2 PREVIEW : OLYMPIQUE DE MARSEILLE - FC LORIENT Feature Preview Marseille's excellent defensive record at the Stade Vélodrome gives them cause for optimism ahead of facing Lorient in a match which will see Morgan Amalfitano face his old club. Amalfitano took time to settle on the south coast after his summer move on a Bosman free but has been in prime form of late. He scored in the 3-0 home clasico victory over PSG - his first OM goal - and provided two assists as OM memorably came from 2-0 down at German champions Borussia Dortmund to win 3-2 and make it through to the last 16 of the Champions League. The 26-year-old said: "I feel like I'm getting the good sensations back. Playing in different positions doesn't bother me. In fact it's good for my head. Not many players see it like that. They complain when they don't play in their favourite position. It depends how you see things. If I was a coach then I'd be happy to have a versatile player in my squad." Amalfitano, whose 13 assists table last season placed him second in the table behind Marvin Martin of Sochaux, has noticed some major differences between Lorient's style and the way things are done at OM. He said: "At Lorient everything was very disciplined. Here the players are allowed to do a bit more individually. For three years my game was based around serving Kevin Gameiro. So when I see players doing tricks at OM it's a bit strange. When you give the one and the two doesn't come back... You have to adapt. This is the top level." A 0-0 draw at home to Bordeaux last time out was a disappointing result for Didier Deschamps' side as many of the other top clubs were victorious and OM now stand nine points behind third-placed Lille. A poor start to the season has left the club with a lot to do to secure Champions League qualification, despite having lost only once in their last 11 league games and kept clean sheets in their last four home league fixtures. Lorient have not won away since beating Paris Saint-Germain on the opening day of the season and coach Christian Gourcuff was furious after the Week 17 home loss to Lyon, which was Les Merlus' first home defeat of the season. Gourcuff said: "It was hugely disappointing. We lacked technical ability and we were not lucid enough and that meant we never took control of the game. It has set limits for the rest of the season. I'm very bitter after such a performance. We cannot afford to carry on playing like that, otherwise we'll soon find ourselves in danger. The reality is that we need to collect points. We're not going to panic, but the reality is that we're a side that are going to be playing to stay in the league." Lorient have not been helped by an attacking injury crisis with Gilles Sunu (thigh) the latest forward to be sidelined. Jérémie Aliadière, Julien Quercia and Sigamaray Diarra are all also unavailable to Gourcuff, who has steered Lorient to top half finishes in each of the last three seasons. Marseille are lacking the suspended André Ayew, who like his younger brother Jordan has been named in the provisional 25-man Ghana squad for next month's Africa Cup of Nations, and André-Pierre Gignac (groin) will not be able to face his former club. 3 Stéphane Mbia also likely to be restored to the starting eleven. - HISTORY: Marseille have hosted Lorient seven times in the top division. OM have won three times, Lorient twice, and there have been two draws. - In Week 3 last season OM won 2-0 with Gabriel Heinze (6') and Taye Taiwo (71') getting the goals. Both players have since left the club. That was OM's only win in the last five meetings at the Stade Vélodrome. - Lorient's last win at OM was 3-2 in the season with Morgan Amalfitano, now of OM, one of the scorers as Lorient completed a remarkable comeback from 2-0 down. - In Week 36 of the season Lorient and OM drew 2-2 in Brittany. Amalfitano set up both home goals from Lamine Koné (47') and Kevin Gameiro (80'). Loïc Rémy (14') and André-Pierre Gignac (88'), against his former club, scored for OM. - OM have taken only 1.57 points per home game against Lorient, their worst ratio against any Ligue 1 club. - MARSEILLE: - GENERAL: OM are eighth in Ligue 1 with 25 points from 17 games (6W, 7D, 4L). - In Week 17 OM drew 0-0 at home to Bordeaux. - OM's defeat at Montpellier in Week 14 (1-0) is their sole reverse in their last eleven league matches (6 wins). - Loïc Rémy has a team-high seven goals, the joint-third-highest individual tally in Ligue 1, while André Ayew has six. Five of Rémy's seven goals have been headers. - The Ayew brothers have been directly involved in OM's last four league goals. - Mathieu Valbuena has a league-high seven assists this season. - OM are joint-eighth in the attack table with 22 goals scored. - OM are joint-second in the defence table with 16 goals conceded. - OM have enjoyed 54% of possession in matches this season, as have Lorient. Only PSG and Lille have seen more of the ball than these two clubs. - OM were the first side in L1 to get in more than 100 shots on target. - Loïc Rémy has scored six times against Lorient, his best haul against any top division club. - HOME FORM: OM are seventh in the home form table with 16 points from nine games (4W, 4D, 1L). - No club has conceded fewer goals than OM at home (4). - OM have kept clean sheets in their last four home league fixtures. They haven't kept five clean sheets in a row since March Marseille have picked up 14 of a possible 18 points from their last five home encounters. - Marseille are unbeaten in the home matches in which they have taken the lead this season, winning four from five. However, they have taken just a point from the two home games in which they conceded the opening goal. - Prior to the 0-0 draw with Bordeaux, OM had won their previous three home matches without conceding a goal. 4 - CHAMPIONS LEAGUE: Marseille reached the knockout stages after a remarkable come-from-behind win at Dortmund on Tuesday. Two-nil down to the German champions after 32 minutes, Rémy's header four minutes into added time at the end of the first half reduced the visitors' deficit. André Ayew equalised with five minutes remaining before Valbuena struck a spectacular winner two minutes later. - All three of Valbuena's goals in the Champions League have been matchwinners and have all come away from home. - Valbuena is the first substitute to score for OM in the Champions League since Taiwo in November The game was the first time a French team had come from two goals down to in a Champions League game since Lyon's 5-3 triumph over Steaua Bucharest in October COUPE DE FRANCE: OM have been drawn to play at Red Star FC 93 (National, D3) in the Round of 64 with ties to be played on January 7 and 8. - SUSPENSIONS: André Ayew is suspended. - INJURIES: André-Pierre Gignac (groin) is out. Olympique de Marseille - Olympique de Marseille's title defence ended with them finishing runners-up in , eight points behind champions Lille and four points clear of third-placed Lyon. - Marseille have been crowned Ligue 1 champions nine times (1937, '48, '71, '72, '89, '90, '91, '92, 2010) - second only to Saint-Etienne who have ten L1 titles. - OM are also the most successful club in the history of the French Cup with ten crowns (1924, '26, '27, '35, '38, '43, '69, '72, '76, '89). 6 FC Lorient - Les Merlus finished the campaign in eleventh place, five points above the bottom three. It represented a drop of four places - and nine fewer points - on their performance. - That seventh-placed finish was the club's best ever, beating tenth-placed finishes in each of the previous two seasons. - Founded in 1926, Lorient's crowning moment came in the season when, despite being relegated after just one season back in the top flight, they qualified for both the French Cup and Coupe de la Ligue finals at the Stade de France - winning the French Cup against Bastia thanks to Jean-Claude Darcheville's 41st-minute strike.
