Franck Dumas (Caen coach): 'Whether it was in terms of physical impact, playing our way out from the back, or desire, there was nothing there. We messed up everything, we made things easy for Lens by being completely absent in this game. I don't understand why. This was a match in which we were fighting for our lives. In all of the matches to come, we have to play for our lives. What disturbs me is that some members of my squad have been crying because they weren't playing; tonight we found out why.' Alexis Thébaux (Caen goalkeeper): 'It was a non-match. We saw that Lens had the greater desire. In this sort of game the team that wins the 50-50s wins the game.' Valbuena out for up to six weeks Marseille's title hopes have suffered a setback with attacking midfielder Mathieu Valbuena suffering knee ligament damage in training last Saturday. The diminutive French international was hurt in a tackle with Ghanaian André Ayew. 26-year-old Valbuena injured his left knee and it is estimated he faces between four and six weeks on the sidelines, meaning he will miss France's friendly with Brazil at the Stade de de France on February 9 and faces a race against time to be fit for Marseille's Champions League Round of 16 first leg clash with Premier League leaders Manchester United on February 23. Valbuena's injury gives OM coach Didier Deschamps an unwanted selection headache. Brazilian centre-forward Brandao is suspended for Sunday's trip to Monaco, which may mean a recall to the starting line-up for ex-nice forward Loïc Rémy. Deschamps was not the only person forced to change plans by the injury. 2 OM having been knocked out of the French Cup at the Round of 64 stage. Christophe Hutteaux, Valbuena's agent, explained: 'In the end he had to cancel everything and rest up with his family.' Bordeaux back Tigana Bordeaux president Jean-Louis Triaud has given his backing to Jean Tigana, saying there is no question of parting company with the coach who took over at Les Girondins before the start of the current season. Bordeaux crashed out of the French Cup at the Round of 32 stage on Saturday, beaten 1-0 at Ligue 2 outfit Angers, a result described by Tigana as the biggest disappointment of his coaching career. After the game the former Monaco coach said 'I never give up' and he has now been given a vote of confidence by Triaud. 'Let the papers talk,' said the club president. 'They don't control what goes on at clubs. I know they need something to write about but we are going to carry on down our path and keep working. He still has a year and a half on his Bordeaux contract, so the question does not even arise.' Video session on 'rest' day Monday was supposed to be a rest day for the players but, following the Angers loss, they were called into the club's Haillan training ground for a video analysis session. Triaud said: 'The pictures are significant and I wanted to provoke a reaction from the players. I wanted them to comment on what they were seeing and provide explanations.' Full-back Matthieu Chalmé added: 'Nobody can hide in a video session. It always puts the finger on what hurts. It's not designed to stigmatise an individual player or an area of the team, but to provide explanations so that we can find solutions to our problems.' OM: Benzema 'bid' was 'a joke' Marseille president Jean-Claude Dassier has admitted he was joking when he suggested that OM could 'reasonably' hope to sign Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema in a Sunday night TV appearance. Dassier featured in a football talk show on M6, the French terrestrial channel that owns Bordeaux, and said on the subject of signing the former Lyon star: 'We can reasonably think about it.' The president went on to highlight Benzema's high salary as a potential stumbling block, something he underscored on Monday. Dassier said: 'There are no thoughts there for me to elaborate upon. It was a joke. Of course, we thought about it. But people have to stop the buzz around this. Unfortunately salaries are what they are. For now there is nothing there. 3 him.' OM have confirmed that attacking midfielder Mathieu Valbuena will be out for five to six weeks. The French international has a partial ligament rupture to his left knee and a calf strain. 