2 PREVIEW : VALENCIENNES FC - OLYMPIQUE LYONNAIS Feature Preview Olympique Lyonnais coach Rémi Garde says he might make changes for Friday evening's game at Valenciennes as he is dissatisfied with the way OL have played in After being knocked out of the French Cup at the Round-of-64 stage by third-tier Epinal, OL returned to Ligue 1 action with a scrappy 2-1 victory at 19th-placed Troyes, before a disappointing 0-0 draw at home to Evian, another relegation-threatened club. Second to leaders Paris Saint-Germain on goal difference alone, OL could return to the summit on Friday evening, although they are up against a VAFC side that has only lost once at home all season, when they were beaten 4-0 by PSG. Garde is uncertain what squad will be at his disposition when the transfer window closes, with club president Jean-Michel Aulas keen to reduce the wage bill. Garde said: "I find it hard to understand just how destabilising the mercato is. Things could change right up until January 31." OL top scorer Bafétimbi Gomis refused to shake Garde's hand when he was substituted against Evian and the coach said: "The small tensions dissipated quickly. I'm not a rancorous person. I want to move on. It didn't make me happy but it won't be a determining factor in my team selection for Friday. My attackers aren't contributing as much defensively. In the first half of the season I was happy with their defensive efforts and they must now get back to doing more in that department. "There could be changes to the team as what we've produced in our last three games has not been good enough. We've lacked quality and commitment. I will pick players to win games. Everybody is important, even the 14th man who comes on in the 75th minute has a responsibility in the team's success." Apart from Jimmy Briand (hamstring) and Bakary Koné (Africa Cup of Nations with Burkina Faso), Garde has a full squad from which to select, including Milan Bisevac, who made 100 Ligue 1 appearances for VAFC between 2008 and 2011 before joining PSG. Bisevac said: "Valenciennes is in my heart. That's where I really started to progress and I played a lot of Ligue 1 matches there. It was a special time and I'll never forget those years." VAFC have won their last two home clashes with OL, indeed the visitors have managed only one victory in the north in their last seven trips. VAFC's confidence has been dented severely of late and they have managed only five points from their last six league games, dropping into the bottom half of the table for the first time this season in the process. Poor weather conditions have forced Valenciennes to train at neighbours Lens this week and coach Daniel Sanchez admitted: "It was really nice of Lens and got us out of a tight spot, even if it wasn't ideal as the pitch we used is smaller than that of a Ligue 1 pitch. OL is a huge club that has rediscovered its status. After three straight away games, it is important for us to be back at the Stade du Hainaut. We know that at home we have greater confidence. Last season we were missing players when we took on Lyon and still won. This season, there is no reason why that won't be the case again." Benjamin Angoua is suspended after his red card in the 1-1 draw at Ajaccio in Week 21. Carlos Sanchez (hamstring) and top assists provider Gaël Danic (fractured fibula) are out, while the game may come too soon for Grégory Pujol (calf) and Dusan Djuric (knee). 3 - HISTORY: VAFC have hosted OL 29 times in Ligue 1. VAFC have won ten times, OL have been victorious on eight occasions, and there have been 10 draws. - OL's only win in their last seven trips to VAFC was 2-1 in March VAFC wins, 3 draws in that time. - VAFC have won the last two in the north. Last season Aly Cissokho's 28th-minute own goal separated the sides at the Stade du Hainaut in Week 19. In Week 21 of the previous season at the old Stade Nungesser VAFC won 2-1. Current OL player Milan Bisevac put VAFC ahead in the 51st-minute from the penalty spot. Grégory Pujol (58') made it two before Michel Bastos (70') pulled one back. - THIS SEASON: In Week 4 this season OL were 3-2 home winners over VAFC. Gil (12') put VAFC ahead with a header from a corner. Bastos (18') then equalised from a tight angle after Nicolas Penneteau spilled the ball and further goals from Bafétimbi Gomis (21' pen.) - after Alexandre Lacazette had been fouled by David Ducourtioux - and Clément Grenier's 1st Ligue 1 goal - a left-footed drive from the edge of the box (66') - had OL 3-1 ahead. Pujol (76') pulled one back with an instinctive finish after Carlos Sanchez drove a free-kick into the box. - VALENCIENNES: - GENERAL: VAFC are 11th in Ligue 1 with 30 points from 21 games (8W, 6D, 7L). It's the first time they have been in the bottom half of the table all season. They were fifth as recently as the conclusion of Week 16 and sixth after Week After a 5-0 loss at Nice in Week 20, VAFC were held 1-1 at Ajaccio in Week 21. Adrian Mutu (30') put Ajaccio in front. Opa