2 PREVIEW : AJ AUXERRE - PARIS SAINT-GERMAIN Feature Preview Auxerre have endured a season to forget and defeat to title-chasing Paris Saint-Germain on Saturday evening would see the Burgundy club slip even deeper into the relegation mire. The two teams were already worlds apart last season when Jean Fernandez guided his side into third place and Antoine Kombouaré's men were left with the consolation of the French Cup after finishing a disappointing 13th in the league. This season, Auxerre have rubbed shoulders with Real Madrid, Ajax and AC Milan in the Champions League, but while PSG have shone both domestically and internationally, Fernandez's squad have proved unable to produce anywhere near the Ligue 1 form that earned them a place at European football's top table. While goals have again been hard to come by, their inability to keep opponents at bay - something which was the keystone of last season's success - has proved their Achilles heel, and only four teams have an inferior defensive record in Ligue 1, leaving Auxerre in 17th place, a single point above the relegation zone heading into the weekend's fixtures. ''Yes it's worrying, but I didn't have to wait for this game to see that,'' said Fernandez following his team's 3-0 mauling by Bordeaux last weekend, which stretched their winless run to 12 Ligue 1 matches and 16 in all competitions. ''We knew that Bordeaux would react here after being thrashed by Lorient, but even so we didn't do anything. When you lose away and don't win at home, it's clear that you've got to ask yourself questions.'' Auxerre's inability to finish teams off at the Stade Abbé Deschamps has badly undermined their challenge. Though they have tasted defeat only twice at home in Ligue 1, their eight draws is a league-high with all their last four home matches ending 1-1. That has helped contribute to the worst record of any team in the division since the turn of the year, and left club captain Benoît Pedretti a worried man. ''The club is in danger, many people think we'll go down. We have to wake up and re-find some fighting spirit. If you don't win tackles, you can't win matches,'' said the French international midfielder, whose team has enjoyed the second-lowest amount of possession per game in Ligue 1 this season. ''Our attitude wasn't right when we came back after the winter break. We said to ourselves that it would come right, and didn't work at it. That's the problem.'' Unlike their opponents, PSG have picked up in 2011 where they left off in 2010 to maintain the momentum built in the first half of the season. Through to the last 16 of the Europa League, Kombouaré saw a youthful side reach the semi-finals of the French Cup with a 2-0 defeat of Ligue 2 frontrunners Le Mans on Wednesday to extend his team?s unbeaten streak to six games in all competitions while last weekend?s 2-1 defeat of Toulouse left PSG fourth, just two points off top spot in the table. ''It's a victory born of difficulty, but that's how I like them,'' said Kombouaré, who had a Sylvain Armand strike and an own-goal to thank for seeing off the south-westerners at the Parc des Princes. ''To see my team dig deep like that, that's what's interesting for the matches to come. We had difficulty in keeping the ball, we were knocked out of our stride, but we dug in and that - psychologically - is fantastic.'' In stark contrast to Auxerre, PSG have been prolific up front - only Lille have scored more goals - despite leading scorer Nene, who struck after just 50 seconds of PSG's 3-2 defeat to Auxerre earlier this season, failing to find the net in Their defensive record has been impressive too, and is bettered by only four teams in Ligue 1. ''We have to hang on to the teams at the top to be well-placed come April,'' said Kombouaré, whose club have won almost as many Ligue 1 matches in Auxerre as the hosts over their 30 top-flight meetings to date. ''It's going to be a breathtaking end to the season. 3 - HISTORY: There have been 30 top-flight meetings between the two in Burgundy. Auxerre have claimed 11 wins while PSG have triumphed ten times. - LAST SEASON: The pair played out a 1-1 draw in Week 31. Daniel Niculae (now Monaco) gave the hosts an 11th-minute lead, but Younousse Sankhare (now Dijon) quickly levelled (16). - PSG are unbeaten on their last four visits to the Stade Abbé Deschamps, winning twice, and they have suffered only a single defeat in their last seven league matches in Auxerre. - THIS SEASON: Auxerre won the duo's Week 10 encounter at the Parc des Princes 3-2. Nene (1, 68) scored twice, but Jean-Pascal Mignot (4), Roy Contout (11) and Julien Quercia (24) found the net for the visitors. - AUXERRE - GENERAL: Auxerre's winless streak was extended to 16 competitive games when they were beaten 3-0 at Bordeaux in Week 25. Alou Diarra (13), Anthony Modeste (53 pen), Jaroslav Plasil (79) scored for the hosts. - Auxerre have the worst record of any team in Ligue 1 in Both Nancy and