2 PREVIEW : STADE BRESTOIS 29 - OLYMPIQUE LYONNAIS Feature Preview Olympique Lyonnais will go in search of their first L1 win at Stade Brestois 29 in 23 years when the title challengers head to Brittany on Sunday. In seven previous visits to the far western tip of France, OL have triumphed only once, picking up a 2-0 win in September Just two points have been earned from their three visits to the Stade Francis Le Blé since, but Rémi Garde's men can ill afford to allow any points to slip through their fingers if they are to remain within touching distance of leaders Paris Saint-Germain. A fine 3-1 win over another Breton club, FC Lorient, last Sunday initially pulled OL level on points with PSG before Carlo Ancelotti's men beat Olympique de Marseille later the same day, a result which gave OL a five-point cushion over third-placed OM, whom they host next weekend. While a first L1 title since 2008 would naturally be welcomed at the Stade Municipal de Gerland, it is a return to the highest level of European club football that remains the primary goal. "I'm not going to say something new: our objective is to qualify for the Champions League," acknowledged goalkeeper Rémy Vercoutre, whose club did not feature in Europe's elite competition for the first time since 2000 this season. The experienced custodian even believes the Champions League could prove his club's best ally in the race for the Ligue 1 title. "The Champions League is something which does you good mentally, but costs you physically. The days after European games are always very difficult. We've experienced that in the past. Paris had difficulties against Sochaux [losing 3-2] after their fabulous performance against Valencia. We could say that that's in our favour. But we have to keep our heads as they have strength in depth which few teams have." On paper, the OL squad looks much thinner than that of the capital club, but the unfamiliar names of a number of youngsters utilised by Garde this season hide burgeoning talents. Top scorer Bafétimbi Gomis watched the entire 90 minutes against Lorient from the bench while youth academy products Rachid Ghezzal scored and Yassine Benzia teed up Arnold Mvuemba for OL's third alongside now established first-teamers Clément Grenier, Samuel Umtiti and Alexandre Lacazette. The win over Les Merlus, which was their second successive L1 triumph and extended OL's unbeaten run to three league games in all competitions, confirmed a return to form after three successive competitive defeats. It also provided further evidence that the fluid Lyon game of the first half of the campaign has returned with a vengeance, the fruit of two fine yet ultimately unrewarding displays against Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League, a competition they left with their heads held high in stark contrast to their shock Champions League exit at the hands of APOEL Nicosia last season. "We were less annoyed with ourselves; and had the satisfaction of having got back to playing like we know we can. That did us some good because - for a while there - we'd lost everything," admitted Lacazette, referring to back-to-back 3-1 defeats to AC Ajaccio and LOSC Lille before an agonising 2-1 loss in the first leg at White Hart Lane. "Perhaps the transfer window was hard for some people. Perhaps we just had a dip in form. In a season, that can happen. We've reacted well. And the fact players like Lisandro have started scoring again, that gives confidence to everyone." That elusive commodity will have been in greater supply in the Brest squad this week following their 2-0 triumph at Girondins de Bordeaux last Sunday. 3 zone, which now lies five points behind them, as they registered only their second win of "When we're like that, when we run, battle, tackle for one another, football becomes easier. We were clever, and got the rub of the green for the opening goal. You've got to make your own luck and take advantage of it, especially as it hadn't particularly gone for us previously," said goalkeeper Alexis Thébaux, referring to Mario Licka's shot taking a huge deflection off Bordeaux full-back Benoît Trémoulinas for the opening goal. "Nobody has given up. We've only taken a little step forward. The victory will do us good, but it's not enough. We've got 12 games left, and they'll be 12 finals." - HISTORY - Olympique Lyonnais have won just once in seven league visits to Brest. Stade Brestois 29 have triumphed on four occasions at home to OL. - Lyon's only league win in Brest came with a 2-0 triumph on 23 September They have failed to win in the three league encounters between the pair in Brittany since (2D 1L). - LAST SEASON: The Week 3 meeting at the Stade Francis Le Blé ended 1-1 with Benoît Lesoimier (12') giving Brest the lead and Bafétimbi Gomis levelling (69'), eight minutes after Sidy Koné had been sent off. The return in Week 36 ended with the same scoreline. Yoann Gourcuff (37') opened the scoring for OL while Grégory Lorenzi (75') equalised. - The draw at Stade Municipal de Gerland was Brest's second successive draw and part of a four-game