Nguette (69') equalised with his first Ligue 1 goal. Benjamin Angou was sent off in the 62nd minute for a wild tackle on Mutu. Soon after Mutu's retaken 'panenka' penalty, after encroachment when the Romanian scored from his first effort, was caught by Nicolas Penneteau. - VAFC team v Ajaccio: Penneteau; Néry, Angoua, Isimat-Mirin, Bong; Gomis, Sankharé; Nguette, Dossevi (Ducourtioux 81'), Aboubakar (Rose 69'); Le Tallec (Marco Da Silva 90+3') - VAFC have won only one of their last six L1 matches (2D, 3 L). - VAFC are sixth in the attack table with 32 goals scored. They have scored three or more on five occasions. - Foued Kadir, now of Olympique de Marseille, is club top scorer with six. Grégory Pujol and Anthony Le Tallec both have five. - Gaël Danic has six assists. Only Dimitri Payet and Steed Malbranque (seven) have more. Kadir has four. Le Tallec and Dossevi both have three. - VAFC had scored 19 goals in six games before their current run of only six goals in their last nine. They have endured four blanks in that time. - VAFC are joint-13th in the defence table with 30 goals conceded. - They have kept five clean sheets but have conceded in 15 of their last 16 games after opening the season with four clean sheets in five matches. - VAFC have had three players sent off this season: Gil was sent off in the 2-1 defeat at Brest in Week 6, Carlos Sanchez saw red at Lille in Week 10 and Benjamin Angoua at Ajaccio in Week HOME FORM: VAFC are fifth in the home form table with 21 points from 10 matches. - Their one home defeat was 4-0 to PSG in Week 17 when Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored his first hat-trick in French football. - VAFC have won all five home games in which they've scored the first goal. - They have failed to score in only three home games. - Valenciennes are 10th in the attendances table with an average of 15, COUPE DE LA LIGUE: Valenciennes were beaten 4-2 after extra time away to Ligue 2 Monaco in the round of 32, despite being 2-0 up after 32 minutes. - COUPE DE FRANCE: Valenciennes lost at second division side Istres in the third round on 5 January. VAFC went down 4-3 on penalties after a 3-3 draw at the end of 120 minutes. Dossevi (74') gave VAFC the lead against the run of play. 4 additional 30 minutes as they equalised right at the end of normal time with a fabulous solo goal scored by Sid Ali Yahia Cherif. 38-year-old former Algerian international Nassim Akrour sensationally netted in the 102nd and 103rd minutes to put Istres 3-1 up. Vincent Aboubakar (111') and Rudy Mater (114' pen.) forced penalties. Penneteau, the keeper smashing home Valenciennes' fifth penalty to keep them alive. Back between the sticks, Penneteau could not keep out Driss Fetouhi and so Istres qualified. - TRANSFERS: Defender Lindsay Rose joined from Laval on a three-and-a-half-year deal and Israeli international midfielder Maor Melikson joined from Wisla Krakow on a two-and-a-half-year deal for a fee estimated at between 800 and 900,000 euros. Younousse Sankharé has been loaned from Dijon until the end of the season. The only games in which they have failed to score were those aforementioned three defeats plus the 0-0 with Evian. They have scored three goals or more on six separate occasions, including in the 5-2 home win against SC Bastia in Week Gomis is club top scorer with 11 goals, third only to Zlatan Ibrahimovic of PSG (19 before Week 22) and Nice's Dario Cvitanich (12 before Wk22) in the Ligue 1 scoring stakes. Lisandro, club top scorer in each of his three seasons with OL, has six. Gomis' goal against Nice ended a three-game goal drought, his joint-longest such scoreless run in Steed Malbranque has supplied seven assists this season, putting him level with Lille's Dimitri Payet at the top of the L1 table. Clément Grenier has managed three. - OL have conceded 18 goals. Only PSG, Bordeaux and Saint-Etienne have conceded fewer. They have kept eight clean sheets, including in four of their last six games. The 3-0 defeat at Toulouse (Wk 14) is the only game in which they have conceded more than twice. - OL have conceded only six goals in the first half of games this season. - OL have had three red cards this season: Dejan Lovren was sent off against Bastia in Week 11 and against Nice in Week 19, while Mouhamadou Dabo saw red at Saint-Etienne (Wk 16). - AWAY FORM: OL are fifth in the away form table with 16 points from 10 games (4W, 4D, 2L). - OL had recorded back-to-back away wins (at OM and ASSE) for the first time in 2012 before falling 1-0 at PSG in Week 18 (Matuidi 45+2'). - OL went five away games unbeaten at the start of the season before falling to Toulouse in Week Gomis has scored four times away. - COUPE DE LA LIGUE: As one of France's European representatives, last season's runners-up Lyon earned a bye directly through to the last 16, where they were beaten 3-1 at OGC Nice. - COUPE DE FRANCE: Holders Lyon were sensationally knocked out at Epinal (National, D3) in the Round of 64, losing 4-2 on penalties following a 3-3 draw at the end of 120 minutes. 