2 PREVIEW : OLYMPIQUE LYONNAIS - LOSC LILLE MÉTROPOLE Feature Preview Olympique Lyonnais suffered massive disappointment in being knocked out of the Champions League in midweek, and need a positive result at LOSC Lille Métropole to continue harbouring ambitions of featuring in Europe next season. 'A total nightmare' was how French sports paper L'Equipe described OL's exit on penalties to unheralded Cypriots APOEL Nicosia on Wednesday, also summing up the feeling within the squad. "It's a big, big disappointment. We managed to create chances, but lacked that little something to get the goal we were chasing throughout the match," said coach Rémi Garde, whose team ended 120 minutes in Cyprus locked at 1-1 on aggregate. "We've still got some great things to play for this season, and that will help us get over this. When you're professional, you have to pick yourself up. We're going to give our all that this doesn't mark the end of a run in terms of the Champions League." A place in the top three appears - on current form - unlikely, however. Last weekend's 2-0 defeat at relegation-threatened AS Nancy Lorraine left Garde's men without a win in five league games and saw them slip to a season-low seventh place, seven points adrift of this weekend's opponents, who currently occupy that highly-coveted third place. If the L1 season had started at the turn of the year instead of last August, Lyon would be prime candidates for relegation as they boast a single league win all year. They do, however, have a good record at Stade Municipal de Gerland this season, despite failing to win their last two league games there. They also have the comfort of knowing they vanquished Lille on home soil only last January to continue their progress in the Coupe de la Ligue, though they will need to be more enterprising than they were last weekend in Lorraine to overcome the Ligue 1 champions again and improve their prospects of top-class European football. "Given how we've played since the start of the season, I think we deserve to be where we are. If we want to finish in the top three, we're all really going to have to up our game," said goalkeeper Hugo Lloris. "These sorts of games, against our direct rivals for a top-three finish, are going to be decisive. We know what we have to do against Lille." Knowing is one thing, doing it entirely another. OL do comfortably hold the upper hand in meetings between the pair in France's former capital, but were beaten in the north by the champions earlier this season, and pale in comparison in terms of recent form. Though they have hardly been faultless, Lille are unbeaten in four league encounters, and would have avoided a second successive draw if they had not turned a 2-0 lead into a 2-2 draw at home to AJ Auxerre last weekend. "There's a real feeling of having wasted an opportunity. We led 2-0 and were handling the fact that we were down to ten men, but then we lacked discipline and intelligence. We're the main culprits," said Rudi Garcia, who saw Auxerre score twice in the last ten minutes after both sides had had a man sent off. "When it went to ten against ten, we thought we'd won it. We have to analyse this situation. There are fundamentals in defence that have to be respected. It's a big problem. We should have won the game, and we're going to have to put it right quickly." While missed opportunities have become something of a bad habit at home, Lille have proven more ruthless on their travels. They boast the best away record in the division, the joint-lowest tally of goals conceded, and have displayed remarkable spirit in picking up ten points from the five away games in which they have conceded the opening goal. "Each time that we're dominating, doubt creeps in at the slightest setback. We're still third though. We've got to forget about this disappointment quickly, and try to get back on track against Lyon," said Lille's ex-ol midfielder Florent Balmont after the draw with Auxerre. 3 - HISTORY: The duo have met 37 times in Ligue 1 in Lyon with Olympique Lyonnais winning 23 of those matches while LOSC Lille Métropole have triumphed on only five occasions at Stade Municipal de Gerland. - OL have scored exactly double the number of goals scored by Lille in their Ligue 1 meetings - 72 to Lyon are unbeaten in five meetings with Lille on home soil, winning twice. - LAST SEASON: Lyon scored a 3-1 victory in Week 9. Lisandro Lopez (3', 56' pen) and Yoann Gourcuff (41') got the hosts' goals with Moussa Sow (52') replying for the eventual champions. OL's Jérémy Pied was sent off (70') after picking up two yellow cards in just eight minutes. The pair drew 1-1 in the reverse fixture in Week 25 - Sow (8') gave the hosts the lead but Kim Kallstrom equalised (26'). - THIS SEASON: Lille won 3-1 in Week 11. After Jimmy Briand gave OL the lead on 22 minutes, Sow levelled in first-half stoppage time (45+1') before