2 PREVIEW : VALENCIENNES FC - PARIS SAINT-GERMAIN Feature Preview Paris Saint-Germain had been written out of title contention just days ago, but now they travel to Valenciennes knowing a win will take them back to the top of the Ligue 1 table before Montpellier play on Monday. The French presidential race is now down to just two candidates, but on the weekend in which the nation decides between François Hollande and Nicolas Sarkozy, there are still three names in the running to win the Ligue 1 crown. Montpellier still have their destiny in their own hands, but the tension appears to be getting to them after their midweek draw with Evian-Thonon-Gaillard. Third-placed Lille may be five points off the pace, but they are the form team and still have to go to Montpellier. Meanwhile, PSG have endured a week of contrasting emotions, from appearing to be out of the running after their defeat at Lille last Sunday to moving right back into contention following their 2-0 home win against Saint-Etienne on Wednesday. The capital club now trail Montpellier by three points and while their goal difference is inferior by one, they have scored three more goals than the leaders. It is incredibly tight, but Paris will go provisionally top with a win at the Stade du Hainaut. "After Montpellier's slip-up, we needed to get the points, even more so to make sure that Lille didn't catch up with us," said defender Sylvain Armand in the wake of the win against Saint-Etienne, in which Nenê netted his 17th goal of the season from the penalty spot before Javier Pastore wrapped up the win. "Everything is still possible, we still believe. We need to go into the Valenciennes match in the best possible mindset, build on the victory against Saint-Etienne and win there if we want to remain in the running into the final two games. We have played all our trump cards. It is up to us to do the work." The win against Les Verts was just PSG's third in their last eight league outings and was also the first time they had kept a clean sheet in their last 12 league games. The form book suggests that Carlo Ancelotti's side will drop more points, and they can expect a tough test in what will be their first visit to Valenciennes' new home. PSG lost just once in their last eight visits to the northern side's old Stade Nungesser, and won 2-1 when the teams met at the Parc des Princes back in August, but Daniel Sanchez's side have been strong on home turf this season, losing just four times in 17 games. Montpellier, Lyon and Rennes have lost at the Stade du Hainaut this season, while Lille managed just a draw in the league and lost there in the Coupe de France. Like Paris, Valenciennes have had a mixed week, with a precious 2-0 home victory against Nice being followed by a 4-1 defeat at Lyon on Wednesday. They lie 12th in the table, six points clear of the relegation zone, and so still need one win to be absolutely sure of their Ligue 1 place for next season. "It was severe," said Sanchez of the loss in Lyon, where the visitors went in level at half-time only to concede three goals in the final quarter of the match. "We caused them problems and had great chances to go 2-1 up. It is always the same problem for us, we failed to take our chances. But there were lots of positives, and the score-line does not reflect the way the game went. Now we need to forget Lyon because we have a big game at home against PSG, and we need to go looking for a result. It will not be the easiest of games, but it is an exceptional match and a prestigious occasion. We have performed well against the top teams before this season and we need to do it again." Valenciennes welcome back Carlos Sanchez, who has completed a nine-match ban handed down for injuring the ankle of Saint-Etienne's Fabien Lemoîne on March 10. Nicolas Penneteau and José Saez are slight doubts after picking up knocks in midweek. Grégory Pujol (adductors), Benjamin Brou Angoua (ankle), Jean-Louis Leca and Kenny Lala (both knee) are on the injury list. 3 -HISTORY: This will be Paris Saint-Germain's first visit to Valenciennes' new Stade du Hainaut home. In top-flight meetings at the old Stade Nungesser, VA won four, PSG won three and there were six draws. -PSG have lost just once in their last eight visits to Valenciennes in all competitions. That was a 2-1 loss in May 2009 when Johan Audel and Grégory Pujol scored for the home side after Mateja Kezman had given Paris the lead. -PSG went to Valenciennes twice last season, winning 3-1 in the Coupe de la Ligue quarter-finals before a 2-1 win in Week 17 of the Ligue 1 campaign. Nenê (47', 84') scored both goals for the visitors either side of a Vincent Aboubakar (82') strike for the