2 PREVIEW : AS MONACO FC - AS SAINT-ETIENNE Feature Preview While all eyes are focused on Sunday's Classique, Ligue 1 leaders AS Monaco have a chance to cement their position at the top of the table by beating AS Saint-Etienne at the Stade Louis II on Saturday. The margins are fine at the top just now, with Monaco leading defending champions Paris Saint-Germain by a difference of just two goals while Olympique de Marseille lie a point back in third. Therefore, barring a big winning margin for PSG at the Stade Vélodrome, the principality club will be sure of ending in first place if they can get the better of Les Verts. Claudio Ranieri's side were fancied to make a big impression this season, but the Ligue 2 champions have exceeded even their own expectations in the opening weeks of the campaign. They were perhaps lucky to come away with a point from a 1-1 draw in Reims last weekend, with João Moutinho's first goal in Ligue 1 hauling them level after Antoine Devaux struck at the other end. However, in terms of points gleaned, this is their best start to a top-flight season in a decade, and they remain unbeaten despite already having faced PSG and Marseille away from home. Ranieri's side has had a settled look to it, and even 45 million-euro summer signing James Rodríguez has had to wait patiently for his chance on the bench in recent weeks. The coach has admitted that the Colombian winger needs to improve the defensive side of his game but a thigh injury picked up by six-goal Emmanuel Rivière may have opened the door for him to return to the starting line-up. If former Saint-Etienne man Rivière does not start, Monaco should line-up in a formation, with Radamel Falcao, Ligue 1's leading scorer with seven goals to his name, playing as a lone striker. Jérémy Toulalan will again miss out while there was a doubt surrounding left-back Layvin Kurzawa but, whoever plays, Ranieri has warned his team to beware of opponents he rates highly. "Against a Saint-Etienne side that use the ball well, with very technical players, we will need to be very compact," said the Italian. "Saint-Etienne are a direct rival. I think they will fight for the top spots right to the end of the season." Despite those words of praise, Les Verts came into the weekend in seventh place in the table, five points behind the leaders, having picked up just one point from their last three outings. Back-to-back defeats against Toulouse and Marseille were followed by a 2-2 draw at home against SC Bastia last time out, as Christophe Galtier's men threw away a two-goal lead in the dying stages at the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard. It has been an inconsistent start to the campaign for a team who were outstanding on their way to finishing fifth and winning the Coupe de la Ligue in , but Galtier will be hoping they can shore up their defence and continue an impressive recent record in this fixture which has seen Saint-Etienne go unbeaten through their last five visits to the principality. "We have conceded six goals in those (last three) games, which is far too many," said Galtier. "We need to be much more focused at the back. We are losing the ball too quickly. "Falcao is an international-class striker, Emmanuel Rivière is full of confidence. They are both very lively inside the penalty area and benefit from the vision of Moutinho and the impact of their wingers, but we need to believe in our chances. We must go to Monaco without fear and without complexes." 3 -HISTORY: Monaco have played host to Saint-Etienne on 44 previous occasions in the top flight, winning 17, drawing 14 and losing 13. -Monaco have scored 60 goals in this fixture to Saint-Etienne's 54. -The last meeting of the clubs at the Stade Louis II ended in a 2-0 Saint-Etienne win in December Laurent Batlles (20') and Bakary Sako (78') scored the goals for Les Verts in front of a crowd of 6,694. They have met in Saint-Etienne since then, drawing 1-1 on May 1, 2011, with Dimitri Payet (11') scoring for the hosts and Georgie Welcome (30') on target for ASM. -Monaco have not won any of their last five home meetings with Sainté and just one of their last seven. That success came in November 2005, Camel Meriem securing a 1-0 victory. Since then, Saint-Etienne have recorded three wins and two draws in the principality. -The biggest winning scoreline in this fixture is 3-0, a result that both teams have recorded. The highest-scoring encounter of the clubs at the Stade Louis II remains a 5-3 Monaco win in April 2001, when Ludovic Giuly scored twice for the home side. -AS MONACO FC -GENERAL: Monaco came into on top of the table with 18 points from eight games. They are unbeaten, with five wins and three draws to their name, and lead Paris Saint-Germain on goal difference, while Marseille sit a point back in third. -At the same stage of their last Ligue 1 campaign, in , Monaco sat 15th with just one win and eight points. The last time Monaco were top of the table eight games into a season was in , when they had 17 points and lay a point clear of Lille. They ended that campaign in third place. -This is Monaco's best start to a season since , when they led the table with 19 points after eight games, a point clear of Marseille in second. They have not been unbeaten eight matches into a season since , when they also won five and drew three of their first eight games and sat second in the table, two points behind Saint-Etienne. At a LFP Disciplinary Commission meeting on Thursday, Yannick Ferreira Carrasco avoided further sanction beyond the yellow card received at the time after a clash with Lamine Koné in the Week 5 win over FC Lorient. -INJURIES: Jérémy Toulalan (adductors) is out and both Kayvin Kurzawa (back) and Emmanuel Rivière (thigh) were due to face fitness tests on Friday. Nabil Dirar is still missing although he has started running again for the first time since undergoing knee surgery. -AS SAINT-ETIENNE -GENERAL: Saint-Etienne came into in seventh place in Ligue 1 with 13 points from eight games. They trail leaders Monaco by five points and lie a point behind LOSC Lille in fourth. -After eight games last season, Saint-Etienne were ninth with 11 points. 5 -They won four of their first five games, something they had not managed since , a campaign in which they finished third. Les Verts won their opening two matches of the campaign, just as they did in They had not won their opening two games without conceding a goal since Last weekend, Christophe Galtier's side drew 2-2 with SC Bastia at the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard. Franck Tabanou (27') and Ismaël Diomandé (57') had them in control only for Gianni Bruno (85') and François-Joseph Modesto (90+4') to rescue a point for the Corsicans in front of a crowd of 31,952. -The Saint-Etienne line-up against Bastia: Ruffier; Clerc (c), Sall, Zouma, Ghoulam; Lemoine, Diomandé (Clement, 84'), Cohade; Hamouma, Erding (Sissoko, 87'), Tabanou (Mollo, 74'). -Saint-Etienne have scored 11 league goals so far this season. Only Monaco, Marseille, Lyon and Paris Saint-Germain had scored more coming into the weekend. Romain Hamouma is their top scorer with three goals, while Benjamin Corgnet has scored twice. Hamouma has also provided two assists in Ligue 1. -Last season, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (19) and Brandão (11) provided exactly half of the team's total tally of 60 goals. -The win against Valenciennes in Week 5 was the fourth time in all competitions this season in which Sainté have scored three goals, although it was the first time they had done so in a domestic game. They have failed to score at all in just one Ligue 1 match. -Les Verts have conceded nine goals, giving them the joint ninth-best defence. They have kept two clean sheets, in their opening two matches. -They conceded just 32 goals in total last season, with only PSG (23) letting in fewer. They kept 17 clean sheets, while their 3-1 defeat at Lorient in Week 36 was the only game in which they conceded more than twice. -Stéphane Ruffier and François Clerc are the only Saint-Etienne players to have started all eight Ligue 1 games to date. Fabien Lemoine, Romain Hamouma, Jérémy Clément (all seven starts, one substitute appearance) and Renaud Cohade (6/2) have all appeared in every game. -Cohade has played in 65 consecutive Ligue 1 games, 19 of those coming with his previous club Valenciennes. -Jérémy Clément's next start will be his 200th in Ligue 1.
