just four combined shots and four corners. Redshirt-junior Nick Gardner (Marvin, N.C.) was only called upon to make two saves on Friday, both of which came in the 53rd minute. Samayoa was looking for his second on a long-range free kick that was hit with pace and deflected by a Denver defender. Gardner stayed patient and reacted well to get a hand on the deflection, and got up quickly to save the follow-up attempt from Shak Adams to keep things at 1-1. Freshman outside back Jacob Stensson (Stockholm, Sweden) and redshirt freshman Dylan Keeney (Littleton, Colo.) both made their Pioneer debuts off the bench for third-year head coach Jamie Franks. Denver got a restart goal of its own in the 73rd minute to take the lead back at 2-1. Senior co-captain Alex Underwood (Winnetka, Ill.) played the ball into the penalty area from the right channel, 10 yards into his attacking half. Redshirt-sophomore centerback Dan Mooney (Indianapolis, Ind.) flicked an Eagles failed clear to the feet of Elder who riffled a shot past FGCU s Jared Brown to put the Pioneers back on top. Shinyashiki ran onto a miss-touched pass in the 78th minute and scored from outside the 18 on his first touch to give Denver a two-goal cushion. 18 DENVER MEN S SOCCER

2017 BOX SCORES DENVER For the first time in the regular season since Halloween Night, 2014, the [4/4] University of Denver men s soccer team came out on the wrong end of the scoreboard, dropping Friday night s match to [-/RV] Furman 1-0 at the University of Denver Soccer Stadium. The setback snaps a streak of 37-straight regular season matches unbeaten for the Pioneers and is third-year head coach Jamie Franks first regular season loss as the Pioneers bench boss ( overall). After a fairly balanced first half in created chances that saw redshirt-junior Nick Gardner (Marvin, N.C.) come up with two big saves, and junior striker Andre Shinyashiki (Sao Paulo, Brazil) force Furman goalkeeper Ben Hale into two saves as well, Denver controlled proceedings in the second 45 minutes. The Pioneers had a 5-1 edge in shots in the second half and took three of the second half s four corner kicks. Hale came up with another two saves to force the match into extra time. With under 90 seconds to play in the second period of extra time, Furman got to the second ball off a Denver free kick deep in its defensive half. Furman s Rocky Guerra found the run of Danny Kierath at the top of the box. Kierath took a couple of touches to his left and tucked a tidy finish inside the far post to send the visitors back to their hotel with a 1-0 victory. In addition to the regular season unbeaten streak, Friday night s loss also snaps a 15-match home winning streak for the Pioneers. DENVER Redshirt-sophomore Ryan Barlow (Coppell, Texas) scored in the second minute and senior co-captain Graham Smith (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) scored in the 64th to take the University of Denver men s soccer team past 10-man Drake 2-0 on Sunday night at the University of Denver Soccer Stadium. Senior co-captain Alex Underwood (Winnetka, Ill.) assisted on both goals to reach the 30-point mark in his career. Barlow s breakthrough came in the second minute on a long throw-in. Underwood s throw came 10 yards off the endline to the near post, and Barlow flicked it on inside the far post past Drake goalkeeper Caden McCullough for his first goal on his 18th CAP. In the 45th minute, the visitors went down to 10 men after a late challenge from Aleksi Tuominen. Freshman holding mid Destan Norman (Fort Collins, Colo.) tackled Tuominen in the left channel, won the ball, and when he got up to chase the ball down, he was taken down from behind by Tuominen. Referee Chris Greer wasted no time giving Tuominen his marching orders, and the Pioneers went into the locker room up a goal and up a man. Drake had the first clear-cut chance of the second half, when redshirt-junior Nick Gardner (Marvin, N.C.) dove to his left to stop a free header from Jake Taylor. The parried shot fell to the feet of the Bulldogs Touko Laakkonen, who rattled the post, and the ball bounced back to Gardner to keep proceedings at 1-0. Denver found its second goal in the 64th when Smith converted his second of the season and the fifth goal of his career, finishing into an empty net after Underwood s free kick from the right forced McCullough into his second save of the night. The Pioneers outshot Drake 12-3 Sunday and took three of the five corners in the match. DENVERPIONEERS.COM 19