Arles-Avignon have collected three points, like Auxerre, but the Burgundy club have an inferior goal difference (-6 to -7). - The loss in the south west was their eighth reverse in their last 16 competitive fixtures. They have failed to win in 12 Ligue 1 games (8 draws) - a run that equals their worst-ever series, which dates back to Auxerre finished 14th at the end of the campaign, two points off the relegation zone. - Auxerre head into Week 26 in 17th place, just a point above the drop zone. They have not been higher than tenth place since the opening day of the season. - Auxerre's last victory in any competition came with a 2-1 home triumph over Rennes in Week LAST SEASON: Auxerre finished in third place, a point behind second-placed Lyon, seven points off champions Marseille, and a point ahead of fourth-placed Lille. - COUPE DE LA LIGUE: Auxerre were beaten 2-0 in the semi-finals by Marseille. - FRENCH CUP: Fifth-division Wasquehal scored a shock 2-1 win in the Round of 64. Adama Coulibaly put Auxerre ahead on 12 minutes, but two goals in the last nine minutes put the amateurs through. - HOME RECORD: Only Caen (13 points) and Arles-Avignon (8 points) have picked up fewer points on their own turf than Auxerre (14). - Only five teams have lost fewer home matches than Auxerre (2). However, their eight draws at home is the highest tally in the division. - Auxerre have not won at home in their last five league matches (1 defeat). The last four have all ended with 1-1 scorelines. - TEAM NEWS: Stéphane Grichting returns for the first time since Week 22 after recovering from a fractured finger. Mignot (foot) and Quercia (hip) are out while Birsa (thigh) is unlikely to start. - ATTACK/DEFENCE: With 29 goals, Auxerre's attack is the 11th-best in Ligue 1 while their tally of 33 conceded is surpassed by just four teams. - LAST SEASON: Auxerre conceded just 29 goals in the whole of last season, a tally seven goals lower than any other team in the division. - Auxerre have conceded the opening goal 17 times in games this season, the most in Ligue 1. - Auxerre have conceded the most goals (8) of any team in the opening 15 minutes of matches. - POSSESSION: Auxerre have enjoyed an average of 46% possession in league games so far. I'm sure they'll start to show their true colours.'' - PSG - GENERAL: PSG head into Week 26 in fourth place, two points behind leaders Lille, following their 2-1 home win over Toulouse. Sylvain Armand (28) and an Adrian Javier Gunino own-goal (38) gave PSG the win with Franck Tabanou (62) pulling one back for the visitors. - It was PSG's second successive win, and extended their unbeaten run to three league matches. - They are unbeaten in six games in all competitions (3 draws). - EUROPA LEAGUE: PSG reached the last 16 despite only drawing 0-0 at home in the second leg of their tie with Belarusian side BATE Borisov. The Ligue 1 club's 2-2 draw in Minsk saw them through on away goals. They now play Benfica with the first leg in Lisbon on 10 March and the return a week later. - FRENCH CUP: PSG beat second division frontrunners Le Mans 2-0 after extra-time on Wednesday to reach the semi-finals. Youngsters Jean-Christophe Bahebeck (108) and Neeskens Kebano (116) found the net for the hosts. Grégory Coupet saved a first-half penalty, and Zoumana Camara - who had given away the spot-kick - was later sent off (78th minute), while Le Mans also had a player dismissed in the opening minute of extra-time. - COUPE DE LA LIGUE: PSG were knocked out by Montpellier at the semi-final stage, losing 1-0 after extra-time on the south coast. - LAST SEASON: PSG finished in 13th place, 31 points behind champions Marseille. - AWAY RECORD: Only Marseille (20) have taken more points away from home than PSG (19), though OM have played a game more. - PSG have five wins, four draws and three defeats in 12 away matches this season. - PSG have recorded two wins and two defeats in their last four away matches in Ligue 1. - TEAM NEWS: Apoula Edel should return in goal after being replaced by Coupet for the midweek Cup tie. 5 - French Under-21 coach Erick Mombaerts was at the Parc des Princes on Wednesday to watch PSG's tie with Le Mans. - Edel made a public apology to coach Antoine Kombouaré after the pair had a heated exchange in the immediate aftermath of PSG's win over Toulouse last weekend. AJ Auxerre - Auxerre finished the season in 3rd place - the club's best finish since season a ranking that saw them qualify for the preliminary rounds of the UEFA Champions League. - Auxerre have reached the Champions League on two previous occasions: in the campaign, when they made it to the quarter-finals before losing out 4-1 on aggregate to eventual champions Borussia Dortmund, and in season , when despite wins over Dortmund and Arsenal in the group phase, they failed to make it to the knockout rounds. - Last season's top scorer was Poland international Ireneusz Jelen with 14 goals in just 29 appearances.