hosts. -Earlier this season, PSG beat Valenciennes 2-1 at the Parc des Princes on August 21 (Wk 3). Kévin Gameiro (39') and Nenê (pen 64') scored either side of an equaliser from Rémi Gomis (45+1'). -VALENCIENNES FC -GENERAL: Valenciennes come into Week 36 in 12th place on 40 points. They are six points clear of the relegation zone and four points adrift of Marseille in tenth. -VA have won 11, drawn seven and lost 17 of their games to date. They have lost three of their last four matches. Their longest unbeaten run was a five-game stretch in February and March (six in all competitions). Only Sochaux (18) and Dijon (19) have suffered more defeats. -Daniel Sanchez's side failed to win any of their first five league games and won just one of their opening nine matches. -VA have been in the relegation zone after seven weeks of this campaign, including from Weeks 3-6. They have been permanent members of the bottom half, apart from after Weeks 24 and 25, when they climbed to tenth. They have not been lower than 13th since the beginning of February. -At the same stage last season, Valenciennes sat 13th with 43 points, four points clear of the relegation zone. They had won only nine of their 35 games, however. -In midweek, Valenciennes were beaten 4-1 at Olympique Lyonnais. Lisandro López (35', 72'), Cris (69') and Jimmy Briand (88') netted for OL with Renaud Cohade replying for VA with a 38th-minute penalty. -The Valenciennes line-up against Lyon: Penneteau; Ducourtioux (c), Isimat-Mirin, Gil, Bong (Traoré, 70'); Cohade (Gomis, 60'); Saez (Mater, 77'), Camara; Dossevi, Samassa, Djuric -VA have scored just 34 goals in their 35 games. Only Brest (28) have scored fewer. The 4-0 win against Dijon (Wk 6) and the 3-0 defeat of Sochaux (Wk 10) are the only games this season in which they have scored more than twice, while they have failed to score at all in 11 matches. -Gaël Danic is the side's leading scorer with six league goals, and seven in all competitions. Renaud Cohade has five, while Mamadou Samassa, Foued Kadir and Vincent Aboubakar have four league goals. Aboubakar and Kadir have six in all competitions. -Before this season, Cohade had scored only four Ligue 1 goals in his entire career. -Cohade is the team's leading assist provider with four, ahead of Kadir, who has three. -VA have scored 23 of their 34 league goals in the second half of games. -Sanchez's men have let in 44 goals, giving them the joint 12th-best defence. They have kept 11 clean sheets. They have conceded three goals or more on just four occasions this season, including in three of their last eight games. Wednesday's 4-1 reverse in Lyon was one such occasion. -Goalkeeper Nicolas Penneteau is the only remaining ever-present in the squad. Renaud Cohade has played the most of any outfield player (31 starts, one sub appearance), followed by Nicolas Isimat-Mirin (30 starts, two sub appearances) and Gaël Danic (30 starts, one sub app). -Mamadou Samassa is VA's most frequently used substitute this season, having appeared 21 times from the bench. 4 -Dusan Djuric made his first Ligue 1 start in the defeat at Lyon. He had also started the Coupe de France Round-of-16 win against Lille. -Valenciennes are seventh in the Fair Play table. They have had four red cards this season: Nicolas Isimat-Mirin (v Evian, Wk 16 and v Bordeaux, Wk 20), Carlos Sánchez (v Saint-Etienne, Wk 27) and Rémi Gomis (v Nancy, Wk 7). -HOME FORM: Valenciennes are sixth in the table based on home form. They have won ten, drawn three and lost four of their 17 home games to date, collecting 33 points. -VA are one of only six sides to post double figures in terms of home wins this season. -They have scored 23 goals and conceded just 11 at the Stade du Hainaut. Only Toulouse have let in fewer goals at home this season. VA have kept 11 clean sheets at home. -Home defeats have come against Bordeaux (1-2, Wk 4), Ajaccio (1-2, Wk 21), Saint-Etienne (1-2, Wk 27) and Evian-Thonon-Gaillard (0-3, Wk 32). -Daniel Sanchez's side have won three of their last four home games. -Their average gate of 15,127 is the 13th-highest in the division. Their biggest gate to date is 21,622 against Marseille (Wk 8) while their lowest is 11,657 against Nancy (Wk 23). -COUPE DE LA LIGUE: Valenciennes were knocked out at the first hurdle, losing 3-2 at Dijon in the Round of 32. -COUPE DE FRANCE: Valenciennes beat Le Mans (2-0 away), Bastia (3-1) and holders Lille (2-1) before succumbing to Rennes in the quarter-finals in March, losing 3-1 at the Stade du Hainaut. -TRANSFERS: Valenciennes made three signings in January, with Swedish international midfielder Dusan Djuric signing from FC Zürich on a three-and-a-half year deal and Senegal-born