2017 BOX SCORES ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. The University of Denver men s soccer team fell to UC Irvine 1-0 in a neutral site match on Friday night at the UNM Soccer Complex. ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. The [9/8] University of Denver men s soccer team dropped a 2-0 result to CSUN on Sunday afternoon at the UNM Soccer Complex. We re obviously disappointed with the result. We waited for the last 20 We re a bit unfortunate to have 19 shots, 21 crosses and seven corners and minutes to play our brand, and really put the pressure on them, head coach not get a win, head coach Jamie Franks said. We didn t give up too much Jamie Franks said. We were unlucky not to get the equalizer. Guys like Andre defensively, but at the end of the day, we need guys to make plays. Soccer is Shinyashiki, Blake Elder and Alex Underwood are good goal scorers, but they a funny sport, it doesn t always go your way when you create those chances, are just a bit unlucky not to find the back of the net at the moment. and that s what this group is going through right now. I believe in this team and its leaders, and those guys will find their form. Right now we re just a bit unlucky in the attacking third, but those are the stretches you go through in this game sometimes. True character is determined by how you react in times of adversity and inconvenience, and the good news is, we get to see how the guys react when we get back out there Sunday afternoon. The two teams played to a scoreless opening 45 minutes in Albuquerque, with the Anteaters (3-1-1) outshooting the Pioneers (3-2-0) 4-2, and both teams taking a pair of corners. We ll look to remain resilient, especially during times of adversity like this. The group will be stronger on the other side when we come out of it. I think Alex Underwood and Graham Smith are finding out a lot about themselves as they continue to develop as leaders, especially in these times, and they ll grow from that. Like I said on Friday night, I trust in my leaders, and we ll come out of this and be better from it. The two teams went into the locker room scoreless, with Denver outshooting CSUN 8-5, and forcing opposing goalkeeper Henrik Regitnig into the only four saves of the opening 45 minutes. UC Irvine got on the board in the 57th minute thanks to Ivan Canales third goal of the season. Daniel Crisostomo got the ball to Canales on the right wing, who bounced his strike off the far post and into the back of the net. Junior Andre Shinyashiki (Sao Paulo, Brazil) looked for the Denver equalizer in short order, but the striker s shot was kept out by UCI s Alex Waldron, the keeper s first save of the match in the 64th minute. Classmate Kenny Akamatsu (Niigata, Japan) looked to have the keeper beat in the 74th minute, but his shot was cleared off the line by an Anteater defender to keep Irvine in-front with a quarter hour to go. Shinyashiki created two more chances in the final five minutes, having his first try blocked, and the second one saved by Waldron. From its pressure following the Irvine breakthrough, Denver outshot UCI 11-10, and took seven of the match s 10 corners. Friday night s loss breaks a stretch of 47 matches unbeaten in regulation for the Pioneers, a stretch that dated back to the 2014 NCAA First Round match against Oregon State. Emmanuel Usen Jr. s second and third goals of the season came in the second half, seconds less than 13 minutes apart. The Matadors opener came off an assist from Daniel Trejo. Usen Jr received a pass from Trejo and smashed it into the roof of the net from 11 yards out. The CSUN goal scorer doubled the Matadors advantage in the 74th, finishing from in-tight on the right wing. Denver took 19 of the 29 shots in the match and seven of the 10 corner kicks on Sunday afternoon. I m excited to see how we come out of this weekend and respond in training and our matches in the next days, Franks said. At times this weekend we saw the Proactive Fighting Football brand of soccer that we re looking for. We need to bring that 90 minutes every time out. 20 DENVER MEN S SOCCER

2017 BOX SCORES DENVER - After missing the 2015 and 2016 seasons with two separate knee injuries, 2014 University of Denver men s soccer leading goal scorer Eric Kronenberg (Boulder, Colo.) got on the scoresheet for the first time in 1,034 days to kick-start a 3-0 [RV/RV] Pioneers win over UC Davis on Friday night at the University of Denver Soccer Stadium. When the ball went into the back of the net, it was one of those blackout moments, Kronenberg said. It was pure joy. Going to the bench after the goal and seeing the entire team as excited as I was is a moment that I will remember forever. After two years of grinding through injuries, that moment is going to stay with me. I gave (athletic trainer) Michael Eckert and (Pioneer Performance coach) Matt Shaw a big hug after. They put up with me over the last two years. I didn t go home during the winters. They didn t get a vacation, they were in there with me. They put in just as much work as I did, and this goal is just as much there s as it is mine. I thank them so much for getting me back. Senior co-captain Alex Underwood (Winnetka, Ill.) and junior striker Andre Shinyashiki (Sao Paulo, Brazil) added second half tallies, while senior co-captain Graham Smith (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) assisted on all three goals. I think we found out who our leaders were, Franks said. After the adversity we ve dealt with the last couple of weeks, and luck really not being in our favor, guys rolled up their sleeves, led by example and brought the passion and inspiration that makes the Denver Pioneers different. DENVER - The University of Denver men s soccer team fell to Saint Mary s 1-0 on Sunday night at the University of Denver Soccer Stadium. I m really disappointed with our performance today, head coach Jamie Franks said. That s our fourth loss to a team that hasn t even taken more than seven shots on us. That was their first shot on goal, and it was a great goal, but at the end of the day we didn t want to win the game. When you play with fear, and your leaders play with fear, and they re not willing to put themselves out there and lead the group, you get results like that. We were on top of the game, dominating the game out there in the first half, and we came out in the second half with no fight and found a way to lose. I know this team can be special. I ve seen it from them. We have talent and experience but we need to figure out why we fight for eachother, because any success we have had in the past has come from a collectiveness and togetherness. We will figure it out, I trust the leaders of this team. Anders Engebretsen got on the scoresheet in the 84th minute, curling a ball around redshirt-junior goalkeeper Nick Gardner (Marvin, N.C.) and into the side netting for the game s lone tally. A little more than three minutes after coming on as a sub, Kronenberg broke the deadlock with his first goal since the 2014 Summit League Final, blasting a strike from Denver outshot the visitors 9-6, including 7-2 in the opening 45 minutes. The the top of the box. Smith played a switch ball to senior outside back AJ Fuller (Littleton, team s split the six corner kicks in the match three apiece. Saint Mary s goalkeeper Remi Prieur was called on to make four saves, all in the first half. Colo.) down the left channel. Fuller cut his cross back to the top of the box to Kronenberg for the Pioneers breakthrough in the 36th minute. Kronenberg now has 11 goals in his Pioneer career, all as a substitute. The redshirt-senior moved into sixth in game-winning goals in Denver s Division I history with the fifth of his career. I love him (Kronenberg), I recruited him and I believe in him, Franks said. To watch his resiliency and his growth in the last three years, it s a special moment for me as a coach. To watch how hard he worked, and how much support and love he got from Matt Shaw and Michael Eckert and everyone else. It s a special moment. Underwood doubled the Pioneers advantage in the 48th minute with the ninth goal of his Denver career. Smith found Shinyashiki s run in the middle of the park, and the Denver junior played a clever through-ball to Underwood, who took a couple of the touches before curling his finish into the side netting. UC Davis goalkeeper Jon Laughlin was whistled for handling outside of the area in the 83rd minute to set-up a training ground set-piece that saw Smith touch it to Shinyashiki, who put it into the back of the net from just outside the area. The goal is the 17th of the Brazilian s career, moving him into a tie for fourth in Denver s Division I history. Shinyashiki is also eighth in career points as a Pioneer with 42. 22 2017 BOX SCORES ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Redshirt-sophomore Ryan Barlow (Coppell, Texas) completed a firsthalf brace inside 23 minutes and senior co-captain Alex Underwood (Winnetka, Ill.) bent an 83rd minute free kick into the side netting to send the [-/RV] University of Denver men s soccer team to a 3-1 road win over Saint Louis on Tuesday night at Hermann Stadium. I m proud of my leaders tonight, head coach Jamie Franks said. There was bravery and a collectiveness that we ve been unable to sustain throughout the year. There have been great moments this season, but we ve been unable to really put a match together like we did tonight. To respond after the pk and defend well in the second half was great to see from my guys. To defend like we did and get a third goal to seal the match was an important moment for this leadership group. Alex Underwood and Graham Smith played their roles and kept the group together tonight. We showed that fighting football mentality, and when we do that for 90 minutes, we re a tough team to beat. Junior striker Andre Shinyashiki (Sao Paulo, Brazil) played a role in all three goals for the Pioneers, earning assists through initial shots on the two Barlow goals, and creating the free kick that led to Underwood s 20-yard set-piece goal. Barlow opened the scoring in the 20th minute, putting his rebound into the left side of the net after Shinyashiki s second shot of the night was saved by Sascha Otte. The redshirt-sophomore doubled