Meanwhile OM claimed their first win of 2017, 5-1 over Montpellier. All eyes in France were trained on Sunday's night's gala clash at the Parc des Princes, and they weren't disappoint as Paris Saint-Germain and leaders Monaco delivered a high-class battle, with Edinson Cavani bagging his 21st of the season late on (81', pen.) only to see Bernardo Silva's crisp strike from the edge of the area level matters in injury time (90'+2). The result saw Monaco maintain their place atop the Ligue 1 standings - on goal difference ahead of Nice - while Paris remain in third, leaving matters much as they were before the big clash, but with a sense of 'to be continued', with the two sides set to duke it out at distance for the remainder of the season - with the exception of the Coupe de la Ligue final, on Saturday April 1, which promises to be a thrilling occasion. "Perhaps after being 1-0 down, the draw isn't so bad, but we came here looking for the three points," said defiant Monaco boss Leonardo Jardim. "The title race is very tight. It won't be until April or May that it will be won." Opposite number Unai Emery agreed that there is a long way to go: "It was a tough match against a good team, who worked hard throughout the match. Overall, I think the result was a fair one," said the Spaniard, who sent latest signing Gonçalo Guedes on to make a promising debut late on. "The match was tough, and we did manage to break the deadlock. We were close to the win. We didn't get the best result tonight, but we are only three points off Nice and Monaco. The team that proves the most consistent between now and the end of the season will take the league title." Consistency hasn't been the word for OGC Nice in 2017, the Autumn Champions tumbling somewhat in the New Year, but on Sunday afternoon Lucien Favre's men turned in a fine performance to topple Guingamp 3-1 at the Allianz Riviera, with Mario Balotelli sealing the deal late on with his ninth of the campaign (87'). The win - their first in four Ligue 1 outings - saw them pile the pressure on fellow title challengers Monaco and PSG but boss Lucien Favre felt his side will need to be very much on their toes as they clash with Monaco - with whom they are locked on 49 points - at the Stade Louis II in Week 23. "It was a difficult game," said the Swiss tactician after the convincing win that saw key midfielder Jean-Michaël Seri mark his return from AFCON duties with Côte d'ivoire with a goal. "Guingamp did not have many chances but we backed off and we suffered. We must continue keep our level up throughout games and we will have a big one next Saturday in Monaco." Week 23 will Marseille looking to claim a first away win of 2017 after breaking their home duck in the New Year in style with a 5-1 hammering of Montpellier at the Stade Vélodrome to kick off the weekend's action. A hat-trick from Bafétimbi Gomis featured as Rudi Garcia's men - including brand-new signing Patrice Evra at left-back - ran riot. "It's not a kick-start, it's a response," said Garcia of the resounding victory. "We really wanted to get back to winning ways. We wanted to make amends, show the sort of team we can be. It's very nice to score five goals at the Vélodrome, to make our fans happy. Our first half was top class, but the first 20 minutes of the second were not good. But it's a great win in the end." Meanwhile Olympique Lyonnais failed to follow on from their win over Marseille in Week 21's Olympico, falling to a shock home defeat, 2-1 to LOSC. Rennes and Nantes drew 1-1 in the latest Brittany derby, Bastia were held 1-1 at home to Caen and Dijon claimed an important 3-2 win away to bottom club Lorient while Angers broke out of the drop zone with a 2-1 win over 19th-placed Metz. Week 22 reactions - Emery: 'A fair result' Paris Saint-Germain boss Unai Emery was pleased with his side's performance despite being caught by a late equaliser in the 1-1 draw at home to Monaco; opposite number Leonardo Jardim said the title race will go down to the wire. We spoke to the players pre-match about their mission and they showed extraordinary commitment. We still have to improve when it comes to taking our chances." Philippe Hinschberger (Metz coach): "At 11 against 10 it was already hard and it became impossible when we went down to nine players. Even when it was 11 v 11 we started badly. It was a miracle we equalised but we weren't able to stay level for more than two minutes." Friday, 27 January, 2016 Olympique de Marseille 5-1 Montpellier Hérault SC Rudi Garcia (Marseille coach): "It's not a kickstart, it's a response. We really wanted to get back to winning ways. We wanted to make amends, show the sort of team we can be. It's very nice to score five goals at the Vélodrome, to make our fans happy. Our first half was top class, but the first 20 minutes of the second were not good. We sat back too much, let Montpellier into it. But it's a great win in the end. Let it serve as a lesson that we have to be dominant for 95 minutes." Frédéric Hantz (Montpellier coach): "It's a harsh scoreline given our intentions, but it wasn't in the sense that it's happened before. We weren't good at either end of the pitch, we conceded very early, and then had chances. We had nine shots on target, which is a record for us this season. It's harsh, but it also reflects the difference between the two sides. We're having an extremely difficult January for a whole bunch of reasons. But I have said since the start that our season will be played out between 4 February and 11 March. It's difficult to explain our inconsistency. We've started January badly, we're lacking confidence. We're going to be in the relegation fight. We know that, and we need to stay together and work hard." Payet heads home to OM! France international forward Dimitri