2 PREVIEW : FC NANTES - PARIS SAINT-GERMAIN Feature Preview After another slow start to the season which has seen them lose early ground on the teams expected to run them closest in the title race, Paris Saint-Germain know the importance of registering their first victory when they face promoted FC Nantes at a sold-out Stade de la Beaujoire on Sunday night. For the third consecutive season, PSG have failed to win either of their opening two matches, with a 1-1 draw at Montpellier on the opening day being followed by last weekend's remarkable stalemate with Ajaccio at the Parc des Princes, when the champions needed a late Edinson Cavani strike just to salvage a point despite mustering 38 shots on goal. Of course, last year, under Carlo Ancelotti, PSG drew their opening three games before going on to win the title by a 12-point margin, so there is no need to panic at this stage. However, the strength of the opposition appears greater this year, and Laurent Blanc's side can ill afford to lose more ground on their rivals after coming into the weekend four points adrift of Lyon, Monaco, Marseille and Saint-Etienne. "It is not the start to the season we were expecting. We hoped to have more points, but we will keep preparing," said Blanc after the Ajaccio draw, in which PSG were denied time and again by the Corsican's inspired goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa. "We have no reason to reproach ourselves, but we have started the season badly, just like every year," added Paris 'keeper Salvatore Sirigu, who was a spectator for most of last week's game. "And we keep hitting the bar, the post...we have two points - that is the reality. We need to bounce back." The reigning champions' next two games would appear to provide the perfect opportunity to really kick-start their campaign, with both coming against promoted sides. Guingamp travel to the Parc des Princes next week, but first Nantes, who were third in Ligue 2 last season, are the opposition. Les Canaris are one of the great names of French football, having been champions eight times and three times winners of the Coupe de France. They are back in Ligue 1 after an absence of four seasons and the degree of fervour in the city on the banks of the Loire is clear from the fact that every ticket for this game was sold by Tuesday. A crowd of 37,000 will watch the first meeting of the clubs since February 2009, when Ludovic Giuly scored twice in a 4-1 PSG win, but few will expect anything other than another away victory. Indeed, while renowned for their 'jeu à la nantaise' in years gone by, Nantes are bracing themselves for a relegation scrap this season. Michel Der Zakarian's side beat SC Bastia 2-0 at home on the opening day but have been accused of fielding an ineligible player in substitute Abdoulaye Touré and so risk forfeiting the points won in that game. Last weekend, they led away to Lorient before going on to lose 2-1 and life will not get any easier against PSG, who were highly impressive on their travels last season, losing just three times, and are unbeaten in their last 13 Ligue 1 games altogether. "We have our values and quality players," argued Nantes goalkeeper Rémy Riou this week. "Our collective is our biggest strength, and we need to lean on that against a PSG side still finding their feet. The majority of our players are new to Ligue 1. We need to learn quickly but there is something there to build on." Riou admitted that he hadn't seen PSG's draw with Ajaccio, and therefore missed Ochoa's heroic display in thwarting the capital club for so long. However, he is bracing himself for a busy night against the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Cavani. "Everyone is talking to me about it (Memo Ochoa's performance), but all forwards have good days and bad days. People talk more about big games like that, but PSG are not the only team out there. That said, we will have our work cut out just like Memo did. I just hope it will be my day on Sunday." Nantes can welcome back Jordan Veretout after suspension while PSG were hoping Blaise Matuidi could play after he suffered a nasty head knock against Ajaccio. 