2 PREVIEW : SC BASTIA - OLYMPIQUE LYONNAIS Feature Preview Olympique Lyonnais travel to Corsica to face SC Bastia on Saturday, with the visitors needing a win to keep the pressure on Ligue 1 leaders Paris Saint-Germain, while the home side look to pull away from the relegation zone. Lyon were defensively solid but flat going forward in last weekend's goalless draw with Marseille at the Stade de Gerland, a result that means they have now won just three of their last eight matches. It is not the form of champions, and Rémi Garde's side have fallen four points adrift of PSG at the top. But with PSG facing a tough trip to Saint-Etienne on Sunday, there could be a chance for Lyon to reduce the gap once again this weekend. OL's away record this season has generally been good, although they have already been beaten in Corsica in 2013, going down 3-1 at Ajaccio last month, and have historically struggled in Bastia, winning just four times there in the top flight. Bastia's needs are very different to those of Lyon. Last season's Ligue 2 champions started the weekend just three points clear of the relegation zone and are on a run of just one win in their last eight outings. However, Garde is expecting his side to be in for a tough afternoon in front of a hostile crowd at the Stade Armand-Cesari. "Bastia can ill-afford a slip-up," he said. "They are fighting against relegation and are difficult to beat at home. We are going there to pick up points because we have dropped a lot in the last few weeks. I expect my team to do better both defensively and going forward. We need to be more clinical but must not lose our balance." While Lyon's lack of a finishing touch against Marseille was unusual for them, Bastia have struggled badly in front of goal in recent weeks. They have scored just two goals in their last eight outings, a record that has prevented them from capitalising on some much-improved defending since France international Mickaël Landreau signed during the winter break. "Now we just need to find a better balance," said full-back Gilles Cioni, as Bastia come into this game on the back of a 1-0 reverse in Bordeaux last time out. "At the start of the season we were scoring and conceding a lot. Now we are starting to get things right at the back. We need to keep defending as we have been and start scoring again." The good news for Bastia this weekend is that Anthony Modeste could feature again after sitting out the clash against his parent club. In addition, while Jérôme Rothen is banned, Florian Thauvin is available again after suspension, as are Sylvain Marchal and Sambou Yatabaré. "I don't see why we can't be capable of beating them especially with the right spirit and with 15,000 fans behind us at Furiani," added Cioni, sending out a rallying cry to the club's passionate support. For Lyon, the return of Jimmy Briand and Yoann Gourcuff to fitness means Garde has pretty much a full strength squad to choose from, but the form of others means that duo may once again have to wait for their chance this weekend. I have appreciated his attitude and he has trained well this week." -HISTORY: Bastia have a good record at home to Lyon in the top flight. The sides have met 26 times in Corsica, with Bastia winning 17, Lyon just four and the remaining five meetings ending in draws. -Bastia have scored 50 goals in this fixture, compared to just 18 for Lyon. -Earlier this season, Lyon beat Bastia 5-2 at the Stade de Gerland in Week 11, on November 4. Maxime Gonalons (5'), Alexandre Lacazette (26'), Lisandro López (pen-56'), Jimmy Briand (90+3') and Steed Malbranque (pen-90+5') scored for OL, while Wahbi Khazri (28') and Jérôme Rothen (pen-32') netted for Bastia. Dejan Lovren (30') and Fethi Harek (55') were both sent off as each team finished with ten men. -The clubs have not met in Corsica since February 2005, when Michael Essien - who left Bastia for Lyon in put OL in front before Pascal Chimbonda equalised. Anthony Réveillère is the only survivor from that day in line to feature this weekend. -Bastia last beat Lyon at home in January 2003, when Michael Essien and Florian Maurice - who played for OL earlier in his career and is now in charge of Lyon's scouting set-up - scored the goals. -Lyon last won in Bastia in August 2001, when Jacek Bak and Juninho scored OL's goals in a 2-1 victory. Lyon went on to win their first-ever title that season. -Bastia's biggest wins in this fixture remain a 4-0 success in February 1969 and a 5-1 victory in September Lyon's biggest win in Corsica in the top flight remains a 4-2 victory in August SC BASTIA -GENERAL: Bastia came into Week 29 in 14th place in Ligue 1 with 30 points from 28 games. They are three points clear of the relegation zone and two points adrift of Ajaccio in 13th. -Bastia have won eight, drawn six and lost 14 of their games to date. They have won just one of their last eight outings. -After 28 games of Bastia's last top-flight campaign, season , they lay in the relegation zone, in 18th spot with 26 points. -Frédéric Hantz's side were second in the table after Week 1, and spent the first four weeks of the season in the top half. They have been in the bottom half ever since, reaching a low of 17th after a 3-0 defeat at Brest in Week 13. -Bastia lost 1-0 away to Bordeaux in their last outing, with Cheick Diabaté (57') scoring the only goal of the game. -The Bastia line-up at Bordeaux: Landreau; Cioni, Mary, Choplin, Palmieri; Khazri, Faty (Sans, 90'); Inkoom (Harek, 54'), Ilan (Barbato, 