the Pioneers advantage in the 23rd minute. Shinyashiki s shot started the scoring chance once again, rattling his strike off the woodwork this time, but Barlow was there to finish his third goal of both the 2017 season and his career, including his second game-winner. Lennart Hein pulled the home side back to within one, converting from the spot for his third goal of the season in the 26th minute. Following three goals in the first 26 minutes, Denver took a 2-1 lead into the intermission having outshot SLU 8-6. The Bills took three of the match s four corner kicks in the opening 45 minutes. Saint Louis pushed for the second-half equalizer, outshooting the Pioneers 8-1 in the second 45 minutes, but Underwood converted Denver s lone chance late in the second half for his second goal of the campaign and the 10th goal of his career. Redshirt-junior goalkeeper Nick Gardner (Marvin, N.C.) made a season-high four saves in the win. With the victory, Denver improved to on the 2017 campaign, while Saint Louis fell to The Billikens entered Tuesday off a win over defending National Champion Stanford and a draw with Akron. The Pioneers grabbed their first three points away from home in three tries in Denver earned 24 points away from home in 2016 (11 matches) and 20 in 2015 (eight matches). SPOKANE, Wash. The [-/RV] University of Denver men s soccer team fell to Gonzaga 2-1 in extra time on Saturday night at Luger Field. It was not a great game from us tonight, head coach Jamie Franks said. None of our guys performed to their ability. We missed three or four golden opportunities, had a weak penalty called against us and we just didn t bring our Fighting Football mentality to the field tonight. If we don t have guys out there to overcome the times of adversity, then results like this are going to happen. The point of our out of conference schedule is to prepare us for league play, and I think we ve done that in our first 10 matches. We are the four-time regular season and league tournament champions, and we look forward to stepping out on the field Saturday to begin to defend those titles. Junior Kenny Akamatsu (Niigata, Japan) netted the breakthrough in the 42nd minute, heading in a rebound off a Ryan Barlow (Coppell, Texas) shot into the empty net to give the Pioneers (5-5-0) the lead at the intermission. Gonzaga (6-3-1) got the equalizer off a penalty and won the match in the 91st minute off a Christo Michaelson goal from just outside the six-yard box. Redshirt-senior Eric Kronenberg (Boulder, Colo.) played a cross to Barlow at the back post to start the Pioneers first-half scoring opportunity. Barlow s header off the pass rattled the crossbar and bounced once to the head level of Akamatsu who knocked in his first of the 2017 campaign and the third goal of his career. With the assist, Barlow earned his fifth point of the week, after scoring twice in Denver s 3-1 win at Saint Louis on Tuesday. Kronenberg s assist was the second of his career. Each team took five shots in the opening 45 minutes, and the Pioneers took five of the seven corner kicks in the first half. Gonzaga got the equalizer in the 52nd minute thru a Ben White penalty after freshman outside back Jacob Stensson (Stockholm, Sweden) was caught with his hands on the back of a Gonzaga attacker while the two were going up for a header in the area. Junior striker Andre Shinyashiki (Sao Paulo, Brazil) nearly put Denver back in-front a minute later, but after touching the ball by the Gonzaga keeper, Shinyashiki had his shot cleared off the line by Austin Giftopoulos. The home side went down to 10-men in the 83d minute when Jalen Crisler was shown his second caution in a 15 minute span, pulling Kronenberg down from behind inside the Pioneers attacking half. 22 DENVER MEN S SOCCER

2017 BOX SCORES DENVER - Redshirt-senior Eric Kronenberg (Boulder, Colo.) scored his second goal in Denver s last three home games after recovering from back-to-back knee injuries to lead the University of Denver men s soccer team past Eastern Illinois on Saturday night at the University of Denver Soccer Stadium. I think when the guys are locked in, they play their role, they are resilient and they stay together, they are a really difficult team to beat, head coach Jamie Franks said. At the end of the day, we should have finished the game off earlier. Credit Eric (Kronenberg) for a great run and we got some good build up play from Andre (Shinyashiki) and Ken (Akamatsu). Eric makes us different off the bench. He s a big time player that can deliver those big time moments for us. Denver turned in one of its more complete performances Saturday night, outshooting the visitors 14-3, and creating the only three corners of Saturday night s match. Kronenberg scored the 12th goal of his career in the 52nd minute, beating the keeper 1v1 after a through ball from junior striker Andre Shinyashiki (Sao Paulo, Brazil). Shinyashiki and junior