3 -HISTORY: Nantes have played host to PSG on 35 previous occasions in the top flight of French football, with les Canaris winning 15, PSG winning eight and the remaining 12 encounters ending in draws. -Nantes won 6-0 in the first-ever top-flight meeting of the clubs in September 1971 at their old Stade Marcel-Saupin. That win remains their biggest in this fixture. PSG's biggest win in Nantes dates back to October 1999, when Laurent Leroy netted twice in a 4-0 victory. -The last meeting of the clubs came in February 2009, when Ludovic Giuly bagged a brace and Peguy Luyindula and Stéphane Sessegnon were also on target in a 4-1 PSG win. Djamel Abdoun scored Nantes' goal from the penalty spot in front of 29,688 at the Stade de la Beaujoire. Mamadou Sakho and Zoumana Camara were both in the visitors' line-up that day, while Claude Makelele was their captain. Filip Djordjevic lined up for Nantes. -Nantes have won just one of their last seven home meetings with PSG. That was a 1-0 win in October 2004, when Nicolas Savinaud scored the winner from the penalty spot in the 88th minute. -FC NANTES -GENERAL: Nantes came into Week 3 in sixth place in Ligue 1 on three points. They had an identical record to Valenciennes in fifth and sit one point above champions PSG, who were 13th coming into the weekend. -Last weekend, les Canaris lost 2-1 at FC Lorient, despite taking the lead courtesy of a Fabien Audard own-goal in the 17th minute. Vincent Aboubakar (39') and Jérémie Aliadière (60') netted for Lorient in front of 16,614 at the Stade Yves Allainmat - Le Moustoir. -The Nantes line-up against Lorient: Riou; Cissokho, Djilobodji, Vizcarrondo, Veigneau (c); Eudeline (Bedoya, 51'), Deaux (Trébel, 81'), Touré, Bessat (Aristeguieta, 74'); Gakpé, Djordjevic. -Nantes won promotion from Ligue 2 last season after finishing third with 69 points, seven points behind champions AS Monaco but six points clear of SM Caen in fourth. They returned to Ligue 1 after a four-year absence. -Nantes spent a total of seven weeks at the top of the Ligue 2 table last season and were permanent members of the promotion places from Week 11 onwards. -Nantes scored 54 goals last season, a tally bettered only by the two clubs who finished above them, Monaco (64) and EA Guingamp (63). -Filip Djordjevic was Nantes' leading scorer last season with 20 league goals, followed by Fernando Aristeguieta, who netted eight, and Serge Gakpé, who scored six. Jordan Veretout provided six assists. -Les Canaris scored three goals or more on five occasions last season, including in 4-0 wins at home to RC Lens and away to LB Châteauroux. They failed to score at all in six games. -Michel Der Zakarian's side conceded just 29 goals in Ligue 2 last season, with only SM Caen (28) letting in fewer. They kept 18 clean sheets and let in three goals on just two occasions, in 3-1 defeats at GFC Ajaccio and Dijon FCO. -Goalkeeper Rémy Riou played in all 38 games in the promotion campaign, while Papy Mison Djilobodji and Vincent Bessat both appeared 36 times. -Der Zakarian's side endured a disappointing pre-season, losing three, drawing three and winning just one of their seven friendly matches. They were beaten by Evian-Thonon-Gaillard (0-1), Angers SCO (1-3) and EA Guingamp (0-1), while draws came against Vendée Poiré sur Vie (2-2), Stade Rennais FC (1-1) and USJA Carquefou (1-1). They then beat Vannes OC of the third tier Nantes have averaged just 36 percent possession in their two games to date, fewer than any other side coming into the weekend. -HOME FORM: Nantes beat SC Bastia 2-0 on the opening day at the Stade de la Beaujoire, Filip Djordjevic (23') and a Julian Palmieri own-goal (90+1') sealing the points in front of 24,727 fans. Jordan Veretout (65') was sent-off for the hosts, while Ilan (70') was red-carded for the visitors. -Nantes had the third-best home record in Ligue 2 last season, winning ten, drawing seven and losing two of their 19 matches at the Stade de la Beaujoire. Fernando Aristeguieta has had a back problem. -PARIS SAINT-GERMAIN -GENERAL: PSG lay 13th in the table coming into the weekend after being the only club to draw each of their first two matches. They lay four points adrift of the top four clubs. -Last weekend, PSG drew 1-1 at home against AC Ajaccio, Edinson Cavani (86') rescuing a point for the champions after Benoît Pedretti (9') had put the Corsicans in front. -The PSG line-up against Ajaccio: Sirigu; Jallet, Alex, Thiago Silva (c), Maxwell; Thiago Motta, Matuidi (Verratti, 69'); Lucas (Ongenda, 77'), Pastore (Lavezzi, 58'); Cavani, Ibrahimovic. -PSG had 38 shots on