Marko Basa (65') and Joe Cole (83') struck - The two also met in the quarter-finals of the Coupe de la Ligue on 11 January. OL won 2-1, despite having been reduced to ten men after just 11 minutes when Mouhamadou Dabo was shown a straight red card. Cole (28') then put Lille in front before Kim Kallstrom (41') and Lisandro (65') edged OL through. Lille's Mathieu Debuchy was sent off eight minutes from time for a second bookable offence. - Debuchy scored in Lille's 3-1 win at OL in Week 19 of the campaign - Lille's sole victory in ten visits. - Lille have not won in six visits to Lyon in all competitions (3 draws, 3 defeats). However, they have managed to score at least once on their last seven visits in all competitions. - Lisandro has scored six goals in four competitive fixtures against Lille. - OL have won just one of their last six L1 matches against a reigning champion, beating Olympique de Marseille 3-2 in May OLYMPIQUE LYONNAIS - GENERAL: Lyon are seventh in the table with 40 points from 26 games (12W, 4D, 10L). They are three points behind the trio of clubs ahead of them and seven points behind third-placed Lille. - OL were beaten 2-0 at AS Nancy Lorraine last weekend. Sébastien Puygrenier (66') and Djamel Bakar (72') scored for the hosts to leave OL without a win in five L1 games for the first time since December OL have won only one of their seven L1 games since the turn of the year, losing four of those matches. - If the season had started on New Year's Day, OL would currently be 17th with the joint-worst defensive record in the division (13 goals conceded, with Lorient). - Lyon have already suffered ten defeats in L1 this season, the most in any season since when they lost ten games in the whole campaign. - Rémi Garde's side topped the table after Week 6, and currently find themselves out of the top six for the first time this season. - They were unbeaten in their first six matches, and had won four league games in a row before losing at Valenciennes in their last game before the winter break. - OL are fourth in the attack table with 41 goals scored. - Bafétimbi Gomis is OL's top scorer with ten goals. - Michel Bastos is third in the L1 assists table with eight. - Only Lille (21) have scored more goals from set-pieces than OL (15, with Toulouse FC) while OL and Lille boast the highest tally of goals scored from corners (8) in the division. - OL are joint-12th in the defence table with 34 goals conceded. - OL have conceded at least one goal in their last nine league matches. Coach Rémi Garde and fitness coach Robert Duverne face a disciplinary hearing on 22 March stemming from incidents at the same match. - During the night of Tuesday/Wednesday, supporters of APOEL sounded car horns and set off fireworks outside the hotel where OL were staying. - Former OL player, Bryan Bergougnoux, currently at Omonia Nicosia, visited the OL squad during their stay in Cyprus. - Brazilian defender Cris announced during the week that he thought he could "play until 36 or 37 years old." They start Wk 27 seven points behind second-placed Montpellier and eight points behind leaders PSG. - Lille threw away a 2-0 lead to draw 2-2 at home to AJ Auxerre last weekend. Eden Hazard (34', 63' pen) put the hosts in charge, despite a 41st-minute red card shown to Mauro Cetto for a second bookable offence. The visitors' Anthony Le Tallec was then dismissed (68'), but Ben Sahar (80') and Cédric Hengbart (84') earned the Burgundy club an unexpected point. - LOSC are unbeaten in four league games, but have drawn the last two. - Lille have suffered as many defeats in all competitions (4) in 2012 as they did in the whole first half of the season, and have now suffered as many defeats in the current campaign as they did in the whole of the last one. - Lille recorded their first league defeat in 18 matches when they were beaten 2-0 at Olympique de Marseille in their first game back after the winter break - Loïc Rémy scored twice in the second half for the hosts (61', 83'). - Before losing in Marseille, LOSC had gone a club record 17 league games unbeaten since losing 1-0 at home to Montpellier Hérault SC. Victory would have seen them into the knockout stages. They also missed out on the Europa League as a consequence of CSKA Moscow's 2-1 win at Inter Milan on the same evening as the Ligue 1 champions ended bottom of Group B. - TROPHÉE DES CHAMPIONS: Lille lost 5-4 to Marseille in the traditional season-opener in Tangiers. Olympique Lyonnais - Last season Lyon finished third in Ligue 1, a full 12 points behind champions Lille. Knocked out of all cup competitions early, was OL's third successive season without a trophy. - Last season's third-place did mean that Lyon have not finished outside the top three, and have qualified for the Champions League, for the last 13 seasons in a row. - Lyon parted company with coach Claude Puel last summer.
