2 PREVIEW : GIRONDINS DE BORDEAUX - PARIS SAINT-GERMAIN Feature Preview Laurent Blanc will be in the away dugout on Friday as he takes his new side Paris Saint-Germain to the Stade Chaban-Delmas to face Girondins de Bordeaux, the club with whom he made his name as a coach. Blanc enjoyed a successful three-year stint in charge of the south-western outfit, winning the Ligue 1 title and the Coupe de la Ligue in 2009 and reaching the Champions League quarter-finals in 2010 before leaving to become France coach. That spell also featured a comprehensive 4-0 Bordeaux win against PSG on their run to the title in January 2009, and the capital club's record in this fixture down the years has been poor. Indeed, they had won just once in 22 visits before a 1-0 victory in last season's corresponding fixture in January. That result, secured thanks to a Zlatan Ibrahimovic strike just before half-time, took PSG to the top of the Ligue 1 table, and they stayed there for the remainder of the season. Now Blanc returns to Bordeaux in charge of the defending champions, who will be looking to continue their unbeaten start to the campaign in the knowledge that a win will take them provisionally to the top of the table before the rest of the weekend's games. "Bordeaux is a city I really like. The people there are quite reserved, like me. I like that mentality. I had three great years there and only have happy memories. It is a pleasure to go back to Bordeaux," Le Président said when asked what this fixture meant to him. It may be an occasion for the former France defender to savour, but it is also shaping up to be an awkward match for the champions, coming as it does straight after a busy week for their myriad international stars, and at the beginning of a daunting run of seven games in 23 days that will also feature meetings with Monaco, Marseille and Benfica. Next Tuesday, PSG begin their Champions League campaign with a trip to Greece to face Olympiacos, and Blanc has decisions to make regarding the fitness of those who have been away playing for their countries. Most have been named in the squad, although Ezequiel Lavezzi, who played for Argentina in Paraguay on Tuesday, has been ommitted along with Jérémy Menez, who is suffering from kidney stones. "With this run of matches, we are obliged to rotate the squad," said Blanc. "That is why we have the squad we do. We need to look at the physical condition of all those who have been on international duty, because some had still not come back by Thursday afternoon. (Edinson) Cavani will only return on Friday. It is obviously not the best way to prepare for this match, but we must get on with it. Some of those who have hardly played up until now will get their chance from the start." That may include young Brazilian defender Marquinhos, an expensive summer signing from Roma whose debut has been delayed by injury. He is in the squad this weekend, though, as PSG prepare to face a Bordeaux side who have had a rather slow start to the season. "They have quality going forward, with players I know well," said Blanc. "We are going there to win and, to do that, we will need to have the ball." This will not be the first meeting of the teams this season. The Ligue 1 champions and the Coupe de France holders met in the Trophée des Champions in Gabon last month, with Paris coming from behind to win thanks to late goals by Hervin Ongenda and Alex. Francis Gillot's side have gone on to take just four points from their opening four league games, losing 2-0 at home to Monaco on the opening day and then going down 2-1 at Saint-Etienne in their last outing before the international break. "Even the two weeks that have passed since then have not erased that game from our minds," said Gillot, who hopes his team can raise their game against the capital giants. "When we are up against it, when we play with an element of fear, I think we are better. That's human nature. We are afraid of Paris because they are a big team." This will be Bordeaux's first game since captain Jaroslav Plasil left to join Italian side Catania on loan for the remainder of the season, but Argentine full-back Lucas Orban could make his first appearance since signing from Tigre in the summer. 09/12/2013 Ligue de Football Professionnel / Ligue1.com 2

