2 PREVIEW : AC AJACCIO - PARIS SAINT-GERMAIN Feature Preview Paris Saint-Germain and AC Ajaccio are separated by virtually the entire length of metropolitan France and an even greater chasm financially, but the pair start on an equal footing when they meet in Corsica on Sunday. "I'm certain that we've done well in the transfer market," said PSG coach Carlo Ancelotti this week after his club has invested more than 100m euros this summer. "When I came here, the aim of the club was to recruit good players, and I see that - today - we have them. That means we have the platform to build something very special in Paris." While that may be true in the long term, the short-term reality is different if the team's performance at home to FC Lorient last weekend is anything to go by. Two-nil down at half-time, PSG required one of their big-name summer additions, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, to live up to his billing and score twice - including a last-minute penalty - to prevent the party at the Parc des Princes falling embarrassingly flat. "I still need some time to be ready," said Ibrahimovic, perhaps worryingly for L1 defences waiting to face the Swede, who made his L1 debut alongside fellow newboys Ezequiel Lavezzi and Marco Verratti. "I had a great debut. I understand that the fans weren't happy with us trailing 2-0 at half-time. They expected better. After that, we played better and managed to equalise. They kept supporting us, and that motivated us to finish strongly." The club from the capital are not likely to have such fervent backing in Corsica, where they have not enjoyed the best of fortunes in meetings with Ajaccio. Only one victory has come from six league encounters with the club from the Corsican capital. That win, however, came last season courtesy of a Kevin Gameiro hat-trick, while the reverse fixture was won handsomely 4-1, albeit with a couple of late goals which gave the scoreline a somewhat flattering gloss. PSG's Week 10 triumph in Ajaccio came with the hosts still trying to find their feet in the top flight upon their return to L1 after a six-season hiatus. Under Olivier Pantaloni, they took their time to stabilise, but lifted themselves from the bottom of the table at the winter break to eventual safety come the season's end. That they did so was largely down to a formidable home record, and they come into their first home encounter of the campaign unbeaten in 11 league matches at the Stade François Coty. Though they cannot match the financial clout of this weekend's visitors, they do boast the same number of points. A two-point penalty with which to start the season appeared to constitute a major handicap, but last weekend's 1-0 win at OGC Nice means the Corsicans - now under the stewardship of former Stade Brestois 29 coach Alex Dupont - are already in the black. "It's a good point for us," joked Dupont after seeing his team hold on to the lead afforded them by Eduardo's 11th-minute goal, despite the dismissal of Mehdi Mostefa early in the second half. "Generally, the best horses start with a handicap, so we must be among the frontrunners! I must congratulate my team on a solid display. The red card prevented us from coming forward after the break, but we defended well without making too many mistakes. We were under pressure but stayed focussed even in the most tricky moments." There are likely to be plenty more of those against PSG, who will draw heart from the fact that the solidity Ajaccio showed at Nice was the exception rather than the rule. Only relegated Dijon FCO conceded more goals in L1 than Ajaccio last season while PSG's attack was the most potent in the top flight. With Ibrahimovic, Lavezzi and Co. adding their substantial talent to an already well-oiled machine, Ajaccio will be hoping that PSG have not learned the lesson of their draw with Lorient. 08/17/2012 Ligue de Football Professionnel / Ligue1.com 2

3 - HISTORY - Of the six L1 meetings between the pair, the hosts have the upper hand with two wins compared to Paris Saint-Germain's single triumph on Corsican soil, which came last season. - In only two of the league encounters between the duo in Ajaccio has a side managed to score more than a single goal. PSG did it last season while Ajaccio won the inaugural meeting 3-0 in May LAST SEASON: Kevin Gameiro scored a hat-trick as PSG won 3-1 in Corsica in Week 10 (2', 50, 53') with Carl Medjani (24') getting the hosts' goal. PSG won the reverse fixture 4-1 in Week 26. Javier Pastore (27') and Jérémy Menez (29') struck before Yoann Poulard (42') pulled one back. Guillaume Hoarau (86') and Nene (90+2') then scored to keep the points in the capital. - AC AJACCIO - GENERAL - Eduardo's 11th-minute strike gave Ajaccio a winning start at OGC Nice, despite Mehdi Mostefa's red card in the opening minute of the second half. - Ajaccio have won their opening two games in a L1 season only twice: in and Ajaccio's starting XI had the oldest average age of any Week 1 line-up (28 years 4 months). - Ajaccio lost their opening pre-season friendly to fellow Corsicans SC Bastia (1-2), but then recorded three wins in a four-match