2 PREVIEW : OLYMPIQUE LYONNAIS - GIRONDINS DE BORDEAUX Feature Preview Olympique Lyonnais president Jean-Michel Aulas has praised coach Rémi Garde for his work during a difficult time for the club with OL having won only one game in their last 11 in all competitions ahead of hosting Bordeaux on Sunday. Speaking after announcing a loss of 20 million euros for the year through to June 2013, an improvement on the 28 million euro losses of the previous two seasons, Aulas admitted failure to qualify for the Champions League had had a major impact. The sales of Hugo Lloris, Dejan Lovren, Kim Källström, Aly Cissokho, Jérémy Pied and Anthony Martial brought in a total of 36.2 million euros but Aulas, who took over OL in 1987, has refused to rule out further sales. Aulas said: "There could be more sales but it won't necessarily mean parting with Clément Grenier, Maxime Gonalons or Alexandre Lacazette. If we'd been in the Champions League then our accounts would have been in equilibrium without the need for any additional sales. I don't want to say there won't be player purchases until we've settled into the Grand Stade but there'll be no major acquisitions until then." It is against that backdrop of player sales and a reduction in the wage bill that Garde's team has struggled. A 5-1 capitulation at Montpellier in Week 9 made this the worst start to a Ligue 1 season for the club since when they also stood 14th in the table with 11 points after nine fixtures before going on to finish third. OL are already six points adrift of the Champions League positions and fully ten points behind Monaco and Paris Saint-Germain entering Week 10. Aulas said: "I've been impressed with Rémi's control when faced by this media storm. We haven't let our heads go down and there's a positive feeling around the club. We've had to contend with numerous injuries. I'm not worried but I'm on alert. I'd like to remind people that we've been in this position before and finished on the podium. There are more reasons to be hopeful than to fear the worst. We've got a quality team and they showed that at the start of the season. We need to work rather than lament our lot." Bordeaux had gone seven matches in all competitions without tasting victory before coming from behind against coach Francis Gillot's former club Sochaux to win 4-1 at the Stade Chaban-Delmas in Week 9. Midfielder Grégory Sertic says that resounding success has done much for morale around the club. Sertic said: "Of course it's boosted our confidence. There were doubts before but we knew we were capable of reacting because of the quality we have in the squad. We've got players here to be competing near the top of the table and it's down to us to prove that as soon as possible, starting with this weekend. "OL are a club experiencing problems, like us. We're in a delicate position because we're near the foot of the table. This is a very important match and we could overtake them in the table. OL didn't expect to be standing 14th in the table so they'll have to overcome that. It will be a huge match on Sunday and it's down to us to take the three points." OL are without defenders Bakary Koné and Samuel Umtiti (both thigh). Mouhamadou Dabo and Milan Bisevac are back from injury. 3 - HISTORY: OL have hosted Bordeaux 48 times in France's top division. OL have won 22 times, Bordeaux have won 13 times and there have been 13 draws. - Bordeaux have a decent recent record at the Stade de Gerland with two wins and a draw from their last four visits. - Last season GdB were 2-0 winners in Week 7 with the goals scored by Benoît Trémoulinas (65') and Cheick Diabaté (82'). - The biggest win in this fixture was a 5-1 success for Lyon in May 2005, when the hosts had already secured a third straight title. Cris and Sidney Govou both scored doubles for OL, after Florent Malouda had cancelled out Albert Riera's opener for the visitors. Govou is back at OL on an amateur contract and Marc Planus is the only Bordeaux man who played that day still at the club. - The sides met in the Champions League quarter-finals in Lyon won 3-2 on aggregate, including a 3-1 first-leg win at the Stade de Gerland. Lisandro López scored twice for OL, with Michel Bastos also on target. Marouane Chamakh scored for Les Girondins. - OL's Yoann Gourcuff was Ligue 1 player of the year when Bordeaux won the title in LYON: - GENERAL: OL enter Week 10 14th in the table with 11 points from nine games (3W, 2D, 4L). - It is OL's worst start to a season since when they also stood 14th in the table with 11 points from nine matches. - In Week 9 OL capitulated 5-1 at Montpellier. Carlos Vela (67', 90+1') scored both the hosts' goals. - OL lost the first leg 2-0 with boyhood Lyon fan Antoine Griezmann and Haris Seferovic scoring Sociedad's goals. - OL reached the play-off with a 2-0 aggregate third qualifying round win over Grasshoppers of Zurich. Vitoria took a 39th-minute lead through Moussa Maazou but Maxime Gonalons (53') equalised. Matchday 3 is another home game with Rijeka the visitors on October INTERNATIONALS: Yassine Benzia enjoyed himself with France's Under-21s scoring twice in the 4-3 Euro qualifying win in Iceland to add to the goal he managed in the 4-1 win over Armenia a few days previously. Jordan Ferri was a late sub v Iceland. Samuel Umtiti had to withdraw from the squad through injury. - Clémént Grenier was in the France squad for the 6-0 friendly win over Australia and the 3-0 World Cup qualifying victory over Finland but played no part in either encounter. - Bakary Koné was forced from the field through injury (thigh) after only four minutes of Burkina Faso's 3-2 win over Algeria in the first leg of their African zone World Cup play-off. - TEAM NEWS: Samuel Umtiti and Bakary Koné (both thigh) are out. They've failed to score in three games. - Cheick Diabaté is club top scorer with five goals, followed by Henri Saivet with three. - Diego Rolan has contributed two assists - GdB have kept two clean sheets. Henri Saivet (38') put Bordeaux in front, only for late goals from Hervin Ongenda (81') and Alex (90+3') to win the game for PSG. - EUROPA LEAGUE: Having won last season's Coupe de France, Bordeaux were one of seven clubs to enter the Europa League directly at the group stage. -Knocked out in the Round of 16 last season, they have been drawn in Group F in this season's competition with APOEL (CYP), Eintracht Frankfurt (GER) and Maccabi Tel-Aviv (ISR). -They faced Eintracht Frankfurt away at the Commerzbank Arena in their opening game on Thursday, September 19. 5 - On Matchday 2 Bordeaux lost 2-1 at home to Israeli champions Maccabi Tel Aviv. Jussiê (48') put GdB in front but Maccabi equalised through Barak Itzhaki (71') and scored the winner eight minutes later through Dor Mikha. - Matchday 3 sees another home game, this time against APOEL Nicosia. GdB are bottom of their section. - INTERNATIONALS: Lamine Sané scored a 14th-minute own goal as Senegal fell 3-1 to Ivory Coast in the first leg of their African zone World Cup qualifying play-off. Henri Saivet came on for the final 13 minutes. The second leg takes place in the Moroccan city of Casablanca on November Abdou Traoré started for Mali in their 3-1 friendly loss in South Korea. - TEAM NEWS: André Poko (ankle), Jérémie Bréchet (ankle) and Nicolas Maurice-Belay (thigh) are all absent. 6 Olympique Lyonnais - Founded in 1950, Lyon had only won three Coupes de France (1964, '67, '73) and a Coupe de la Ligue (2001) before they embarked on an unprecedented run of seven successive Ligue 1 titles from 2002 to 2008, completing a Coupe de France-Ligue 1 double in the latter year. Girondins de Bordeaux - Bordeaux are in their 61st L1 campaign making them the joint-third-longest serving member of the French elite along with AS Saint-Etienne.