65'), Beauvue; Maoulida. -Bastia have scored 30 goals this season. They have failed to score at all in 14 matches, and have scored just twice in their last eight matches. -Anthony Modeste is Bastia's leading league scorer with nine goals, followed by Wahbi Khazri and Toifilou Maoulida, who have four each. Modeste has 11 in all competitions, but has not scored in any of his eight appearances in Maoulida has six altogether. -Khazri has also provided five assists, while Jérôme Rothen has laid on four goals. -Bastia have the worst defensive record in Ligue 1, having conceded 52 goals. Ilan has made eight appearances from the bench. -Bastia lie bottom of the Fair Play table, having received 68 bookings - more than any other club - and seven red cards, a figure matched only by Rennes. Ilan (v Rennes, Wk 3), Gaël Angoula (v Ajaccio, 9), Fethi Harek (v Lyon, Wk 11), Françis Marque (v Brest, Wk 13), Anthony Modeste (v Lorient, Wk 14), Jérôme Rothen and Florian Thauvin (both v Ajaccio, Wk 27) have all been dismissed this season. -Sylvain Marchal made his 251st top-flight appearance in his last outing against Ajaccio. -Anthony Modeste has had 90 shots on goal. They have won six, drawn one and lost six of their 13 games in front of their own fans, collecting a total of 19 points. -Bastia's home match against Marseille on December 12, a 2-1 defeat, was played behind closed doors, while they had to play their home fixtures against Nancy (4-2, Wk 19), Rennes (0-2, Wk 21) and Evian TG (0-0, Wk 23) on neutral territory as punishments for persistent crowd trouble. The matches against Nancy and Rennes were played in Gueugnon, with the Evian encounter staged in Auxerre. -The 1-0 win against Ajaccio two weeks ago was therefore Bastia's first win at the Stade Armand-Cesari since beating Lorient 2-1 on November 24. -Frédéric Hantz's side have scored 18 goals and conceded 22 at home. They have let in more goals at home than any other club. -Their average attendance so far this season is 10,621, the fourth-lowest. However, Florian Thauvin is available again after suspension, as are Sylvain Marchal and Sambou Yatabaré. -INJURIES: Captain Yannick Cahuzac is out recovering from a fractured arm. -GENERAL: Lyon came into Week 29 in second place in the Ligue 1 table with 53 points from 28 games. They trailed leaders Paris Saint-Germain by four points and sat three points ahead of Marseille in third. -Lyon have won 15, drawn eight and lost five of their games to date. This is OL's best record 28 games into a season since , when they were top with 53 points. -Garde's side sat seventh in the table after Week 1, but have not been lower than third since. Gomis has 17 in all competitions, while Lisandro has 11 in total. -Gomis has scored 84 Ligue 1 goals in his career. Of all the players currently active in Ligue 1, only FC Lorient's Ludovic Giuly (85) has more to his name. Gomis has now reached double figures in seven consecutive seasons. -Steed Malbranque has provided seven assists, while Clément Grénier, Bafétimbi Gomis and Alexandre Lacazette have all laid on three. -Lyon have conceded just 26 goals this season. Only three clubs (PSG, Saint-Etienne, Bordeaux) had conceded fewer coming into Week 28. They have kept 11 clean sheets and have conceded three goals on three separate occasions. -OL have conceded only ten goals in the first half of games this season. -No Lyon player has played in every game this season, although Maxime Gonalons and Rémy Vercoutre have started 26 of the 28 games. Bafétimbi Gomis (25 starts, two sub appearances) has made the most appearances. -All 12 of Yassine Benzia's appearances have come from the bench. Gueïda Fofana has come off the bench on nine occasions. -OL were tenth in the Fair Play table coming into Week 29. They have had 44 yellow cards and four reds. Dejan Lovren has been sent off three times: against Bastia in Week 11, versus Nice in Week 19, and again versus Ajaccio in Week 23. Mouhamadou Dabo saw red at Saint-Etienne (Wk 16). -Lyon are Ligue 1's possession kings, averaging 56 percent per game coming into the weekend. -Lyon have made an average of 515 passes per game this season, a tally bettered only by PSG and Lille coming into the weekend. -Maxime Gonalons has completed 1565 passes, considerably more than any other player in Ligue this season. He has made 1755 passes in total, a figure bettered only by Etienne Capoue of Toulouse. -Anthony Réveillère is in line to start a Ligue 1 game for the 402nd time. He reached the 400 mark in the home meeting with Lorient three weeks ago. Now 33, he made his debut for Rennes at Bastia in February Mouhamadou Dabo made his 150th Ligue 1 appearance last weekend. -Jimmy Briand has made 249 Ligue 1 appearances and has scored 49 goals. -AWAY FORM: Lyon have won six, drawn five and lost three of their 14 away games to date, taking 23 points on their travels. SC Bastia - Sporting Club de Bastia are back in Ligue 1 for the first time since season when they were relegated after finishing 19th, ending a run of 11 consecutive seasons in the top flight. - The Corsican club won the Ligue 2 title last season to seal a second consecutive promotion, following in the footsteps of Evian-Thonon-Gaillard and Arles-Avignon before them. They have not lost a home league game at the Stade Armand-Cesari in either of the last two seasons. - Midfielder Jérôme Rothen was named Ligue 2's Player of the Season for , while Magno Novaes was named goalkeeper of the year and Frédéric Hantz coach of the year.