midfielder Pape Abdou Camara arriving from Standard Liège for three-and-a-half years. They also signed Burkinabé teenager Abdoul Aziz Kaboré from Kada School in his homeland. -TEAM NEWS: SUSPENSIONS: Carlos Sanchez is available again after serving a nine-match ban for injuring the ankle of Saint-Etienne's Fabien Lemoîne on March 10. -INJURIES: Nicolas Penneteau is a worry after taking a blow to the chest against Lyon. José Saez (calf) is also a slight doubt. Grégory Pujol (adductors) is out having not played in almost two months, while Jean-Louis Leca and Kenny Lala continue to recover from long-term knee injuries. Benjamin Brou Angoua has an ankle injury. -PARIS SAINT-GERMAIN -GENERAL: PSG are second in Ligue 1 with 70 points from 35 games. They are three points behind leaders Montpellier, and two points ahead of Lille in third. They still need two points to guarantee a top-three finish and Champions League qualification for next season. -Paris have been permanent fixtures in the top five since winning 3-1 at Toulouse in Week 4. They went top for the first time after winning 3-0 at Montpellier in Week 8 and have led after a total of 16 weeks this season. They have been second since drawing 1-1 at home to Bordeaux on March 25. -Carlo Ancelotti's men have won 20, drawn ten and lost five of their games to date. Their tally of league wins is their highest since 2003/04, when they won 22 games and finished as runners-up behind Lyon. -PSG have lost just twice in 16 league games under Ancelotti, and just twice in 20 games since a 3-0 loss at Marseille on November 27. -However, the capital club's recent form is not brilliant. They have won three, drawn three and lost two of their last eight outings and are only eighth in the form table in that time. -After 35 games last season, Paris were fourth with 58 points, 11 points behind leaders Lille. They have already got ten points more than their total tally for last season of 60. -On Wednesday, PSG beat Saint-Etienne 2-0 at the Parc des Princes. 5 -The PSG line-up against Saint-Etienne: Sirigu; Jallet, Alex, Camara, Armand; Bodmer (Sissoko, 65'), Motta, Maxwell (Matuidi, 74'); Ménez, Nenê (Hoarau, 80'); Pastore. -Ancelotti's side have the best attack in Ligue 1, having scored 66 goals in their 35 league games so far. That is one more than Lille. -They have scored three goals or more on ten separate occasions, while they have failed to score in five league games this season. The 0-0 draw at Nice on February 12 is the only game in 20 in all competitions under Ancelotti in which they have failed to score. -The recent 6-1 hammering of Sochaux was the first time any team had scored six in a Ligue 1 game since Rennes won 6-2 at Sochaux on September 21 and the first time PSG had scored six since beating Montpellier 6-1 in February Nenê is the team's leading scorer in the league with 17 goals. Nenê has 23 in all competitions, while Javier Pastore has 12 in the league and 15 in all competitions. Kévin Gameiro has 11 in the league and 14 in all competitions. -Pastore is the only player in Ligue 1 to have scored in each of the last three matchdays. -Nenê has scored four goals in his last three appearances against Valenciennes. -Only Montpellier's Olivier Giroud (21) had scored more Ligue 1 goals than Nenê coming into the weekend, although Lille's Eden Hazard has also netted 17. All bar two of Nenê's league goals have been scored at the Parc des Princes, with the exceptions being his penalty at Lyon in Week 25 and his goal at Auxerre in Week 32. In total, eight of his league goals have come from the penalty spot. -Jérémy Menez has provided ten assists this season, the most in Ligue 1 after Eden Hazard (14) and Marseille's Mathieu Valbuena (12). Nenê has laid on seven goals in the league. -Paris have conceded 37 goals in their 35 games to date. Only Toulouse (31) and Montpellier (33) had let in fewer goals coming into the weekend, although Bordeaux, Lille and Brest had also conceded 37. -They have kept ten clean sheets so far, although Wednesday's against Saint-Etienne was their first in 12 games. Their 3-0 defeat at Marseille in Week 15 and February's 4-4 draw at Lyon are the only times this season in which they have conceded more than twice in a game. -Salvatore Sirigu is the only PSG player to have played every minute of every league game this season. Nenê has started 32 league games while Kévin Gameiro has also appeared in 32 league games (26 starts, six sub appearances).jérémy Menez has started 31 league games. -Sylvain Armand and Guillaume Hoarau have made 11 substitute appearances this season, the same number as Mevlut Erding before he left for Rennes in January. -Jérémy Menez has completed 