'Snow' ball fines for PSG and Monaco The LFP's Competitions Commission has sanctioned Paris Saint-Germain and Monaco following the use of a match ball which was not the 'snow' version of the official Ligue 1 ball. The PSG-Monaco match on December took place on a pitch partially covered with snow with a ball that was not the 'snow' version of the official Ligue 1 ball. PSG and Monaco both contravened competitions article 317 of the LFP which stipulates that all Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 matches must be played with official balls. Representatives of both clubs pleaded guilty to the charge and the competitions commission handed down a fine of 7500 euros to PSG and 5000 euros to Monaco. As a reminder, the LFP states that the utilisation of a single ball, adopted by all major competitions and the big European leagues, provides the assurance of sporting equity. The LFP chose PUMA as official match ball provider for Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 football. The quality of the ball, produced to strict FIFA standards, has been recognised unanimously by players and coaches in Ligue 1 and Ligue 2. More than 1100 professional games have been played in France with official PUMA balls since the season without controversy. At the demand of the LFP, PUMA developed a 'snow' ball, technically identical to the usual official ball used in Ligue 1 and Ligue 2. Numerous games have been played with the 'snow' ball, be it in Ligue 1 (at Caen), in Ligue 2 (at Angers, Boulogne, Grenoble and Reims), and in several other European countries, without any technical problems or visibility issues arising. The 'snow' ball has been approved by FIFA, the LFP and the Direction Nationale de l'arbitrage (referees' controlling body), and was delivered to all clubs in October Frau hoping for more derby joy Lille striker Pierre-Alain Frau is hoping to maintain his impressive record in North derbies when Lens come calling this weekend, although he is expecting a tough battle against a revived Sang et Or. Lille romped to a 4-1 win when the sides met at the Stade Félix-Bollaert in week five, with Frau coming off the bench to score twice that evening. 4 Battling for survival Frau played 20 games on-loan at Lens from Lyon in the second-half of the season, scoring five goals. He insists that their threat should not be underestimated, although he admits that these are the type of matches that LOSC's title hopefuls should be winning. 'They are battling for survival and they will come here with plenty of desire,' he said. 'But they should be looking at us and thinking that this will be a tough test for them too. We have been performing well at home recently.' 'Different mentality' Rudi Garcia's side are in fact unbeaten in their last eight home outings in all competitions, although they managed only a narrow 1-0 success against near neighbours Wasquehal of the fifth-tier CFA2 in the French Cup last time out. 'Even against a fifth division side, we had one or two difficulties, so it will definitely not be easy against Lens. They have restored a bit of confidence and enthusiasm since changing coach. They have a different mentality now. This is a derby and we know we are not going to win 5-0,' said the 30 year-old. Lucky charm Frau - who is set to leave the North in the summer when his contract expires - holds fond memories of his six-month spell at Lens, saying: 'Lens should be one of the very biggest clubs in France, but two or three bad decisions have taken them in the wrong direction. It can happen anywhere, but it's a shame because Lens is a great club, with a superb infrastructure and a good president. 'I have happy memories of my time there. We were competing at the top of the table, and competing with Lille. It was an enjoyable time for me. I have never been on the losing side in this fixture, although I had better not say that too much in case it brings bad luck!' With Eden Hazard, Gervinho and Moussa Sow in such terrific form right now, Frau is unlikely to start the game this weekend, but Lille coach Rudi Garcia knows he will have a lucky charm sitting on the bench. Frustrated Fernando calls for togetherness Bordeaux's Brazilian stalwart Fernando has admitted that the coach and players need to pull together to help drag Les Girondins out of their current sticky patch. 5 'To be knocked out of the only French competition I have not won by a lower-league side was extremely frustrating,' he acknowledged in an interview with Sud Ouest. 'We simply weren?t good enough. Individually, we the players didn't prepare for the game as we should have done.' 'Understand the fans anger' The Bordeaux fans have not been slow to voice their displeasure this week, with a group of around twenty interrupting the squad's training session on Tuesday, and the Brazilian admits their reaction is understandable. 'They want to see their team competing at the top of the table. Given what the club means to them, I can understand their anger. Their reaction does not surprise me. I just want to win our next game so that such a thing does not happen again.' 'Pull together' Club president Jean-Louis Triaud gave his support to embattled coach Tigana after a meeting with the players on Monday, and Fernando believes there were plenty of positives to take from that get-together. 'We spent two hours together, talking about our situation. Football is a team sport in which everyone needs to be on top of their game. I cannot make demands of others if I am not at my best myself. But if everyone pulls together, then we can get a result on Sunday,' he said. 