unbeaten run (2W 2D) with which to finish the season and ensure their top-flight survival. - THIS SEASON: Gomis (57') scored the only goal of the game as OL won 1-0 in Week 9. - STADE BRESTOIS 29 - GENERAL: Brest come into in 14th place on 28 points (8W 4D 14L), five points above the bottom three. - At the same stage last season, Brest were 12th on 30 points, four points above the relegation zone. - Brest registered a 2-0 win at Girondins de Bordeaux last Sunday - Mario Licka's shot took a decisive deflection off Bordeaux defender Benoît Trémoulinas (19') to put the visitors in front and Ahmed Kantari scored from the penalty spot (83') after Ludovic Sané had been penalised for a foul on substitute Larsen Touré. - Their two-game unbeaten run was ended when they lost 3-0 at Breton neighbours FC Lorient in their Coupe de France Round of 16 tie on Wednesday. - Brest have picked up just four points from their last six L1 outings (1W 1D). Prior to winning at Bordeaux, their previous L1 triumph came at Evian-Thonon-Gaillard (0-2) in their first league game of Prior to drawing 1-1 with AC Ajaccio in Week 25, Brest had lost their previous four league games. - Landry Chauvin's side rose as high as eighth after Week 6, having been 18th after Week 1. They have spent four weeks in the top half, but have been in the bottom half of the table since drawing at home with Bordeaux in Week 8. - Brest have the most victories of any side in the bottom eight (8), but also share with bottom side AS Nancy-Lorraine the highest number of defeats in the division (14). - Only four teams have scored fewer goals than Brest (27), while they enjoy the joint-12th-best defensive record (36). - Their clean sheet at Bordeaux was only their second in 12 league outings. - Eden ben Basat, who joined Toulouse FC in January, scored nine league goals for Brest, and remains their top scorer this season. 4 - Alexis Thébaux is the only ever-present in the Brest squad, Abdoulwahid Sissoko has played in 25 games so far. - Brest were 14th in the Fair Play table coming into the weekend with 50 yellow cards and two dismissals this season. - Kantari was sent off for a second bookable offence in the 2-2 draw at Stade Rennais FC in Week 16. Sissoko was shown a straight red card 33 minutes into Brest's 3-0 home defeat to PSG in Week HOME FORM: Only four teams, including the bottom three coming into the weekend, have a worse home record than Brest, who have picked up 17 points (5W 2D 5L) so far this season. - Brest have failed to win any of their last six league home games, losing all but one. - Their last home triumph is their 3-0 defeat of SC Bastia in Week Only Bordeaux, Nancy (both 11) and Ajaccio (13) have scored fewer goals than Brest (14) at home this season. - The 14 goals they have conceded at home compares favourably with OL (12) and is better than Olympique de Marseille (15), Stade Rennais FC (15) and FC Lorient (18) and as good as OGC Nice (14). - Two of Benschop's goals have come at home, a team-high. - Their record after scoring the first goal at home reads: 4W 2D 1L. However, after coming off the bench against Bordeaux after recovering from calf injuries, Lesoimier and Bruno Grougi are in contention to start. Brahim Ferradj is unlikely to feature after limping off injured against Ajaccio. Bernard Mendy missed the Lorient cup tie for personal reasons, but should return. Johan Martial was left out of the squad to face both Lorient and Bordeaux for disciplinary reasons after arriving late for the pre-match team talk against Ajaccio, a game he had been due to start. - TRIVIA - Brest back-up goalkeeper Joan Hartock, who played in the French Cup defeat to Lorient in midweek, came through the OL youth academy, but never made a L1 appearance before joining Brest in summer Geoffrey Dernis spent three years ( ) at OL's arch-rivals, AS Saint-Etienne. - Lesoimier featured for the first time since sustaining a calf injury in Week 15 when he came off the bench against Bordeaux. - Brest president Michel Guyot last week said that he was "satisfied" with coach Landry Chauvin's work, but did not rule out "pulling the trigger five games" from the end of the season on the ex-fc Nantes boss if the club was struggling. - OLYMPIQUE LYONNAIS - GENERAL: Lyon came into in second place in the Ligue 1 table with 51 points from 26 games. They trailed leaders Paris Saint-Germain by three points and sat five points ahead of Marseille in third. - Lyon have won 15, drawn six and lost five of their games to date. They were unbeaten in their first six matches of the season. - At the same stage last season, OL were seventh on 40 points, seven behind third-placed LOSC Lille. - Garde's side sat seventh in the table after Week 1, but have not been lower than third since. They have spent a total of nine weeks in first place, but slipped back to second after drawing 0-0 at home with Evian TG FC on January OL won 3-1 at home to FC Lorient last Sunday. 