winger Kenny Akamatsu (Niigata, Japan) linked up, starting from Denver s left flank. Akamatsu played a ball in the middle of the park to Shinyashiki 40 yards away from the Pioneers goal. Shinyashiki slipped in Kronenberg in-between the Eastern Illinois center and outside back, before the Boulder native un-corked his shot from 16 yards to put the Pioneers ahead. I was talking to Andre before the second half, and we noticed the space in the back to play a ball in from the 9, Kronenberg said. I told him I was going to make that run off him when we were in together. He played a great ball in, and then I just had to take a touch, and put it in the near post. The redshirt-senior is now two goals outside of Denver s career record book top-10, and moved into a tie with Shinyashiki for fifth in career game winning goals with six. With the assist, Shinyashiki moved into sole possession of sixth in career points with 45 (17G-11A). Denver s defense held Eastern Illinois to just one clear chance to equalize, conceding a long throw in the 88th minute, but Christian Sosnowski s half-volley rose just over the crossbar. TULSA, Okla. Junior striker Andre Shinyashiki (Sao Paulo, Brazil) equalized at 1-1 in the 56th minute, but the Pioneers fell to Tulsa 2-1 on Tuesday night at Hurricane Stadium. Once again, we re on the wrong side of a result on the road, but tonight is the first night this season where I really saw my team, head coach Jamie Franks said. Our brand is Proactive Fighting Football, and we showed that tonight. We ve had trouble this season finding that level of intensity, and playing inspired soccer, but we really saw our guys fight out there today. Obviously we never want to lose a match, but we came out to Tulsa to get better, and as a staff, we re happy with the guys performance tonight. The results will come. Now we look to get back into Summit League play and build on this performance Saturday at Fort Wayne. Tulsa took the lead on a corner kick just shy of the half hour mark when Joe Ruiz headed a service from Miguel Velasquez into the back of the net from eight yards out. The goal was Ruiz s first of the 2017 campaign. Shinyashiki s leveler came in the 56th minute off an assist from redshirt-senior Eric Kronenberg (Boulder, Colo.). After the two linked up in reverse order in Denver s 1-0 win over Eastern Illinois on Saturday night, Kronenberg played a cross into Shinyashiki this time, and the Denver junior finished his fourth goal of the season into the lower left corner from just inside the six-yard box. The Sao Paulo native s goal is the 18th of his career, moving Shinyashiki into sole possession of fourth in Denver s DI Record Book in goals, and sixth in Denver s DI Record Book in points with 46. The assist for Kronenberg was the third of his career. Tulsa grabbed the lead back in the 71st minute off Velasquez s second goal of the campaign. After setting up the Hurricanes opener from the corner flag in the first half, Velasquez netted a free kick from 22 yards out to give the home side a 2-1 advantage. DENVERPIONEERS.COM 23

2017 BOX SCORES FORT WAYNE, Ind. Following a 1-1 halftime score, junior striker Andre Shinyashiki (Sao Paulo, Brazil) scored twice in the second half to send the University of Denver men s soccer program past Fort Wayne 3-1 on Saturday night at the Hefner Soccer Complex. From top to bottom, that was our best performance of the year, head coach Jamie Franks said. They scored on one of their first chances of the game, which is never a good sign, but the resiliency that my guys showed is what makes them a dangerous group to play against. They never got down on themselves. We made a few adjustments at halftime, and I thought that we executed really well in the second half. Redshirt-senior Kyle Morlack (Goodyear, Ariz.) scored his first goal since his true freshman season in 2013 to give the Pioneers a first half lead in the 19th minute. Morlack s last goal came against IUPUI, four years and two days ago. Saturday night s goal was the fourth of his career and was assisted by senior co-captain Graham Smith (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) and corner kick taker Jacob Stensson (Stockholm, Sweden). Kyle is an extension of the coaching staff, and a real leader on this team, Franks said. His hard work and grit makes him a leader by example in any organization. We re happy that Kyle was able to get back on the scoresheet tonight. Fort Wayne equalized before the intermission when Oscar Uyamadu finished his fourth of the season from inside the 18 to pull the home side level in the 38th minute. Denver outshot Fort Wayne 6-4 in the first half, and took three of the four corners in the opening 45 minutes. Uyamadu s strike was the only shot on goal for Fort Wayne on Saturday night. Denver turned up the attacking threat in the second half, taking eight of the nine shots in the frame, putting six of them on target. Shinyashiki