'The coach gave us his thoughts on the situation and we expressed our wish to work more on our organisation and positioning. He listened to us. He has worked with some great players in his time. Here, he has a young squad, and many of the younger lads could benefit from his experience of coaching in France, England and Turkey. I think he understands that we need him to be even closer to us to help guide us through this situation. But the players are the ones that need to perform out on the pitch.' Return to midfield? The Brazilian, who has been deployed in central defence this season, also hinted that a return to midfield when Les Girondins play host to Nice on Sunday afternoon might be to the benefit of the whole team. 'I don?t think that would solve all our problems, but it would maybe help us to find a better balance and a greater solidity. In previous years, myself and Alou (Diarra) have worked really well together as we complement each other. It would maybe help Jaro (Plasil) too, as he prefers to get on the ball closer to the strikers.' Dutchman for Rennes Rennes have announced the signing of Dutch striker John Verhoek on a four-and-a-half-year contract. Verhoek arrives from Den Bosch in the Dutch second division, where he has netted ten goals in seventeen games this season. 6 one for the future, with Rennes general manager Pierre Dréossi telling the club's official website: 'He is a young player with lots of potential and a profile that we didn't already have at the club. He is a powerful player, very good in the air, a typical, athletic, penalty-box striker that also brings others into the game.' 'Not the new Asamoah Gyan' Verhoek trained with his new team-mates for the first time on Wednesday morning, but Dréossi admitted that it may be a while before he makes his Ligue 1 bow. 'We will need to show some patience, because there is a clear difference between the Dutch second division and the top end of Ligue 1,' he said. 'We have high hopes for him for the future. He is not here to replace Asamoah Gyan. I think he has the potential to pleasantly surprise a few people, like Georges Mandjeck has done. He may be unknown, but we are aware of his potential. Given time he can become a very good player for Rennes.' 'Impossible not to progress at Rennes' Meanwhile, the player himself looked forward to the challenge of proving himself at a higher level, saying: 'I'm going to have to adapt quickly, but my first training session went well. When a cub like Rennes comes along, it is impossible to turn them down. There were offers from clubs in England, Germany and the Netherlands, but the challenge in store here excited me. They are one of the best clubs in France at bringing on young players. I think it will be impossible for me not to progress here.' Verhoek is the Breton club's second signing of the January transfer window following the earlier arrival of Razak Boukari from Lens, and Dréossi hinted that there may be further reinforcements before the month is up. 'Anything is possible,' he said. 'We will see what opportunities arise, although one thing that is certain is that we will not be signing a defender. We are well covered in that area for the rest of this season.' Rémy: 'Average at best' France international striker Loïc Rémy admits that he has failed to produce his best form in his first six months at Marseille. Rémy is Marseille's joint-top scorer in Ligue 1 this season, alongside Lucho González, with five goals. However, he accepts that OM fans have yet to see him at his best since his big-money summer transfer from Nice, and that he can have few complaints at losing his place in Didier Deschamps' starting eleven. 'If I had to rate my season so far, I would say that I have been average at best,' he admitted frankly in an interview with the sports daily L?Equipe. 'It has been like when I was at school, and my teachers would say I had the necessary capabilities but that I could always do better.' 7 'I need to win back my place in the side, although I am not going to complain about my current situation. It's not a punishment. To kick up a fuss about it would show me to be weak. I am not going to do that. It's not my philosophy. On the contrary, I think that whatever happens can help me to progress.' Inconsistent 24 year-old Rémy, who has also netted twice in the Champions League this season, admits that his inconsistency has let him down, but he is now hoping to seize the chance presented to him with Brandão suspended for this weekend's trip to Monaco and dimunitive winger Mathieu Valbuena ruled out for up to six weeks with a knee injury. 