2 PREVIEW : OLYMPIQUE LYONNAIS - AS SAINT-ETIENNE Feature Preview The 106th derby between two of France's fiercest historical rivals, Olympique Lyonnais and Saint-Etienne, has rarely had so much riding on it with third place and a Champions League berth beckoning for the victors. Third-placed Lyon currently hold all the aces with a two-point lead in the standings and home ground advantage with just four rounds to play after this weekend, but their coach Rémi Garde knows there is a special feeling this time around: "The positioning of the two clubs on the ladder [in third and fourth], this late in the season will certainly added a little spice to proceedings," said Garde, a product of the OL academy who played for the first team between 1987 and "That's great for the entertainment, for the tension and for the league. Perhaps it is a little bit different to other derbies, but every derby against Saint-Etienne is important and they are all intense." Since taking over from Claude Puel at the start of last season, Garde has won all four previous derby matches against Les Verts, but believes this may well be the toughest of the lot: "We will try and do our best against a side that are unbeaten in Ligue 1 since the start of the year. I don't think there's extra pressure on us. We have been dealing with the situation since the start of the season. Les Verts are playing very well at the moment, defensively, they are very solid. It will be very tough but both teams will be looking for the win." Saint-Etienne are finishing the season strongly. Last weekend they picked up their first silverware in 32 years. On an emotionally charged night at the Stade de France in front of 79,000 fans, they won the Coupe de la Ligue with a 1-0 win over Stade Rennais. The win was followed by a parade through the streets of Saint-Etienne on Sunday. They backed that up with a 4-2 win over Ajaccio on Wednesday. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored twice (23', 88') and Mathieu Bodmer (48') and Renaud Cohade (50') also got on the scoresheet as Les Verts took their season tally to 55 goals (second only to PSG, 60, and one more than Lyon). Aubameyang scored his 18th and 19th goals of the season against Ajaccio. He is the first Saint-Etienne player to reach that tally since Michel Platini in Just 24 hours after defeating Ajaccio, Les Verts captain Loïc Perrin signed a new two-year extension to his contract. 3 - HISTORY: This Sunday's match will be the 106th derby match between neighbours Olympique Lyonnais and Saint-Etienne. - It is the 47th at the Stade Gerland in Ligue 1. OL have won 19, drawn 16 and Saint-Etienne have won Saint-Etienne have managed just one win in the last 20 years away to their rivals: that came 1-0 in the 100th derby match on 25 September 2010, courtesy of Dimitri Payet's 75th minute free-kick. Their last win before that was 2-0 in February In Week 12 of last season, former Saint-Etienne defender Mouhamadou Dabo was sent off early in the second half (52'), but OL still managed all three points thanks to late goals from Jimmy Briand (82') and Yoann Gourcuff (90+1'). - THIS SEASON: A Michel Bastos strike in the 65th minute settled the derby earlier this season at the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard. Lyon's Mouhamadou Dabo was sent off for the second match in a row against his former employers (56') and Saint-Etienne's Alejandro Alonso was also shown a red card late on (86'). - OLYMPIQUE LYONNAIS - GENERAL: Olympique Lyonnais currently sit third on the Ligue 1 ladder with 59 points, 11 points behind leader Paris and two behind second-placed Marseille. - Last weekend Lyon made it back to back wins with a last gasp 2-1 win over Montpellier. - Clément Grenier netted a stunning left-foot half-volley winner from the edge of the area with the last kick of the game after Lisandro Lopez had opened the scoring for OL (29') and Younes Belhanda had equalised for Montpellier. - Grenier has recorded a goal and an assist in OL's last two matches. - Lyon were top of the table at the end of Week 20 after a home draw with Nancy before PSG beat them 1-0 a week later - a result that sent the capital club top. - Bafetimbi Gomis is the club's top scorer with 14 goals. - HOME FORM: OL are the fifth-best home team in Ligue 1 having taken 33 points from ten wins, three draws and three losses. They have scored 31 and conceded They defeated Toulouse 3-1 in their most recent home match - a win that ended a run of two home games without victory. - Bafetimbi Gomis has scored 9 of his 14 goals at home this term. - Lyon have won all seven home matches this season in which they have opened the scoring. - OL have also won three matches after conceding the opening goal at home, drawing once and losing three times. - TROPHÉE DES CHAMPIONS: OL won the traditional curtain-raiser to the season, beating Montpellier 4-2 on penalties after a 2-2 draw at the Red Bull Arena, home of the New York Red Bulls, in Harrison, New Jersey. - COUPE DE LA LIGUE: As one of France's European representatives, last season's runners-up Lyon earned a bye directly through to the last 16, where they were beaten 3-1 at OGC Nice. - COUPE DE FRANCE: Winners last season, OL's defence of the trophy ended at the first hurdle, as they suffered a shock defeat to Épinal of the third division Championnat National. Lyon lost 4-2 on penalties after the tie ended 3-3 after extra time. - EUROPA LEAGUE: Lyon were eliminated in the Round of 32, losing 3-2 on aggregate to Tottenham Hotspur of England. - After losing the first leg 2-1 in London, OL drew 1-1 in the return at the Stade de Gerland. Aubameyang took his tally to 19 for the season. He has now scored 37 goals in two and a half Ligue 1 seasons with ASSE, compared to 12 goals in the previous two and a half seasons with Dijon, Lille and Monaco. Olympique Lyonnais - Last season Lyon finished fourth in Ligue 1 with 64 points - ten points behind third-placed Lille - and will not feature in the Champions League after 13 straight seasons of having qualified for Europe's premier continental club competition. - In OL did at least put an end to their trophy drought as they won the Coupe de France beating amateur club Quevilly (National, D3) 1-0 at the Stade de France. Lisandro Lopez scored the only goal of the game. 5 - Lyon parted company with coach Claude Puel in the summer of Puel failed to win any silverware in his three years in charge, although he did lead the club to the semi-finals of the Champions League for the first time in their history in , beating Real Madrid and Bordeaux before losing to Bayern Munich in the last four. - Prior to Puel's arrival in 2008 Lyon had won the Ligue 1 title seven seasons in a row. - Puel's successor Rémi Garde is in his first spell in charge of a professional club. - Born locally, Garde spent nine years as a player at Lyon between 1984 and 1993, forming part of the team that won promotion to Ligue 1 in He went on to play for Strasbourg and Arsenal, before returning to Lyon to work as assistant under Paul Le Guen and Gérard Houllier.