5 and Gueida Fofana restored parity by the 20th minute. Lisandro, scorer of the winner in the Cup final against Quevilly at the Stade de France, put OL ahead for the first time just beyond the hour from the penalty spot after a handball inside the area. Valentin Focki's solo effort 15 minutes from time forced extra-time. Fofana and Steed Malbranque both hit the woodwork for OL in the first period of extra-time. Michel Bastos confidently tucked away OL's first from the spot but Fofana's was saved by Olivier Robin to give Epinal a 2-1 advantage. Vercoutre denied Tristan Do from Epinal's next kick, only for Bakary Koné, OL's third taker, to blaze over. Lisandro converted Lyon's fourth kick but that still left home centre-forward Famara Diedhiou the opportunity to win it which he didn't pass up. -TROPHÉE DES CHAMPIONS: OL won the traditional curtain-raiser to the season, beating Montpellier 4-2 on penalties after a 2-2 draw at the Red Bull Arena, home of the New York Red Bulls, in Harrison, New Jersey. -EUROPA LEAGUE: Lyon have qualified for the last 32 after finishing top of Group I, above Sparta Prague (CZE), Athletic Club de Bilbao (ESP) and Hapoel Kiryat Shmona (ISR). -OL beat Hapoel Kiryat Shmona 2-0 at home in their final game on December 6 to finish with 16 points from their six group games. They collected more points than any of the other 47 teams in the group stage. - OL have been drawn against English Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur, to whom they sold goalkeeper Hugo Lloris last summer, in the Round of 32 with the first leg at White Hart Lane on February 14 and the return leg a week later. The winners of the two-legged tie will face Napoli or Viktoria Plzen in the last 16 on March 7 and INTERNATIONALS: Bakary Koné has been named in the Burkina Faso squad for the Africa Cup of Nations. - TRANSFERS: Left-back Fabian Monzon has been loaned to Brazilian club Fluminense. There is an option-to-buy clause in the deal which Fluminense need to take up by the end of June if they are to hold on to the Argentinean international. - SUSPENSIONS: None. - INJURIES: Jimmy Briand is not yet ready to return having been out with a hamstring injury since the 3-2 win away to Athletic Club de Bilbao on November 8. Valenciennes FC - Valenciennes returned to the top flight in after finishing as Ligue 2 champions in the second time in the club's history after Valenciennes finished 12th last season on 43 points, in the same position but with five fewer points than the campaign. They were only five points above the relegation zone in The northerners registered 19 defeats last season - only one club which finished below them on the table, Dijon FCO, suffered more reverses - but they also racked up 12 victories, the most of any team in the lower half of the table. - Daniel Sanchez took over as coach in summer 2011 having been in charge at second division Tours for the preceding four years. He was Girondins de Bordeaux's assistant coach ( ) and general manager of Nagoya (JAP, ). Prior to that, he was in charge of OGC Nice's youth programme between 1988 and Born on November 21, 1953, Sanchez is in charge of a Ligue 1 club for the first time. - Valenciennes have never won the Coupe de France or Coupe de la Ligue, although they did reach the Coupe de France final in 1951, when they lost 3-0 to Strasbourg. - They reached the quarter-finals of the Coupe de France in , losing 3-1 to Stade Rennais FC. Olympique Lyonnais - Last season Lyon finished fourth in Ligue 1 with 64 points - ten points behind third-placed Lille - and will not feature in the Champions League after 13 straight seasons of having qualified for Europe's premier continental club competition. - In OL did at least put an end to their trophy drought as they won the Coupe de France beating amateur club Quevilly (National, D3) 1-0 at the Stade de France. Lisandro Lopez scored the only goal of the game. OL hadn't claimed silverware since doing the Ligue1-Coupe de France double in Lyon won the Trophée des Champions on July , beating Ligue 1 champions Montpellier 4-2 on penalties in New York after the sides had played out a 2-2 draw. - Lyon parted company with coach Claude Puel in the summer of Puel failed to win any silverware in his time in charge, although he did lead the club to the semi-finals of the Champions League for the first time in their history in , beating Real Madrid and Bordeaux before losing to Bayern Munich in the last four. - Prior to Puel's arrival in 2008 Lyon had won the Ligue 1 title seven seasons in a row. - Puel's successor Rémi Garde is in his first spell in charge of a professional club. - Born locally, Garde spent nine years as a player at Lyon between 1984 and 1993, forming part of the team that won promotion to Ligue 1 in He went on to play for Strasbourg and Arsenal, before returning to Lyon to work as assistant under Paul Le Guen and Gérard Houllier.