'My biggest fault has been my lack of consistency. I have blown hot and cold, and at OM consistency is vital if you want to keep your place in the team. I have maybe been lacking a bit of aggression as well, but I am working on that side of my game. The coach sometimes tells me that I am too nice. The coming games should be a good opportunity for me to show what I can do.' Diarra on way back to Ligue 1 Monaco have confirmed that an agreement has been reached with Real Madrid for the transfer of Mahamadou Diarra to the Stade Louis II. Both clubs announced news of the deal on their official websites, and the 29 year-old Malian international midfielder arrived in Monaco on Thursday evening to undergo a medical and discuss personal terms. Diarra won four league titles in four seasons with Lyon before moving to the Spanish giants in the summer of However, after being a regular in his first two seasons at the Santiago Bernabéu, he fell gradually out of favour, and the arrival of Emmanuel Adebayor - ironically formerly of Monaco - meant there was no longer space for Diarra in the Madrid squad. He will be the second confirmed new arrival in the Principality in the current transfer window, following the capture of Montpellier midfielder Grégory Lacombe on a loan deal until the end of the season. With Dieumerci Mbokani leaving for Wolfsburg in a similar deal, coach Laurent Banide is also hopeful of reinforcing his attack before the window slams shut at the end of the month. Spiro blog: Lille, the stuff of champions? The last time Lille were champions, Eden Hazard's mother wasn't even a glint in her grandmother's eye. Ligue 1 expert Matthew Spiro wonders if Rudi Garcia's swashbuckling team have what it takes to end the club's 57-year wait for a title. Four points clear with more than half the season gone, Lille are the new title favourites. 8 are showing no signs of letting up. The question is will Les Dogues tighten up as the finishing line approaches? Or will Garcia's tyros prove unstoppable? Here are some factors that need to be taken into consideration. Five reasons why Lille should believe: 1. Attacking verve: In terms of style, Lille are France's answer to Barcelona. They have tiny midfielders (Yohan Cabaye, Rio Mavuba and Florent Balmont), pace and skill on the flanks (Gervinho and Eden Hazard) and raw power in attack (Moussa Sow). Their play is based on short passing and interchanging positions. Hazard may start on the left but is just as likely to be spotted in the centre forward position or dropping deep to take the ball off the centre-backs. They score goals galore and are a delight to watch when they click. 2. Hazard class: The team that wins the league usually has the country's best player. Lucho Gonzalez saw Marseille home with some virtuoso midfield displays last season and Yoann Gourcuff was sensational throughout Bordeaux's title win. Hazard, after a slow start, is now in full flow and looks a good bet for the player of the year award. The 20 year-old Belgian is the ideal modern-day forward, capable of dribbling, passing and shooting at frightening pace. 3. Unpredictable approach: Lille's attacking threat does not only emanate from the speed of their front three. Cabaye and Ludovic Obraniak both shoot well, take good set pieces and score regularly from midfield. Cabaye is particularly dangerous when afforded space. He loves to drop deep into the Andrea Pirlo?quarter-back? role and splits defences with his accurate long balls. If nothing else is working, Garcia also has the option of sending on the big man Tulio de Melo. 4. Strength in depth: Lille played the same XI on a regular basis last season and ultimately ran out of steam. This term they have a bigger squad and, so far, fewer injuries. Garcia has rotated more readily, knowing that his back-up players hardly weaken the team. The likes of Franck Beria, David Rozenhal, Obraniak, De Melo and Pierre-Alain Frau would be regulars in most Ligue 1 sides. 5. Garcia's tactical nous: When it comes to title run-ins, Garcia does not have the experience of Didier Deschamps or Claude Puel but he?s a cool customer and I don't see him buckling. As well as being one of the most intelligent coaches around, Garcia has proven himself as a shrewd man-manager. Knowing that expectations are higher at Lyon, PSG and Marseille, he will play the underdog card at every opportunity and look to keep his players out of the spotlight. Five causes for concern: 1. 9 Like last season, Lille are competing in the energy-sapping Europa League. They are also still in the Coupe de France. They could go a long way in both of those competitions which would lead to a glut of fixtures in the last two months of the campaign. Although Garcia has a bigger squad and is rotating his players cleverly, tiredness could yet become an issue again. 2. Hazard/Gervinho dependence: Obraniak will do a good job filling in on the wing from time to time, but you wonder what would happen if either Hazard or Gervinho had a lengthy lay-off. Lille's great strength is that they pose a huge threat from both wings thanks to those two men - should only one of them be available opposition would be able to grant special attention to that player. 