unbeaten run-in to the start of the season. Girondins de Bordeaux and Italian side Cagliari were both beaten 2-1, while Ajaccio also played out a goalless draw with Toulouse FC. - Only seven teams scored fewer than the 40 goals Ajaccio mustered last season, while the 61 they conceded was the second-highest tally in L1, surpassed only by Dijon FCO (63). - Ilan top scored last season with six goals while Frédéric Sammaritano and Eduardo both notched five L1 strikes. - Guillermo Ochoa featured in all but one of the 38 L1 games last season. Medjani played 35 times while Mostefa and Jean-Baptiste Pierazzi featured on 34 occasions. - HOME FORM - By garnering just 26 points (6W 8D 5L) from their 19 home encounters last season, Ajaccio's record was better than only the three relegated teams in L1. - Only five teams scored fewer than the 22 goals Ajaccio mustered on home soil last season. - Ajaccio are unbeaten in their last 11 home games in L1 (5 wins), and are yet to lose a home league game in Their last home defeat came at the hands of LOSC Lille Métropole in Week 16 (2-3). - Since that Lille reverse in December last year, Ajaccio boast the seventh-best home record in L1. - If Ajaccio lose, it will be their 50th home defeat in their L1 history. - LAST SEASON - Ajaccio ended the season - their first in the top flight since in 16th place, three points above the relegation zone. - Ajaccio were bottom of the table come the winter break on 15 points (3W 6D 10L), three points adrift of safety. Brandon Deville left Anderlecht to move to Corsica while Chahir Belghazouani joined from another Belgian club, Zulte Waregem. Goalkeeper Oumar Sissoko was brought in from FC Metz as back-up with David Oberhauser and Thierry Debes moving on. Ilan moved to SC Bastia while Richard Socrier joined Angers SCO. - TRIVIA - Goalkeeper Ochoa played for Mexico in their 1-0 defeat to the USA in Mexico City on Wednesday, and returned to Ajaccio only on Friday. - French media report the club and former Chelsea, Juventus and Fiorentina striker Adrian Mutu have reached an agreement on the ex-romanian international moving to the Corsican capital. The deal is expected to be concluded next week. - PSG - GENERAL - PSG had to come from 2-0 down to claim a 2-2 draw with which to open their season last weekend. A Maxwell own-goal (4') and Jérémie Aliadière's strike (45+3') gave the visitors a healthy half-time cushion, but Zlatan Ibrahimovic pulled one back (64') before slotting home a late penalty (90+1') to equalise on his L1 debut. Rafinha (6') and Lionel Messi (53' pen.) gave Barca a 2-0 lead before Ibrahimovic made it two in two games (59' pen.) and Zoumana Camara equalised with a late header (82'). - The capital club ended the season with the best attack in Ligue 1 with 75 goals, including 21 from Brazilian Nene, and the fewest defeats with just five. - Nene finished with 21 goals last season, the joint-highest individual tally along with Montpellier Hérault SC's Olivier Giroud. - Jérémy Menez provided 12 assists last season -the third-highest individual total in L1 - while Nene chipped in with Goalkeeper Salvatore Sirigu was ever-present last season while Nene featured in 35 games and Gameiro in 34, though seven of those appearances were as a substitute. - PSG have scored at least once in their last 16 L1 matches. - AWAY FORM - PSG had the best away record in L1 last season, racking up 34 points from 19 games (9W 7D 3L). - Their tally of 33 goals scored away from home was the best in the division. Thiago Silva is unlikely to feature after only training with his new teammates for the first time in a behind-closed-doors session on Friday. - SUSPENSIONS - Javier Pastore returns after serving a one-match ban. - TRANSFERS - Paris-SG have been the big movers in Europe this summer spending 99 million Euros on Sweden's Zlatan Ibrahimovic (20m Euros) and Brazilian defender Thiago Silva (42m Euros) from AC Milan, Argentine forward Ezequiel Lavezzi (26m Euros) from Napoli and Italy U21 international Marco Verratti (11m Euros) from Pescara. - The club released out-of-contract Brazilian full-back Marco Ceara who has joined Cruzeiro in his homeland. The highly-rated attacking midfielder will rejoin the French capital in January TRIVIA - Christophe Jallet made his international debut, coming on for LOSC Lille Métropole's Mathieu Debuchy 28 minutes into France's goalless draw with Uruguay on Wednesday. Blaise Matuidi was an unused substitute, but Mamadou Sakho played the whole 90 minutes in central defence while Diego Lugano did likewise as Uruguay captain. - Siaka Tiené played the whole game as Ivory Coast drew 1-1 in Russia; Ibrahimovic missed Sweden's 3-0 friendly defeat to Brazil in Stockholm, where Thiago Silva and Lucas featured for the victors. Sirigu started in goal for Italy and Verratti came off the bench to make his international debut in Italy's 2-1 defeat to England. Milan Bisevac played the first half of Serbia's goalless draw against the Republic of Ireland in Belgrade. - Thiago Silva arrived at PSG's Camp des Loges for the first time on Thursday and spoke to coach Ancelotti and teammate and friend Maxwell.
