2 PREVIEW : MONTPELLIER HÉRAULT SC - OLYMPIQUE LYONNAIS Feature Preview Out-going Ligue 1 champions Montpellier will be hoping a tenth home victory in 11 games this weekend against Olympique Lyonnais can rekindle the club's slender hopes of qualifying for Europe next season. With just six matches left to play, seventh-placed Montpellier are 19 points adrift of leaders Paris Saint-Germain and eight points behind Friday's opponents Lyon in third place. While defending their Ligue 1 crown became mathematically impossible last weekend, René Girard's side can still qualify for a third consecutive European campaign, but they will have to bounce back from winning just one of their last five league matches. Their current slump coincides with the announcement from club president Louis Nicollin that Girard will be leaving the club at the end of the season. "Honestly, yes, [the current friction between the president and the coach] is not helping. These aren't the easiest conditions to work in, but I don't like to hide behind excuses. What happens on the pitch is the players' responsibility," said Benjamin Stambouli who scored a late consolation goal in last weekend's 4-2 loss away to Bordeaux. Montpellier midfielder Anthony Mounier, a product of the Lyon youth academy and who featured in OL's 2008 championship winning season, believes Europe is still a possibility, but that victory over his former club is essential: "When you look at the standings, it's possible, even though the defeat to Bordeaux was coupled with victories to those teams above us on the ladder," he said. "We are five or six points behind now and there aren't many matches left. "We have to win against Lyon, and then we have to win the five matches that follow if we want to qualify for Europe next season." Lyon have had their own run of poor form, going five games without a win, including three consecutive defeats, before bouncing back with a 3-1 win away to mid-table Toulouse last weekend. The run has seen OL pull out of their title race with PSG and drop as low as fourth behind Marseille and Saint-Etienne before the win in Toulouse. Lyon striker Bafétimbi Gomis scored his 14th goal of the season in Olympique Lyonnais' 3-1 win against Toulouse FC on Sunday and has now netted 86 times in total in Ligue 1 over the course of his career. As a result, he has now scored more Ligue 1 goals than any other player currently active in France's top flight, leaving Ludovic Giuly of FC Lorient trailing on 85. Lyon coach Rémi Garde has warned his side against complacency this weekend: "The win is a boost but we can't rest on those three points. Every game from here on in will be a battle," he said. "Montpellier has never been a place to pick up easy points. That's the case again this season. They have a quality side and I'm not here to judge their performances. I don?t know if they still believe in European qualification... but games against OL are always tough games with a lot of intensity." 3 - HISTORY: Montpellier have entertained Lyon 18 times in Ligue 1, winning seven, drawing six and losing five. - In Week 20 last season, Olivier Giroud scored the only goal of the game in the 62nd minute, courtesy of a Geoffrey Dernis assist. It was the future champions first home win over Lyon since a 3-0 triumph back in November In between time, OL drew once before winning the next three encounters. - THIS SEASON: These two sides have already met twice this season, in the Trophée des Champions and in Week 15 of Ligue 1. - Inside the Red Bull Arena in New York in the season curtain-raiser, OL defeated Montpellier 4-2 on penalties after the match ended 2-2 after 90 minutes. John Utaka (27') and Emmanuel Herrera (pen. 55') twice gave Montpellier the lead, only for Bafetimbi Gomis (44') and Jimmy Briand (77') to equalise twice. Gaëtan Charbonnier and Henri Bedimo both missed their spot kicks for MHSC before Jimmy Biand converted the winning kick. - In Week 15 of the league, Lyon recorded a 1-0 victory courtesy of Bafetimbi Gomis' only goal of the game in the 26th minute. MHSC - GENERAL: Montpellier are currently seventh in Ligue 1, 19 points adrift of leaders Paris Saint-Germain and eight points behind third-placed Olympique Lyonnais. - Last weekend, René Girard's men lost 4-2 against Bordeaux. It was their third consecutive away defeat. - Bordeaux raced into a 3-0 lead inside 26 minutes before Rémy Cabella pulled a goal back for Montpellier in first-half stoppage time (45+1'). Henri Saivet rapidly made it 4-1 early in the second half (54') before Benjamin Stambouli netted a late consolation goal (90+2'). - Montpellier boast the sixth-best attack in Ligue 1 with 49 goals scored and the equal ninth-best defence with 41 conceded. - Souleymane Camara and Younes Belhanda are the club top scorers with nine goals apiece while Rémy Cabella has a club-high six assists. - HOME FORM: Montpellier are the second-best home side in Ligue 1, behind Paris, with 34 of their 48 points garnered from 16 matches at the Stade de La Mosson. - MHSC have only lost twice at home in Ligue 1 this season: against Marseille, 1-0 in Week 3 and against Evian, 3-2, in Week 8. - Since then they have won ten and drawn two of their subsequent 12 home matches in Ligue 1. - Their most recent home match ended in a 3-1 victory over Valenciennes in Week 31. 4 - OL: - GENERAL: Olympique Lyonnais currently sit third on the Ligue 1 ladder with 56 points, 11 points behind leader Paris and two behind second-placed Marseille. - Last weekend Lyon ended a winless run of five matches and three consecutive defeats with a 3-1 win at home to Toulouse. - Clément Grenier opened the scoring in the eighth minute, only for Wissam Ben Yedder to equalise midway through the first half (28'). Bakari Koné gave the hosts the lead back early in the second half (49') before Bafétimbi Gomis made the points safe (63'). - The win saw OL retake third place on the standings from archrivals Saint-Etienne. - AWAY FORM: OL are the fifth-best side away from home this season with 23 points picked up on the road from 16 matches. - They are winless in their last three away matches, including the 1-0 Week 31 loss to Reims. Maxime Gonalons' 17th-minute header seemed set to take OL through to the last 16 until Mousa Dembélé netted the decisive goal in the 90th minute. - Rémi Garde's men had finished top of Group I, winning five and drawing one of their six matches against Sparta Prague, Athletic Bilbao and Hapoel Kiryat Shmona of Israel. - SUSPENSIONS: OL's Serbia international defender Milan Bisevac, sent off in the 1-0 loss away to Stade de Reims in Week 31 serves the second of his two match ban. - INJURIES: 21-year-old forward Alexandre Lacazette has been ruled out of the Montpellier clash with a hamstring strain that will sideline him for three weeks.