Payet has completed a 29 million Euro, five-and-a-half-year move to Olympique de Marseille, the club he left for West Ham United in Defender Grégory Sertic has also signed on. Payet went from strength to strength after his move to EPL side West Ham United but, citing family reasons, the attacking midfielder had to battle the club for a return to France and, on Monday, a 29 million Euro deal was struck to tie the France international to the ambitious southern giants for the next five and a half years. "I'm evidently very happy to be able to return here," said Payet as he was presented to the press at the club where he was a firm fan favourite, scoring 15 goals in 72 appearances between 2013 and "It's a club I know well and this is what I wanted. I want to thank everyone who was involved in the transfer. My choice was clear form the beginning: I wanted to come back here and be a part of the project that is starting. This uptick in optimism and impetus at the club has also attracted Bordeaux captain Grégory Sertic to leave the club whose youth academy he attended from the age of 16. Montpellier show Hantz the door Montpellier have relieved head coach Frédéric Hantz of his functions, replacing him with the interim duo of Jean-Louis Gasset and Ghislain Printant following the side's 5-1 humiliation in Marseille on Friday. Montpellier HSC have announced that head coach Frédéric Hantz has been sacked, with immediate effect, and will be replaced by former players Jean-Louis Gasset and Ghislain Printant. Hantz, appointed to replace Rolland Courbis in January of 2016, helped the club beat the drop in season However, the team have proven erratic in the current campaign and, after a 5-1 battering in Marseille capped a winless month of January, president Louis Nicollin opted to make a change at the helm of the senior team. "Montpellier Hérault Sport Club is aware of the gravity of the club's current sporting situation, as well as the foreseeable consequences. This gravity has forced our hand, given our concern for the players," read a communiqué published by the club on Monday. "As a consequence, we are announcing that head coach Frédéric Hantz and his assistant Arnaud Cormier have been relieved of their duties and will be paid out of their contracts. We have asked former MHSC players Jean-Louis Gasset and Ghislain Printant, who are both well qualified, to run the rule over our sporting situation in order to determine an urgent solution." Gasset, who spent his entire playing career with La Paillade before becoming assistant coach and, for one season, head honcho, is currently an assistant coach with Paris Saint-Germain while Printant was in charge of the club's reserve side between 2006 and 2010 and is a former coach of SC Bastia. As Dimitri Payet made his second Marseille debut, it was defender Doria who starred with an extra-time wonder-goal that clinched a 2-1 victory over Olympico rivals Lyon - and a place in the round of 16. Tuesday, January 31, 2017 Coupe de France, round of 32 Stade Vélodrome, Marseille Olympique de Marseile 2-1 Olympique Lyonnais (a.e.t.) Marseille's 'OM Champions' project has been bolstered by some big-name signings in the last week - notably those of Patrice Evra and Dimitri Payet - and while the former West Ham forward was rushed into the squad for this 'Olympian' cup tie against Lyon just a day after returning the Stade Vélodrome, it was Brazilian substitute Doria - who spent two yers on the outer at the Mediterranean club - who proved the hero. After stopper Rod Fanni had opened the scoring for OM with a header fro Maxime Lopez's corner (24'), Lyon's Corentin Tolisso got the breathless encounter back on level terms as he slotted home at the far post (64'). Locked at 1-1, the match went into extra time and OM boss Rudi Garcia brought Payet on for Florian Thauvin as the excitement reached fever pitch in the Stade Vélodrome. 7 After their 1-1 league draw with Monaco on Sunday night, Paris Saint-Germain were looking to bounce back and - thanks to a superb performance from a much-changed line-up, notably two-goal Julian Draxler, the capital club made short work of Rennes at Roazhon Park. Germany international Draxler drew first blood with a superb control and chipped finish after being played through by an inch-perfect long ball from captain on the night Thiago Motta (27'). Despite being without Edinson Cavani, Marco Verratti, Thiago Silva, Thomas Meunier and Angel Di Maria, Unai Emery's men fully exploited their early advantage, with Lucas firing home crisply (38') before Draxler completed his double with a fine finish (68'). After setting up Lucas and Draxler for his second, Hatem Ben Arfa, playing at centre-forward in place of Cavani, completed an excellent night for both him and the capital club by turning scorer when Javier Pastore picked him out with a quickly taken free-kick that made it 4-0 and put Paris' place in the last 16 beyond a shadow of a doubt (90'). FC Chambly 4-5 AS Monaco Monaco went close to following up on their impressive display against Paris by crashing out of the competition away to third-division side FC Chambly. Despite being 3-0 up when Kylian Mbappé struck just after the break (48'), Leonardo Jardim's men allowed minnows Chambly to score three second-half goals and force extra time. The principality club re-took the initiative, with Kévin N'Doram (96') and Kamil Glik (103') making it 5-3, but the Ligue 1 leaders had to ride their nerves right up to the final whistle after Romain Padovani pulled his side back to within a goal with a superb first-time finish (111'). Meanwhile, Angers SCO put their league struggles to one side as they disposed of top-flight rivals SM Caen 3-1 at home, thanks largely to a Thomas Mangani double from the spot (15', pen.; 82', pen.).