goal against Ajaccio, the most by any team in a Ligue 1 game since the season. Their tally of 17 shots on target is the highest registered by the club since the LFP began to use official statistics. They have had 49 shots on goal in their opening two games, while Zlatan Ibrahimovic has had 12, more than any other player in Ligue 1, including six on target. He also had more shots than any other player last season, with PSG have completed 89 percent of their passes in the opening two games, a better percentage than any other team. -This is the third season running in which PSG have failed to win either of their opening two league games. Indeed, last season they drew their opening three games. -Paris are unbeaten in their last 13 Ligue 1 games since a 1-0 loss at Stade de Reims on March 2, winning nine and drawing four. They have scored at least once in every one of these games. -The capital club were champions last season with 83 points, leaving them 12 points clear of Olympique de Marseille in second. It was the highest points tally achieved by any team since Olympique Lyonnais won the title with 84 points in Last season, PSG were never lower than fourth from Week 5 onwards and never relinquished top spot after late January, staying there for the final 17 weeks of the campaign. -Carlo Ancelotti's side scored 69 goals last season, more than any other team. Lyon were the next best attack, with 61 goals scored. They scored three goals or more in ten games, including four-goal showings on five occasions. They failed to score at all in just four games. -Zlatan Ibrahimovic was Ligue 1's leading scorer last season with 30 goals, but PSG's next most prolific striker was Kévin Gameiro, with eight. Javier Pastore provided eight assists, while Jérémy Menez and Ibrahimovic provided seven each. -Ancelotti's side conceded just 23 goals last season, fewer than anybody else. They kept 23 clean sheets while their 3-2 defeat at Sochaux in Week 25 was the only game in which they conceded more than twice. -No PSG player appeared in every league game last season, but Blaise Matuidi played in 37 of the 38 league games. Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Javier Pastore both appeared 34 times. -In pre-season, Paris visited Austria, where they lost 3-1 to SK Sturm Graz but beat Rapid Vienna 2-1. 5 -They had by far the best away record in Ligue 1 last season, winning 12, drawing four and losing three of their 19 games on the road, collecting 40 points. -PSG's away defeats last season came at OGC Nice (2-1, Wk 15), Sochaux (3-2, Wk 25) and Reims (1-0, Wk 27). -Their biggest away wins came at Bastia, Valenciennes and Toulouse, all by a 4-0 margin. -TROPHÉE DES CHAMPIONS: Laurent Blanc's side won the traditional curtain-raiser to the season, beating Girondins de Bordeaux 2-1 at the Stade de l'amitié in the Gabonese capital Libreville. Blaise Matuidi needed stitches after suffering a nasty head wound against Ajaccio, but revealed that he would be "back on the field soon". -TRIVIA: The last ticket for the game was sold on Tuesday, ensuring that the game will be played in front of a full house. -Earlier this month, Nantes were ordered to play one match behind closed doors, albeit with the punishment suspended for now, after the use of pyrotechnics by fans, and a pitch invasion, marred their meeting with Sedan in Week 37 last season. The club were initially fined 25,000 euros before that punishment was quashed. -Les Canaris will face a hearing on August 28 after Bastia complained that Abdoulaye Touré, who had been brought on as a second-half substitute when the clubs met in Week 1, should have been serving a suspension and was therefore ineligible. They risk forfeiting the match and having the goals they scored in their 2-0 win wiped out. Touré has said he will appeal his ban on a technicality in the hope that Nantes keep the points they lost. -Earlier this month, Nantes mourned the passing of their former coach, and former France winger, Jean Vincent at the age of 82. 6 FC Nantes - Historically one of France's biggest and most successful clubs, Nantes are back in Ligue 1 after a four-season absence. They finished third in Ligue 2 in to secure their return to the top flight for the first time since In their last Ligue 1 campaign, Nantes went straight back down to the second tier, finishing 19th with just 37 points from 38 games.