converted from the penalty spot in the 72nd minute to give Denver the 2-1 advantage, and followed that up with a header off a Stensson free kick in the 78th minute for his third goal of the week. Shinyashiki remains in sixth in DU s Division I history in points with 51, while moving up to third in career goals with 20 and third in game-winning goals with seven in his 2+-year career. TULSA, Okla. Junior Andre Shinyashiki (Sao Paulo, Brazil) scored his fourth and fifth goals in the last three matches to send the University of Denver men s soccer team past Oral Roberts 2-0 on Saturday night at Case Soccer Complex. Overall, I m really proud of my group, head coach Jamie Franks said. They continue to get better and grow with confidence, experience and maturity. We have guys continuing to find their form, and they are resilient as a group and stick together. When they do that, we re a tough team to beat. We would have liked to put the game away earlier with all the chances that we were able to create, but that s a testament to the leadership of this team that they stuck to the task, and we were able to both get a second goal and keep a cleansheet. Our older guys are really starting to come together, and are leading by example with the foundation of the experience of playing in important late season matches on the road. I m looking forward to getting back on the field with this group on Wednesday. Shinyashiki opened the scoring in the 33rd minute with his team-high seventh goal of the campaign and the 21st of his career. Junior Kenny Akamatsu (Niigata, Japan) settled a bouncing ball in the box, and played it to his right. Shinyashiki took a touch by his defender and drove it hard and low into the back of the net. The game-winner was the eighth of his career, tying him with Collin Audley for second in Denver s Division I history. The Denver (8-6-0, Summit) junior doubled the lead in the 86th minute, scoring his fifth goal in the last three matches, all on the road. Redshirt-freshman Dylan Keeney (Littleton, Colo.) played the final ball to his right to Shinyashiki on a 3-on-2 counter attack for the Pioneers. Shinyashiki smashed his eight of the campaign past Oral Roberts (4-8-1, 1-2-0) goalkeeper Thibaut Giquel to close out the scoring. The assist for Keeney was his first collegiate point. Denver outshot the home side 18-9 and had a 7-5 edge in corners. Redshirt-senior goalkeeper Nick Gardner (Marvin, N.C.) was called upon to make just one save in Denver s fifth cleansheet of the campaign. 24 DENVER MEN S SOCCER

2017 BOX SCORES ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. A pair of old Mountain Pacific Sports Federation rivals, Denver and [RV/RV] New Mexico, drew 0-0 on Wednesday night at the UNM Soccer Complex. In the series history, 20 of the 27 Division I matches have been decided by a goal or less. Denver s road point is the program s third result in 13 Division I matches when taking on New Mexico in Albuquerque (1-10-2). With Saturday s Summit League clash between the two Summit League co-champions from a year ago on the horizon, head coach Jamie Franks rotated players through the lineup with 18 players earning a CAP on Wednesday night. Redshirt-freshman goalkeeper Will Palmquist (Denver, Colo.) made his collegiate debut in the mid-week clash, making six saves. There were a lot of adverse moments that presented themselves tonight, and I thought my guys handled them very well, Franks said. To be able to go on the road and get a result is a positive step forward for this team. We understand our way into the NCAAs is to win the Summit League Tournament in a few weeks. We were able to get some guys some rest tonight, and I thought the young players that got some opportunities really showed the skill they possess. I m looking forward to getting on a plane tomorrow morning and getting ready for Senior Night on Saturday. Palmquist was the only Pioneer to play the entire 110 minutes and last week s Summit League Defensive Player of the Week Scott DeVoss (Centennial, Colo.) led all Denver field players with 91 minutes played. Junior striker Andre Shinyashiki (Sao Paulo, Brazil) led all players with six shots, putting two of the six on target. DENVER Junior striker Andre Shinyashiki (Sao Paulo, Brazil) equalized with 16 seconds left in regulation, and senior co-captain Graham Smith (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) converted a 93rd minute penalty to keep the University of Denver men s soccer team in first place in the Summit League table with a 2-1 win over Omaha on Saturday night at the University of Denver Soccer Stadium. I think it was pretty obvious what their tactics were coming in, head coach Jamie Franks said. They only had four shots, and were trying to slow the game down by disrupting play and wasting time. For us, a huge point at halftime was to not get frustrated by that and be resilient. The fact that we waited until there was 