5 Ghezzal (50') and Arnold Mvuemba (90+2'), with his first L1 goal for OL since joining from Lorient in January, gave the hosts the points. - OL have won their last two L1 games and are unbeaten in their last three outings in all competitions (2W 1D). They had lost their three fixtures in all competitions prior to that (2 in L1, 1 in the Europa League (see below)). - OL's 4-0 win at Bordeaux in Week 25 was the first time they had won an away Ligue 1 game by a four-goal margin since beating FC Sochaux-Montbéliard 4-0 on February 21, OL boast the second-most prolific attack in L1 with 46 goals this season, second only to Paris Saint-Germain (49). Their tally of 25 goals conceded is the fourth-best in the French top flight. - They have failed to score in four games, and have scored three goals or more on eight separate occasions, including last weekend. - Gomis has 12 league goals - only Paris Saint-Germain's Zlatan Ibrahimovic (22) and AS Saint-Etienne's Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (14) have struck more times. Lisandro Lopez has eight. Gomis has 17 in all competitions, Lisandro Gomis has scored 84 Ligue 1 goals in his career. Of all the players currently active in Ligue 1, only Lorient's Ludovic Giuly (85) has more to his name. Gomis has now reached double figures in seven consecutive seasons. - Only LOSC Lille's Dimitri Payet (10) and Mathieu Valbuena (8) of OM have more assists in L1 this season than Steed Malbranque (7). - Malbranque's last assist came in Week OL have conceded only nine goals in the first halves of games this season. - No Lyon player has started every game this season, although Maxime Gonalons has started 25 of the 26 games. Gomis (23 starts, two sub appearances) had appeared in every game up until last weekend when he was an unused substitute. - OL were tenth in the Fair Play table coming into Week 26. They have had 42 yellow cards and four reds. Dejan Lovren has been sent off three times: against Bastia in Week 11, versus Nice in Week 19, and again versus Ajaccio in Week 23. Mouhamadou Dabo saw red at Saint-Etienne (Wk 16). - AWAY FORM: OL have the third-best away record in the division, picking up 22 points on their travels (6W 4D 3L). - OL have won three and lost one of their last four away L1 games. - The win in Bordeaux on their last trip ended a run of back-to-back away defeats in all competitions. - Gomis has scored a team-high five times away from home this season. - OL have taken the lead away from home nine times, registering six wins, two draws and a defeat. In the four away games they have conceded the opening goal, they have picked up two points (2D 2L). -TROPHÉE DES CHAMPIONS: OL won the traditional curtain-raiser to the season, beating Montpellier 4-2 on penalties after a 2-2 draw at the Red Bull Arena, home of the New York Red Bulls, in Harrison, New Jersey. - COUPE DE LA LIGUE: As one of France's European representatives, last season's runners-up Lyon earned a bye directly through to the last 16, where they were beaten 3-1 at OGC Nice. - FRENCH CUP: Winners last season, OL's defence of the trophy ended at the first hurdle, as they suffered a shock defeat to SA Épinal of the third division Championnat National. Lyon lost 4-2 on penalties after the tie ended 3-3 after extra time. - EUROPA LEAGUE: Lyon were eliminated in the Round of 32, losing 3-2 on aggregate to Tottenham Hotspur of England. - After losing the first leg 2-1 in London, OL drew 1-1 in the return at the Stade de Gerland on 21 February. Now 33, he made his debut for Rennes at Bastia in February Mouhamadou Dabo will make his 150th Ligue 1 appearance if he plays. Mvuemba reached that landmark in Bordeaux. - Jimmy Briand has made 249 Ligue 1 appearances and has scored 49 goals. - Garde said this week he still counted on Briand, despite the former Rennes forward not being used in 2013 following an aborted loan move to AS Monaco in January. - Sports daily L'Equipe recently published a report of French football's financial watchdog, the DNCG, which showed OL have the biggest deficit of any Ligue 1 side at 28 million euros. Stade Brestois 29 - Brest finished 15th in Ligue 1 last season, their second top flight season after winning promotion to the top flight with a second-placed finish in Ligue 2 in season They had 41 points and were three points clear of the relegation zone. - They had finished 16th in for their first season back in the top flight since In Brest reached the round of 64 of the French Cup, where they were eliminated by Niort (National, D3). They were knocked out of the Coupe de la Ligue in the round of 32, going down 3-2 to Caen. - Bruno Grougi was club top scorer in with nine Ligue 1 goals. - Featuring the likes of David Ginola and Stéphane Guivarc'h, the club finished 11th in 1991 but were relegated on financial grounds. Olympique Lyonnais - Last season Lyon finished fourth in Ligue 1 with 64 points - ten points behind third-placed Lille - and will not feature in the Champions League after 13 straight seasons of having qualified for Europe's premier continental club competition. - In OL did at least put an end to their trophy drought as they won the Coupe de France beating amateur club Quevilly (National, D3) 1-0 at the Stade de France.