3 -HISTORY: There have been 39 previous meetings of Bordeaux and Paris Saint-Germain in the Gironde in the top flight, with Bordeaux winning 23, PSG just seven and the remaining nine encounters ending in draws. -Bordeaux have scored 66 goals in this fixture to PSG's 27. -PSG won 1-0 in last season's corresponding fixture on January 20, Zlatan Ibrahimovic (43') scoring the only goal of the game. That Week 21 victory took PSG back to the top of the Ligue 1 table and they stayed there for the remainder of the season. -Prior to that game, Bordeaux had been unbeaten in their last six home meetings with PSG. They have lost just two of their last 23 encounters with the capital club at the Stade Chaban-Delmas. -PSG's only other win in Bordeaux since 1988 dates back to November 2005, when Mario Yepes and Pedro Pauleta netted in a 2-0 victory. -The other meeting between the clubs last season ended in a 0-0 draw at the Parc des Princes in Week 3. -Bordeaux's biggest win in this fixture remains a 4-0 success in January 2009, when Souleymane Diawara, Fernando Cavenaghi, Yoann Gourcuff and Fernando all scored. PSG's biggest victory here remains a 3-1 triumph in April GIRONDINS DE BORDEAUX -GENERAL: Bordeaux come into Week 5 in 15th place in Ligue 1 with four points from four games. They are just two points clear of bottom club Toulouse but lie just three points adrift of Rennes in fifth. -This time last season Bordeaux were fourth in the table with eight points. They lay four points behind leaders Olympique de Marseille. -Bordeaux have not been as low as 15th after four games at any point since the return to a top flight of 20 teams in In their last outing, Bordeaux lost 2-1 at AS Saint-Etienne in front of 26,091 at the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard. Romain Hamouma (7') and Loïc Perrin (50') netted for the hosts before Ludovic Obraniak (90') pulled a goal back. -The Bordeaux line-up against Saint-Etienne: Carrasso; Mariano (Faubert, 46'), Henrique, Sané, Poundjé; Biyogo Poko (Sacko, 88'), Plasil (c); Obraniak, Saivet, Maurice-Belay (Jussiê, 46'); Diabaté. -Bordeaux have scored just three goals so far this season, making them one of eight teams to average less than a goal a game so far. -Before Obraniak's goal at Saint-Etienne, Henri Saivet (4) and Cheick Diabaté (7) had scored 11 of Bordeaux's previous 13 goals in all competitions, and all of the team's previous six Ligue 1 goals. -Les Girondins have conceded five goals so far this season. They have won two and drawn two of their games to date and lie two points behind leaders Monaco. A win will leave them provisionally top of the table. -This time last season, PSG were eighth with six points, six points behind leaders Marseille. -In their last outing, PSG beat Guingamp 2-0 at the Parc des Princes with late goals by Adrien Rabiot (90+1') and Zlatan Ibrahimovic (90+3'). Only Monaco, Lyon and Marseille have scored more. Edinson Cavani is their top scorer with two goals. -PSG have conceded three goals and kept one clean sheet. They had the meanest defence in Ligue 1 last season, letting in just 23 goals. He also captained his side to a 2-1 win in the Republic of Ireland last weekend. -Thiago Motta came off the bench, and Marco Verratti and Salvatore Sirigu were unused substitutes, as Italy beat the Czech Republic 2-1 on Tuesday to clinch their place at next year's World Cup finals in Brazil. Motta had started last Friday's 1-0 win against Bulgaria in Palermo. -Edinson Cavani started for Uruguay in their South American World Cup qualifying wins in Peru and at home to Colombia. He scored his team's first goal in the 2-0 defeat of Colombia in Montevideo. -Ezequiel Lavezzi played 25 minutes as a substitute as Argentina won 5-2 in Paraguay to clinch World Cup qualification. -Thiago Silva started, and Maxwell and Lucas came off the bench, as Brazil beat Australia 6-0 in a friendly in Brasilia last weekend. Girondins de Bordeaux - Bordeaux are in their 61st L1 campaign making them the joint-third-longest serving member of the French elite along with AS Saint-Etienne. Only Sochaux (66) and OM (64) have featured in more top-flight campaigns. - Originally established as a shooting and gymnastics club in 1881, Les Girondins did not have a football section until They have been French champions six times (1950, '84, '85, '87, '99, 2009) and runners-up on nine occasions. - Bordeaux have won four Coupes de France (1941, '86, '87, 2013, winning 3-2 against Evian in May 2013 with Cheick Diabaté scoring the match-winner - his second goal of the final - a minute from time. 7 - The club's 34,000 capacity stadium, the Stade Jacques Chaban-Delmas, was in 2001 named after the man who was Bordeaux's mayor between 1947 and Bordeaux finished seventh after the campaign, losing just nine games - only three more than when they won the title in but drawing 16. Paris Saint-Germain - Promoted to the French first division for the first time in their present guise in 1974, PSG are taking part in their 40th consecutive top-flight season. - PSG's title triumph was the third in their history, following previous successes in 1986 and The club have also won eight Coupes de France (1982, '83, '93, '95, '98, 2004, '06, '10) and three Coupes de la Ligue (1995, '98, 2008).