16 seconds left was a little concerning, but at the end of the day, their goalkeeper made a couple really good saves, and we missed a couple easy chances. My team grew up tonight. I think it was Alex Underwood that said, we re not going to lose this game. We ve been missing that confidence and demand from eachother all season. I m glad we found it tonight, because when we do have it, we re a tough team to beat. After Denver outshot Omaha 8-2 in the first half, and was continuing to create the chances in the second, the visitors netted the opener against the run of play in the 78th minute when Emmanuel Hamzat scored his seventh goal of the season off a long-throw from Seth Rinderknecht. In the 36th minute, New Mexico went down to 10-men as Antoine Vial was given his marching orders. Denver s man-advantage didn t last long however, as redshirt-freshman Blake Moncur (Fort Collins, Colo.) was shown a straight red card just 73 seconds later to even the match at 10 a side. Denver (8-6-1, Summit) outshot New Mexico (8-4-3, C-USA) in the match. The Pioneers continued to press for the equalizer, but had four shots turned aside by Omaha goalkeeper Joseph Ghitis. Finally freshman Jacob Stensson (Stockholm, Sweden) and senior co-captain Alex Underwood (Winnetka, Ill.) combined down the right channel. Stensson touched it around his defender and got a cross off near the end line, finding the head of Shinyashiki who beat his mark in the air and kissed it off the inside of the back post and in for his ninth goal of the campaign. Denver carried the momentum from the equalizer into extra time, and were ultimately rewarded with a 93rd minute penalty to improve to in the Summit League. Redshirt-senior Blake Elder (Fort Worth, Texas) took the ball off the feet of Shinyashiki in the area and hit a shot towards frame that hit the arm of Jacob Weiler in an unnatural position and referee Heber Estrada pointed to the spot. Smith converted his third goal of the season to propel the Pioneers to the victory in their final home match of the campaign. The Pioneers finished the match with a 16-4 edge in shots. Denver needs just a point at Western Illinois next weekend to take both the top seed into the 2017 Summit League Championships, and the right to host the 2018 Summit League Men s Soccer Championships. DENVERPIONEERS.COM 25

2017 BOX SCORES MACOMB, Ill. Senior co-captain Alex Underwood (Winnetka, Ill.) tucked a ninth-minute finish inside the post to lead Denver to an outright Summit League Championship with a 1-0 win over Western Illinois on Saturday afternoon at John MacKenzie Field. A week ago, Denver clinched at least a share of its fifth-straight Summit League crown with a 2-1 extra time win over Omaha. This Saturday s victory wrapped-up the No. 1 seed in next week s Summit League Tournament for the Pioneers, and gave the program the right to host the 2018 Summit League Men s Soccer Championships. I m really proud of my group to be able to come out here and win 1-0 in a game that had a lot on the line. It shows the character and the leadership that this group has, head coach Jamie Franks said. It wasn t a pretty game, it never is against Western. They put a lot of balls on top of you and make you defend. For the most part we didn t give them too many good chances. Redshirt-sophomore midfielder Ryan Barlow (Coppell, Texas) setup the Denver goal, picking out Underwood, who buried his third goal of the season into the bottom left corner to give the Pioneers an early lead. Denver outshot the home side 9-5 in the opening 45 minutes and took the lead into the locker room. The Pioneers defense kept their seventh cleansheet of the season, including redshirt-junior Nick Gardner s (Marvin, N.C.) sixth of the campaign. Gardner was credited with five saves in the Pioneers 10th victory of the season. Denver has finished with double-digit wins in each of the six seasons that Franks has been with the program (including all three years as the head coach). This is a great moment in our program. To win a league regular season title five years in a row is a testament to the older guys. I m not sure how many senior groups can say that they ve won a conference title in all four seasons. As we ve gotten closer to knockout style soccer, my team has continued to improve in each game. Come Thursday we ll be fighting for our lives, and we have a lot of experience and victories in these type of games. I m looking forward to watching this group compete with their Proactive Fighting Football. OMAHA Redshirt-senior Blake Elder s (Fort Worth, Texas) first-half goal and the top-seeded [-/30] University of Denver men s soccer team s eighth cleansheet of the season booked the Pioneers ticket to Saturday s Summit League Final after a 1-0 win over Eastern Illinois on Thursday afternoon at Caniglia Field. The Pioneers outshot Eastern Illinois 11-5 in the match and held a 4-2 edge in corners. DENVERPIONEERS.COM 26