62 dribbles this season, compared to 49 for Nenê and 45 for Javier Pastore. -Kévin Gameiro has touched the ball more times in the opposition penalty area (150) than any other PSG player this season. He is followed by Jérémy Menez (143) and Javier Pastore (142). -Nenê has been fouled more times (112) than any other PSG player this season. He is followed by Jérémy Menez (80) and Blaise Matuidi (40). -PSG are 12th in Ligue 1's Fair Play table. They have had four red cards in league games this season: Christophe Jallet (v Nice, Wk 7), Mohamed Sissoko (v Dijon, Wk 27 and v Marseille, Wk 31) and Mamadou Sakho (v Lille, Wk 34). -AWAY FORM: PSG lie second in the table based on away form. They have won seven, drawn seven and lost three of their 17 away games to date, collecting 28 points. Only Lille (33) have taken more points on their travels, although Rennes have also taken 28 points on the road. -PSG's away defeats have come at Marseille (3-0, Wk 15), Nancy (2-1, Wk 30) and Lille (2-1, Wk 34) They have won just one of their last seven on their travels and just two in eight away league games under Carlo Ancelotti. -Paris have scored 27 goals on their travels, giving them the best away attack in Ligue 1 alongside Montpellier. 6 -EUROPA LEAGUE: Paris were eliminated after the group stage, finishing third in Group F behind Athletic Bilbao and Red Bull Salzburg. They ended level on ten points with the Austrians, but Salzburg edged through thanks to their head-to-head record - PSG beat them 3-1 at home, and then lost 2-0 in Austria. -COUPE DE LA LIGUE: PSG were knocked out in the last 16, losing 3-2 at Dijon despite having led COUPE DE FRANCE: Runners-up last season and winners in 2010, PSG were knocked out in the quarter-finals this time around, losing 3-1 at home to Lyon. -They had previously beaten amateur sides Locminé (2-1) in the Round of 64 and Sablé FC (4-0) in the Round of 32, as well as Dijon (1-0) in the Round of 16, all away from home. -TRANSFERS: Paris signed Brazilian-born Italian international midfielder Thiago Motta from Internazionale on a three-and-a-half-year deal on transfer deadline day, after also recruiting Brazilian stopper Alex from Chelsea in January on a two-and-a-half-year deal. -Earlier, Maxwell signed from Barcelona on a three-and-a-half year deal during the January transfer window. In addition, 37-year-old goalkeeper Ronan Le Crom, who had been a free agent since leaving Nancy last summer but had been training at PSG, signed on a deal until the end of the season. -Turkey striker Mevlut Erding - who had not started any league games but did have one goal - was sold to Rennes, while 19-year-old full-back Loïck Landre was loaned to Clermont. -TEAM NEWS: SUSPENSIONS: Mamadou Sakho is available again after serving a one-match ban against Saint-Etienne. Thiago Motta can play before serving a one-match ban next weekend against Rennes. -INJURIES: Milan Bisevac will miss the game with a thigh injury picked up last weekend at Lille. Clément Chantôme returned to the squad against Saint-Etienne following a spell on the sidelines with a thigh injury. Marcos Ceará has missed the last three games with a thigh problem. -TRIVIA: Nenê is one of four players nominated for France's Player of the Year award along with Montpellier duo Olivier Giroud and Younès Belhanda and Lille's Eden Hazard. -Salvatore Sirigu has been nominated for the prize of Ligue 1 goalkeeper of the year along with Benoît Costil (Rennes), Hugo Lloris (Lyon) and Steve Mandanda (Marseille). -Former PSG coach Antoine Kombouaré is nominated for the prize of Ligue 1 coach of the year alongside René Girard (Montpellier), Rudi Garcia (Lille) and Olivier Pantaloni (Ajaccio). When Kombouaré left, PSG were top of the table with 40 points after 19 games, three points clear of Montpellier. Before joining PSG in 2009, Kombouaré enjoyed four successful seasons in charge of Valenciennes, taking them into Ligue 1 in his first season and consolidating their position in the top flight. -Valenciennes assistant coach Philippe Burle is leaving the club to take over as coach of Oman's national Olympic team. Oman's national coach is Paul Le Guen, who coached PSG before Kombouaré. -Benjamin Brou Angoua and Siaka Tiéné are teammates at international level with the Côte d'ivoire. -Tiéné joined PSG in August 2010 from Valenciennes, for whom he scored twice in 57 Ligue 1 appearances over two seasons. -Milan Bisevac joined PSG from Valenciennes last summer after scoring four goals in 100 Ligue 1 appearances in three seasons with VA. -Sylvain Armand and Grégory Pujol were teammates at Nantes before the former left for PSG in Mamadou Samassa celebrated his 26th birthday on Tuesday, May 1.