3. Rami focus: The France centre-back has agreed to join Valencia at the end of the season. Could the impending move affect his concentration in the final weeks? Adil Rami's physical presence at the back is crucial - Aurélien Chedjou has not looked as comfortable when playing alongside Rozenhal - and Lille will need the strapping Corsican to stay strong until the very end. 4. A difficult run-in: Looking at the fixtures, Lille will need to navigate their way through two very testing periods. They have already lost to Lyon and Marseille and must do better in the return games. The northerners face Lyon and Marseille in back-to-back matches in a few weeks. If that is not ideal, nor is the fact that Lyon will have two days extra rest as they play in the Champions League on the Tuesday while Lille play PSV Eindhoven on the Thursday. The final month of the campaign is also tough, with games against Saint-Etienne, PSG and Rennes. 5. Lack of title know-how: Experience matters in title races and Lille do not possess much of that particular commodity. I mentioned that Garcia is a novice compared to Deschamps and Puel. Of the players, only Mickaël Landreau and Frau have tasted title glory in France before. If Lille start stumbling when it really matters, will they have the strength of character needed to get over the line? Le Mans' 'New Generation' home ready to open Ligue 2 title hopefuls Le Mans will play their first match at their brand new MMArena on Saturday in front of a sell-out crowd of 25,000. The Sarthe club were relegated from the top-flight last season but currently lie third in Ligue 2, and are therefore on course for an immediate return among the élite. The visit of another promotion-chasing side in Ajaccio means that the first match at the new venue should be worthy of the occasion. The arena, which was built at a cost of?102 million, has been labelled France's first 'new generation stadium.' It is the first ground in the country for which the naming rights have been sold - MMA will pay?1 million per year over ten years - while rechargeable cards will be accepted at kiosks within 01/28/2011 Ligue de Football Professionnel / Ligue1.com 9

10 the stadium rather than cash as a means of reducing queues. The Le Mans model is expected to be followed by the planned new stadia in Lille, Lyon and Nice. 'Home advantage' for Marseille Marseille have been drawn as the 'home' team for April's Coupe de la Ligue final against Montpellier at the Stade de France. Coming out of the hat first means the holders will be able to choose what colours they wear in the final and which dressing room they use at the national stadium. They will also be able to choose when they wish to use the Stade de France pitch for a pre-final training session. The final, which will be the seventeenth in the history of the Coupe de la Ligue, will be held on Saturday, 23 April. OM are looking to retain their trophy after defeating Auxerre in the semi-finals, while Montpellier won through to their first ever final after a dramatic extra-time triumph against Paris Saint-Germain. Tigana leads cries of disappointment Jean Tigana described losing 1-0 at Angers in the last 32 of the French Cup as 'the biggest disappointment of my coaching career.' Even the two Ligue 1 coaches that went through on Saturday were not happy. Chambéry (CFA2, D5) 1-1 Brest (Chambéry win 4-3 on penalties) Alex Dupont (Brest coach): 'In terms of spirit, I have nothing to criticise my players for. I don't have the feeling that they took this match lightly. We thought we'd done the hardest part by opening the scoring. That was without counting on the courage and willpower of Chambéry. At Issy-Les-Moulineaux and against Caen our lack of firepower could already be felt. We'll see what we can do before the close of the transfer window. We've got two or three leads.? When I scored, all that went through my head was that we were 1-0 up in extra-time and that we had a good chance of going on to win it. There was a lot of joy and we fought like warriors. It's maybe what we need to get going again in the league after our poor display at Lille.' Claude Puel (Lyon coach): 'Nice battled hard and that's Cup football. In the first half we were not able to change the rhythm to slice our way through. In the second half we missed chances and Lionel Letizi pulled off several fine saves. After that the game was decided by the role of the dice and a sending off. It hurts because the squad really wanted to win. We are very disappointed.' Scoring three goals is good, but I am not happy about conceding two. It remains a good win. Concerning Peguy Luyindula, what interests me is what goes on on the field, and to see him battle, to play with fantastic spirit, and work hard. He did all of that and was rewarded with a goal.' Ligue 1 clubs kept apart in last 16 draw The seven Ligue 1 clubs left in the French Cup have all been drawn against lower-level opposition. Holders PSG will travel south to play Martigues, while Lille are at home to Nantes. Lille goalkeeper Mickaël Landreau will be reunited with Les Canaris, now in Ligue 2, where he sprang to prominence.
